After obtaining Barbara’s phone number from Alisa, and also learning her last name, I was ready to roll. I knew that she was on the basketball team so I waited until later that evening to call her. Once on the phone we talked seamlessly for hours before she politely ended our conversation to go to sleep.

Since it was a Wednesday we agreed to go out on our first date that Saturday night with me doing all the planning for the evening’s events. I figured I’d plan an active date where we could get to know one another while doing something instead of just sitting at opposite ends of a table interviewing each other.

So, on Saturday night I picked her up in my mom’s Dodge Caravan and drove us to the Skokie Park District Driving Range. Barbara wore a simple cardigan over a tank top and seemed nervous at the onset of the date, so I did my best to keep the conversation moving by asking her a lot of questions.

After hitting several hundred golf balls I could tell that Barbara was acting more like herself so I suggested that we leave and grab something to eat. Since I had pre-selected a place there was no delay or arguing about where to go. So, I drove us about fifteen minutes to one of my favorite restaurants in the entire world, Buff Joe’s in Evanston.

Since Barbara had never been there before she let me order a double bbq wing and two cheddar chips (waffle fries covered in cheddar cheese) for the two of us. I knew this wasn’t the most figure friendly meal but I thought it would keep things casual and interesting.

However, I had one more trick up my sleeve, and just for fun I dared her to eat the sauce-covered wings and cheese coated fries without any napkins. Now, if I were to take a girl out for that exact same meal tomorrow I probably wouldn’t get the same reaction that I got from Barbara when we were in high school, but G-d bless her she ate that entire meal without using a single napkin.

After Buff Joe’s I drove her home and before she left the car I asked for another date. She replied that we could go out the following weekend, and at that moment I considered moving in for a kiss, but didn’t. Something deep inside was telling me that Barbara was special and that I should take things slow.

However, something that my subconscious didn’t indicate to me that night was that I was on the verge of entering into a new phase in my life; A phase that would last for seven years and include Barbara as its most significant and influential character.

Or in this case I heard them. I work for a golf and country club outside Atlanta. Or as one of the residents likes to say, it’s not so much a country club as it is a club in the country. Now I am by NO means saying country people are stupid. I am definitely a country girl, born and raised and I am not stupid. Ok, maybe that’s up for debate sometimes.

This particular country club is closed on Mondays unless it’s a holiday or unless they are having a special tournament, which does not happen often. The fact that it is closed on Mondays is published in their newsletter that is sent to every household. It is also published on the website, posted on the board outside the club AND on the message when you call the club. I DO work on Mondays because I work in the office and it’s typically easier when no one is there and I can get a LOT more done when I don’t get a lot of interruptions. It is usually just me and the maintenance guy. Last Monday (a week ago) was the Monday after our biggest snow in like 5 years. Granted it was only like a half an inch but for us that’s a LOT . . . AND the ground was still covered with snow and ice, as was the golf course. A lot of the course was also covered with plastic sheeting to protect the grounds. And most of the roads out there still had lots of places that the ice was still completely across the road. On top of that we were closed (and this had also been published) for two weeks for renovations.

So, Monday afternoon I’m in my office and the phone rings (you have to listen to a recording and choose whether you want the Golf Shop and tee times or the office, etc), so, I answer the phone and this resident says “ I’ve been trying to call the Golf Shop all day and they aren’t answering”.

Me: Yes, sir. They are closed. It’s Monday.

Man: Oh, so I can’t come play golf?

Me: No, sir. The course is closed. We are always closed on Mondays.

Man: So, you’re saying I can’t come and play?

Me: No sir. It’s Monday.

Man: Well, are they gonna open later today?

Me: No sir. I believe it’s still gonna be Monday later today. Besides it’s like 15 degrees outside and the course is covered in ice.

Man: So… is the Driving Range open?

What I wanted to say was… “Sir, can you please hold while I get a pen to take down your email address so I can send you your sign?”

WOW… I really didn’t think he needed a response. I don’t think he would have heard me anyway since he obviously wasn’t listening.

Certain things are predictable, like the machine that dispenses range balls at Milham Park Golf Co

Certain things are predictable, like the machine that dispenses range balls at Milham Park Golf Course.

You grab a green plastic bucket from the stack, set your bucket in the opening at the bottom of the machine, place your jagged token in a lever that resembles one you might find at an arcade, and push. The machine rumbles for a few seconds and then — VOILA! – 50 mangy yellow golf balls fall into your bucket. It’s simple. Anticipated. A foregone conclusion.

The range was particularly busy one day a few summers ago, so a line had formed at the ball machine. You know how it is when you’re in line for something you’ve done a thousand times? Like at the grocery store. You’re paying attention, but not really because the result is always the same: cashier scans your items, bags them, you pay, you leave.

So I was in line at the driving range, my mind on auto-pilot, when the guy at the front of the line did this: grabbed a basket off the stack, placed his token on the lever, studied the machine for a second . . . and then hung the basket on the lever and pushed. Golf balls flooded the parking lot, which also happens to slope away from the machine.

Poor guy.

Anyway, my point is, watching the third period of last night’s Western Michigan-Bemidji State hockey game was a lot like watching the Running of the Driving Range Balls in the sense that the ending – a 1-0 WMU shootout victory — was entirely unexpected.

If you’ve watched WMU hockey for a while, you’re probably like me (cynical) when the Broncos enter the third period in a scoreless tie with the nation’s 10th-ranked team, as was the case last night. Much like standing in line at the driving range or grocery store, you watch the Broncos with your mind on auto-pilot because you’re sure of the result. You’re certain every failure to get the puck deep; every neutral-zone turnover; every over-commitment by a defender; every shot or centering pass by the opponent; every penalty will be the trigger that detonates a goal for their opponents.

But not last night.

Last night, the Broncos didn’t break. Last night, they were smart with the puck. Last night, they matched a superior team’s speed and skill. Last night, Riley Gill, their goaltender, was terrific with a big glove stop midway through the third period and a pair of forward-facing snow angel stops in the shootout.

Last night, the balls bounced all over the parking lot.

Good for the Broncos. They deserved to win that game.

A few other observations…

* That was the quickest third period I’ve watched in a long time. I got back into town and over to the rink just as the period started and my ass hadn’t even felt the chill of the first-row bleachers before I looked up and saw 5:29 left on the clock. It was brisk, intense, entertaining and just plain well-played hockey. I think there were only five (or so) whistles the entire time. Love it.

* If WMU’s forwards were gathered together in a room of which I had command, I would write the following on the whiteboard, cap the pen, flip it over my shoulder and walk out: WHEN IT’S LATE IN THE THIRD PERIOD AND THE GAME IS TIED, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD STOP STICK-HANDLING THE PUCK AT THE BLUE LINE AND GET IT DEEP.

* Max Campbell apparently refuses to go into the corners or play the puck hard, but his nifty move in the shootout should be recognized. It should also be recognized that this skill alone will not be enough for him to ever see the light of day with the New York Rangers, who own his draft rights.

* Finally — and I mean this with all due respect (seriously) — what sorts of instructions could Jim Culhane possibly be yelling at his players when they are focused and swarming with the puck in the other team’s end? Can they even hear him? I witnessed it late in the third period last night. Just curious.

Anyway, Happy New Year.

Trouble at the Golf Course? By Jonathan McFall Do you find yourself struggling out on the golf cours

Trouble at the Golf Course?
By Jonathan McFall
Do you find yourself struggling out on the golf course at some of the basic things? Do you find yourself constantly doing one thing right then immediately following it with a mistake? If this is you, here a short guide with some tips to improving your golf game and how well you play.
First, I would suggest going to a simple course to play, and if you can’t play at a course find a driving range. While playing this round or hitting golf balls, try not to pay much attention to your score, while figuring out what you do right and what you do wrong. For instance, some golfers can hit the ball a mile off the tee, but once they get close to the green, everything goes to shambles. Understanding what is good and bad about your golf game, gives you areas of improvement that can be worked on.
If you are having trouble with your driver, fairway woods, or longer irons, then spend more time working on them at the driving range. Don’t just hit ball after ball on the range and not think about what is going on. Practice your swing before and after you hit a ball. Taking notice of the ball flight and how your body is while you are swinging allows you to make the changes needed to get the proper ball flight. For your driver, if you tend to pop the ball up in the air a lot, then move the ball further back in your stance. Also, making sure that your hands are not too far open or closed can help to give you a straighter ball flight. For your longer irons, moving the ball further up in your stance can help as well.
Trouble with your short game is not hard to fix either. For some of your shorter irons, moving the ball further back in your stance as your iron loft gets higher can help. Most driving ranges have a practice green with bunkers and rough surrounding them. Put a few golf balls down around the green and pick out a certain area or flag on the green. Try hit the balls as close as you can to your target while trying different types of shots, such as a flop shot or a bump and run. If you happen to be at your home, grab one of your favorite wedges and throw some golf balls on the ground. Pick out several targets in your yard and hit shots to them just as you would if you had your own practice green. The same concept can apply to putting at the practice green. Find a target hole, and put down 5-7 golf balls. Try and hit each ball as close as possible, and as a test, don’t move on to a new target until each of the balls comes within around three feet of your target.
If you are struggling with your golf game, your first step is to identify what is good about your game and what can be improved on. Once you figure out your problems on the course, actions can be taken to correct the problems. Most of the time, these problems can be corrected at the driving range if the proper attention is giving to each problem.

So in reading Jason Sobel’s “99 Reasons to be Thankful” post, one of his reasons made me think of an additional Pet Peeve I’d like to bring up. Driving Range mats! I hate that almost all of the courses near me have now copped out and gone the way of the mat. I assume it’s because it’s more cost effective and they don’t have to manage a huge tee box and constantly seed it?

They just suck. They are bad for your clubs, and your swing I think. Ever hit a shot a little fat on a mat? It can send shockwaves up your wrist and forearm. I thought I broke my wrist one time! Nevermind that green crap that always gets left on the sole of your club and leaves you scrubbing the hell out of it to get it off.

So to all the courses out there that make people hit off driving range mats, here’s a tip… I can’t think of one single person that would rather hit off one of those than off grass! Charge an extra dollar per bucket if cost is the issue, I think people would rather pay than hit off of concrete covered astroturf!

It’s been a while since the last post! Mainly due to such a busy schedule the past few months.

It’s been a while since the last post! Mainly due to such a busy schedule the past few months. That’s why I want to write about golfing in the holidays.

Desire to get out, especially if your weather is not always perfect, but your plate is really full?

Couple of tricks I used to use when I was playing golf competitively and had to juggle life!! I would look at things that could not be done after 5pm or in the dark. These would be the things I would make sure I scheduled to get done, and then back to golf.

Okay, maybe that doesn’t make as much sense to you yet, as it will in a second. Take this thought, what can I do with my golf game, to keep it sharp, that I can do after 5pm (after work) or after its dark outside? Or for some of you, when it’s snowing or too cold!

You’ll be surprised. If you have a mirror and just a little bit of room to swing (slowly), your really in business. I want to remind you that swinging in front of a mirror, you can learn up to 12 times faster, do it in slow motion and increase your learning speed to 20 times faster!

So take a club, or a shaft with a grip, although I like the club so you can make sure the face remains square, and begin to do things like;

Practice your setup – bad foundations lead to compensations

Practice your posture – angles store power, and too much increases tension, which robs you of speed! Find a happy balance.

Now once you have those two down, simply do ten, thats right 10! backswings to hip height only. This will help develop a great feel and awareness what the correct take away is supposed to be like.

remember 10 = 200 if done slowly…one major key, you can watch yourself in the mirror ( if you don’t the 20 times faster does not work cuz you’re not watching) In this exercise, put the mirror to you side, so you can watch the take away off your right shoulder, or left if your left-handed.

Watching yourself do these exercises adds the number of senses and this is part of the trick to increase the learning process.

So how to practice during the holidays, without upsetting our family and friends by going to the course or the range for hours, take 10 minutes, get in front of the mirror and do a few slow motion drills, while watching and maintaining perfect posture.

Enjoy some turkey, and next time, how can we become better putters and never hit one in the hole?

Here’s a novel idea. One More Roll When you go to the local golf course to practice your golf game,

Here’s a novel idea.

One More Roll

When you go to the local golf course to practice your golf game, do something besides whacking one driver after another on the driving range!

Strange idea huh? Where’s the fun in that?

Here are 5 ideas that have helped me improve my golf game over the years.

1. Warm up and stretch thoroughly: Before you even take a club out of your bag get your muscles loose. This is very important for the more ‘age challenged’ among us. Yes, I am among that group, even if I hate to admit it!

2. Driving Range: Start out hitting a few ‘half shots’ with a low or mid iron. As you get warmed up, progress to longer clubs and full golf swings. Save your golf driver for last. I’ve found that there’s nothing like ‘missing’ a few drives when you’re still cold and stiff to mangle your confidence.

3. Pitching: Now head for the pitching & chipping area. If you have enough room, practice some mid length pitches. If not, then next time you are on the driving range, make an effort to practice some 10 yard and longer pitches.

4. Chipping: Personally I like to use a variety of clubs around the green. Obviously not all golfers agree with that. Practice unusual shots from difficult lies. It will help you later out on the golf course.

5. Putting: When it comes right down to it, this is where every golfer should spend the most time practicing their game. Forget about all the drives, approach shots and chips.

If your putting sucks, you can improve it with practice. You may not be a Ben Crenshaw with the putter, but you can teach yourself to limit the 3 putts.

A trip to Ireland

Yes I finally did it. I went to Ireland and spend a lovely weekend over there. I booked a nice BnB in Dublin for 3 days.

The BnB was located near the city centre and literally a stone throw away from some interesting places. After flying to Dublin I immediately began to unpack my stuff and get ready for some action. Fortunately I got a Dublin tour guide with some vouchers in it. You definitely have to get one. A discount on some admissons is pretty cool. so the first day I decided totake it easy and went through the city centre and made my way to the Jameson distillery. I’ve to say that I like Scottish Whisky but I had to go in there. The distillery is very easy to find and the interior is absolutely beautiful. It is actually the old distillery. You find a whisky bar, a shop and the entry to the old distillery. This is the ‘gate’ to the whisky tour I booked on. It lasts about 45 mins and ends with a whisky challenge and a complimentary glass of Jameson whisky with cranberry juice, just the whisky or mixed whisky with some water.

It really was a nice experience and I ended up buying a bootle of a special distillery reserve for a couple of euros. Well worth the money. After that I went a bit shopping – mostly CDs I should add and got some food because I was quite hungry.

Beeing back at the BnB I decided to have an early night in order to get ready for the second day. The Guinness Warehouse was on top of my list. At 8am I went down for breakfast (didn’t try a full Irish), instead I went for toast, scrambled eggs, link sausage and of course bacon. A wee portion of Weetabix and I was ready. On my way to the Warehouse I admired the beauty of this city and its stunning scenery. Believe it or not Dublin really is a nice and vibrating city.

Well arrived at the Warehouse I was stunned by the complex. Absolutely massive. So after a moment of admiration I went into the warehouse and bought my ticket. 10 euros but with a complimentary pint of freshly draught Guinness should be worth the money. Ok so where do I start? After getting through the barriers I was stunned (again) by the massive rooms. On the left you find the original Guinness store (2 storeys) and to your right all availabe Guinness bottlings of the last couple of years. As I didn’t pay too much attention I can’t tell you if these bottles were from the last 100 years or more. Anyway if you’re a tourist and you need some help with your language you can get some translators. Those small devices tell you in your language what’s what.

I queued for an English headset in believe that I would get some extra features or it was required (which it was not!). The starting point is the contract Arthur Mc Guinness signed some years ago. Again don’t ask me how old this document actually is! Then you start a journey throughout the whole process of brewing Guinness. The history is shown in picturesand videos and at some point and if you are lucky enough you actually can start a complete brew process. Pretty cool eh?

Well after you have finished the brew process levels as I call them (the warehouse is actually designed like a pint of Guinness) you can access a bar or write something on the wall. The wall basically is a wall where you can leave some messages for other people to read. I decided not to and headed straight for the top. The ultimate experience of having a nice pint of Guinness. The top bar right above Dublin is the best place to enjoy a pint of Guinness for free. You should be prepared for a massive croud waiting to be served. After enjoying the view and the pint it was time to move on. I wanted to see the nice park but unfortunately it started raining. Unfortunately for me as well was that I forgot my jaket and ran ‘home’. Totally soaked I decided to dry myself and postponed the park for the last day.

Instead I headed towards the city and had nice dinner. You might think it was an original Donner and you would be right. Missed that so to hell with an Italian pasta dish.

My last day began at 9am with breakfast as usual and a Dublin bus tour trip which covered the Guinness Warehouse and Dublins park. It was absolutely amazing and I really want to go back to Dublin. You meet people from all over the world and there are so many pubs to go to and enjoy the company of great people.

So it was time to head back to Scotland which went without any problems apart from no buses leaving Glasgow Airport towards Paisley so I had to spend some money for a taxi. Overall it was an amazing weekend. Pictures will follow very soon.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Back again

Hi there,

I don’t know if I’ve any readers out there but I’m back. Finally. It’s been quite a while and the reason for me being back right now is because I split up from my ex and that I could reset my password. For some reasons my provider blocked my email account and I couldn’t enter it to reset my password. So bit of bad luck. anyway I’ll tell you what I’ve been experiencing so far.

First I bought a car. A nice handy car. White Vauxhall estate it is. Lovely car with plenty of horsepower to keep going. With 75 bhp the diesel is pulling nicely as long as I don’t drive up mountains

I split up form me ex. She was a pain in the arse but I won’t talk about her right now. My job is going fine and I’m moving into a new department. Will be interesting and I’m looking forward to it.

Well apart from that I want to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Although being in Scotland I think that riding can be a joy over here. For all of you who are interested in the machine I was looking at. It’s a Ducati Monster 696. Beautiful bike and so handy. I visited a school nearby and the price of getting the license is not too pricy. Anyway as it should be my first bike and a Ducati I decided to go for the Silverstone Ducati training. It’s double the price but it should be very cool.

Other stuff I’ve been doing is dating and spending tremendous amounts of money to extend my whisky collection. anyway I’ll post some new pictures very soon.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Driving range – my way to golf

You never know what might happen if someone feels that you’re bored and wants to work without you running around like a loon.

In most cases… well I don’t know what happens in those cases. I was sent out to Golf! Imagine me golfing never tried it before and playing such a boring game. At least it has to be boring because watching Golf is boring. Hmm ok ok I might had some prejudices about Golf.

After I got there (the driving range) I instantly started with the wrong clubs (sorry but I’m a tall bloke) and there were no other clubs available. So I used the clubs of my friend.

Hit some balls more or less successfully but it was fun! Unfortunately I didn’t wear warm clothes and a cold should be a result of my Golf adventure. Anyway, golf isn’t as boring anymore and even watching The Masters
was quite entertaining. You simply need to understand what the players are doing. Something you can imagine once you played it.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

I’m searching for a new laptop

My Asus laptop is still working and I created a backup with Acronis TrueImage to safe all my data but the urge to buy a new laptop which is ready to run Linux on it is too strong. Finally I decided to go with a Lenovo laptop. Preferably a 14inch widescreen model . However, finding a laptop meeting my requirements is not as easy as it seems because Lenovo don’t really offer a configurator. In fact it’s a mess to look for all the different models.

Searching sites and price comparison is my day to day business when I come home from work. I feel like a bit in an auction room. There are nice laptops out there but you need to be at the right place at the right time. Not easy if you’ve to work 8 hours a day. Not using ebay might be a drawback but I’ve never liked the platform.

So my search goes on and if you guys know some nice laptops with 14inch widescreen display and dual core cpu let me know it. Your help is much appreciated.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Move to Scotland – so many things to do

Here I go. Two weeks til my new life and I haven’t a flat in Scotland. A simple task you think. Loads of websites offering flats and flatmates so easy going and find yourself a flat somewhere.

And yet I was lucky. Found a flat in the East End of Glasgow which seemed to be a bargain. However, bargains and Glasgow don’t really go well with each other but as a German without any experience it sounded just too good and I needed a flat asap. ‘Phone the guy’ I told myself and finally got the promise of moving in. He even wanted to pick me up from the airport. Cool isn’t it?

So let’s jump to 2 days and counting. My old flat was nearly empty and the new tenants wanted to buy all my stuff for quite a nice amount of money. Suddenly I felt home sick although I haven’t left Germany! My friends, my flat. I would miss all that. Fortunately I didn’t have too much time to think about it. 1 day and counting. Get the tickets from the airport and have a nice pizza evening watching Oceans 13. Last time with my parents and last time in Germany. This evening was the most moving evening in my life.

Never before I was doing such an important step without any help. It was a step into the unknown. So don’t think about it and just do it. Works fine for most of the time. 1 hr and counting. My plane was parked at the gangway and my heartbeat was back to normal. Calm and sort of happy I went to the checkin just to be informed that I could directly proceed to the security check. Time to say goodbye to my friends and family.

Tears were shed and I didn’t dare to look back. I concentrated on the new life in front of me. Once seated on the plane I relaxed and had a nap before landing at London Stansted. I knew the whole procedure and walked straight to the airport express which had a malfunction. No trains and a connection flight. Brilliant but keep cool. No one will fly without you, so it was. Unfortunately my baggage went missing which I found out when I waited for my baggage before my new landlord picked me up. Without luggage I felt naked.

Anyway, it got even worse. The flat itself was a nightmare for a German. Ok I’m exaggerating a bit. Not even a clean Scotsman would have wanted to live in that. I won’t go into details as it would be too disgusting. Before signing a rental agreement I moved to the youth hostel I stayed during my first ever Scotland trip. Meanwhile I bought some underwear and was looking forward to my first day at work. My employee offered me an accomodation to stay. Couldn’t be that worse, could it?

Well, it didn’t get worse but it didn’t get any better, at least I had more room for myself without any luggage. Still.. Nearly two weeks after I arrived in Scotland my luggage came, to the wrong location. I missed the staff at the airport and they sent it to the youth hostel. About 30 miles away from my new, temporary flat. A taxi would have cost me more than 100 pounds so I thankfully found a mate on my class who drove me to Glasgow to collect my stuff. Thanks for that mate!

Having some clothes I spent the next 12 days in the temporary accommodation before I stumbled across an advertisement on the smallads. Someone offered a room in a nice house. I phoned him and arranged for a meeting with him. He’s an IBMer so should be a nice bloke. For the first time in Scotland I had real luck. My landlord is a very nice chap and we laugh a lot together. So after a month or so I was feeling good. Two months here and I finally arrived. Managed all my stuff and finally relaxed and gained weight. Shit!

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Mission accomplished – moving to Scotland

My first flight to Scotland had been two weeks before I was invited to the job interview in Cologne. I was paid a flight to Glasgow Airport and was picked up by someone. I spent a whole day having a look at the work and had to pass an assessment test.

This was kind of hard I’ve to tell you. Didn’t do so well as I expected so I was surprised when they encouraged me with this particular job (as you might guess they have never phoned me back). Glasgow is such a nice city. Spent my evening at a youth hostel and had a wee walk through Glasgow. Wow I was impressed.

Time to go. My clock woke me up and it was time to go. Striding through the Glasgowegian streets and listening to the natter on the roads I spent 4 hrs waiting for my flight back. I really used to love the Apple Store After an uneventful flight Germany had me back

Whether on the driving range, or out for a pleasure ride in a golf cart community, a golf cart cover is essential for those unexpected rain showers. One does not want to feel hot and humid inside the golf cart; therefore, airflow is extremely important. Vents in strategic locations will keep the air flowing and the riders dry. A smooth zipper is necessary so that one is able to close the cover quickly when those unexpected showers come along. Large, clear windows with low fogging features are essential for visibility of both the driver and passengers. When it is not raining, an important feature is storage. A good roll top system keeps the cover accessible but out of the way on a dry, sunny day.

So I just got home. Really bored. I had a few shots with a few friends. Its my first time having greygoose vodka. I shot that. It went down really smooth. It was actually really nice. Before all the drinking I went to the driving range. That was really good. I really think I improved on my game. I think if I drank before had I would be better. but you know that didn’t happen cause we werent thinking. We went to Eagle quest. After 8 they give you 90 balls for the same price as 60. I was hitting most of them pretty well. They were actually getting out there instead of just failing just infront of me. I was using a 9. I dunno what a nine does but right now its the only one I can really get the hang of. I think I might go again on Sunday. but we will see. Anyways I am now home. I’m just really tired and a litte smashed. But still good..haha. Not like really smashed but just a little….Ok Just thought I’d do an update. love you bye bye… I am thinking about watching Boys Before Flowers right now but I dont know how fast I can read the words. heh…Ok nighty.
