I really shouldn’t have stayed up till half past two. On a Monday night. With the whole week of work still ahead. I was running all morning on kopi gao, and still half not there.

But it was Eddie Izzard.

And then this.

It might be because it was past 2am. It might be because my colleague and I were just earlier on Monday speaking, no, attempting to speak, Spanish and such, babbling incoherently for five minutes. “Dove è la biblioteca?” “Où est la bibliothèque?” ”Donde esta la biblioteca?” “No, gracias. Soy alérgico a los crustáceos.” Useful to know if you happen to be in Rome/Paris/Barcelona or almost anywhere in South America. Not so useful if you’d like directions to the Coloseum/Champs-Élysées/Machu Picchu, and not the public library. (Was ist das? Nein Deutsche sprache? – Apparently so. No sprechen sie Deutsche.)

If you’ve ever taken a foreign language class. If you’ve ever travelled in a country that doesn’t speak English. You may not understand every word said, but you might still find it funny. Me, I laughed so hard I couldn’t stop crying and by the end of it couldn’t breathe and had started wheezing. Heh.

New research indicates a strong link between breast cancer and the wearing of constrictive garments like bras. In fact, blockage or sluggishness of the lymphatic system impacts significantly on cancers, chronic and degenerative diseases and on your general level of health. Tight garments of all types, including accessories like belts, result in direct interference with the movement of lymphatic fluid. The lymphatic system is, in effect, the circulatory system for your immune function, which stretches across the surface of the body as a network of nodes, branches and fluid. Sluggishness of the lymphatic system results from lack of exercise. You have three times as much lymph fluid as blood and its movement is critical to all of its jobs in the body.

Disease-fighting white blood cells are manufactured in the lymph nodes and carried to bodily sites as needed by thread-like “veins”. Along with the circulatory system, the lymph has the job of maintaining inner cleanliness by filtering and carrying away toxic waste. The cancer connection starts when an engorged lymph system starts to farm out its toxic wastes to weak organs, just to get the toxins out of circulation. Impacts to health start long before tumours form. When the “garbage collector” of the body is overloaded, blocked or narrowed, the consequences range from the inconvenient to the serious.

Medical anthropologist Sydney Singer and assistant Soma Grismaijer, authors of Dressed to Kill, have advised against the wearing of bras or constrictive clothing, pointing out that breast cancer is rampant in cultures where these items of fashion are popular. Overloading of the lymph system is common in the modern world, where polluted environments and toxic constituents to our food place a heavy burden on its filtering functions all over the body. Tumours in the lymph system, or lymphomas, are on the rise. As the lymph system is pivotal as a drain for the body’s toxic load, our general inner cleanliness depends on its healthy functioning.

Health spas and cancer clinics all over the world have for many years used lymphatic drainage and exercise for recovery and prevention of life-threatening disease. The lymph system needs special stimulation or exercise, which is why nature placed lymph nodes in the areas of the body that have the greatest degrees of freedom to move: near the spine, neck, groin and arms. Frequent stimulation is required because the fluid in it moves in only one direction – down. Lymphatic drainage massage is one option. Using or buying a rebounder trampoline is another. A Canadian video, Lymphatic System Exercise gives instruction in gentle, targeted routines for squeezing each set of lymph nodes. If you dance, perform Tai Chi, swim or participate in sports, you are already supporting your lymphatic system.

Check yourself for signs of lymphatic system stress:

* swollen hands and feet at the end of the day * slow recovery from viral illnesses and infections * painful swelling of your lymph nodes (including tonsils and appendix) * aggravation of any condition ending in “itis” (arthritis, bronchitis) * compromised energy and mental clarity * insomnia resulting from excessive acid in the tissues * cysts and fibroid tumours * and finally, cancer.

Often, the success of horror movies and thrillers depends on the twist factor: if it’s clever, it can make a good movie legendary; if it’s contrived, then it can leave audiences angry; and if it’s spoiled, it can make you not want to see the movie at all.  The relative paucity of decent movie twists amid reams of clichéd (e.g., “It was only a dream!”) and WTF-for-WTF’s-sake endings illustrates how hard it can be to pull them off.  As a result, filmmakers (especially screenwriters) have to carefully pace the clues so that the audience doesn’t puzzle out the twist in advance, yet the twist still has some basis in the rest of the movie.

Brian De Palma’s 1980 thriller Dressed to Kill is a bit of an exception to this rule.  I figured out whodunit fairly early during the movie (I’d say about halfway), and this actually made the movie more exciting.  I usually don’t try to guess the end of a movie; I prefer to be taken along for the ride.  But De Palma’s hints to the killer’s identity that are planted throughout the movie are more like giant flashing arrows to film buffs, especially those familiar with the genre.

(WARNING: Some mild spoilers ahead for a 29-year-old movie.)

First, De Palma often borrows from Alfred Hitchcock, from recycling the master’s themes to quoting specific camera shots.  But Dressed to Kill’s riffing on Psycho is perhaps the biggest swipe of them all.  Once I figured out that De Palma was using Angie Dickinson as a MacGuffin in the same way as Hitchcock used Janet Leigh in Psycho, I started making the connection.  The parallels come fast and quick, from the memorable shower sequence, to the reveal of the villain, to the explanatory epilogue with a psychiatrist spouting Freudian psychobabble.  But while Hitchcock hid the killer’s motivation until the closing scenes, here De Palma places it front and center throughout the movie.  Michael Caine’s character, a psychiatrist, treats patients with gender issues, while Nancy Allen’s character watches an interview on TV with a post-surgery M-to-F transsexual.

Second, De Palma sticks to one of the principal rules of the genre, which Roger Ebert has termed the Law of Conservation of Characters: “Any main character whose purpose is not readily apparent must be more important than he or she seems.”  I’ll add to that my Law and Order corollary: if a recognizable actor is playing a part that’s smaller than you’d expect, then he or she will be the culprit.

I would have still appreciated Dressed to Kill if the ending had been a total surprise.  But by letting viewers employ their knowledge of movies (which is typically useless, at least in my case), De Palma creates a subtext that leads to a richer enjoyment of the film.  I was biting my nails to whole time trying to figure out how the killer would be revealed, and every interaction with that character took on a sinister bent that would have otherwise been absent.   (There’s also the fun of playing spot-the-movie-reference.)  With Dressed to Kill, De Palma succeeded at the tricky task of making a film that serves both as a tight mainstream thriller and as an homage to thrillers in general, Hitchcock in particular.

I have to confess, as much as I wanted to resist looking for video of this, everything about that description is ten thousand percent RIGHT and is ringing a whole lot of ekitty bells over here. After doing Spring and Summer 2009 shoot, Taegoon along with Afterschool have been chosen for Fall and Winter 2009.

The shooting took place on the 7th this month and shows an upgraded visual. His style has transformed into a new neutral yet sexy and stylish image. During the shoot, Taegoon was able to work hard and turn it into a very friendly atmosphere. A representative for the brand says Taegoon is a very hardworking and promising rookie who shows infinite potential. Because this fits well with the brand, he was chosen to model.

The campaign will begin late September. Meanwhile, Taegoon is expected to make a comeback with the third mini album next week with Afterschool following the next month. Incidentally, Afterschool’s Joo-Yeon is also in the MV for the title track, Betrayed.

Brian De Palma (born Brian Russell DePalma on September 11, 1942) is an American film director.
