Never read a graphic novel before? Haven’t read a comic book in years?

Here’s some brand new stuff that came out the week of November 18 that I think is worth a look-see for someone with little to no history with comics. That means you should be able to pick any of these up cold without having read anything else. So take a look and see if something doesn’t grab your fancy. This is actually the first I’ve heard of this, but it seems like a decent and accessible high concept, even if the title is a bit heavy-handed. (New Orleans, LA; get it?) As you might’ve noticed, I usually focus on graphic novels and other larger comic publications. This time I decided to do just single issues, or “pamphlets” as they are increasingly being called. They’re still the cheapest and fastest way to get a quick dose of entertainment.

I get a lot of people contacting me through this site asking me to review their records. The emails always go a little something like – I notice you like Band x – you might like us etc. And this might seem a bit lame but 9 times out of 10 I really do enjoy the record they’re spruiking. Without this site I might never have hear four of my favourite artists this year – Golden Sores, Chord, TODD and Derek Rogers. Now I can add Locrian to that list because this record is simply fantastic. Take the vibe of Black Metal, mix in some drone and post-metal and you might have something close to what this sounds like. The record itself has two tracks, the first, Rain of Ashes is a mournful, bleak piece which might be the best thing to listen to when you read Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. It’s almost like a cross between Black Boned Angel and Pelican. There are muscial themes at play rather than simply noise and dark ambience (not that there is anything wrong with that). The guitar which at first seems blissful becomes sadder and more claustrophobic as the track progresses. The second track is Sehsa Fo Niar which is oddly enough the entire first track played backwards and it is just as bleak only the creep factor pumps up to 11.

This was originally released on Fan Death as a c60 cassette. It’s still for sale for about $4.00 from the Fan Death site. This CD has been released by the French label Basses Frequences and the artwork and sound quality are excellent. It might be worth your while checking out their site because besides picking up Rain of Ashes, their web shop is amazing.

WTF, I've been taking that shit for years

Move over ecstasy there is a new drug in town called ‘meow meow’ and guess what? It’s friggin legal. The totally “spin you out” hallucinatory drug Mephedrone can be found on the internet under “Plant Fertiliser” . The chemical formula is only one molecule short of ecstasy but is just as deadly. On the streets it is also known as “drone”, “bubble”, and “legal high”. Durham police reported a young man had hallucinated for 18 hours while under the influence of ‘meow meow’ believing centipedes were crawling all over him. It didn’t end well with him eventually ripping off his scrotum ! The drug is banned in Sweden, Israel, Norway and Finland but freely and legally available in the UK.

Today, Loïc Morvan, who created the UAV  simulation (UAV stands for unmanned aerial vehicle). I have presented in a video last week, is going to tell us more about his work.

Loïc, what is exactly behind this UAV simulation?

Well, this is a real physic 3D real-time simulation that you see here. It is based on Microsoft XNA for 3D rendering, and on different physic engines for physics. The simulated drone which is flying here has real physic attributes such as its mass, inertia, collision shapes… and it behaves realistically to torques and forces we apply to it. The physic equations are solved by precise discrete solvers, which make the drone having a behavior close to reality.

How did you build that simulated drone, and how long did that take?

The whole construction of the simulated drone did not take more than a few days.

First, we need the 3D model of the drone. That part of the work is done by our 3D designers, and it is actually the longer (1 or 2 days).

Then, we have to define the physic shapes of the drones, and physic constraints (mass, dynamic friction, static friction…). As the physic shapes are defined independently from the 3D model, we can choose our degree of complexity by using more or less accurate physic shapes.

Once the 3D model and physic properties are defined, I have attached some sensors, like the camera and the inclinometers.

Finally, I have added the rotors which are generic objects composed by a rotor blade and an engine (mechanic joint), so that the drone flying algorithm can be implemented.

That was over. The next step was to implement the drone control algorithms to test its behavior.

The simulated drone is supposed to behave like the real one, but you use generic objects, how can you explain that?

Generic objects such as the rotors have many parameters so that you can customize them to create your precise item. Here I have set particular max rotation speed and max torque for my rotors, but we could imagine setting other values for another drone.

What about the drone sensors (camera, inclinometers…)?

We also use generic elements. If you want to create a particular simulated motion camera, you just have to take our generic one and modify the parameters: size and quality of the pictures, number of frames per second, additional noise… That’s it!

Could you tell us more about how the wind is simulated?

The simulated wind is pre-generated considering the static objects (buildings…) which compose the simulation. This generation produces a 2D or 3D map which contains the wind information in each 3D point of the environment. Some of the algorithms we use for that come from the world of image processing.

The map is then inserted into the simulation and the wind is applied to every physic object.

You talk about “multi physic engine compatibility”, could you explain what it is exactly?

A physic engine is the program which computes the physic calculations. It contains the discrete solver used to integrate the equations. There are many physic engines available on the market: PhysX, Newton Game Dynamics, Havok, ODE…

Today, most of simulations are compatible with only one of these physic engines. What we do at SimplySim, is to provide the ability to be compatible with any of them, thanks to a technology that we have called SimplyDynamics. This is why we can talk about “multi physic engine compatibility”.

When you create a 3D simulation, do you only need the SimplyEngine?

No, I also need the 3D models of what I want to simulate. For the drone, we have modeled the drone and the 3D environment with 3D modeling tools which our not created by SimplySim. After that, we worked with the SimplyEngine and with our own edition tools.

Can you tell us a bit more about these edition tools ?

These edition tools represent an easy and graphic way to create the different parts of a simulation. For instance, we have one editor to design the physic properties, which is more user-friendly than typing code! There are a lot of other editors we prepare, some of them will be released in 2010, the goal is really to ease as much as possible the process of creating a 3D simulation.

Formés de longs morceaux monolitihiques, dont on a tout retiré, sauf le coeur palpitant, les
albums d’Eleh oscillent invariablement entre la peinture sonore captivante et le bruit cosmique capturé par hasard. Le morceau livré ici a quelque chose en lui de plus romantique que ses prédécesseurs : il est fourni avec une mélodie, un semblant de rythme, qui ne varient qu’avec une lenteur vague. Un disque supplémentaire difficilement écoutable sur ipod. Il faut au contraire le laisser vivre hors des écouteurs fermés : il embellit et propulse gracieusement les endroits où il est diffusé.

following on from snow blind, which frankly destroys and, in comparison, has blown every other record this year out the water (or at least to the side of the overly chlorinated pool), come these two within a month of each other.

firstly the bowie quoting (though should it not be bride?) bright failing star. interesting that it comes from the most instrumentally satisfying side of mr jones’ career. one that was eno warm and berlin cold. this has much the same feel. three transitive tracks of morphing morphine drone. churned out through twelve strings, pedals and tank-amps, from recordings of the usual geographic diversity.

it’s a decidedly straightforward affair. it feels more like one long piece, one giant om-like mental sorbet; a clearing out of bad karma, not in the cathartic sense but more in a meditative way. slow and calming. reminds me of open spaces and frozen nights, dead stars in dark skies. definitely less claustrophobic than usual. has a real somber stars of the lid feel to it, this one. unfurls, uncoils rather beautifully with minimal fuss and maximum pleasure.

his first vinyl-only album, limited to a few hundred copies from release the bats (no balls lp coming soon…). go get.

secondly, an angel fell… the companion piece (of sorts) to snow blind. i’ve already waxed ecstatic about said bugger previously. it deserves your attention. so does this for different reasons.

substituting snow blind’s occasionally fucked-off squall with something melancholic, something bucolic, something lesss raging and more accepting. christ it even starts with clean guitar. although he’ll probably tell you it was run through a small battalion of soviet-era stomp boxes.

so yeah more of a spring summer vibe. which is odd considering it’s pitch black outside and has rained for nigh on two weeks constantly here. like all his work it seems reflective of where he was at the time and what the weather was like, to be flippantly reductional. and despite the title (birds of prey, dead angels) this is not a morbidly corporeal record, rather it associates the heavenly with the earthly.

titled while listening to early mixes and spying said kestrel watchwatchwatching, waitwaitwaiting for something. the easy, precise, fluid motion of the bird complementing the easy, precise flow of the music. that delicate subtle balance between stillness and motion. there’s nothing particularly jarring on here. it all swells and absorbs and osmosisises together, sounds found and made bleeding over one another. lavender buzz builds from the fuzz of bee drone to bird noise and some very distant guitar. sunstroke by his standards is a pretty pop song, full of weird melody and floaty drifting looped tones and rhythm.

the album conjures up images of sleep, sun, flowers, water, animals. it’s very much of the senses, all very sensual; taste, touch, smell. has the hazy, lazy sensation of almostsleep in parks with maybe a somnambulant daydream buzz going on. it’s as much to do with snow blind as it isn’t. equally you could have a listen to yellow horizon and see where it started. strangely human for this kind of thing. but that’s what he does so well.

anyway it was recorded live to tape / disc / whatever folk record to these days. spekk had the good grace to put the bugger out. it’s packaged in a tasty wee book thing designed by the main main, mondii. go get some more.

aarktica: in sea – the most suprising thing about this record is not the cover of danzig’s (video below) am i demon? it’s not the fact that the fella who made the bugger lost the hearing in his right ear. nope. the shock-o-rama here is that with that name, the song titles and the now standard for fans of: (gy!be, labradford, eluvium) it’s not only an incredibly pretty fifty minutes, but it’s a rather warm inviting melodic one too. it’s all very kranky-esque in it’s mixture of the deconstructed and reconstructed organic sounds of strings and keys. if i had to draw parallels, and i’m lazy so i must, it’d be the drawn out lynchisms of stars of the lid or the beautiful fractured slo-pop of windy & carl (who frankly never get the plaudits they deserve). yeah like i said this’d be the time i’d usually drag out all my snowy, blizzardy, glacial chilly wintry metaphors. but no. not today fuckers. this is more like sinking into the warm mediterranean sea, letting the water carry you, feeling the sun on yr face, oozing through closed eyelids, licking lapping gently on yr brain. no doubt everybody including derosa himself would tell me to shut my cakehole, that this shit is all epic blinding white and outerspace cold. well to that i’ll say whatevah. hint’s of joy divisions closer, terry riley, jangle pop on downers (i.e. low). it’s physical (my woofer is vibrating things across the desk as i listen). it’s emotional (not hysterical as some of this kindofthing tends to be). it goes mmmmm. as in the onomatopoeic noise to denote a pleasurable taste experience; as in the om like transcendental vibration that runs through the entire album. exceptional. 

vlor: six-winged – right. this features a buncha people from the silber roster including michael wood & brain mckenzie from the fabulously titled something about vampires and sluts, yr man from aarktica, jessica bailiff (who i love in an almost creepy sexual way), annelies monsere and the fella in charge of silber. among others. and this is why you get a wildly eccentric mix of breathy pop and plinky noise and shoegazerry, ambient bloops and sweaty garage rawk stomp. and this is why you get two tracks to chow down on here.  if i was to say schizophrenic you’d be heading in the right direction. and yet somehow manages to sound like a proper bloody album and not just a pissaround compilation where a buncha folks bash out a buncha stuff they like playing but couldn’t squeeze into their own records. it manages to be aggressive, odd, soothing, brittle, massive, barely there, stupid, clever, loud, quiet and every goddam thing inbetween. not meant in the pejorative when i say this is all over the place. yet cohesive. cross-pollination and collaborative mind-melds. aargh. what the fuck am i dichotomously babbling about? christ even i don’t know. it’s not often you get to write about a record that at various points says earth, sons & daughters, swans, guided by voices, la monte young and cocteau twins. what you do need to know is that this is a wild and exhilarating listen. it’ll drag you up down left right and stroke yr inner thigh gently while occasionally biting yr extremities and whispering exotic erotica into yr inner ear.  oof.

The Fire Scout unmanned helicopter got its first job—hunting drug smugglers.

MQ-8B became the first unmanned helo to conduct actual operations on a navy ship. The UAV left on an anti-narcotics mission when from a port in Florida on Monday. The USS McInerney (FFG-8) is no stranger to the unmanned aerial vehicle because it hosted it during developmental testing. A crew of Northrop Grumman engineers are on board to help the aircraft stay healthy.

The operational tests will help the Navy field rotorcraft UAVs on its Littoral Combat Ship, which is still in development.

Depuis quelques mois, j’écoute des groupes aux noms qui résonnent plutôt tendrement dans mes oreilles fatiguées : Chora, The Hunter Gracchus, Part Wild Horse Mane On Both Sides… Le magazine Wire a la bonne idée de leur consacrer plusieurs pages ce mois-ci (qui d’autre est capable encore de s’engager pour de tels inconnus, de tels sons ?) et regroupe l’ensemble sous l’appellation de The Now Sound of Sheffield – référence au vieux son de Sheffield (Cabaret Voltaire préhistorique ?) et sans doute aussi à The Now Sound, label où l’on trouvait des singles de Skullflower, durs et hargneux.Chez moi, issus de cette clique, quelques CDR, des choses glanées sur Youtube ou autre, et surtout deux albums sortis par un label Français, Chironex : le premier est dû à The Hunter Gracchus et le second (en photo ici) est un enregistrement collectif capturé à Lyon l’an dernier. Sorti sous le nom de Drapeau Noir, regroupant Chora et Part Wild horse Mane On Both sides, ce disque est un long déploiement sinueux et sinusoïdal, incorporant des traditions aussi diverses et complexes que la musique indienne et le  noise, la musique improvisée et le drone purement psychotrope. Le genre de musique que l’on n’écoute pas en famille, encore moins entre “copains” et sûrement pas pour y trouver du plaisir, de la joieou un quelconque sentiment de plénitude. Pas non plus ici de dépression ou de défaillance. Cette musique se déplie organiquement et organise autour d’elle  une forme sonore (sonique) de renoncement implicite à tout autre chose. Ecouter cela, c’est bien s’immerger dans un corps, comme l’on découvre un premier amour auquel on n’aurait droit qu’une seule fois, mais dont la résonance continuerait à hanter, longtemps après. Il y a des sons désagréables, d’autres tout moelleux et envoûtants. Il n’y a pas d’équilibre, pas de beauté. C’est juste de la musique qui se crée et que quelqu’un a eu la bonne idée de capter, de capturer et de presser sur un vieux bout de vinyle noir.  Merci pour la transmission depuis Lyon, l’au-delà.

I just did an order from Squidco a little while ago and took advantage of the $8 sale they were having, ordering a few titles from the Utech label which looked interesting. This particular one is a three-track piece by Portland noise/dronist Daniel Menche. Quite concussive and aggressive, but very textural and involving at the same time. Each of the untitled tracks is apparently based off of the processed sounds of one instrument, with the first track labeled “organs”, the second “gongs” and the third “trumpets”. Track 1 builds hypnotically into crescendos of raw fuzz and sizzling, whirling overtones, while track 2 is a serene interlude of plangent gongs. The third track is a nightmarish wall of nasal tone clusters and infrasonic throbs.  I love Steve Roach and that kind of more atmospheric, ambient drone, and I also like the power drone of Sunn 0))) but this is some of my favorite drone I’ve heard since it seems to incorporate my favorite elements of both; it’s meditative and spiritual like the best drone while being fuzzy, grinding and intense like the best metal and noise. Probably the work of Phill Niblock is the closest parallel I can think of, but while that is music showing painstaking fastidiousness and attention to detail, this just emits a halo of rough-hewn spontaneity, like a white-hot slab of metal freshly drawn from a blacksmith’s forge. Play it LOUD on good speakers and bask in the frequencies like a lizard in the rays of the sun.

I mean, just look at this fucking guy, and he’s not a metal frontman, he makes drone records with gongs and trumpets. It’s like the brain of Charlemagne Palestine with the attitude of David Yow from Jesus Lizard. It’s genius.
