IRC Exclusive: Legendary Producers Martin Bisi & Bill Laswell Team Up with Fiery Furnances and Dresden Dolls

Martin Bisi is a famed producer who built a recording studio with Brian Eno three decades ago, producing albums for some of the best bands of the 1980’s and early 90s underground rock movement, including Sonic Youth, The Swans, Dresden Dolls and The Boredoms, to name just a few. Bisi, who is also a musician, songwriter and engineer, recently jumped into the sound tank himself to record tracks with folks like Fiery Furnances’ dummer Bob D’Amico, prolific producer and bassist Bill Laswell (The Ramones, Iggy Pop, Mick Jagger and many others), and members of The Dresden Dolls and Balkan Beat Box. Laswell was also instrumental in creating the studio with Bisi and Eno.

In fact, Bisi and Laswell collaborated with Herbie Hancock to record the 1983 Grammy Award-winning song, “RockIt” – the first hit song to feature turntable scratching. Jumping forward to this year, all of this talent in one room is a combination sure to result in something interesting, which is exactly what these next songs, “Mile High – Apple of My Eye” and “Drink Your Wine,” prove to be. The songs are from the recently released five-track digital only EP Son of a Gun, and were sent to IRC by Bisi himself. The first song featured below is a perfect track for Halloween, or even The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack, while “Drink Your Wine” is more of an uptempo rocker that is fun and infectious at the same time (watch the video above).

Of the recording of the EP, Bisi said: “With Laswell, I did the ‘modern’ approach of sending him files, letting him do whatever, and then adjusting. He really surprised me. I was expecting his usual very groove or dub oriented bass, and he gave me something very ambient, laden with effects and trippy. That pretty much sums up the M.O. on this EP…With “Mile High- Apple Of My Eye,” I asked Butterface (the keyboardist on the EP) to give me some programmed rhythms and sounds with a trip-hop vibe, specifically for Laswell to play on, and he turned it around in 30 minutes.”

Three songs that could possibly be danced as tangos. They are rhythmical, but not too fast and contain lyrical sections. Of course, I have not tested this theory yet, and would have trouble convincing anyone to try it out, but it seems plausible. Someday…

On half of the punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls, Amanda Palmer is Playing music Hall of tonight Williamsburgh 11/14.

Her solo album Who killed Amanda Palmer? was released in Sept. 2008 on Roadrunner records. Palmer is unhappy with her record label because according to Wikipedia after the release of her music video for the song “Leeds United,” the record label wanted to pull certain shots from the video that exposed her stomach, because “they thought I looked fat.” She straight out asked to be dropped from her record label by posting a song on her blog asking them to do so.

Om noen få timer tar helga over for hverdagen, heldigvis. Mine planer innebærer vernissage på Kunstakadamiet, vindrikking, soving, og en tur til Fredrikstad for å hjelpe min mor med å male den nye gangen hennes, drikke kaffe med venner og se fotballsesongens siste hjemmekamp. Hvis du ennå ikke helt vet hva du skal bruke helga til så har jeg tre feiende fine saker du kan fylle tiden med.

Du kan se filmen The Bloom Brothers, om to svindlerbrødre som skal utføre sitt siste stunt. Det planagte offeret er den unge, vakre og eksentriske millionæren Penelope. Men som alltid når noen skal gjøre det siste geniale kuppet, så går ikke alt helt som plnalagt. Eller gjør det det?

The Bloom Brothers er morsom, søt og herlig film, og fullstendig umulig å motstå. Jeg elsker særlig estetikken i filmen, som blander moderne tid med klassisk 30-tallslook. Min favorittkarakter er selvsagt Bang Bang, japansk eksplosivekspert og gunslinger, som kun har to replikker i filmen; “Campari” og “Fuck me”, og en vanvittig høy kulhetsfaktor.

Hvis du vil ha noe mer litterært kan du ta en titt på Kristian Bergquists nye diktsamling, Dette er det vi gjør med hverandre. Diktene veklser mellom det sarte og vakre, det grove og brutale. Flere av diktene opplevde jeg som ekle og skumle, men jeg måtte bare fortsette å lese. Jeg måtte tenke over hvorfor jeg reagerer som jeg gjør. Her er et av de mindre skumle diktene:

Mens du leser diktene kan du jo høre på den siste plata til Dresden Dolls, No, Virginia. Dresden Dolls har holdt på siden 2000 og kaller seg “brechtiansk punk cabaret”. Jeg oppdaget dem nylig og ble forført av både lydbildet og imaget deres.

Florence + The Machine release debut album Lungs

One would think that “angry girl” music would have died with the ’90s, but music fans everywhere can hardly be that lucky. As long as there are screwed up relationships and overly emotional “artistes” we can look forward to raging outpours clogging up our iTunes.  While Florence + The Machine fit that profile, unlike most love-hating, morbid musical arrangements, their debut release Lungs is a vicious composition, as angry as it is intellectual and nonchalant.

Florence + the Machine is focused around Florence Welch, with an always-transforming supporting cast. While they are just emerging on this side of the pond, the band has been tearing through the British music scene since early July, gaining quite a lot of notoriety in a miniscule time span.  Among the early accolades, the band won both the Brits Critics’ Choice section and Studio8’s Female Voice of July 2009, and were nominated for BBC Sound of 2009 and the Mercury Prize. Need we say more?

Melodious harp shimmers, cacophonous drum-sets and on-the-spot piano keys, phenomenal on their own, are a mere palette for Welch’s intense vocals that can only be described as a love child of PJ Harvey and Lily Allen.  Welch finds an unattainable balance between sweet, downright adorable melodies and deranged, borderline daunting lyrics with each track.

You’d think with lines like “I’m going out, I’m going to drink myself to death… I brace myself because I know it’s going to hurt,” Florence + The Machine would be aiming for the title of quintessential high-school emo-band, but that is hardly the case. As overly dramatic and depressing as the lyrics may come off with the first listen, there is also a delicate simplicity, which comes out impeccably through Welch’s vocals.

The melodies range from monotone jingles, to over-the-top orchestral arrangements. It walks along the lines of Dresden Dolls, with soaring high pitches and cacophonous transitions. The album skillfully avoids getting boring and hard to digest, with appropriate melodic reliefs throughout.

Overall the album is an extremely successful first attempt. Lungs has definitely gotten our positive attention. It’s an acquired taste, getting better by the listen, so be sure to give it the time it deserves.

Bueno como ya vimos en el post anterior la literatura Steampunk es muy amplia, hoy lo que toca, son los grupos de musica Steampunk. Parece mentira, pero hay grupos que la musica que tocan la denominan de ese genero o los fans los engloban en ese genero.

Vamos a dar un pequeño repaso por algunos de los más (y menos) conocidos de estos grupos. Empecemos pues…

Abney Park

Este no es un grupo novel, sino todo lo contrario pues ya tienen unos cuantos discos a sus espaldas, se llaman Abney Park (echadle un ojo a lo currada que está la web) y que son el grupo Steampunk más famoso del mundo. Tienen un vestuario y estetica muy currada y las canciones estan bien.

Beat Circus

Aunque se les puede englobar en la corriente musical de Dark Cabaret, es una banda con ya unos cuantos años de antiguedad y que cuenta con muchos seguidores. Su musica es cuanto menos peculiar y es como poco bastante tetrica.

Dr. Steel

Su nombre completo es Phineas Waldolf Steel, y el es un musico americano residente en el sur de California, es bastante conocido en los ambientes goticos, Steampunk y Rivethead. Ademas de ser un cantante (ver mas adelante) tambien es un showman que hace sus gags. Para muestra un boton:

Dresden Dolls

Los Dresden Dolls son un duo musical americano llegados desde Boston (Massachusetts). El grupo fue formado en el 2000, y esta compuesto por Amanda Palmer (voz, piano, armonica y ukelele (si, leiste bien)) y Brian Viglione (bateria, percusion, guitarra, bajo y voz). Ellos se describen como “Brechtian punk cabaret”, Forman parte de la corriente Dark Cabaret, pero tiene reminicencias steampunk, y la web tiene algo que me da escalofrios…

The Muse

¿Que es que alguien no conoce este grupo?. Muse es una banda inglesa de rock alternativo, originaria de Teignmouth, Devon. Está compuesta por Matthew Bellamy (compositor, voz, guitarra, teclado y piano); Dominic Howard (batería y percusión). y Christopher Wolstenholme (bajo eléctrico, teclados y coros). Tras el lanzamiento de su cuarto álbum, Morgan Nicholls colabora con la banda durante los conciertos, haciéndose cargo de teclados, samples y de algunos coros.[1] Su música cuenta con influencia de compositores clásicos, especialmente, aquellos de la era romántica, tales como Sergéi Rajmáninov. La banda es famosa por sus enérgicas actuaciones en vivo y los excéntricos intereses del líder Bellamy en la conspiración global, vida extraterrestre, teología y el apocalipsis.

Ben Houge

Más que un musico como Bisbal Abney Park, Ben es el encargado de de poner sonidos en muchos de los juegos a los que estamos acostumbrados a viciar, de hecho trabaja en Ubilol Ubisoft. Desde luego a trabajado en juegos tan miticos como: Tom Clancy’s EndWar, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, la saga Half-Life, SWAT 3: Close Quarters Battle, King’s Quest: Mask of Eternity, entre otros. Y ya solo por trabajar para la mitica empresa de videojuegos Sierra (que el Diox de los jugones tenga en su gloria) ya se merece estar aqui. Toca generos tan dispares como Electro-Acoustica, Coral, Vocal, liturgica, orquestal, etc. Vamos un autentico crack, la pega que para trabajar en juegos tan chulos tiene una web digna del siglo XIX…

Unextraordinary Gentlemen

Este trio crea una musica bizarra y muy barroca, mezclando instrumentos clasicos con cajas de ritmos y demas parafernalia futurista. La estetica es Steampunk abogan -habitualmente- por un punk-folk extraño con ciertas excepciones y a partir de ahí juegan mucho con el factor estético.

Nine Inch Nails

Nine Inch Nails (abreviado NIN) es una banda estadounidense de rock industrial fundada en 1988 por Trent Reznor en Cleveland, Ohio, Estados Unidos. Como su principal productor, cantante, compositor e instrumentista, Reznor es el único miembro oficial de Nine Inch Nails y el único responsable de la dirección de la banda. La música de Nine Inch Nails abarca un gran número de géneros musicales, aunque mantiene un sonido característico utilizando instrumentos electrónicos y procesamiento en el estudio de grabación. Después de grabar cada nuevo álbum de estudio, Reznor forma una banda de músicos para las giras y conciertos. Esta banda suele ser cambiante y hace arreglos en las canciones para ajustarlas a las actuaciones en directo. En el escenario, NIN suele utilizar elementos visuales espectaculares para sus actuaciones, entre las que destaca el espectáculo lumínico. Nightwish

Nightwish es un grupo de metal sinfónico procedente de Finlandia, conocidos en todo el mundo por sus fuertes y melódicos riffs de guitarra, atmósferas de órgano y sintetizador, potente batería y claro sonido de bajo que hace un buen contraste con su apoyo filarmónico/orquestal. Nightwish es considerada una de las bandas más representativas de este género.

Su género musical es bastante discutido. Cabe señalar que son muy reconocidos por haber brindado una gran diversidad de cualidades de power metal llevándolo a un nivel muy potente, y a la vez combinando al género con metal sinfónico, algunos toques de folk y thrash metal siendo éstos los que ponen a debatir la etimología de su música.

Dead Can Dance

Dead Can Dance es un grupo musical procedente de Australia, compuesto por Lisa Gerrard y Brendan Perry. Dead Can Dance se formó en Melbourne en el año 1981 estableciéndose inicialmente en Australia. Al no tener grandes perspectivas de éxito en ese país se trasladaron a Londres donde tras un año firmaron para el legendario sello de rock alternativo 4AD, convirtiéndose en una de sus bandas más importantes. Continuaron trabajando juntos hasta adentrados los ‘90, cuando comenzaron a trabajar por separado. Lisa Gerrard retornó a Australia, mientras Brendan Perry se fue a Irlanda, lugar en que compró una vieja iglesia, Quivy Church, en la cual vive y trabaja.

Regina Spektor

La artista nació el 18 de febrero de 1980 en Moscú en el seno de una familia judía. Su padre, Ilya Spektor, fotógrafo, fue también violinista aficionado, mientras su madre es profesora de música, y enseñó en un colegio de música en Rusia, y actualmente lo hace en una escuela pública básica en Mount Vernon, localidad ubicada en la misma ciudad en la que ellos residen.

La familia abandonó Rusia en 1989, durante la Perestroika, cuando a los ciudadanos rusos se les permitió emigrar del país. En su páis natal, Spektor tocaba el piano desde que tenía seis años, y escuchaba bandas de rock, como The Beatles y Queen. Cuentan que de pequeña Regina soñaba con ser concertista clásica de piano y que los primeros años de su nueva vida en Norteamérica, habiendo tenido que dejar su instrumento en su lejano país de nacimiento, los pasaba la niña practicando escalas en cualquier superficie plana, ya fuera el tablero de una mesa o el alféizar de una ventana. Evanescence

Evanescence es una banda estadounidense de metal gótico fundada en Little Rock, Arkansas en 1998 por la vocalista Amy Lee y el guitarrista Ben Moody.

Después de grabar dos EP independientes, Evanescence EP, Sound Asleep, y Origin en el año 2000 con ayuda de la discográfica Bigwig Enterprises, la banda lanzó su primer álbum de estudio, Fallen, con la discográfica Wind-up Records en el año 2003. Fallen vendió más de 15 millones de copias alrededor del mundo y la banda ganó dos premios Grammy. Un año más tarde, la banda lanzó su primer DVD en vivo, Anywhere but Home, el cual vendió más de 1 millón de copias alrededor del mundo. En el 2006, la banda lanzó su segundo álbum de estudio, The Open Door que hasta la fecha ha vendido más de 5 millones de copias en todo el mundo. Portishead

Portishead es el nombre de un grupo musical británico, de tendencia trip hop, formado en Bristol en 1991.Su segundo álbum Portishead, salió a la venta en 1997 e incluyó el sencillo “All Mine”. Además, grabaron un concierto con acompañamiento de orquesta en Roseland, Nueva York, donde fueron interpretadas sus canciones más famosas. Éste, salió a la venta en 1998 con un DVD del concierto. En 1999 colaboraron con Tom Jones en una canción de su álbum Reload. Y no me direis que el video es Steampunk si hasta sale un tio con una camara de carrete, tecnologia obsoleta xD.

VNV Nation

VNV Nation es una agrupación de música electrónica originaria de Londres, ahora establecida en Hamburgo, que combina elementos de Electronic Body Music (EBM), Música Industrial y Synthpop, para formar lo que ellos llaman Futurepop. Los miembros son Ronan Harris y Mark Jackson. VNV Nation es la abreviación de Victory Not Vengeance (literalmente, Victoria No Venganza), un lema que hace alusión a la idea de que uno debe buscar el triunfo y no refugiarse en los lamentos. Temática que es tratada a lo largo de la discografía del grupo y que caracteriza su sonido.

The Clockwork Quartet es una banda de musica que mezcla elementos de, musica experimental,folk y neo-victoriana. Es una de las bandas que traigo que más me gustan. Oingo Boingo

Este grupo tiene videos con claras reminiscencias a este estilo, y como nota curiosa “Danny” Elfman (antiguo lider del grupo), es conocido principalmente por escribir música para las películas de Tim Burton, con quien debutó en 1985 como compositor de bandas sonoras con su película La gran aventura de Pee-Wee y con quien mantiene una extensa colaboración hasta el día de hoy o crear el famoso tema de la serie televisiva Los Simpson que, entre muchos otros trabajos, le han otorgado un gran prestigio a lo largo su ecléctica carrera musical.

Switchblade Symphony

Switchblade Symphony es un grupo estadounidense (san Francisco) formado en 1989, compuesto por Susan Wallace y Tina Root. El nombre de este grupo se debe a que es un grupo que mezcla muchos géneros, entre ellos; Gothic Rock, música orquestrada, Trip-Hop y Synthpop, creando un Darkwave bastante especial.

Este grupo es la leyenda noventera del Darkwave, creando el look de muñeca de trapo gótica (No confundir con las Gothic Lolitas, ellas emulan a muñecas de porcelana, no de trapo), al parecer inventaron o al menos popularizaron los Dread Falls (Muy utilizados por los Cybers), claro que ellas lo usaban para obtener el look de pelo de lana.

Vermillion Lies

Aunque son un grupo de cabaret, Vermillion Lies es justamente uno de estos grupos conceptuales. Cuentan la historia de dos hermanas que se separan; en el 2004, después de años incomunicadas se reencuentran y al no tener nada más puro que decirse, se comunican por medio de música, la intercambian y mezclan, al darse cuenta que la batahola es lo bastante agradable, se fusionan en una misma sustancia y Vermillion Lies cobra vida: una arpía únicamente separada por el día de nacimiento.

Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society

The Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society son Erica Roberts, Robert Hazelton, Robert Gardunia y Anastasia Oleinikov. La banda empezo a tocar en Agosto del 2007. El primer disco que sacaron fue, Clockwork Dreams.

Bueno creo que ya estan los grupos que yo personalmente diria que son o tienen algun toque steampunk, aunque hay que aclarar queno existe ninguna banda Steampunk perse, son diferentes evoluciones del Pop y el Heavy Metal y en algun caso Folk, con una gran dosis de pura estética nada mas; para escuchar música Steampunk habria que realizar un pequeño viaje en el tiempo y remontarse al siglo XIX.

Amanda Palmer, die frühere Sängerin der Dresden Dolls, versucht seit einigen Monaten, sich ohne Unterstützung eines Labels durchzuschlagen. Denn wie sie letztentens in ihrem Blog vorrechnete, habe sie mit einmonatiger Nutzung von Twitter, wo sie T-Shirts verkaufte und Auftritte für Follower spielte, 19.000 Dollar verdient, nach dem Verkauf von 30.000 Stück ihres Soloalbums aber keinen Cent.

Auf ihrem Blog erklärt sie, warum sie ihre Fans direkt um Geld bittet und weshalb sie bald nicht mehr die einzige Künstlerin sein wird, die so verfährt. Ja, der Text ist laaang und auf englisch, aber das Thema interessant und Palmers Stil unterhaltsam, keine Sorge:

i had two conversations within the last 24 hours which made me feel like blogging about this.

one was with Jason Webley , who i’ve been living with for the past week in the Middle of Nowhere.

i was writing a press release and in it disclosed how much money i made from the recent london webcast (about 10k).
i gave a copy of the text to jason to proofread over a cup of tea (that’s what rock stars do for each other nowadays instead of leaving lines of blow on the backs of bathroom toilets).
he suggested taking the money part out. he gently advised; he’s heard people gossiping about me and my shameless revelations about my webcast/twitter income etc.

right around the same time i got an email from Beth, regarding the future of my webcasting.
she suggested we do something totally free and not ask people for any money.
she’s been picking up on heat from people that the ask-the-fans-for-money thing has gotten out of control.

listen.

artists need to make money to eat and to continue to make art.

artists used to rely on middlemen to collect their money on their behalf, thereby rendering themselves innocent of cash-handling in the public eye.

artists will now be coming straight to you (yes YOU, you who want their music, their films, their books) for their paychecks.
please welcome them. please help them. please do not make them feel badly about asking you directly for money.
dead serious: this is the way shit is going to work from now on and it will work best if we all embrace it and don’t fight it.

unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve surely noticed that artists ALL over the place are reaching out directly to their fans for money.
how you do it is a different matter.
maybe i should be more tasteful.
maybe i should not stop my concerts and auction off art.
i do not claim to have figured out the perfect system, not by a long shot.

BUT … i’d rather get the system right gradually and learn from the mistakes and break new ground (with the help of an incredibly responsive and positive fanbase) for other artists who i assume are going to cautiously follow in our footsteps. we are creating the protocol, people, right here and now.

i don’t care if we fuck up. i care THAT we’re doing it.

in fact, i ENJOY being the slightly crass, outspoken, crazy-(naked?)-chick-on-a-soapbox holding out a ukulele case of crumpled dollars asking for your money so that someone else a few steps behind me, perhaps some artist of shy and understated temperament, can feel better and maybe a little less nervous when they quietly step up and hold out their hat, fully clothed.

i am shameless, and fearless, when it comes to money and art.

i can’t help it: i come from a street performance background.
i stood almost motionless on a box in harvard square, painted white, relinquishing my fate and income to the goodwill and honor of the passers-by.

i spent years gradually building up a tolerance to the inbuilt shame that society puts on laying your hat/tipjar on the ground and asking the public to support your art.

i was harassed, jeered at, mocked, ignored, insulted, spit at, hated.
i was also applauded, appreciated, protected, loved….all by strangers passing me in the street.
people threw shit at me.
people also came up to me and told me that i’d changed their lives, brightened their day, made them cry.

some people used to yell “GET A FUCKING JOB” from their cars when they drove by me.
i, of course, could not yell back. i was a fucking statue, statues do not yell.

i did this for 5 years, and i made a living that way.
dollar by dollar.
hour by hour.
it was hard fucking work.

and for the last 10 years, i have been working my ass off in a different way: tirelessly making music, traveling the world, connecting with people, trying to keep my balance, almost never taking a break and, frankly, not making a fortune doing it. i still struggle to pay my rent sometimes. i’m still more or less in debt from my last record. i’ll lay it all out for you in another blog. it’s just math.

if you think i’m going to pass up a chance to put my hat back down in front of the collected audience on my virtual sidewalk and ask them to give their hard-earned money directly to me instead of to roadrunner records, warner music group, ticketmaster, and everyone else out there who’s been shamelessly raping both fan and artist for years, you’re crazy.

it’s also not a matter of whether an artist is starving or cruising on a yacht.
i would hate to see my fans turn on me once i actually have money in the bank with a “well, i would support you if you were starving, but now that you’re eating, no way.”
fuck that.
accept a new system.
feel ok about giving your money directly to paul mccartney. he may be rich, but he still rocks. show you care.
feel ok about giving it to fucking lady gaga if you’ve been guiltily downloading her dance tracks for free.
rejoice in the fact that you are directly responsible for several threads in her new spandex spacesuit.
it shouldn’t matter.
it’s about empowerment and it’s about SIMPLICITY: fan loves art, artist needs money, fan gives artist money, artist says thank you.

the critics are welcome to criticize.
they do not have to attend the party.
and even if they attend the party with rolling eyes, they will not be charged.
they will be hugged, they will be accepted and entertained, and they will not be given the hairy eyeball if they leave the room without tipping.
chances are they’ll tell a friend about the next party, and their friend will probably leave a dollar. and tell someone else.

taking my stand as a virtual street performer is the best thing that’s happened to my career and i revel in it.
and i love bringing people along for the ride.

i believe in the future of cheap art, creative enterprise, and an honorable public who will put their money where there mouth is, or rather, their spare change where their heart is.

Emily and I have know one another since the early 90’s.  She swam  for Lake Country, I swam for NBSC.  When were were 12, she claimed Oasis was the best band in the world during an icebreaker at swim camp while she made the other kids who didn’t know any better say they loved some made-up band she recommended.   Years later, she cornered me at a swim meet to tell me she loved my CSNY t-shirt and that she had told her coach (Roy!) at Northeastern about me.  I went on a recruiting trip and the rest is history.

Descriptive Vocabulary: enterprising, industrious, spiritual, capable, sanguine, harmonious.

What you should know about her: Emily may be the most ambitious person I know.  She tour-managed the Dresden Dolls while the rest of us were still debating which cafeteria to tour in college.  She now runs her own bi-coastal talent management company called WhiteSmith Entertainment out of Brooklyn, NY and Los Angeles, CA.

She calls people donkeys in instead of douchebags.

She once made me attend a going-away party for a ferret named Butter Monster.

She’s a vegan-ish eater who I know for a fact used to LOVE bacon.

She was and probably still is a very talented swimmer.

She skipped first grade.

She’s the reason I’ve hugged Ray Allen, Jack Johnson, Tom Morello, half of The Roots, and many more.

Irgendwo muss da ein Nest sein – schon der zweite irische Beitrag innerhalb kurzer Zeit auf dem Lauschsofa. Dieses Mal gibt sich die Ehre: Duke Special. Eigentlich hätte ich schon längst mal ein paar Worte zu diesem Künstler verlieren sollen, denn ihn habe ich schon vor Jahren entdeckt. Leider ging er zumindest hierzulande trotz Veröffentlichung auf damals V2 fast komplett unter. Hat insgesamt aber doch zu Mehrfach-Platin gereicht für die Songs From The Deep Forest. Qualität setzt sich eben durch. Hoffentlich jetzt auch mal richtig in Deutschland, wenn ich mir auch nicht sicher bin, ob er derzeit überhaupt offiziell hier verteten wird (bei Universal Deutschland findet man ihn zumindest nicht auf der Website im Artist Roster).

Hach ja, wenn sich doch alle ihre eigenen Worte so zu Herzen nehmen würden wie er. Denn Duke Special veröffentlicht nun nämlich unter dem Titel Everybody Wants A Little Something einen kostenlosen Longplay-Sampler und erlaubt somit dem interessierten, aber noch unwissenden Hörer einen gefahrlosen Einblick in sein Universum. Wobei, »gefahrlos« – auf das vorhandene Suchtpotenzial dieser Musik sollte schon hingewiesen sein.

Richtig gelesen – nicht bloß ein, zwei rumliegende fünftklassige Dinger von der Resterampe oder gar was schnell und lieblos Zusammengeschustertes wie weiland ein kostenloser Teaser für das letzte Album einer meiner Meinung nach technisch sicherlich nicht schlechten, aber vom künstlerischen Gehalt her eher…nun ja…Sängerin namens Joana Z. – da hatte ich mich echt geärgert, für diesen Download meine Email-Adresse herausgegeben zu haben. »Mit Speck fängt man Mäuse« heißt es ja auch. Nicht mit Käse. Kostenlos ist manchmal also wirklich umsonst.

Hier jedoch ganz und gar nicht! Nein, im Falle von Duke Special gibt es einen fast 40-minütigen Longplayer, der reguläre Songs von seinen Alben, B-Seiten, Kleinode aus dem Fundus sowie zwei Live-Versionen und ein neues Demo enthält. Und dieses »little something« wird hoffentlich wirklich »everybody« wollen.

Duke Special - Everybody Wants A Little Something

Everybody Wants A Little Something bietet einen kurzweiligen und abwechslungsreichen Einblick in das Schaffen Duke Specials. Neben dem titelgebenden Track finden sich weitere 10 Songs auf dem Album, die eine Art Vaudeville Show vor dem geistigen Auge erscheinen lassen. Neben einer neuen Demo-Version des »Song Of Fraternization (Yvette’s Song)« für die Mutter Courage-Aufführung im Londoner National Theatre, wo Duke Special für die Musik verantwortlich zeichnet und auch live für die Musik sorgt, findet sich hier z.B. der seinerzeit als B-Seite erschienene Folk-Traditional »Drink To Me Only«, ein sehr schönes Duett mit immer-mal-wieder-Gesangspartner Neil Hannon (The Divine Comedy). Der Bogen spannt sich von bluesigem Swing (»John Lennon Love«) und waschechtem Charleston (»Wanda, Darling Of The Jockey Club«) über Cabaret (»Catfish Song«) hin zu wavigem Akustik-Alternative (»Nothing Comes Easy«) und Balladen, die einfach nur zum Sterben schön sind (»Regarding The Moonlight In Eastbourne« und »Closer To The Start«).

Und wie schon gesagt sind auch zwei Live-Versionen enthalten: das im Original schon sehr epische »Wake Up Scarlet«, nun mit ganz großer Orchesterbreitseite, sowie das schelmische »Diggin’ An Early Grave«, das hier nun vollends als klezmerisierter Düster-Ska daher kommt. Klasse!

Wenn man also Duke Special noch nicht kennt, ist das die perfekte Gelegenheit diesen Ausnahmekünstler mal kennen zu lernen. Sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen.

Für Steampunk-Affine, Amanda Palmer-Fans und Dresden Dolls-Addicts ein Muss! Für alle anderen eigentlich auch, finde ich. Hingehen. Runterziehen. Weitersagen.

Well, dang, Amanda Palmer, I did not expect this entry to turn out like this when I began writing. I always thought you rated as talented and fun, but not always for me, but once I had to start pondering you, I began to wonder if it might be that you hit a little too close to home? So thanks?

Amanda Palmer – Runs in the Family

Here is a link to the official video for this really excellent track from her LP Who Killed Amanda Palmer, available through Roadrunner Records and produced by Ben Folds (also the album art is by Neil Gaiman … because they are dating, which I cannot comprehend). I’m not crazy about the video, so I’m not embedding it here. I think her showy, fitful histrionics kind of rob the song of its natural jumpiness and make it almost less nerve-wracking.

Amanda began her career with the Dresden Dolls, about whom the wiki has this nugget to say which for me says it all:

The two describe their style as “Brechtian punk cabaret”, a phrase invented by Palmer because she was “terrified” that the press would invent a name that “would involve the word gothic.” The Dresden Dolls are part of an underground dark cabaret movement that started gaining momentum in the early 1990s.

Brecht, punk, cabaret — I find these to be overused words, I stigmatize them because they drip with deliberate intellect, I kind of sneer at them, okay? However, that’s hypocritical as hell because I used terms like “dark cabaret” yesterday in describing Annie. Or is it? I don’t know because the Dresden Dolls never struck the right notes for me personally. I found them too … pat in their spin, in their self-styling. I should have loved them, being a fan of weirdness and steampunk and tinkly music and frankly some also pretty dark shit, you know, wink wink SEXWISE, is what I mean! …

… but despite even our common kinks, I just never could get into them.

I am much fonder of Amanda Palmer’s wilder and I think maybe more heartfelt solo work, although I still find her onstage personality and even her videos a tough sell, which I am trying to wrap my mind around even as I admit it.

I guess I like a waifish, lost girl, which is not the persona that Amanda Palmer espouses as her stage self, whatever she is like personally. I don’t know if I identify better with that more overtly femme and even vulnerable type of hurt-me-save-me-just-pay-attention personality and so love them for that reason, or if they somehow awaken in me a perversely opposite number, like, “I will handle being the busty, snarky one, here, I will be the tomboy who barges in and solves your problems, you just sit there and look pretty and let me occasionally wreck you because sometimes your weakness makes me want to mercilessly stomp you ’til you squirm even as I recognize my own propensity for the same which only makes me want to beat you all the harder.”

Like, which even is it? I have no idea, because I can embody either at the flip of a coin. I am a piece of shit at the consistent feminist thing. I really suck at it. I flounder through it like I do every other social position of note, because I am no good at really sitting and admitting for sure what I feel about my identity, or where it fits in to the broader set of women as a whole.

In fact, I was downright miffed by this video for “What’s the Use of Wondrin’,” my favorite Amanda Palmer song, featuring Annie Clark who was yesterday’s Music Moment artist. I love this song because it is a purely creepy cover that brings out the underlying horror of the message of submission in the original song from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Carousel! (emphasis theirs. not mine).

Listen to the song without those images, and see how different it is. I hate this video because it makes a mockery of that position, of that hard-won submission. What the hell do you know about it, Amanda “Bossypants” Palmer? Just because being all riotous and shit comes to you naturally doesn’t mean the rest of us can’t find a sick pleasure in loving the wrong person, or even loving the right person in a really fucked up way. Is it so wrong to want to be totally taken care of, to for once in your life count on someone and allow them to set clear boundaries the transgression of which may occasionally result in punishment? (Oh, my god, I think I just heard Gloria Steinem’s jet start … yep, she is coming to get me…) But by the same token, I have to admit that I liked how weird and creepy the song was all along because I did recognize how ironically terrible its message was. So, I can’t have it both ways forever. Which is it going to be? We’ll see, I guess.

Tal vez sea el clima, tal vez sean las tardes lluviosas y grises que acompañan mis horas de clases, tal vez sea “el chivo” haciendo de las suyas en mi personalidad depresiva, tal vez sea la vida y sus situaciones…o tal vez simplemente sea la pinche escuela con todas su carga de tareas estúpidas y sus horarios INHUMANOS lo que me ha traído tirada en mi cama, con ganas solamente de escuchar música que acompañe mi humor y que me ayuden a endulzar la vida, haciéndola más tolerable…

Son en días como estos donde doy gracias por el sentido del oído que me permite deleitarme y transportarme a un mundo donde te sientes como en casa. Hoy quise hacer una lista de algunas cuantas canciones que suelo escuchar cuando estoy de emo. Pensaba dividir la lista por subtemas, pero me di cuenta de que si lo hacía no acabaría nunca…así que solo decidí poner unas cuantas rolas, porque estoy segura de que en un futuro cercano este post tendrá continuación…así que empiezo con esta:

1)      “Rue Des Cascades/ La parade” de Yann Tiersen:

Esta es una versión en vivo de un genio musical a mi parecer. Yann Tiersen es francés, toca una cantidad impresionante de instrumentos y en cada una de sus canciones es capaz de transmitir pasión, nostalgia, felicidad, tristeza…en fin, una amplia gama de emociones sin necesidad de tener una voz que acompañe la música. Esta canción en particular es acompañada de una cantante con una voz dulce logrando hacer de la canción un placer culposo. Siempre de mis favoritas para acompañar los días nostálgicos.

2)      “Pale Blue Eyes” de The Velvet Underground:

Por su sonido lento, decadente, depresivo y minimalista sumado a una letra sencilla que logra siempre recordarme a alguien…

3)      “With Twilight As My Guide” de The Mars Volta:

Esta canción es probablemente de las mejores, sino es que la mejor del nuevo disco del dúo dinámico Rodriguez-Bixler y es por lo mismo mi canción favorita de todo el álbum. Porque mediante Cedric nos muestra que el saber utilizar tu voz es tan complicado como tocar cualquier otro instrumento. Las notas alcanzadas en esta canción por Cedric son una verdadera maravilla…junto con una atmósfera fúnebre y obscura sumada con una letra con la que me puede identificar y entender totalmente (cosas rara en TMV) es la canción perfecta para pensar en darte un tiro en la cabeza…

4)      “The Kill”, de los Dresden Dolls:

Su intro de piano…la voz de amanda, capaz de transmitir el dolor y frustración que rodea la mente humana…aun no sé que hay en esta canción que me pone de un humor sombrío cada vez que tengo la oportunidad de escucharla. La parte final de la canción con su letra que describe muy bien la soledad puede ser una de las razones.

5)      “Song To Say Goodbye” de Placebo:

Con solo leer el título de la rola tienes para darte una idea de que se tratará la letra. Dedicada para tantas personas en mi vida…que ya es canción de cajón en mi lista de canciones depresivas jaja

6)      “Wish You Were Here” de Pink Floyd:

Putzz qué decir de este clásico de los Floyd…definitvamente esta canción siempre estará incluida entre mi lista de favoritas de cualquier clasificación. El sonido de la guitarra al principio de la canción está constantemente rondando mi mente y la letra dedicada siempre a alguien en mi vida, tiene un inmenso significado en mi miserable existencia

7)      “Dead Boy´s Poem” de Nightwish (obviamente)

Probablemente una de las mejores canciones de Nightwish (y esto en palabras del propio Tuomas Holopainen en el dvd “End Of Innocence”)…desde la primera vez que la escuché me cautivo. Tarja con su hermosa voz, capaz de transmitir todo el dramatismo y deseos más profundos cuando tu cuerpo ha dejado esta vida. Por la hermosa música, que comienza como un susurro y crece hasta convertirse en un derroche de energía mientras clama una verdad tan real

8)      “The Price Of Beauty” de My Dying Bride:

Maestros del Doom, subgenera del metal caracterizado por un sonido pesado y sombrío…con esto de entrada ya puedes esperar una canción triste. La voz de Aaron con sus sonidos guturales, sumados a los riffs malévolos y los batacazos lentos pero machacantes logran sumergirte en una esfera tan obscura como la depresión que te cargas…la letra es una belleza

9)      “Mad World” de Gary Rules:

Una de las canciones más bellas y tristes que he escuchado en mi vida. El sonido del piano acompaña dolorosamente y nostálgicamente una hermosa letra que te transporta a un mundo gris. Hermosa en verdad

De esta forma doy por concluida la primera parte de este post…no sé cuando continuará pero sé que lo hará porque hacen falta muchas más rolas y los días grises parecieran no irse pronto…

Katzenjammer muss nicht zwangsläufig die Auswirkungen des Genussmittelabusus beschreiben, sondern kann auch für ein musikalisches Ereignis der besonderen Art stehen…

Wer auf Balkanpop steht, wird Katzenjammer lieben. Und auch wer damit bis dato eigentlich nichts am Hut hatte, wird sich dem Charme und der Energie des norwegischen Quartetts nicht entziehen können. Das Ergebnis hört sich auch nicht etwa nach »Was passiert, wenn man einer Katze auf den Schwanz tritt?« an, sondern ist eine rasante Mischung aus Folk, traditioneller Jahrmarktmusik, Indie und Glam Rock, Country, Chanson, Cabaret und offensichtlich auch Pop, will man dem Albumtitel Tribut zollen. Die Damen aus Norwegen haben offensichtlich einen guten Sinn für Humor und schräge Sachen: Wer spielt schon einen Balalaika-Bass mit Katzengesicht? Hier und da glaubt man vielleicht, dass die Songs schief klingen, aber wer genau hinhört, stellt einfach fest dass das Quartett es eben versteht, virtuos mit Harmonien umzugehen. Gute Musikerinnen sind sie allemal, bedienen alle mehrere Instrumente und sehen auch noch schnuckelig aus. Sauerei! Sagt Jule. Kewl! Sagt Thorsten.

Katzenjammer – Le Pop

Das Debüt Le Pop ist ein Album, das einen nicht nur zum Mitgrooven oder Tanzen bringt, sondern immer wieder auch zum Schmunzeln und Lachen. Mindestens. Zum Wegschmeißen komisch ist z.B. der Iron Maiden-artige Refrain in »A Bar in Amsterdam« oder die Art und Weise, wie sie das Katchaturian-Zitat in »Der Kapitän« eingebaut haben. Und ganz zu Schweigen von dem, sagen wir mal »gepflegten Irrsinn« des Titelsongs »Le Pop«: Die perfekte Vertonung einer Fahrt auf einem Karussell oder einer Achterbahn. Auch »Virginia Clemm« würde einen wunderbaren Soundtrack für einen Tim-Burton-Film abgeben – wenn Danny Elfman also mal verhindert sein sollte… Dass es auch wunderschön und melancholisch geht, hört man bei »Wading in Deeper«, zum Dahinschmelzen schön. Jule könnte sich das zynischerweise gut bei einen Titanic-Soundtrack vorstellen, während Thorsten bei diesem Song untypischerweise jeglicher Zynismus vergeht, sondern er eher das ein oder andere Tränchen zurückhalten muss. Ja, so sind die Männer. »To The Sea« beweist eindeutig, dass die Tuba bei Alternative besser aufgehoben ist als auf dem Oktoberfest. Und im Bonus-Song »Ain’t No Thang« zeigen sie zum Schluss, dass sie auch richtig den Blues haben können.

Wenn man ein Album also abwechslungsreich und kurzweilig nennen kann, dann ist es wohl Le Pop. Es macht einfach einen Wahnsinns-Spaß. Ja, die vier sind schon lustige Gesellinnen (man beachte das »Modern-Dance-Video« auf der Myspace-Seite, s.u.), die sich übrigens während des Musikstudiums kennen gelernt haben (ach deshalb, ja genau), die Band 2005 gründeten, schon auf einigen bekannteren Festivals (z.B. SXSW oder hierzulande auf dem Taubertal-Festival) gespielt haben, bei Keane im Vorprogramm, ja und heute im Beat Club in Stuttgart (weitere aktuelle Termine s.u.).

Produziert wurde Le Pop von Mike Hartung, der bereits bei a-ha, Lene Marlin und aktuell Marit Larsen die Finger an den Reglern hatte. Anyone who has read this blog for any amount of time, or discussed with me the opportunities artists currently have online, will know I’m a big champion of how important fan interaction is to music artists, whether they be signed to a major label or totally independent, releasing work and marketing themselves.

Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls posted a blog (courtesy of Mike King) about her dealings with fans through social media, and what artists can receive with a little investment of their time with fans.

It is worth noting a few points before we break down what this case highlights for social media use for musicians:

1. Amanda is signed to a major label with an established fan base.
2. The nature of her music and shows are niche in style, which attracts a more cult audience which in turn tends to be more passionate and loyal to their favourite artists.
3. Amanda has been very open about her unhappiness of conditions on her major label deal.

While it is obvious that the sums Amanda talks of can only bear significance to an artist with her established fan base and are obviously not the result of something that could be undertaken too often, her embracing of the technology and ability to see an opportunity is what is important. She realised, somewhat inadvertently, the level of appreciation that fans have for getting the chance to interact with the artists they love. She has previously used Twitter to arrange short notice secret shows, or public meetings (which she found particularly useful for interacting with younger fans too young to attend shows) but the T-shirt sales and online auctions have shown that revenue can be generated even with very little outlay (just the artists’ time, and a quick-working assistant and web designer).

For many of the fans, the interaction alone will have strengthened their following of Amanda, and increasing loyalty and connection will carry through further into her career, particularly if she does manage to escape her major label deal. If she has sold an estimated 30,000 copies of her album through the label (and apparently is yet to receive any money from them), even at a fraction of that number with the loyal support from her fans directly, her potential for creative control and financial reward is incredible.

The majority of independent artists would obviously not have received the same results if they were to try the same as Amanda, but the revenue from the merch sales and auction were only a by-product of what Amanda was already doing by interacting with her fans. Her quick-thinking was what brought the money in. There is nothing to stop an independent artist with a lesser band following from creating such chances to interact with their fans. Nurturing a community with their fans should be seen as an incredibly important part of developing as a self-promoting artist. As a species humans are naturally very socially-driven, and the feeling of belonging to a group or being a part of what is happening is a great way to achieve loyalty that continues and builds the more it is maintained and invested in.

There are many ways in which artists can utilise the internet to such ends, and it’s great to see independent artists such as Terra Naomi embracing these platforms to connect with fans. Whether it be live streams, webchats, community discussions or free giveaways/competitions, there are an incredible number of things that bands can use at little to no cost, with technology making it easier than ever, all of which result in a stronger audience base with which to market the revenue-generating items.

Amanda Palmer

With spectacular support from Zen Zen Zo, a unique and terrifying part of the five-star dance spectacle, Zeitgeist, Amanda Palmer gives herself a lot to live up to. A proper cabaret entrance though, slowly stepping down the stairs of the Picture House in full 1930s trappings with horn accompaniment is a special start that the former creative force behind Dresden Dolls takes glee in.

Her uniquely passionate audience of misfits, punks, toffs and dandies gives her the freedom to fully live up to the seduction, tease and humour of a show built on the burlesque, and offering a show to match her songs.

Alongside Dolls’ classics like ‘Missed Me’ and solo efforts like ‘Astronaut’, we’re treated to storytelling from her recent book, co-authored by current beau, Neil Gaiman. The man himself even makes an appearance, stepping in as roadie to gift Palmer with her treasured ukulele.

Amanda’s sister, Alyson, too shows up to sing backing on a particularly effective ‘Delilah’, her frail, unlessoned voice all so more poignant in a tale of denial in an abusive relationship.

Coming here without knowing Palmer’s work beforehand may have been an overwhelming experience of confusion and notions of being far too under-dressed. But her work and life inspire a devotion in her fans that come in their hundreds, as the show becomes of series of in-jokes, stories and guest-appearances all too welcomed by all in attendance.

It works well, and contributes to a show that transcends musicianship into real performance. This stuff needs to be seen at the Playhouse.
