Nintendo DS Lite is cashing in on the downsides of its competitors PS3 and Xbox 360. One of the major downsides of the PS3 in comparison to its competitors as well as predecessors is that the PS3 is a very difficult to program for. Despite the foregoing the Xbox and Nintendo Wii remain with inferior systems and hardware capacities as well as potential in comparison to what PS3 can do. One of the major distinctive features of Xbox which has made it a cut above its main competitors, PS3 and Nintendo Wii is its integrated live service which enables the players to get into competitions, “Game Console“, online. With this facility players are given the privilege to download content such as other arcade games, trailers as well as game demos to enhance their gaming experience. Additionally players can also make the most of the facility to download shows and movies and this has made the Xbox 360 more preferable to its competitors. MOST.  AWESOME.  GAME.  Ever ….

Anyone who has ever played this game…. SNES, perhaps?… will know what I’m saying. Better than Myst. Better than Nethack (I just keep dying). Better than Sims. Arguments can commence now, but in my experience… FFIV is the most enjoyable game I’ve ever played.

So much so that I’m searching a working SNES console and the original cartridge for FFII. on eBay of course. A few years ago, you could find a SNES for $20. Now, I think it’s going for over $50. A hefty sum for an outdated system.

Anyway, Final Fantasy II or IV (as released on the Nintendo DS with updated graphics) has an amazing storyline with the most memorable characters ever. Remember when Cecil becomes a Paladin? Remember Palom and Parom? Kain? Tellah? Rosa? Rydia? I wanted to name my future child Rydia when I was 7 years old. And of course… the Chocobos.

Oh, yeah… and the music is absolutely phenomenal.

I can’t get into the story because there is too much and to talk about it wouldn’t do it justice. Playing the game, however, would. Just watch this video:

Poupeegirl Goes Portable // Siliconera.

For us poupee lovers, there’s going to be a poupeegirl game for the DS. I hope it will come in english. Not sure if the allure will still be there since you can’t interact with your friends, or fav other people’s rl outfits. So I will wait and see how the gameplay is like.

Nintendo really comes out with cuter games than the PS, their targeting of female consumers is quite spot on, with Loco Roco, Cooking Mama, and now poupeegirl.

I’m a big fan of electronic music, mainly because the sheer complexity of it all is mind boggling. To be able to control all those synths and beats and put them into strings that make sense impresses me. My own experience is anything most certainly at novice level. The following video recreates Daft Punk’s awesome “Harder Better Faster Stonger” track with nothing but just the Korg DS-10.

The Korg DS-10 is a music synthesizer for the Nintendo DS system.

For those who follow me on Twitter, last week, I made a call for what Nintendo DS games would be ideal to play. This was because last weekend, I went to Greenhills to get me and Chil a Nintendo DS Lite each.

Chil got the black one, I got the white one. Most if not all of my gadgets are black. My cameras are black. My mobile phones are both black. My PSP is black. My iPod Touch is entirely black but neither is it white. So for all intents and purposes, my DS Lite is my first and only gadget that’s white. And I named it Wadsworth, Wads for short. (Yes, I’m one of those people who give names to their property)

So mine is white, it’s got a plexiglass shell and then it has that additional hard case for added protection. I added that Goodsmile Racing sticker so now everytime I look at my DS Lite, it’s like I’m looking at the Tokyo Dancing Trooper’s chest (short of a Twitter sticker of course).

The interface was originally a Super Mario Bros design but I wasn’t exactly fond of it so after checking and updating my kernel, I went and edited my kernel’s skin. And what did I come up with?

I’m quite fond of my logo.

Nintendo Japan announced a new DSi system yesterday. Rumors around the web speculated that a new DSi with 4″ screens would make it into the new hardware. The rumors nearly nailed it.

The “DSi LL” will have a pair of 4.2″ screens. No announcements were made regarding the resolution of the dual screens leading me to believe they will remain unchanged from the original DS.

Immediately noticeable is the much larger body to accommodate the larger screens. Nintendo expects the DSi LL to be a grand slam with the elderly who would greatly appreciate the larger screens. A larger stylus will also be included in he box although the smaller stylus will also be included.

New colors for the DSi LL will include Wine Red, Dark Brown, and Natural White. The DSi will command a new higher price as well, roughly $220 USD. In an economic recession, it will be interesting to see how the higher price factors into consumer’s buying options, especially if the DSi arrives in the US in the near future at roughly the same price. A $220 price would not bode well with buyers when a Wii can be had for less than that in the US.

Photos may provide estimations, but seeing is believing right? Here’s a proper comparison of the monolithic DSi LL sitting next to the now puny DS lite and DSi.

This news comes as a surprise for many because Nintendo had just refreshed the DS line with the DSi last spring with a pair of cameras. While the competition is slimming things down (PSPgo I’m looking at you), it seems Nintendo continues to do it’s own thing. Murmurs are going around that Nintendo may be taking a page from Apple’s strategic planning, that is releasing a DS hardware refresh with minor changes on a yearly basis, as Apple’s annual iPod event does.

Is bigger hardware really what people want? Considering the trade off of not gaining any internal spec increases, the DSi LL doesn’t seem necessary so soon. My DS lite is still holding the fort down for me.

It’s clear this thing is no longer a portable, approaching MID (Mobile Internet Device) or even a netbook size.

In Japan, the DSi LL will come pre-loaded with a dictionary and some Brain Age Math mini game. Release date is slated for November 24.

Final comment: That stylus is HUGE.

UPDATE: The Nintendo DSi LL will be known as DSi XL in Europe and North America and will be released in both regions in Q1 2010.

Alright, keeping this short but sweet. Above is the upcoming Nintendo DSi dubbed the DSi LL. The most significant change you’ll notice here is the larger bottom screen which is AWESOME in my opinion!

Kotaku has a comparison between the DS Lite, DSi and DSi LL. Once this baby hits the market, I’ll be really hard-pressed to get this over a new PSP. This one just looks awesome and I’m really hoping that Nintendo’s got oodles of new firmware features and capabilities for it.

, worth buying. The third generation handheld Nintendo DS console is definitely different than its older counterparts, but many are questioning if the differences are worth the extra price. Right now you can purchase a new DS Lite for around $129 or less while a new DSi will cost you $169 or more.

Before you run out and buy a new DSi just because it’s the latest and greatest gadget there’s a few things you should know. This newest version of the, nintendo wii game

, DS console is slightly larger (yes, larger) than the DS Lite. The dimensions are a few millimeters wider. However, Nintendo did manage to knock almost 8 oz. (half-pound) off the weight by making the console thinner which is noticeable. The screen is also larger but only by 1/4 inch. The only way you would probably notice is if you’re a nerd like me and decided to pull out your ruler to check. The screen is brighter but, nintendo wii game

*sigh* I was at the grocery store this afternoon with my sister and mother. I had our iPod in my pocket ’cause my sister got the Kira laugh (from Death Note…go to youtube and look up ‘Kira laugh’, you’ll find hundreds…) on it, and since we want to try and get people into the halloween spirit, we were walking around with it in my pocket, headphones around my neck (hidden by my hair) playing it full blast. So, at some point, I accidentally dropped something, and when I bent down to pick it up…it fell out of my pocket. My jacket pocket, mind you, is incredibly shallow, so it wasn’t technically my fault. Plus, it only fell like…what, six inches or so? Well, the screen’s cracked now, which probably would’nt have happened if I’d dropped it on carpet…but I dropped it on stone hard linolium. Or whatever the fuck that stuff is. Anyways, it’s shit now.

I asked my mother if I could get her a new one for her birthday, since it was technically hers in the firts place, and she said she’d rather get me a videocard for my PC (I’m using a 90’s laptop, my PC is unusable due to a bad VC), and then maybe an iPod for christmas. Meh, it’s two months away, I can live that long without music. Sarah – my sister – on the other hand…she might not.

Most people would say this was unimportant, and that it happens to everyone once in awhile, but…it happenst to me a lot. Like, more than a lot. It happened to me with the DS Lite, MarioKart DoubleDash, Gears of War…it’s a miracle it hasn’t happened to my original DS yet, the poor little trooper! What with it’s cracked, uncalibrated touch screen, dog bite marks, lack of wrist strap…having been dropped and the game falling out of the slot more than once…it’s amazing.

Back to the subject at hand, I’m thinking of saving up every cent that I have to help fund towards a new iPod, that or one of them cheap Zune thingies. Meh, we’ll see.

*sigh* this has been one of the sorrows from the deathly corner that is known as my brain…god, this made me feel like shit.

Sony's PSPgo.

The Sony PSPgo has just launched and it’s gonna be one pricey portable. I love the way it looks but the price point would make most people think twice about getting one. The one major thing that I like about the device is its slide-out controls that make the whole thing compact. I wonder when I’ll be able to see one here in Malaysia? Hmmm… maybe it’s here already cos’ PS3 Slim units got in pretty early. But I digress, today’s post is not about the PSPgo but rather it’s about portable gaming habits & preferences.

After gaming for years I’ve come to a realisation that the games that I really get into on a portable are very different compared to what I play on their bigger cousins. So what is it that I like to play on my Nintendo DSi? Well, I’ve figured out that pick up & go games make for great additions to my library. Why? Here are a few reasons why I prefer arcade-styled games on a portable:

1. They are easy to pick up & put down for small bouts of gaming.
2. Short games are great for times when I’m waiting for someone or something to start.
3. It doesn’t take a lot of time to complete a level.
4. Near infinite replayability because you main objective usually is to break a high score.

My all-time favourite game right now is Metroid Prime: Pinball! It’s a great pick up & play game and you get hours and hours of fun with it. There are loads of micro game modes within the pinball levels that include shoot em’ up-styled bits and even boss fights. It’s a great game that comes bundled with a rumble pak for that added zing for those of you who are still on the older Nintendo DS or DS Lite.

Metroid Prime: Pinball. Really good fun.

After a long wait, I’ve finally purchased the new KH game. At first I wasn’t sure what to expect (I never really watched a gameplay video), but I was totally blown away. The game plays just like it’s PS counterparts, the camera is not perfect but it’s pretty damn good for a DS game.

The game  has good graphics, the textures are a bit muddy. The FMV’s appears to be using a different compression codec than other DS games because they don’t have those annoying artifacts that most DS FMV have.

That’s it for today, now I’m off to play some more KH

GlitchDS is an homebrew application  for composing/performing glitch music on the Nintendo DS.
It’s based on samples , that are played by masks and that can be altered with modulations and distortion.
The result is really interesting and is like having a micro laptop for your glitch needs that can travel in your pocket!

I made this video demo during a composing session, so it can sound not so  “groovy” or complitely logic in some parts, but can be interesting to show some of the power of this software and how it works.

I forgot to say that it’s sample based, but you can load your own samples with one shot sounds but even loops and then experimentation starts!
