After the exhibition at the Petit Palais, the Museum of Fine Arts in Paris, save the date of the Designer Frimousses dolls auction on 19 November at Drouot Montaigne, Paris’s prestigious auction house. Since 2003, fashion designers and artists have worked to create something beautiful to help children of Darfur, crafting dolls that become veritable works of art. The whole amount raised during the auction will support the vaccination programme in one of the regions most devastated by the deadly conflict there. Today, more than 4.7 million people are affected, of which 2.2 million are children. Thanks to the Designer Frimousse operation, under the aegis of Laeticia Hallyday, ambassador for UNICEF France, UNICEF carries out the fight for children vaccination every year in the region of Darfur. Vaccination, a method that is both very effective and inexpensive, would prevent these deadly diseases from a very young age (diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio) and would eradicate this scourge that affects thousands of children every day. The 2008 sale raised 219,130 Euros, used directly on the ground to finance emergency : in the Darfur region, 260,000 children and 195,000 pregnant women received vaccines. Don’t forget these dolls will be sold at auction on 19 November at Drouot Montaigne:

Depuis 2003, créateurs de mode et artistes créent des poupées de collection uniques, de véritables oeuvres d’art pour venir en aide aux enfants du Darfour. La totalité des fonds collectés lors de la vente aux enchères soutiendra les programmes de vaccination dans une des régions les plus dévastées par des conflits meurtriers. Soit aujourd’hui, 4,7 millions de personnes, dont 2,2 millions d’enfants affectées. Grâce à l’opération Frimousses de Créateurs sous l’égide de Laeticia Hallyday, Marraine de l’Unicef France, l’Unicef se bat tous les ans pour la vaccination des enfants dans la région du Darfour. L’édition Frimousses de Créateurs 2008 a permis d’envoyer sur le terrain 219 130 € pour financer les activités de vaccination en urgence. 260 000 enfants et 198 000 femmes enceintes recevront des vaccins. Okay, I know that Paris Fashion Week ended a couple of weeks ago, but it took me a while to look at all of the shows because (1) They are so fabulous and (2) There are so many!  The designers showing in Paris definately kept the standard of the being the best.  I was absolutely blown away by some of the shows and there were an impressive amount of collections where I loved every piece (Chanel, Tsumori Chisato, Givenchy, Rue du Mail, Valentino, Isabel Marant….to name a few).  AMAZING.  Anyway, there were many pieces that represented the trends that I’ve mentioned in the past few posts, but there were also a couple new looks that I will talk about as well.  But for the most part, for the Paris collections, anything goes!  I saw some pieces that were super structured, some that were relaxed, some pleated, some tight, bright colors, dark neturals and everything in between!  Here are some examples of what I thought were the best:

Trend: Cute Minis

Just like the rest, these are from the designers’ Spring line, but these cute little numbers are easily layered and totally in for the Fall!

Trend: Grecian Inspired Draping

This look is so flattering and serves as a great palate to add layers.

Trend: Metallics

This look wasn’t as flashy or abundant on the Paris runways, but it definitely still had a presence!

Trend: Jumpsuits & Rompers

These pieces are so easy to wear right now.  They are perfect with tights, a cardigan and a great belt!

Trend: Asymmetric

Trend: Ruffles & Bows

Lots and lots of ruffles!

Staple: Cool Jackets

Especially now, a unique jacket really makes an outfit pop.  Check these out for inspiration:

Staple: Cute Shorts

Ultra-feminine and comfortable, enough said!  Flowy shorts are perfect to pair with patterned tights when it gets a bit chilly.

Staple: White Suit

Classic, chic & never goes out of style.

Styling Trend: Strong v. Feminine

Balance any outfit with this technique!  In Paris, it was mostly used with draping.

Styling Trend: Mixing Prints

Can be tricky, but take a few pointers from Dries Van Noten; the majority of their looks were compiled of patterned layers.

New Trend: Relaxed Pants

Whereas we saw a lot of Harem cut pants on the other runways, in Paris the entire pant leg was relaxed.  But designers also used lux, flowy fabrics, to make these comfortable pieces still luxurious, chic, and ready for a night on the town.  Some are still tailored, but others remind me of a genie pant! (in a good way!)

New Trend: Tuxedo-Inspired

There were a large amount of pieces on the Paris runways that seemed to be inspired by the tuxedo.  Whether the focus is on the lapel, cumberbund, bowtie, dickey, or simply the jacket, these pieces are a great way to dress up a casual outfit.

New Trend: Textures

What’s a great way to amp up some of your pieces? Look for ones that are more than two dimensional!  Textures add a unique dynamic to your every-day outfit.  Not sure where to start?  This is a great time to get textural sweaters, a fun, textured shirt to wear under a cardigan, a furry vest, or even something as simple as a quilted accesory.

It can be argued that global culture, emerging as communication and travel out pace our own comforts of community, is not the bold new paradigm it is made out to be. With the history of textiles as a record of trade and cultural dissemination and consequently fashion, there has always been a global culture. From the early sailing Phoenician civilization who exposed their Hellenic neighbors to flax fiber, to the Venetians who traded into a taste for Chinese silk and Oriental* decoration, to the couture designs of Paul Poiret — the first in Paris to appropriate in its entirety an Eastern vocabulary for dress, there has always been an exchange of ideas, aesthetics, and cultural symbols through the trade of one of the world’s earliest commodities.

In the 70’s there was a cause for ethnic investigation in fashion, taking a cue from the previous decade that sought answers in Eastern philosophy and practices, hippies they would be called, or just a failed effort to modernize western thought. The 80’s saw any global perspective subject to the trivializing of the traveling wealthy (notably the patronizing tones of YSL’s flair for the exotic, as if he ransacked a Shanghai gift shop for its souvenirs to make a flash of couture). And in the later part of the decade it became a full on mission as artists (Keith Herring and his African inspired art) and designers sought understanding in what was thought to be a simpler and more natural life. Each of these approaches to world culture coming and then inevitably going.

It’s difficult for ethnic styles to reveal their immense modernity within the Western fashion system without stirring clichés of these past expressions. Yet, recession speaking, necessity enables practical thinking and that makes a shorter road to modernity than exuberance. If designers this season looked back to ethnic styles — and the masters who understood their meaning — it is because they found in them genuine solutions for our changing lifestyles and not surface appreciation for the foreign and exotic, that is, only if a contemporary global culture is truly on the cusps.

Usually, I don’t bother photographing my casual outfits because I don’t find them too exciting, but I decided to post something simple today to change things up a bit.

I’m wearing a navy jacket from Balenciaga that I picked up in 2002 (IIRC), a Thakoon for Target tee, Forever 21 jeans, and Dries Van Noten booties.  Like the jacket, the booties are from a long time ago.  I picked them up at one of the Nordstrom “Caravan Sales” I love so well.

9. Las fresitas de Yves Saint Laurent. Kate Moss ya dijo desde la fron row que ella las quería.

Irrestisible fall 09 collection by Kean Etro giving the nowadays prep-wardrobe a hispter-soul-touch as if saville row gentlemen meet the countercultural mini-hippies movement.Kean Etro’scollection is more of a bourgeois -bohemian- executive sophisticately suited.So far, a few designers- Comme des Garcons, Yohji Yamamoto, Dries Van Noten -have been able to keep in this sense of casual comfort while being dressed up.Kean did it in a colourfully sui generi way:  Homey, warm and refined…

Only Belgian fashion designer Dries Van Noten can mix ethnic patterns so effortlessly in each collection. While this wasn’t his best reviewed collection, I happened to thoroughly enjoy it. He used thick chunky jewelry and brightly colored geometric patters that suddenly made clashing oh so cool again…Oh, how I wish I could pull off the boxy silhouette!

I guess it’s a great week for the leather motorcycle jackets. Get them cheap before it gets even colder and more people are looking to bid on them. Bebe Metallic Leather Jacket – $1.04 with 2 days left. STEAL!

The cool strangeness of these intrigued me. These vintage Christian Dior sunglasses are fixed at $249.

YSL Okay it’s not cheap but it sure is a massive discount from $795. It’s $212.50, and it’s probably shinier and more reflective than every other metallic bag… ever.

A few weeks ago, I came across a great double-breasted blazer from one of my favorite new labels, Company of We.

Most likely a reaction the DB’s of my youth, immortalized in the First Communion photos at my parents’ house, I’ve pretty much had a blanket policy against them since I first started dressing myself.  Turns out, that might have been a bit harsh.  The Company of We version nods to its brass-buttoned forebearers, but the slim fit downplays it stodgy past.  Worn with a t-shirt, it’s smart, but definitely on this side of casual.

Company of We isn’t the only label giving the DB another chance live outside of mafiosos and 80’s business tycoons; they’ve been featured prominently in SS 2010 collections from a whole spectrum of designers — from Alexander McQueen to Michael Bastian and everyone in between.

The 80’s reference is there, but designers sent them down the runway paired with jeans, shorts, open collars, and boat shoes, updating the look to reflect a more current sensibility.  So, maybe my mom was just ahead of her time when she forced me to rock one back in the early 90’s.  In which case, let me be the first to announce the return of Starter jackets.

Or not.
