Timeless: the brown Doc

down the check list,  find one pair that you really like and you can do a lot with. Perhaps a nice pair of brown Dr. Martens would be right up your ally. They have a rugged look if worn with crew and v-neck shirts and jeans, and more of a prep look if worn with sports shirts, ties, and blazers. In brief: start with something versatile, comfortable, and add to the boot collection from there.

A couple people have been asking me about what dress shoe brands I like. Well, here’s a quick list I put together for you all. It’s certainly not exhaustive, but hopefully it helps you guys familiarize yourself with some premier shoe brands. Just FYI, most of these shoes are quite high-quality, so they’ll probably be much more expensive than shoes at your average Kenneth Cole / Calvin Klein level.

Dress Shoes

Edward Green $$$$ : Stunningly amazing shoes, but will easily cross the $1k mark. Not for the light-hearted… or light-walleted.

John Lobb $$$$: Also extremely amazing shoes, and a direct competitor to Edward Green. Will cross the $1k mark easily just as well. The finish on these bad boys is second to none.

Gaziano & Girling $$$$: Okay okay, I’ll stop with the $1k+ shoes here. G&G is also one of the premier makers of ready-to-wear dress shoes, just like John Lobb and Edward Green.

Crockett & Jones $$$: A solid shoemaker from England that makes some of my favorite shoes in the world. Great design, high quality construction.

Santoni $$$: Pure Italian designs using extremely supple, high quality leather. Comfort and design in one.

Tricker’s $$$: Pretty innovative company getting press for doing some cool collaborations recently, but ultimately they are pros at their craft in their own right.

Alfred Sargent $$$: Quality English shoemaker that gets a lot less attention than they deserve.

Peal & Co. $$$: High-end Brooks Brothers brand name, but they’re actually Crockett & Jones or Alfred Sargent shoes, depending on which one you get.

Ralph Lauren $$$: I’m talking about their “Made in England” shoes, as they’ll be constructed by Crockett & Jones. This applies to POLO Ralph Lauren shoes as well.

Church $$$: Solid company, with a solid reputation. Amazing quality and attention to detail, highly recommended.

Alden $$$: One of the last standing classic American shoemakers. Quality of their stuff is absolutely rock solid, but a bit more bulky in design than, say, an Italian shoe.

Tod’s $$: Never really tried these on, but have heard rave reviews about them consistently. Might want to find them on sale though, as value isn’t the best.

Allen Edmonds $$: Best bang for the buck high quality shoes. Made in the U.S. and is probably the standard in American-made shoes.

Loake $$: Another nice shoe maker that I respect quite a bit. A very good alternative to Allen Edmonds.

Meermin $$: Simple shoes, made with very nice attention to detail. Harder to get, since I believe they’re in Europe, but worth a try.

Florsheim by Duckie Brown $$: Duckie Brown makes some interesting designs, but I’ve been a fan of his partnership with Florsheim. Pretty good quality stuff and you can find it on sale often.

Charles Tyrwhitt $: Follows very classic designs, and provides pretty high quality shoes. Good news is they often go on sale as well, thus giving them one $ sign (still will cost you over $100 though).

Johnston & Murphy $: Solid entry level brand for shoes just as well. Don’t expect these to compete with most of the above brands though.

There you go! Get yourself a pair of dress shoes. They are investment pieces, so I’ll say this again… they’re worth the extra buck or two.

We started the day off at Cole Haan, and I was able to shop uninterrupted, which was really nice.

Those brown/red Sperry’s will be mine soon!

I love camo, but I can’t say I’d ever pick these up.

Now, onto the goods…

These are a few of my favorite pick ups from this season:

Camp socks were on sale at the J.Crew Men’s shop. If your feet are cold, invest in some better socks! Plus, I needed new socks for my new Lunargrands. I’m still waiting to take these out.

The holiday sales forced me to…I was able to get a generous discount, so I ended up getting new dress shoes as well. Air Adams Cap-Toe Oxfords. They’re extremely comfortable with the Nike Air soles.

And of course, the accessories:

Still waiting for more items to come in, but overall this season was loaded with sales. As always, I made sure to take advantage of them.

To be worn to do a task to not stand still.

There is one more item that is filled each and every year

by a special one-

The stocking hanging over the fireplace, yeah, Santa fills

that one, he gets the job done.

I wasn’t quite fair because I didn’t give you all the information you really needed.

Very important – you’re flying to the place where you get on the ship so you only get 2 bags that weigh 50 lbs. or less. For you boys that might not change your list. For us girls that may have just caused someone an aneurism.

Other important information: You’ll need a backpack or small bag for your overnight excursions because you’ll be away from the ship for as long as days at a time.

You’ll want to bring thank you gifts for your homestay families and school/art supplies for the children at the schools where you’ll be helping.

The coffee on the ship is nasty so you’ll want to bring your own if you’re a big coffee drinker.

Snacks are a must, as the staple food items in the cafeteria are pasta, potatoes and pork.

The walls in your room are magnetic and you’re not allowed to tape or tack anything to them. So, you’ll want to bring magnets and pictures, maps or art to make your room homey.

They’ll do your laundry about every 10 days and it’s $6 a bag. There’s always the danger of shrinkage or bleaching. So you’ll probably want to bring laundry soap, a clothesline and extra hangers so you can do your laundry in your sink.

You either have to pay $60 to have your textbooks shipped to the ship or put them in your luggage. Depending on how many classes you’re taking that could weigh a LOT. You could also pay less and have them shipped to the hotel where you’ll stay the night before you get on the ship. That’s a little risky…

Did you remember all your electronics? Laptop or iPad, camera, camera cord, extra memory cards, chargers, outlet adapter, iPod, extra batteries and headlamp (suggested for some of your overnight excursions and other adventures).

How about safety? Strongly recommended to bring a money belt or other hidden wallet. Also, a fake wallet with expired credit card and a few bills to hand to a mugger just in case, and an extra credit card that will stay in your room.

Okay, what about clothes? You’ve got to have a coat and warm shoes for the winter climates. Rain boots or waterproof shoes are a must. You’ll be doing a LOT of walking and hiking. Do you want to bring your hiking boots? Don’t forget, there’s a ball and some nice dinners so you’ll want some dress shoes. Most of the time you’ll be in the tropics so sandals or flops… Shoes is the hardest part for me ‘cuz I love me some shoes!!!

You should carry a scarf with you during your excursions in case you have to cover your head and shoulders. You’ll also want to keep a sun hat, rain poncho, bug spray, sun screen, sun glasses, toilet paper, pepto bismol tablets, and hand sanitizer in your day pack. If you’re going to be away from the ship for more than a couple days you’ll also need a sleep sac, water, a couple protein bars and a change of clothes.

I won’t even go into daily clothing. It’s different for everyone. It definitely needs to be light weight since you’re doing your laundry in the room and it takes forever to dry. Some girls bring mostly sun dresses, others bring shorts and t-shirts. The really good ones can get away with just a few changes of clothes for the whole trip.

You boys have it easy. Your swim trunks can double as shorts. Two pairs of shoes, no “girlie” supplies, toothbrush, toothpaste and deodorant. You don’t even have to shave if you don’t want to. I’d love to not shave for 4 months! Hmmm…

But maybe you’re not really looking for the most up-to-date designs available on the market and you don’t genuinely wish to wear what most people are wearing. There are plenty of options if this sounds like you.

Funky or junky?

Shoes – Yapi

A great pair of shoes will take you from boring to sharp. Rotate a couple pairs.  Wear a belt that matches.  No clunky rubber soles. For most men, you probably will find the black cap-toe oxford to be the most accessible and affordable option. The cap-toe shoe will be versatile in the rest of your wardrobe for when you wear a regular suit, making it a better value purchase.

Here’s some basic guidance on what to look for in formal footwear:

• Black calf leather (patent leather optional)
• Laced shoes should be balmorals; no blüchers
• Plain-toe and cap-toes are acceptable; avoid brouging and wingtips
• Opera pumps are an acceptable slip-on; avoid loafers

All the Chukkas feature black leather lining, black round waxed laces, dark metal eyelets, natural leather welt and a white or vintage rubber wedge outsole.

Another business casual look is the Cardigan and Skinny Tie. Sometimes I don’t want to wear a blazer because a) I don’t feel like it, and b) cardigans are just so warm and comfortable. This cardigan is from Jones New York and is made of cashmere (yes cashmere) and I would wear it everyday if I could. The dress shirt if from Calvin Klein and is their Steel line, the tie is also from Calvin Klein, the pants are Slim Fit from H&M and of course they’re over my Stacy Adams dress shoes. On a side note you will only see me in a skinny tie, I prefer a smaller smaller tie and an even smaller knot, I always tie my ties with a Four-in-hand knot.

Slim Dark Jeans

Buying Tips:

-Try on many pairs to see which jeans fit your frame. Bring a friend, relative, loved one, or someone who is good at deciding the fit of clothing. Girls are typically good at this sort of thing.

-When buying a dark pair of jeans, make sure it is slim enough to look good with a dark blazer when going out semi-casual events.

-Use the extra cash that you save from the Black Friday sale and get your jeans tailored.

Sales: Black Friday Deals (Most are unknown at this time, but from the researched I have gathered Levi’s, Nordstroms, and Express should definitely  be having a sale.)

Shades:

Buying Tips:

-Buy glasses based on the shape of your head. “Just eyewear” has a great article with images on this topic (http://www.justeyewear.com/how-to-choose-a-frame).

Sales: I could not find any information on sales at this time, but expect sunglass hut and other outlets to sale sunglasses for cheap(especially since its winter). Also check out stores like Ross. It is not uncommon to go to a Ross in a high income city and find Ray Bans for sixty dollars.

Graphic Tee’s and T-Shirts

Buying Tips:

-Go through the steps of the Find your Style Series before buying graphic tees. It will be much easier to buy graphic tees once you know what your personal style is.

-Typical advice tells you to wear a slim fitting graphic-t that reaches right at the belt buckle (the Druks Paris is a good example). This is great advice but I would not worry about that too much. Graphic Tees shrink and wear out. Your body will change as your work out and t-shirt will fit differently. My advice is to not worry about it too much and make sure your t-shirt is not baggy and fits well.

Sales:

Check out Indie T-shirt Companies first, they will have the best deals and most originality for their graphic t-shirts. Obey has already confirmed their sale for Black Friday (http://obeyclothing.com/blog/?p=19141). Also, Target has surprisingly cool t-shirts if you skim through them.

Peacoat:

Buying Tips:

-Do not get a peacoat that is “overly slim.  A peacoat is made to be a layer. At the very least a peacoat should fit at least a dress shirt under the layer.

-If you live in a rainy climate, make the plunge and buy yourself a classic rain-coat that can fit a suit underneath it.

Sales: Nordstroms should have a decent sale on peacoats. For a stylish, but cheaper quality, check out H&M and Zara’s. All of these will have black Friday sales.

Leather/ Denim Jackets

Buying Tips:

-Leather/Denim jackets have recently become much more popular. The reason for this is these type of jackets work for many archetypes (Rocker, Biker, Artist, etc). Getting one will add a little edge to your outfit.

-Make Sure It Fits! Do not buy a baggy leather or denim jacket. It will look sloppy. A general guideline is to make sure the bottom of the jacket touches the belt buckle and the jacket conforms to your body like the picture above. Also, you will look better in a jacket if your in good shape.

Sales: Black Rivet is a fairly unknown company, but their outlets will definitely have great sales on Black Friday. Also, check Levi’s for Denim jackets. I bought mine three years ago there on Black Friday for fifty U.S dollars. It looks exactly the same now as the day I bought it on the shelf.

White Formal Shirt

Buying Tips:

-Make sure it is the best quality white shirt that you can afford. This is what you will be wearing to work, dinner, dates, etc. The white oxford shirt is the most versatile piece of clothing in your wardrobe by far.

-Get it tailored.

Sales: The possibilities are endless. Almost any high quality outlet will have these shirts on sale.

Scarf

-Men need to wear more scarves, especially in the west coast. They add flair and elegance to any outfit and their easy to wear. But, rarely do I see men wear them. (I will write an article specifically on scarves in the future)

-Buy a neutral color scarf, like Tom Brad, and it will work well as long as the rest of your outfit is neutral.

-Buy a scarf for extra warmth. If you live in a colder climate like Chicago,where it can drop to 0 degrees Celsius, then don’t buy the skinny scarves. Buy one of the fatter ones with extra cloth to keep you warm.

Sales: I could not find one specifically for sale. I suggest checking out Nordstroms. Target had some decent looking “skinny scarves” for cheap. But unless you live in a warmer winter climate, I would not suggest buying one.

Casual Shoes

Buying Tips:

-What type of casual shoe you buy will depend entirely on your style and needs. I believe the best bang for your buck are a pair of converse. My favorite converse shoes are neutral Jack Purcells. They are the best bang for your buck as far as how many outfits you can pair with converse.

Sales: I bought a pair of Jack Purcells for $30 at Nordstroms one time one clearance. There should be many other shoe venders having a sell on Black Friday.

Dress Shoes:

Buying Tips:

-You will hear from other columnists to get dark brown shoes because dark brown shoes add more of a stylish touch to a navy blue suit. This is true, but starting off, you should get dark black shoes first. They are expected in professional settings. This will be more useful for job interviews, meetings, etc.

-Do not get shoes that have square blocky tips. It will look like you slipped your feet in a cardboard box.

Sales: Again, I suggest Nordstroms. They have good quality footwear and they usually have great Black Friday deals.

Cardigan

Buying Tips:

-My advice is to start of with a neutral cardigan. A gray cardigan is my suggestion. It will look good as a layer with your new dark slim jeans.

-The fit of the cardigan should similar to the leather jacket.

Sales: Banana Republic had a great sale on Cardigans on last Black Friday. The quality of the cardigan is decent, and it still looks new after a year of use.

Neutral Tie

Buying Tips:

-At the very beginning, it is unnecessary to get really flashy patterns. A neutral tie like the one above will go well with a variety of dress shirts. This includes the white dress shirt that was suggested.

Sales: Check out thrift stores and bargain outlets. They will have the best bang for your buck when it comes to ties.

Accessories

Buying Tips:

-Make sure to buy a really dark good quality belt for suit and jeans. Besides that, there is no advice to give. Your accessories depend entirely on your style.

Sales: The best places to buy accessories our independent vendors. Before black friday, research where certain vendors go to advertise their clothing. If one fits your style visit them on Black Friday. It’s not uncommon to get really cool necklaces and bracelets for under ten dollars.

What about Suits?

Getting your first suit is a whole different monster. I suggest not getting a suit for Black Friday. A suit is definitely the most important outfit in a man’s wardrobe. Time, money, and knowledge on quality are essential in getting a suit. There will be an article dedicated specifically to suits.

Let me explain to you the types of shoes women are talking about when they say they judge a man by his shoes.

Doc Martens

There is nothing in this world that is sexier than a man in Doc Martens.  I suppose the brand isn’t important but I like boots more the more they resemble docs.  Docs are an awesome shoe and they have to be shown-off for the full effect.  There are two ways to wear docs.  I will accept no other boot/pant styling.

Pants tucked into the boot.  Preferably with skinny pants so it’s a seamless line but I’ve seen it done well with baggier pants.

With cuffed pants.  This style works better if you carry weight on your legs or wear a baggier pant.

Both styles send a shiver up my spine and if I were a fascist dictator all men would have to wear this combo daily.

Chukkas

If I were a guy these would be my go-to shoes.  Chukkahs are really attractive because they’re so thin and have such a simple cut to them they look casual but they’re so tailored and often they come in either leather or suede  so they also look like you put effort into your appearance.  They’re an easy casual shoe that look great with either slacks or jeans.

Double Monks

Double monks are the king of dress shoes.  They are hands down the most stylish formal shoe available.  The wrap around style keeps them slender and they don’t look like clown shoes which is always the worry with men’s dress shoes.  The wrap around feature also makes them look really polished and elegant.  Like docs I think they also should be shown-off and they look great with a cuffed pant.

Sleek Sneakers

Atheist Shoes Berlin

Chucks, Asic Tigers, Atheist shoes all have this sleek, narrow look to them that is so elegant.  These are sneakers that you could wear with a suit.  They’re very simple but they look a thousand times better than any other men’s sneaker because they have an elegant silhouette.

Boat Shoes

Boat shoes scream old money.  They make any outfit look really preppy but when the preppy look is done well, boat shoes look awesome on men.  They’re slip on shoes that make you look like you own a yacht.  What more do you need?!  Boat shoes are like the cheat code to classing up a casual outfit.

Ohhh the Tuxedo Vest, when a blazer is just too much, the tuxedo vest is just right. A must in all wardrobes this piece is perfect for a business setting or even a wedding. Dressed up with a blue white dress shirt (as pictured above) or dressed down with a white v-neck t-shirt this piece can go either way. This vest is from H&M and is just their most basic with a plain black front and a faux silk back. I’ve put it with my favourite shoes from Stacy Adams and as always I coupled black pants with brown shoes.

If the dudes in your life are nice enough to supply you with lots of ideas, you are lucky! But for others who have to guess, here are some of my ideas that have been pretty fail safe:

Clothing and Accessories

Non-iron shirts. If your guy has to wear collared shirts to work, he will LOVE non-iron!

Thermal tee. These are great for winter and will get him out of his old fraternity tees [ahem, to no one in particular].

A Polo sweater. Men love the iconic pony emblem.

Leather gloves. These are by L.L. Bean.

A subtle scarf. Most men don’t want something bright and flashy. But a nice neutral scarf is a great gift! Polo.

A parka [Eddie Bauer]…

or a pea  coat. I think coats make great gifts! Gap.

Nice dress shoes – a necessity for every man. Ted Baker.

Super cozy slippers. He will thank you for these.

PJs. Always a good gift. Merona at Target.

The style of shoe you choose to wear makes all the difference in how the feet, legs and back feel.  Are you a flip flop wearer?  These are very bad for all three of those body areas according to the American Orthopedic Association.   In an article by John Whyte, MD, MPH (www.huffingtonpost.com/john-whyte-md-mph/) he talks about the findings of researchers about the effects of wearing this popular style of shoe.  The long and short of the article is that this style is a bad choice unless you desire to pay the doctors big bills in the long run. We have a personal friend who went through painful reconstructive foot surgery back in May.  She spent 4 months on the equivalent of bed rest and is just now beginning to get around.

Then what style of shoe is recommended?  “Contrary to popular belief, completely flat shoes are not recommended when standing on your feet all day. According to the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario workers, your heel should be elevated by at least 1/4 inch. This allows the show to have a good arch support. The article also states that the toes need plenty of room.
Remember the pointed toe shoes and how they pinch.  Take care of your feet and they will take care of you.  Remember as you shop for that perfect pair of shoes, the heel needs to be not less than ¼ inch, nor more than 2 inches.  You can also find more on the subject at www.clutchmagonline.com/…/thought-heels-were-bad-see-ho .

We sport moustaches to help raise money and awareness for male prostate cancer research. Anyways this is my Suspenders & Bow Tie look, and is me being what I call, Geek Chic. Everyone owns a regular tie, but let’s be honest, the bow tie is way more fun, I couldn’t feel more dapper wearing this outfit and it definitely gets comments. The bow tie and suspenders came as a set from H&M for $15 (which was a steal I might add) and the shirt was also from H&M and is their Easy Iron collection.
