I know I’ve posted something, somewhere on Billy Kidd, but his work on Dripbook never ceases to amaze me.

I particularly love the styling and concepts in hairstylist Christopher Naselli’s work:

Out here in L.A. heads are convinced that they dictate trends, this is not exclusive to any particular genre, and hip hop fashion is very much included in this dogmatism. Little do they know that pretty much everything over here is a watered down version of what NYC has been doing for months, if not years. Take for one this “west coast” fashion trend of skinny jeans and familiar fluorescent 80’s retro. While the New Boyz are getting caked out via their hit single “you’re a jerk”, that is much ado about the aesthetics of the group rather than the content, over in NYC The Galaxy Riders aka The Alien Crew done did that image in ‘06. Mind you TGR are not rappers, though your average white guy on the street wouldn’t be able to make that distinction. What they are is a fashion collective that is heavily influenced by two things: retro hip hop and New York City. Peep the video by Current News on their latest intergalactic escapades, and peep the ill photo shoot I came across in Dripbook of the the two main members of ‘Riders posing with the illest backdrop possible, New York au naturale.

This partnership will offer buyers of creative content new sources of material and offer image-makers worldwide new opportunities to market their work.

WIN-Initiative already boasts a sought-after collection of contemporary and culture-specific images 15,000 strong, but seeks to further expand their content and talent pool. Dripbook, with its proprietary, searchable worldwide index of top creative talent, will increase WIN-Initiative’s available talent pool with even more outstanding imagery. The two companies are united by their commitment to provide a platform for today’s groundbreaking modern image-makers.

“The Dripbook talent is high-caliber,” says photographer and WIN-Initiative founder Hans Neleman. “The joint venture will produce the next creative wave of independent tastemakers, professionally and artistically.” he adds.

“In this case, two dedicated, small companies understand when it’s better to collaborate than to compete; in that way, we can better equip ourselves to provide new services to new markets,” says Alex Wright, creative director of Dripbook. For Dripbook, its image-makers now have access to a new venue for Rights Managed image sales. Clients and buyers, most importantly, will have access to an ever-increasing amount of creative-based stock imagery.

Neleman, in explaining the exclusive union states, “This collaboration is more then a fleeting trend. Both companies recognize the enhanced strategic benefits and there are advantages for the industry as well.”

Neleman is quick to point out that the quality of work from Dripbook and WIN-Initiative will help raise the bar for Rights Managed photography and provide a new and unique place for art buyers and industry creatives to find work that may not traditionally be considered stock photography. Judging by the work WIN and Dripbook display online, they will certainly be catering to a new niche in the market.

Dripbook creatives now have the option to license their work through WIN-Initiative, who is also a partner with Getty and Corbis.

To celebrate the teaming-up, both companies will be having a launch party on October 1st, 2009 in Williamsburg’s K&M Bar, from 7—9pm. All are invited to attend.

d) Die Bestätigung, dass meine Bewerbung bei der HTWK angekommen ist kam heute.

e) Ich freu mich auf Samstag aber heute möchte ich nur den Tag genießen und nichts machen.

Ein durchaus beschissener Tag und hierfür die Gründe:

a) Ein Mensch der einem eigentlich wichtig ist wirft die Freundschaft einfach weg. Mh, sehr schade.

b) Feierliche Zeugnisausgabe in der Kirche und das Fazit, dass man einige Menschen dort nicht wiedersehen wird, weil nun ein neuer Abschnitt beginnt.

c) Ich bin böse zu M., obwohl er es gar nicht verdient hat. M. ist wunderbar.  ♥ wunderwunderwunderwunderbar.

d) Fliegensturm auf dem Weg zum Bahnhof. Kennt ihr diese Minifliegen? Davon wurde ich attackiert. Aber nicht nur von einer sondern von einem Schwarm. Quasi Millionen von den Viechern.

e) Zug 5 Minuten Verspätung. Lilly ist 10 Minuten nicht mehr am Treffpunkt.

f) Die bittere Tatsache, dass wohl erst in 2 Stunden der nächste Zug am Bahnhof abfahren wird. (So, dies war nun der 1. Punkt wo ich echt hätte heulen können.)

g) Durch die Kälte hab ich nun endgültig Schnupfen und fühle mich miserabel. Danke auch.

h) Der Junge in der Bahn der mich permanent angeguckt hat – aber nicht angesprochen hat! (Das hätte meinem Ego heute echt gut getan. Mensch Junge.)

i) Fashionweek klappt nicht. Sehr bitter.

So meine Lieben – die Vintageshop-Tour für nächste Woche ist geplant. Sarah und ich werden mal testen was Leipzig da so zu bieten hat. Skepsis ist mein zweiter Vorname und ich glaube, dass ich danach erstmal enttäuscht sein werde. Aber egal.

Morgen geht es dann mal wieder ausgiebig shoppen zu Zara, wobei ich mir ein Limit gesetzt habe und dieses versuche nicht zu überschreiten. Anziehen werde ich trotzdem erstmal was mir in die Hände fällt und dann wird entschieden. ♥

if you do not have an official web site that presents your portfolio, or such as ipek and me, if you own a site but have not designed it yet (urbanrabbithole), it is really hard to find an online portfolio site which you think will satisfy your needs. i’ve been looking for the most efficient site all over the web, since I am so bad at surfing on the net it was an awful experience for me.

be careful when you apply because it is like an exam since you can not just apply and have an account, they let you in if you’re enough sufficient according to their criterias; moreover, as soon as you get in, you understand that you have to pay for them to publish your portfolio. anyway, I have not uploaded anything yet but there it comes; my online portfolio.

We were excited to be featured this month on Dripbook.

Dripbook promotes professional visual artists worldwide – photographers, illustrators, graphic designers, fashion stylists, and more. Hello Designers was featured for their web and print communication work with Crate and Barrel and Paper Source.  Also featured was photographer Nicoline Patricia Malina and Italian illustrator Mario Sughi. 

Originally hailing from Surabaya, Indonesia, Nicoline has been working in Amsterdam, Antwerp and Paris while studying in Utrecht.  Nicoline’s client list includes magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, ELLE, Amica, Maxim and advertising clients such as Ponds, Lux and Young Designer United Amsterdam.

Mario Sughi is an Italian Illustrator based in Dublin combines subtle humorous elements with a consistent loose artistic style that’s reminiscent of English Pop artist David Hockney. His clients include Stern (Germany),The Dubliner (Ireland) and Nissan (Europe).

Sometimes, when I’m listening to tunes, perusing Lookbook or Refinery29, all I can think is really.. do you all have to look so sad? (Well, that, and “Damn. Eat something.”) I think it explains why I’ve been so drawn to simple landscapes and such lately. Well, that and I never envy a landscape their Loubs. But I digress. Renee Lowe on Dripbook. Salve for your sad fashion burns.

In other news: as predicted, the increased pressure to perform academically has led to a complete personal breakdown. I spend 2 hours in the library yesterday doing “research” and made one very small librarian very scared of me when my print jobs got lost. As a result I felt “hopeless” and “gave up”. See: bought a pack of smokes, a coffee, and came home to dance it off in my living room. However, it did turn into such a wonderful night with Jared – we sat in our super sunny spare room and watched Charlie Chaplin’s “Modern Times” (one of my favorite films), then picked out a recipe to make from Real Simple for dinner. Walked to the grocery store and got another coffee and a nice bottle of white wine (not usually my bevy of choice but it was in the recipe) and returned home to make dinner and listen to (in this order) Iron and Wine, The Rolling Stones, James Brown, Fleetwood Mac and the “I’m Not There” album on the record player.

Then, what did these two intrepid young, stylish people do? Why we drank an entire bottle of wine while playing backgammon at the kitchen table. I have such fond memories of backgammon – I spent hours and hours playing with an old boss of mine, up in the middle of nowhere (or, around Meander River) in the middle of the summer. So I taught Jared. And he schooled me.

See? Academic crisis averted with board games and booze. Or, if that gets ya down, check out my beautiful flowers. Ta da. I’m a virtual pantheon of panaceas for modern malaise. Art, booze, and barring that – flowers. You’re welcome!

Nicole Franzen is someone I just ran across, looking for beautiful photographs. The 23 year old New York based photographer shows great promise in her field and shouldn’t be ignored.

I’m really into Abigail Pope. She’s a young photographer from New York City who, it seems, spends a lot of time in Latin America.

What I love about her work is her ability to bring her viewers in with her ability to compose not only with the placement of objects, but with the use (or nonuse) of color. 

And for a woman who brings powerful photographs, she’s also a filmmaker:

Now that’s a woman with talent and insight.

In “BKNY”, photographer Alex Wright gathers three years of photographs chronicling the throb of Brooklyn, NYC. The entire series is merciless, representing well why I prefer East Coast concrete over West Coast sand. 

Mr. Wright is also the co-founder of DRIPBOOK, one of my new favorite spots on the web.

C’est en voyant de tels sites que je me dis que la technologie, ça a franchement du bon. Dripbook c’est en un clic un portfolio de milliers d’artistes du monde entier. L’occasion de laisser voguer son regard, de cliquer sur une image qui nous interpelle, et parfois de tomber sur des artistes qui valent le coup (ou le clic).

Le principe : soit on recherche quelque chose de précis, avec un thème particulier. Soit on se laisser capter par une photo ou une image, on tombe sur un artiste au hasard, et on peut feuilleter ses books…

Pour ma part, je suis tombée en quelques clics sur le profil de Julie Williams, une artiste américaine originaire de Brooklyn, à la fois styliste, photographe et qui réalise de nombreux collages. Je suis tombée sous le charme de ses books notamment “She said she said”.

I’m updating this blog post after a few e-mails with Dripbook. They are a group of people trying very hard to make an excellent service. Most of my reasons for writing this post could have been dealt with better communication on their website. I suppose that’s been done by now.

Photographers, illustrators, hair stylists etc are typically a little crap at keeping their websites maintained, if they exist at all. I appreciate any efforts to help these busy creative people show their work to the world. Dripbook is one of those efforts. I found out about them through a comment in one of the Virb art groups and Mashable have written about them too. I’ll check anything out and it seemed like a good project. Easy portfolio tools combined with a social network aspect to help you connect and promote. So I sent them an application. I had to apply because… they’re pulling the exclusivity card as a marketing stunt really. I said I’m handsome and make nice work and sent them my portfolio site (ironically). Thank goodness I was let in or my street cred would have collapsed like an underfed model. The feature I wanted to explore was their ability to publish to third party sites. Widgets that create a bit of code that refers to your dynamically updated portfolio instead of you having to create the books on your own site. I use viewbook.com for a site I built for a photographer which does that exactly. Unfortunately I never did get to trying that feature.

Most of Dripbook is fine even if it’s a bit dull in the design stakes (a web 2.0 phenomenon apparently). The upload of images was easy enough, the networking idea is a good one. After I uploaded I found that my images came out looking soft. Which is odd considering they were sized down for web use and were sharp, black and white images when they left my desktop. Even that I could figure out given enough patience. My irritation is that the site is not recognizing that I have “published” a book of drawings. It says it’s published. But it’s not visible to anyone else it seems. I’ve tried every “publish” button three times and now I’m bored. If you can’t publish, you can’t promote and then the social network is useless.

Turns out that because I put a “Mature” marker on my book because it contained drawn nudity, I encountered a legal fix:

You followed the instructions exactly and did exactly what you were supposed to do. When a user goes to look at your book, he / she is asked whether he / she wants to look at mature content. Then a cookie is places on that user’s computer, and the warning does not show up again.

 A fact that would have been good to know a few days ago.

Not wanting to spend any more time on the site I figured that I’d cancel my hard won account and focus my efforts on other tasks, like my real job. Except I can’t find anywhere to cancel, suspend, deactivate, kill my account. Really. I’ve looked pretty hard. The FAQ neatly ignores the fact that anyone would be brazen enough to leave their services. I wonder what happens when you buy a premium account ($9 per month)?

Dripbook have informed me that they hadn’t got to that detail yet.  It’ll be done now.

Dripbook is in Beta phase which may excuse any screw ups and my decision to leave their site is based on a few personal impressions, not only some basic technical glitches. The site is slow, I don’t like their presentation options and I don’t like their design.

I‘d leave, but I can’t.

ps. Turns out that no one had ever asked to leave. I have that dubious honour. My apologies, Dripbook, for being that guy.

 I have been deleted. After the short e-mail chat with Dripbook I appreciate that I was rather harsh on their Beta site. I only wish they had been a bit more forthcoming with how Beta they were. I mean, who doesn’t have a delete account button?  If you think I was a putz let the comments fly.
