Release Date: May 19, 2006

Everything old is new again. For all the advancements made in technology, for all the possibilities for innovation on Nintendo’s latest handheld, and for all the praise we’ve just spent 24 past pages offering to those games who’ve pursued those avenues the final salute has to go to one of the simplest designs of all. The best game on the Nintendo DS doesn’t make use of the WiFi Connection. It doesn’t do anything drastic with the two separate screens. It doesn’t make much use of the touch capability at all, and all of that is because it just doesn’t have to — New Super Mario Bros. is compelling and fun on the strength of its gameplay and the power of nostalgia alone.

2. Mario Kart DS
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: December 5, 2005

If all Mario Kart DS did was offer the best version of Kart we’ve ever seen, it would certainly still deserve a spot on this list. But, beyond that, it took the concept to the next level by introducing online multiplayer racing. Mario Kart DS was one of the debut titles for Nintendo’s WiFi Connection service, compatibility for which has gone on to become an expected inclusion in most major releases any more. But in late 2005, when the idea was still just getting going, it was Kart that helped solidify its appeal. Chances are Mario Kart DS is the first Nintendo game you ever played online.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: October 1, 2007

Phantom Hourglass wasn’t all about the look, though. It also employed a distinctive touch screen interface that saw Link being directed with stylus swipes and taps, as opposed to the traditional D-Pad control that players of past portable Zelda games might have expected. This decision to go all-touch turned out to be almost as controversial as the graphics style of Wind Waker, lending further proof to the theory that Zelda fans are just never satisfied. (In truth, it’s probably because Zelda fans are just used to an exceptional level of excellence in each sequel in the series.)

4. Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Publisher: Konami
Developer: Konami TYO
Release Date: October 4, 2005

Dawn of Sorrow was created as a direct sequel to the last GBA game, Aria of Sorrow. Same setting, same hero. Same Soul-absorbing abilities. In the history of handheld Castlevania, Koji Igarashi’s team has almost always gone back to the drawing board for every individual installment. But they broke that pattern here, and the refinements introduced to an already proven gameplay mechanic made it all the more memorable of an experience.

5. The World Ends With You
Publisher: Square Enix
Developer: Jupiter
Release Date: April 22, 2008

Did you think it wouldn’t make the cut? No doubt some of you have been concerned, but there was really no need to be — The World Ends With You is a such a distinctive, innovative, attractive and mind-blowing role-playing experience that there’s no way we would have left it out of our list of the Top 25 DS titles. And, better still, it finds its position in the Top 5.

The World Ends With You is a highly stylized RPG experience developed by Jupiter, known to most as the team responsible for the Kingdom Hearts series. Knowing that, it’s easy to pick up on similarities in the art styles employed by both — but that’s really where the similarities end. World Ends has a style all its own.

I’m back from my week-long vacation of watching two crazy dogs. Two! Whoever heard of such a thing? And man, they were so crazy. They were running around and barking at each other and all sorts of other crazy dog things. I deserve a medal.

However, while I was watching these two crazy dogs I was also near a Gamespot (a thing that I’m not near when I’m not watching two crazy dogs) and so I made good on my promise and nabbed Sonic Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood on the cheap.

I see what BioWare is trying to do here. With Dark Brotherhood they’re trying to redeem Sonic, make him cool again. What’s more, they’re not rebooting the series either. They’re incorporating all the plot and characters that the series has accumulated over the years. Retaining all this excess junk while trying to bring Sonic back to its roots isn’t easy. It’s a lofty goal.

In level II of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Chemical Plant Zone) there is a point where the path veers underwater. Water is very dangerous to Sonic. It slows him down and, if he doesn’t reach an air bubble in time, kills him. This path leads to a vertical shaft with rotating platforms. Sonic must ride these platforms up and out of the water to continue. Unfortunately, the jumping physics underwater make getting up these platforms difficult. If the player is too hasty and doesn’t time his jumps right he will fall back down the shaft. What’s more, there are no air bubbles nearby so falling down the shaft usually results in death.

It’s a choke point in the game. It requires patience to get through. Something that Sonic is not about. This section kills the momentum of the game and it’s no fun. Smart players go out of their way to avoid it (not me though. I always seem to end up on it on my playthroughs–accompanied with a sigh of exasperation each time).

If the entire Sonic franchise is Chemical Plant Zone then the first few games on the Genesis are the early fun speedy parts of the level and every game afterwards is this vertical shaft. The series is trying hard to escape from it. But try as it might it can’t escape falling to its death.

Dark Brotherhood represents the best attempt to escape yet. It doesn’t make it. I do appreciate BioWare trying to keep all of Sonic’s history. It’s noble of them to try and make all this crap good. Sculpting Michelangelo’s David out of a pile of poop doesn’t change the fact you’re working with shit. Likewise, trying to turn Amy Rose into less of a stalker stereotype and more of an actual character doesn’t change the fact that you’re using freakin Amy Rose.

BioWare’s main tactic to combat Sonic’s over bloated and over dramatic cannon is to stay light and inject a lot of irrelevance into the characters personalities. But this conflicts with the fact that they are retaining all the cannon and make references to the big plots of past Sonic games. This leaves the game feeling thin. I do want Sonic to return to the lighthearted adventures that defined the early games but I don’t think anything short of a complete reboot is going to accomplish it.

As for the gameplay… well… it just isn’t fun. As should be obvious RPG battles don’t mix well with a series about speed. BioWare tries hard to make Sonic work as an RPG. There are Elite Beat Agents type events where you must use the stylus to tape on-screen markers at the right time to strengthen or dodge special attacks. And while these events do keep the battles actiony they aren’t enough to negate the main problem with the battle system.

Basically, they’re too slow. Not only does the engine drag leading to lots of little load times (it really isn’t so bad but in a Sonic game it stands out) but it also takes forever to tell your characters to attack. There’s no auto-battle function. Just telling the team to perform basic attacks on one enemy takes eight taps. It’s far too many to just set up a round of basic combat. And if I want to throw a special attack in there that adds to how many taps it takes to start. It may not sound like much but after battle after battle it gets really annoying. A single tap auto-battle button would have solved everything.

What’s worse, the combat is based on agility rather than the strength versus defense stats that RPGs traditionally use. This means a strong enemy is going to be harder to hit instead of hit for a small amount of damage. Which in turn means that characters often miss attacks. And a missed attack is a null-value which is frustrating on its own AND means more rounds of combat which slow everything down. This system might have worked better in another game but here where I just want to go go go it’s boring and tedious.

BioWare put some of their trademark complexity into the battle system and character growth but tend to keep it too simple, this is a Sonic game after all, and again it’s too little to be interesting and ends up making the game fell thin.

BioWare tries hard to redeem Sonic with Dark Brotherhood but it’s just too much of a challenge. The series remains stuck in that vertical shaft. Sometimes it’s just better to reset and take another path. Which, sadly, isn’t something I see the Sonic franchise doing any time soon.

One minute she’s cheerfully praising your work with bubbly enthusiasm, and the next minute she’s literally spewing fireballs from her eyes in vitriolic contempt for the awful mess you’ve made for her meal-crafting instructions. Thankfully, she lives in the moment, flip-flopping her mood depending on your prowess and scores of individual tasks rather than focusing solely on the end result. Yes, Mama is back and she’s got a kitchen full of fresh recipes to hurl at you.”

Right now I am in the middle of reading a bunch of books about M/s to try and puzzle out my confusio

Right now I am in the middle of reading a bunch of books about M/s to try and puzzle out my confusion and wariness about it. The structure of authority exchange, as opposed to power exchange, seems unworkably dogmatic to me, but I’ve seen people do it really beautifully and compassionately and I’m fascinated by how that happens. My resistance stems principally from fear about putting a frame around my [everything coming to consciousness] self that would be so necessarily contingent and reliant upon somebody else. And although frames for one’s self made of people’s consciousnesses are all around, in book format and as workshops and course outlines, those can be entered and left relatively at will and carry no obligations (other than maybe trying not to drop them in the bath or interrupt them with your cell phone, and, er, the obligations of religious and political worldviews. Hm). Let’s just say they require time, but not necessarily investment or complete acquiescence.

How much sovereign self assurance does any person need? I’ve come to recognize that I’ve got very strong natural tendencies towards obedience and I often feel I have to take countermeasures against this (to avoid, for example, accidentally following the odd person with a lot of presence around at work). You may smirk, but people’s assertiveness really works on me. It’s scary how well. Unconscious surrender comes naturally to me, and I’m not convinced it’s thoroughly healthy.

I’m pretty immersive—I don’t like doing things by halves—so I have to think about probable costs and benefits of getting on board with something before I decide to invest myself in it so I don’t get unintentionally consumed. Significant word choice: my partner A. says, “I’ve never heard anyone actually refer to their supervisor as ‘the person in charge of me’ but that’s actually how you see it, isn’t it?”—and I do: I see labour more as a channeling of energy towards accomplishment than an activity to be overseen. I also relate strongly to the phrase, “getting on board with something,” because once I’ve aligned myself with another force, I don’t parcel out my investment at every step; I simply do what it takes by leaps and bounds and give what I’ve got to the finishing stroke.

I know that the M/s dynamic is not for me—I don’t need it, it doesn’t suit me, and in fact, if anything, I’m moving in the opposite direction on a separate path: learning to claim and channel more in D/s. But since my natural orientation blends conditional submission, willing service, and instinctive surrender—and it’s that last one that troubles me the most—it might benefit from some of the tools and approaches used in M/s, though certainly not as a categorical mode of relating.

Anyway, more book reviews to follow shortly. And surely more posts.

The first time I was back at C’s after her mopey episode, I was in the kitchen making chicken sandwiches and I asked if the ladies wanted mayo. C, ever ladylike, hollered back, “You know I love your ‘MAN-aise’ all over my breasts, baby.” (chicken breast, get it?) V jokingly lamented that C was hogging all the “man-aise”, and C said “maybe if you get on your knees and ask nicely you can get some man-aise on your breast too. You might have to help shake the container though.” “Don’t worry,” I hollered back, “I’ve got plenty here for both of you,” which led to riotous giggling that subsided as I brought the plates into the living room.

C announced that she was afraid to taste the sandwich now, and V said, “I don’t even care, I’m starved,” ate a bite and declared, “honey, your boyfriend’s MAN-aise is delicious,” cracking herself up to the point of choking on the bite she was chewing. “Don’t choke,” I told her. Recovering she said, “I know, that’s C’s job.” C perked up at that and said, “Wait a minute, how come you act all concerned and tell V not to choke, and with me you’re shoving it in and telling me to choke on it?” “Because that’s how you like it,” I retorted, to which she replied “Oh yeah, ok.” “Dayam,” V said, fanning herself, “this is the hottest conversation about a chicken sandwich ever.”

“Oh,” C said, “I thought we were talking about his cock and what comes out,” and cackled.

V made a frowny face and said, “Oh sure it’s funny for you when you two get to go in your room and lock the door later. I’m the one who’s going to be scrounging batteries out of the remote.” C said “awwwww” and then ordered V to report to her for snuggles, then enlisted me to make it a group snuggle. We’ve engaged in “hug sandwiches” with C in the middle before, but this was the first time we’d done it with V in the middle. “This is nice,” V said, and then told me, “Poor guy, you can be in the middle next time.” C said,Nah, he won’t make good sandwich meat, no boobies!” and squeezed V’s right breast.

C and V do this kind of “innocent” grabbing of boobs and butts as they pass each other in the hall or kitchen or whatever, as well as caressing hugs and closed-lip kisses at bedtime and the like. When we’ve snuggled with C in the middle before, there have been little contests between V and I where one of us gives C a peck and the other follows suit pointedly, usually culminating in a breast squeeze by one of us that the other imitates. V sarcastically stated, “When C’s in the middle, her left boob doesn’t get left hanging,” so I cupped her left breast and gave her and C both a “so there” eyebrow.

C looked at me with challenge in her eyes as she leaned down to kiss V’s cheek, so I did the same. She raised an eyebrow at me and leaned forward to give V a peck on the lips, which I also began to imitate, but V got weirded out and extricated herself. C pouted and promised to behave if V returned to the couch, but V said she was going to go to her room to read and leave us to be alone. Then she said “Whew, where’s that remote anyway?”

C and I canoodled a bit more before retiring to her bedroom. Post-coitus she reminisced about how flustered we’d gotten V, giggling, then asked how far I would have taken it. I told her I was the one following her lead, but I wouldn’t have backed down from a challenge. She asked if I thought us playing that game with V was mean, and I said I doubted it, and that the “joke” about finding the remote was Vs way of letting us know that she did enjoy it, and that she was really going to masturbate about what had transpired, even though it had gotten too real too fast just then. I warned her not to be surprised if V became a little distant or skittish about the affection stuff for a while.

C asked if I had found it fun. And I replied that she knew I enjoyed pushing her boundaries, and that yes it was definitely fun pushing both hers and by extension V’s. She asked if I was disappointed that it didn’t go further and I told her that no, mostly, because getting V to the point of blushing and needing a break was the fun part, but that it seemed to me that C was ready to go a little further yet, and so I was disappointed that I didn’t get to see how far she was willing to go before getting shy. I asked if she was disappointed, and she said no because it was fun and all, but she didn’t want to do anything V would regret, and didn’t know if she was ready to see me doing “certain things” with V just yet, even though she was pushing because she was curious to see if I would.

I warned her that if she made it a challenge as she had, I would go as far as she pushed and V was willing. She said she wondered if we were taking advantage of V being lonely and horny because after all V is straight. I told her I didn’t know, but that in my observation, there are certainly straighter girls than V, but that if she felt like continuing to pursue this course, we should make sure it was always when sober to be extra sure no advantage is being taken.

C laughed and said, “And here I was thinking about how we should have drinks after dinner tonight to loosen up.”

I told her not to be in a hurry, that I knew she’d gotten a thrill out of that day’s events, but wouldn’t it, after all, be more fun to spread that thrill out and take out time getting to whatever level it finally got to? She conceded that, but said that she was more thinking about how she didn’t like V being lonely and having to masturbate when she had two people who loved her and could be “taking care of that”. “You love V, don’t you?” she asked, “I mean not like me, but as a friend right?” She talked about how the felt V was her family and that it would be nice if we could all just be one family together. I asked if this was all about creating something she wanted or about preventing something she didn’t want. She was confused, rightly so, and I explained that I wondered if this might not be more about being afraid of losing V to some guy that might come along than about wanting to share me with V and V with me.

She said, “the other day when you were alone with her I tried to imagine how I would feel if you were fucking, and it made me sad, but then I thought about if it was some other dude she was with and I don’t know which bothered me more.” “I know,” she said, “I’m just selfish because I don’t want to lose either of you guys.”

She seemed frustrated about her feelings getting in the way of the “logic” of making this a triad. I told her it didn’t make any sense to sacrifice her needs to have me to herself to try and hang onto V, because I knew that no matter what, she wouldn’t lose V to any guy who did come along. “I know,” she moped, “but also I think about how who knows who she might date and they might be a jerk or not even good in bed and I know you aren’t a jerk, and that you’re definitely good in bed.”

I told her that it didn’t sound like a good idea to me, to become involved sexually/romantically with V together out of fear of unknowns. Her rebuttal was that it didn’t seem like a good reason to avoid it either. “True,” I said, “so you should put some thought into figuring out what you want, rather than what you don’t.” “And,” I added, “keep in mind that V gets to choose what she wants, too.” “I know,” she replied.

Later that evening, at bedtime, she and V did their traditional hug and kiss while I stood by. Afterward, V looked at me and said, “Well?” so I hugged her and gave her a soft peck on the cheek. “On the lips, buster,” she chided. “Yeah,” C agreed, so I did. “I love you guys,” V told us. “We love you too,” we replied.

When we got to her room, C said, “That was so cute. I almost want to tell you to go spend the night with V. You guys were adorable.”

“Oh?” I asked. “Yes,” C responded, “except I need you to fuck the shit out of me right now, so no.”

We haven’t all been at their house at the same time really since then, so not much else has happened. The night before last, C and V slept together. “Slept!” C emphasized, and said it was mainly for the purpose of warmth. There has apparently been a brief conversation about what happened the other day, in which V admitted to having fun but getting weirded out at the same time, with some discussion about what a “good guy” I am for not immediately trying to push for a threesome at the slightest hint. C has been extra clingy after that day though.

Whilst the majority of next generation titles have embraced 3D, Shigeru Miyamoto still believes that two dimensions can still provide the player with equally as engaging game worlds.

I don’t think everything needs to be 3D, or that just because we’re seeing more 2D games now, that everything’s going to shift back to 2D. I think that what’s going on is that people are realizing the benefits of a 3D game, and at the same time, remembering what the benefits of 2D games were. When going to 2D, you need the courage to not be so attached to visual appearance of the games and to really pursue the gameplay experience.

Last week after wrapping up the visit to the Apple UWS Store, I went to try to get some info on Barn

Last week after wrapping up the visit to the Apple UWS Store, I went to try to get some info on Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-reader. The one guy at the Nook booth started to chat me up and jazz up Barnsy’s new e-reader contender by sizing it up against the Amazon Kindle. There weren’t any working models on hand, only plastic dummy units. So I picked one up to get a feel for it and I can say without even having to play with a real one, I am not impressed. If the plastic on the dummy is indicative of the final product, then it’s tacky. The shape is bulky compared to the Amazon Kindle, and the aluminum back on the Kindle will be hard to beat. The touch screen the demo guy said is just like coverflow on iPhone. Is it? Won’t know until a working unit is tested.

Funny story, when I was ready to leave, raised up my DSLR to take some shots of the little Nook center and the guy said it was company protocol to not allow photos. Not allow photos for a product Barnes & Noble wants to become a Kindle killer? Smells like BS to me. I had to ride the escalator twice just to get these two lousy shots. Nook guy, say hello to the Internet!

One more thing. I had no idea Barnes & Nobles sells video games now. Overpriced like their DVDs and CDs, B&N is cashing in on digital media without a second thought it seems.

It’s a Magnum Chrome Case for the DS. My DS is boring Polar White. This will totally add to my gaming experience. If I could only check myself out while playing….

Get it for $39.95 at Console Shop!

Needs some help replacing your case? Watch this YouTube video on how to do it while listening to triumphantly soothing music….

And of course, he is playing Final Fantasy IV in his DS! (4:45)

Everyone’s favourite lawyer-em-up series Phoenix Wright is heading to Wiiware courtesy of Capc

Everyone’s favourite lawyer-em-up series Phoenix Wright is heading to Wiiware courtesy of Capcom. If you haven’t played these games, they are a mix of point and click puzzle solving and dialogue navigation, with a smattering of great humour thrown in for good measure. One case involves rookie lawyer Phoenix cross-examining a parrot for example. *ahem*

Three individual titles are set to hit Wiiware in Spring 2010, starting with the superb Ace Attorney, which sees Wright defending his bumbling oaf of a best mate Larry Butz while becoming entangled in a much deeper murder case. Justice for All sees Wright squaring off against whip-wielding lawyer Franziska von Karma, daughter of big baddie Manfred von Karma. Finally Trials and Tribulations pits you against the ruthless Godot, the meanest mofo this side of the jury stand.

While UK and Europe gamers first got to grips with the series in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney on DS, the series actually started in Japan as a series on the Gameboy Advance. These Wiiware titles are essentially ports of the GBA originals blown up to fit your TV with all the pixelation and grainyness intact. It’s a tad lazy, but the games are such good fun that it doesn’t really matter.

See what I mean?

and again:

Ok, so I’m a strong believer that games don’t have to look good to be amazing and I wish more people could understand this, but with a much slicker DS version already available, surely Capcom could have seen fit to release this on Wiiware instead?

Still, if you can overlook the visuals, this will be a must-have collection for fans of point and click games everywhere when it launches on Wiiware next year.

¡A mandar!

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Unfortunately I have already forgotten what categories I set aside for myself to review games by ear

Unfortunately I have already forgotten what categories I set aside for myself to review games by earlier in this blog. So I’m just going to tell you what I think and really, I just made up those categories to bash on FF12.

Shin Megami Tensei if you don’t know is a basically a franchise that is equivalent to demonic god killing pokemon. Typical aspects of the series is collecting/turning into demons (demons that can be anything from Beelzebub to Odin to Vishnu to Metatron), reshaping the world per your character’s choices, and beating up God and/or Lucifer. The series was pretty much born on the controversial side of life and typically has fantastic, thoroughly thought out writing. That said, not all the entries are particularly good.

Devil Survivor I love. Its not for everyone but it is a fantastic game. I have NEVER been this addicted to a handheld game. Oh sure I own plenty of them but most have weak stories with overly simple game mechanics.

The story for Devil Survivor is great, primarily because of all the well done characterization. The story, however, doesn’t really take off until the third day. The first 3 days are all setup and an introduction to an SMT universe. I’m also pretty the brainstorming for this project went something like, “I just saw Battle Royale, lets do that in an SMT universe!” The game is filled with a number of characters, most of whom you can have in your party. The trick is they all have different philosophies on how to solve the game’s crisis and will only help you so much as to attain their goals.

A quick summary of the game’s plot: The government in an attempt to trap a religious sect that summons demons known as the Shomonkai, places a quarantine over a section of Tokyo. The main character and his friends get caught up in the mess by finding demon summoning “COMPs” (which look suspiciously like Nintendo DS’s). Its up to you whether to stay or run.

Gameplay wise this is probably the easiest SMT game I’ve ever played. You fuse demons or buy them at a demon auction. You can only fuse demons up to whatever your main character’s level is. Skills/Magic can be learned by “Skill Cracking”, which translates to: this demon has the skill you want this character to have, so have that character kill it.

The fighting takes place only on a tactics RPG style field of squares. There are a variety of movement skills which make this aspect pretty interesting. Whenever you attack an enemy the fight transitions to a traditional style turn based RPG forum, with your character and their two demons versus three enemies. Getting criticals or hitting the enemies weakness earn characters an extra attack while missing or hitting an enemy with an element it is immune to can lose your character their extra attack. Four characters with their demons can be on the field at once.

The graphics is really where this game gets its bad marks. While all the images are stylized like in the Persona series, there are little to no animations. It was really quite a baffling thing when I realized this a week or two ago. But at the same time, it is a Nintendo DS game. And Nintendo hasn’t been known for their wonderful graphics since the Gamecube (the Gamecube being the technical best designed last gen system).

The music for the game is surprisingly enjoyable. I typically keep the volume knob down on my DS but on this game I find myself turning it up on occasion.

Overall, if you like turn based RPG’s, heavy philosophy and characterization, and own a DS, then go buy this game. If you don’t own a DS…. well there really aren’t that many great games for the DS this one just might make it worth owning one.
