Para tener el driver siempre actualizado sólo hay que agregar un respositorio de Launchpad.

Abrimos una terminal y escribimos.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nvidia-vdpau/ppa

Ahora actualizamos el sistema y listo.

sudo aptitude update

We will be closed on Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2009 to allow our employees time to be with their families. We will resume the Drivers Wellness blog on Monday, November 30, 2009.

Happy Thanksgiving

The holidays are approaching. Everywhere I go, I see decorations going up. When I was a kid learning about the holidays at school, we heard stories about the hardships the Pilgrims endured the first winter in America. They survived because of the compassion of Native Americans who taught them to plant corn and celebrated the harvest with a Thanksgiving feast.

In this down economy, with drivers losing jobs and trucking firms closing up sometimes it’s easier to complain. However, I have not seen a mass exodus of people leaving this country to go somewhere better. This is still a pretty good place to live. Find time to appreciate what we have and the bounty of provision given to us this Thanksgiving. Comment here.

Or maybe just one truth with two kinds: To bike in Los Angeles requires dealing with cars. There are two kinds:

The first are the ones who don’t see you. They might be the ones talking on a cell phone, yelling at their kids, tuning their radio, late leaving work and looking to roll a couple stop signs on the side streets because all the arterials are clogged. They might be the ones who nearly right hook you because they can’t be bothered to look over the shoulder. I get mad about these people, but I don’t stay mad. There’s no point, because I realize that it’s not really about me. These drivers are the ones who merge without looking on the freeway, who get stuck in the intersection going the wrong way at red lights. They’re the self-centered ones who treat the rest of the road like so many video game dots and numbers. Out there, but not really enough to worry about. They’re fat and happy in their steel cocoons, coddled in roll cages and crumple zones like so many eggs in cardboard cartons. When they cut me off, I know it’s not about me.

It’s the second group that piss me off. It’s the second group that sees me pushing it down Westholme, heading south through the last roundabout before swinging left at Santa Monica, riding to catch the green light. It’s the second group with the driver’s side window of their white sedan rolled down and the driver peering through his thin glasses up the road to where I’m bearing down and still thinking it’s a good idea to swing out into traffic because he doesn’t want to get stuck waiting for the cars that are trailing me. It’s the second group of drivers who see me brake, pull up, raise my hands to ask what the fuck, then gun their engine through the light because they know they’re in the wrong and think they can leave me in the dust. It’s these second kind of drivers who think that just because I’m a little fucking cyclist on a dark single-speed that that makes it OK. And do you know what? It’s those second group of drivers who sit in their car waiting to turn right onto Beverly Glen at the red light, one arm dangling a lit cigarette out the window as I pull up to the intersection, then see me roll up to the light beside them.

The moral of the story? Your shit catches up to you.

Ride safe.

I once heard a speaker explain why so many have marital difficulties. He stated that somewhere within the marriage there was a lack of love on the husband’s part or a lack of respect on the wife’s part. This started a vicious cycle that we can’t break out of. You see, without love, a wife’s reaction to her husband will be lacking in respect. And when a husband gets treated without respect, he will react without love to his wife. See the cycle? Stop it! Become proactive and respond to your mate with what they need. Try it. It works well. Comment here.

A few days ago I read an article on bribery by one famous writer. Then it got me wondering to the times when I was younger and flouted a few traffic rules.

I have always loved to drive fast and still do. I even wanted to be a race car driver when I was younger. But of course, it did not materialise because my studies took precedence.

Being the daredevil, you can imagine how fast I had driven when I got my hands on my first set of wheels. Many a times it was a near miss for me. But God has preserved my life all these while.

I remember overtaking vehicles dangerously and speeding, among others. I can’t recall the number of summonses I had gotten those days, either for speeding or overtaking at double lines and it did not occur to me to offer any bribes at all. All I knew was I had to pay the fine. And I am really glad that I did.

Today I am not that fast and furious anymore. Age is catching up, I guess and I have learnt to value my life. Of course at times, when I’m travelling home from out station, I do exceed the stipulated speed limit because I want to arrive home earlier. But that does not make it right, I was still flouting the traffic rules.

I have mellowed a lot when I compare myself to those days. I try my best to follow the speed limit, not to overtake dangerously and not to tailgate other drivers but it’s very difficult at times. ;-P

ANSWER:

Companies can establish the time frame for turning in log sheets as long as it is within the period of time set my D.O.T.

============

Hours-of-Service Regulations

The Hours-of-Service regulations (49 CFR Part 395) put limits in place for when and how long commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers may drive. These regulations are based on an exhaustive scientific review and are designed to ensure truck drivers get the necessary rest to perform safe operations. FMCSA also reviewed existing fatigue research and worked with organizations like the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies and the National Institute for Occupational Safety in setting these HOS rules.

Specific Regulation:

§395.8 Driver’s record of duty status.

(a) Except for a private motor carrier of passengers (nonbusiness), every motor carrier shall require every driver used by the motor carrier to record his/her duty status for each 24 hour period using the methods prescribed in either paragraphs (a)(1) or (2) of this section.

(d) The following information must be included on the form in addition to the grid:

(d)(1) Date;

(d)(2) Total miles driving today;

(d)(3) Truck or tractor and trailer number;

(d)(4) Name of carrier;

(d)(5) Driver’s signature/certification;

(d)(6) 24-hour period starting time (e.g., midnight, 9:00 a.m., noon, 3:00 p.m.);

(d)(7) Main office address;

(d)(8) Remarks;

(d)(10) Total hours (far right edge of grid); and

(d)(11) Shipping document number(s), or name of shipper and commodity.

(e) Failure to complete the record of duty activities of this section or §395.15, failure to preserve a record of such duty activities, or making of false reports in connection with such duty activities shall make the driver and/or the carrier liable to prosecution.

(k)(2) The driver shall retain a copy of each record of duty status for the previous 7 consecutive days which shall be in his/her possession and available for inspection while on duty.

(i) Filing driver’s record of duty status. The driver shall submit or forward by mail the original driver’s record of duty status to the regular employing motor carrier within 13 days following the completion of the form.

======== Example for a company Fleet Safety Program ========

Long Distance Drivers

· Drivers of routes beyond 150 air miles from departure point [plant] are required to maintain Hour of Service Logs (HOS) , keeping their copy and submitting the original at the designated plant location.

· Company management ensures that drivers submit logs that are true and accurate comparing log entries to other documents (toll tickets, fuel receipts, roadside inspections, etc.) for time, date and location agreement is suggested for determining log entry accuracy

· Failure to keep the logbook current to the last change in duty status is not only a violation, it is a major cause of false log entries.

· IMPORTANT: False entries on a driver’s duty status record are considered to be serious violations of the HOS regulations.

· Provides originals of HOS Log no later than one week from log entry*

Apple (s aapl) unveiled its Mighty Mouse replacement, the Magic Mouse, last month alongside new versions of the iMac, Mac mini and entry-level Macbook. The mouse was well-received, perhaps due in part to the disappointment most felt about its predecessor. Better tracking and touch gestures combined to deliver a much better experience overall.

But only for Mac users, since unlike the Mighty Mouse before it, the Magic Mouse didn’t ship with any Windows support, so brand traitors were simply out of luck. Now, a Windows driver for the Magic Mouse has surfaced, so the PC faithful can see what all the buzz is about.

The software release isn’t an official one, so proceed at your own risk. What happened was that someone, via a nice little bit of technical conjuring, freed a 32-bit and 64-bit version of the Magic Mouse driver from Apple’s recent Boot Camp update using an unrar tool. So it’s software, just not officially released software.

The source of the drivers hopefully indicates that Apple is planning on officially releasing support for the the Magic Mouse’s multitouch features somewhere in the near future, so if you’re at all wary about trying these hacked versions out, you may not have long to wait. After all, Windows still accounts for 96 percent of the computing market share, so Apple is foregoing a lot of potential revenue in not offering PC support.

You can grab the drivers from Uneasy Silence, but the link for the 64-bit version is broken as of this writing. The 32-bit version downloads fine, though, as a Windows executable. I haven’t yet had a chance to try this out with my Magic Mouse, but if you have, let us know how it worked out in the comments.

Snow falls to the fire escape below. The rusted black bars become achromatic and plain, the complications of the cities many faces simplify if only for this moment. Edward takes a deep sip of his coffee, lets the air from his nostrils shoot downwards into the obsidian liquid below, the steam rolling upwards, fogging his glasses.

He watches as the squirrels emerge, bound across the Brooklyn rooftops in search of food, the out-of-place seagulls roaming overhead, far from their home at Brighton Beach, thinks of his childhood home which now exists only within his head.

The nostalgia for a simplicity that he knows never existed at times overwhelms him, thinks of the many days of roaming the hills around his home, the plainness, clean-lines, the innocence. Summer days and cool, foggy afternoons the regulated tempo of his younger years, he would traverse the golden grasses, the wind-swept Spanish moss hanging from the heavy branches of the oaks, the miner’s leaf lettuce patches that stretched for as far as the eye could see. The algae-covered pond, the weeping willow on its banks, the tadpoles and mosquito fish and the water bugs. The currencies of his remembered pasts abound and he exchanges them for moments of solace on cold days like these, far from home in the outer reaches of the city that never sleeps.

Someone has stopped in the middle of the street outside, the cars line up behind and frustrated drivers honk their horns with fury. The snow deadens the abrasive nature of their releases, he remembers as a young child playing with his sister on the highway that ran next to their house on a Sunday. That was before it became a major highway, still remained classified as a scenic route. Edward remembers his grandfather and father, father and son, in worn Levi jeans sitting on the alabaster fence watching them play. It was a summer day, the feint smell of tar from the hot asphalt, crisp, dry grasses, and the stillness of a mid-afternoon, the dry heat abounded. These things were etched into his memory forever and he knew that what he sought in life, more than happiness or contentment, was a return to this mythical past. He thinks of many of the mythical pasts we peg our contentedness, our senses of self-worth, our desires, our pains to and watches as the sparrows huddle against each other in the ever-increasing winter winds.

He knows that the memories he dredges up from his past are probably far different from what actually happened, that the contexts are lost, the full range of senses that accompanied each of his actions. His pasts become present through this yanking up and through time of these temporal moments that he commits. Today though, whether past or present, these moments offer condolement against the discord that erupts from the gritty, snow-covered streets of Brooklyn below and he sits, coffee in hand, as a being of remembered pasts.

Although these terms are written with the transport industry in mind, they are highly relevant and applicable for other industries as well.

Minimum continuous break in a 24 hour period for a solo driver: 7 hours in the Standard Hours option, 7 hour continuous break or 8 hours in 2 parts (islimited) in the Basic Fatigue Management option, 6 hour continuous break or 8 hours in 2 parts (subject to conditions).

Night sleep: At least seven hours continuous rest between 10pm and 8am.

Shift: The period of driving and work time between two periods of continuous sleep opportunity. A shift is deemed to have started at the end of the last continuous sleep opportunity and finishes at the beginning of the next continuous sleep opportunity.

Short rest break: Any rest break that is 15 minutes or more in duration, but less than seven hours. Means time at work provided for rest and meals after a continuous period of active work and does not include non-driving work time or time not working. Short rest is recorded in minimum 15 minute periods (i.e. any non-work less than 15 minutes does not counttowards rest, any period of non-work of 15 minutes but less than 30 minutes is counted as 15 minutes rest etc.).

Night work: Any driving or work undertaken between midnight and 6 am.

Hazard: A source or situation with a potential to cause injury, illness or disease.

Hazard identification: Process of recognising that a hazard exists.

Risk: The likelihood of an injury, illness or disease occurring and the severity of any injury, illness
or disease that results from exposure to a hazard.

Risk assessment: Process of working out how big a risk is present and what risk factors are causing the problem.

Risk control: The process of applying appropriate prevention measures to eliminate or minimise any
risks.

Circadian rhythm: Circadian rhythms or the body clock regulates physiological and behavioural functions on a 24 hour basis. Sleep and wakefulness are programmed and sleepiness is greatest between midnight to 6 a.m. and to a lesser extent between 2-4 p.m.

Fatigue: Fatigue can be described as a progressive loss of alertness that ultimately ends in sleep.

Sleep debt: Failure to have a normal sleep results in sleep debt that accumulates and can only be paid back by undisturbed, restorative sleep.

Schedule: The pattern of driving and work covering one or more trips. For operators with rostered drivers a schedule might operate over a week or a month. For less regular or predictable situations a schedule may refer to a single trip.

Hey Windows users: what would you risk for a mouse of such mystical persuasions that it has the word “magic” right in the product name? How about $69 for the mouse followed by a few sleepless nights after installing a .exe found in the murky shallows of the internet? That’s what it’ll take to install some hacked drivers, said to enable Apple’s Magic Mouse gestures, on your Windows rig. The drivers were extracted from the latest Bluetooth update targeting Mac owners running Windows under Boot Camp, but now there’s nothing stopping you from trying them too. Let us know how this dark elixir works out in the comments below.

In a matter of weeks, the driver market has upended itself. The world champion has left his team and joined the 2008 world champion. The 2007 world champion is out of racing, his spot taken by the 2005-2006 world champion. A seven-time world champion is thinking of returning to the grid.

Got it?

No one was surprised when two-time world champion Fernando Alonso was announced at Ferrari. Then, with Kimi Raikkonen seemingly ousted from the scuderia and Toyota announcing its withdrawal from the sport, Jenson Button landed at McLaren. This earth-shattering news came just weeks after Button won the 2009 title for Brawn.

My head is beginning to hurt.

At first blush, Button’s move seems hard to explain. Brawn had thrown him a lifeline after Honda pulled the plug on its adventure in team ownership. Brawn cleverly exploited the regulations in creating a double-diffuser that placed its car at the sharp end, landing Button his first world championship and a second consecutive British champion.

Button predictably increased his salary demands. Brawn should have seen this coming, and to not have recognized Button’s increased worth was a mistake. Perhaps Brawn thought Button would stay out of loyalty. A quick glance at some of Button’s career moves suggests that he is less than reliable when it comes to cashing in on a promise.

My theory is that Button sensed a resurgent McLaren at the end of the year, once the other teams had caught up to Brawn and Red Bull’s “unfair advantage”. We saw the title contenders close in on Button at the end of the year. Possibly, Button calculated that Brawn would never meet his salary demands, whereas McLaren was happy to shell out for two British champions . Button’s move is characteristic of his career trajectory, similar to his on-again, off-again move to Williams several years ago.

Raikonnen’s disappearance from the grid next season is hard to explain, although rumors are floating that he will replace Button at the newly rebranded Mercedes F1 team, the three-pointed star having bought Brawn (and presumably thinking Button as well), being shocked to find out that longtime “partner” Ron Dennis had just bought Button for McLaren. I saw that as a nice “f– you” to Norbert Haug for buying Brawn, and a middle finger firmly directed at Ross for sorting out the double diffuser first.

Now Eddie Jordan, of all people, is saying that Mercedes is in negotiations to sign Michael Schumacher. The Schumacher-Raikonnen pairing was a near-miss when Michael retired, but it’s obvious from his aborted comeback of earlier this year that the fire burns. Remember that his comeback was stopped cold by a neck injury. This could be a pairing for the ages, or a disaster for either driver.

I questioned this story but wondered why Eddie Jordan would put it out without having some sense of the facts. Eddie’s been known to stretch the truth (in fact, one might argue that’s what got him in to F1), but this is a big chunk of gossip to throw out there without a firm belief in its truth. Eddie still likes his credibility.

It has all the makings for an incredible 2010. Alonso in a Ferrari is mouth-watering. With a decent car, Alonso could easily win his third title and bring the championship home to Maranello next season. Notice I don’t mention Felipe; I’m sorry but his injuries are too severe for him to be the same driver who nearly won the title in 2008. Michael in a Mercedes, alongside Raikonnen, is the matchup we all waited for when Kimi went to Maranello. And two world champions in silver cars, rising above it all.

Last week I ranted on about Google’s Chrome browser hanging my laptop and after non-use of Chr

Last week I ranted on about Google’s Chrome browser hanging my laptop and after non-use of Chrome the problem went away. Well, it seems that I had spoken too soon. The very next day my laptop hung again, and I had not used Chrome since before I wrote the blog post.

So, frustrated with the hanging, I did a little more digging and found out that there was a known problem with one of Microsoft’s Windows updates, MS09-065 (969947), which caused hanging of the OS (with mouse movement still working) for users with Nvidia and ATI video cards. Now, I know, it’s an XP problem but the update applies to Vista as well so I thought it might be exhibiting the same problems with Vista so I removed that update as well as the Nvidia driver update and re-applied the Nvidia driver update again.

It was a short-lived experience, as the problem returned.

So, I gave in and restored my laptop back to it’s clean, factory-install version of Vista and began rebuilding it again. Many, many long hours later and about 1.7GB of various windows updates later, it seems I have a usable laptop once again.

And yes, this post is being written and posted using Google Chrome, again my browser of choice!

Despite the not so impressive first half of the season, it seems the Formula 1 world have recognised

Despite the not so impressive first half of the season, it seems the Formula 1 world have recognised that the car was to blame and not Lewis Hamilton. This was evident in the second half of the season when improvements to his McLaren MP4-24 saw Hamilton back on top again, twice, in Hungary and Singapore, and competing for the top spot in most other races.

Hamilton thanks his car for victory in Hungary

Lewis Hamilton has been voted the number 1 Formula 1 driver of 2009 by not one, but two of the most prestigious publications in motorpsort.

Autosport
Arguably the number 1 motorsports magazine in the world has a 2009 Formula 1 season review issue out at the moment which rates the top 10 drivers of 2009. At number 1 is Lewis Hamilton. The 9 drivers below him were rated as follows:

2 – Jenson Button
3 – Sebastian Vettel
4 – Mark Weber
5 – Robert Kubica
6 – Fernando Alonso
7 – Felipe Massa
8 – Kimi Raikkonen
9 – Rubens Barrichello
10 – Nico Rosberg

Very interesting top ten indeed – I’ll be picking up my copy tomorrow to see what justification there is for Barrichello being in only 9th place. Sure he didn’t do as well as team mate Button but he did his part to ensure Brawn GP won the constructors championship and towards the end of the season he was a better driver than Button himself. Also, Kubica in 5th – was that based on Brazil alone?

You can flick through a tiny version od the current issue over at Autosport.com

GP Week
If you didn’t know already, GP Week is a free, yes FREE, online publication with excellent written content and superb photos. They have rated the top 5 Formula 1 drivers of 2009, and like Autosport have Lewis Hamilton taking the number 1 spot. The other 5 are as follows:

2 – Sebastian Vettel
3 – Jenson Button
4 – Mark Weber / Rubens Barrichello
5 – Sebastian Buemi

The first thing you’ll notice is the inclusion of 2 drivers at #4 – there’s your top 5 there guys, but I will let you off as the extra driver is Buemi who performed very well considering his absolute dog of a car. Interesting to see they rate Rubens Barrichello a lot higher than Autosport, and rightly so in my mind.

So, anyone agree or disagree with the two sets of rankings?
