Preface: I work at a local telephone company that offers dial-up and DSL Internet. The DSL has sever

Preface: I work at a local telephone company that offers dial-up and DSL Internet. The DSL has several different plans to pick from, ranging from 1.5Mbps to 6.0Mbps, different dial-up accounts built into the DSL plan, different number of emails depending on what plan you choose, and it is all unlimited – there is no cap on what you use. I had the 1.5Mbps plan, and last month moved up to the 6.0Mbps plan.

I was blessed recently to be able to spend a weekend with my grandparents, and my aunt. They live in the same house – a house that I visited when I was younger and hasn’t changed that much. I love the house, love my family, but hate the Internet there.

I thought I hated the dial-up service my aunt subscribed to – she lives further out in an ATT exchange, and must be on some pair-gain equipment, because her dial-up speeds were terrible no matter who her ISP was.

However, she has since signed up with a satellite Internet provider (not telling who, although there are very limited options in the area) and it is good as long as you don’t look at any website that has graphics, video, or any other type of multimedia. So, basically, this Internet connection would have been wonderful ten years ago. It isn’t able to keep up with my web surfing habits, however. And I don’t mean those types of surfing habits…no, I mean CNN, MSNBC, Huffington Post, Facebook, Autoblog, etc.

Visited those websites lately on a “high-speed” connection? See what I mean? They aren’t bad – they do have a lot of multimedia though, and it just killed my aunt’s connection.

Now, to be fair, you should expect this from a satellite connection – they do their best to make sure you understand that you have a daily cap, a monthly cap, and extra charges everywhere.

I understand that if it’s all you can get, it may be better than dial-up most of the time. I hope it is…I really do. It’s sad to think that I will be looking first and foremost at what type of Internet connections are available where I want to live in the future, instead of things like: does it have a big backyard? how many bedrooms? what are the taxes like?

Over at FD Wholesale, we’ve been doing some trials in our R&D department bonding Annex M tails together and we’ve been able to get throughput normally associated with leased lines. We’re roughly 1.5Km from our local exchange, and when bonding 2 lines, the total sync rate was 26.7Mbps down and 4Mbps up. When we bonded 4 lines, we obtained 56Mbps down and 8Mbps up.

The applications for this are wide ranging. Consider having a client who lives 5Km+ from their local exchange. 1 DSL would offer them little throughput to sustain a number of users. Aggregate 2 or 3 together and suddenly they can start to look at IP applications that may improve business processes such as SIP or Video conferencing. Another example may be where a client can’t gain wayleave agreement to obtain a fibre run. In this instance, they can have a bonded Annex M service offeirng up to 80Mbps down and 10Mbps up. Obviously these are headline speeds and are dependant on quality of copper and line length, but in all but the worst circumstances, a bonded Annex M service can start to become a compelling alternative to EFM or FTTC. Using the BE network, this is also available immediately, nationwide. No waiting for 2012 to have a coverage of c.300 exchanges.

Currently this is something that all our channel partners are utilising, as it gives them a cost effective alternative to a leased line. Based on the Cisco proprietory protocol, traditionally the stumbling point has been the high initial price point associated with the routers. However, we’ve been conducting some trials with a manufacturer called Virtual Access using their GW7000 boxes, and they’ve been very successful in terms of throughput and stability. However, even more compelling is the fact that they lower the initial price point of the solution to sub £500.

Personally I feel that bonding Annex M tails, at the core is a lot more resilinet solution than trying to aggregate them at the client end, using an external aggregator, as it means that there is little overhead, lower packet loss and less latency. In my opinion, the main thing to take away from this is that even though fibre will still have it’s uses, the applications for DSL are ever increasing. Whereby traditionally a leased line was the only method available to provide large amounts of throughput, the landscape is ever changing to incorporate DSL.

One of my favourite BDD frameworks is easyb. I really like the dsl for user stories. In a previous p

One of my favourite BDD frameworks is easyb. I really like the dsl for user stories. In a previous post called Easy Requirements by Example I discussed how easy and clear this dsl can be.

For Scala I would also like to have a dsl just like the one of easyb. Writing a dsl in Scala is real easy, not as easy as in Groovy, but easy enough. So I decided to see how fast I could write a story dsl in Scala.

So, I need to be able to write things like the following

   given ("a blogger with a blog") {
    	val blogger = new Blogger("Mr Blog", "mrblog@blogger.com", "passwd")
    	val blog = new Blog("blogTitle", blogger)

		when("mr blog writes a new post") {
			blog addPost ("post Title", "post Text");
		}
		and
		when("mr blog publishes its post") {
		    blog publishPost
		}
		then("the post should be publised for reading") {
			blog.published shouldHave "post Title"
		}
	  }

The words given, when, then, and, shouldHave are part of the dsl.
The story dsl words are defined by a curried function. They have a explaining piece of text as the first argument and a code block as the second argument.

See below the definition of given

  def given(text: String)( codeBlock: => Unit ) = {
	  codeBlock;
  }

Because given is a curried function you can pass in the arguments one at a time. And when you pass in one argument you can choose to use curly braces instead of parentheses. As you can see in the above example, the given function has the rest of the story as the second argument within curly braces. So, the when, then, and form the codeBlock argument.

Here is the definition of the other methods

  def then(text: String)( codeBlock: => Unit ) = {
    codeBlock;
  }

  def when(text: String)( codeBlock: => Unit ) = {
    codeBlock;
  }

  def and(text: String)() = {
  }

… Yep this is really simple!

Because the codeBlock parameters are so-called “By-name-parameters” the codeBlocks of the functions are only evaluated when the given method evaluates it’s codeBlock! Also because closures in Scala see changes made to the free variables outside of the closure itself, you get the sequential execution ordering of the story.

The only thing that is left is the shouldHave word. As you might have guessed this is just a simple implicit conversion. To have free integration with IDE’s and other tools I choose to use JUnit as the underlying framework. So all the dsl vertification words are mapped to JUnit asserts as you can see below.

  implicit def shouldHave(l: List[Any]) = {
	  ShouldHave(l)
  }

case class ShouldHave(i: List[Any]) {
    def shouldHave(j: Any) = {
    	assertEquals(j, i.find( _ == j))
    }
}

You can use the dsl in your JUnit test like this

[/sourcecode]
  @Test
  def bloggerSpecification() = {

    given ("a blogger with a blog") {
      .....
    }
   }
[sourcecode]

You can imagine that you would like to execute a story multiple times with different argument values. Lets say that you would like to execute the story with multiple post titles. A little extension of the dsl made that possible. I introduced the words testcases, addCase and execute_testcases_with_specification.
See below an example

    testcases {
    	var postTitle: String = null;

    	addCase { postTitle = "title 1"	}
    	addCase { postTitle = "title 2"	}

    	execute_testcases_with_specification {
    		given ("a blogger with a blog") {
    			val blogger = new Blogger("Mr Blog", "mrblog@blogger.com", "passwd")
    			val blog = new Blog("blogTitle", blogger)

    			when ("mr blog writes a new post") {
    				blog addPost (postTitle, "post Text");
    			}
    			and
    			when ("mr blog publishes its post") {
    				blog publishPost
    			}
    			then ("the post should be publised fo reading") {
    				blog.published exists(_.title == postTitle) shouldBe true
    			}
    		}
    	}

What you see is that there are two test cases, each specifying a different value for the postTitle. The story is executed for each test case where the free variables are changed according to the test case at hand.

In order to make this work I stored all the test cases in a list. Then for each test case I first evaluate the test case. This sets the free variables of the story closure. Next I evaluate the story itself.

Again the code is really simple as you can see below.

object TestCase {

  var codeBlocks = List[() => Unit]()
  var scenario: Any = 0;

  def addCase( codeBlock: => Unit) = {
	  codeBlocks = codeBlock _ :: codeBlocks
  }

  def execute_testcases_with_specification( scenario: => Unit) = {
    codeBlocks.foreach( codeBlock => {
      codeBlock();
      scenario;
    })
  }

  def testcases( codeBlock: => Unit) = {
	  codeBlock
  }
}

If you made it this far in the post… what do you think of this approach?

A member wrote:
You plugged a XP machine into the modem/router and nothing happened. So I was curious why you would think a Linux based machine would make a difference. Sorry if it came off as snotty. And I have always said, the only stupid question is the one un-asked.

The other thing you could look into is http://www.virtualbox.org/

Sun VirtualBox. I have Ubuntu and Win7 RC installed inside it. But you can install all kinds of OS’s, mess with them all you like. That way you aren’t limited to just that version Linux, you could install them all, as long as you have the hard drive space.

My reply:
Aha, you misunderstood. I have NEVER until now had the guts to plug anything into the Westell router, because we have little money, and I cant afford the headache and expense of messing up my home internet. But now, from what you tell me and what I have read in google (and I wrote a long support question to Startech, who will probably get back to me next week about their Ethernet card which is only $10, and claims to have Linux drivers).

Also, here is a funny true story. Last week, I thought my stepdaughter was telling me that she has an old tower she doesnt want, and I could wipe out the drive with a pure Ubuntu install. She just called to say her husband was bringing it over with a monitor (which I can keep)…. but when I told her my plans, she was horrified, and said that she wants me to CLEAN UP THE VIRUSES and give it back to her, because right now it will only boot in F2 Safe mode. Ha ha! I am glad I asked, and she should have been less vague and cavalier. But now I have little fear about plugging the cable from the Westell jack into the ethernet jack. Besides, it stands to reason what when any software is about to modify anything, it would prompt.

Although, here are two things I didnt understand about Verizon DSL. Once, I changed the password on the Verizon email account, and that DISABLES the modem that is connected to that account, and a service technician must do a number of things over the phone to restore the DSL service. That was a painful lesson. Another time, DSL was down, and I though I should take a pen and hit the reset button on the Westell. I didnt realize that doing that WIPES OUT EVERYTHING in the Westell, and you have to get on the phone for an hour with a technician to reset the Westell. So perhaps those two horrible experiences contribute to my fear and hesitancy to mess with the Westell.

Old saying: once burnt, twice shy. Plus, if it ain’t broke dont fix it. Years ago we had our first home DSL with AOL. My stepson who was only 13, decided one day to reinstall AOL from a new diskette that came in the mail. That WIPED OUT THE DSL, and AOL was NEVER able to restore it, and their tech dept was not too worried about restoring it.

Thanks for your feedback, it did help! I wasn’t hesitant about hooking up an Ubuntu machine. I am just scared to death of Verizon and Westell. I did take the courage to go into the Westell setep to enable Wifi with WEP key protection. 3 years ago in my 27 story high rise, one could pick up all sorts of unprotected wi-fi. NOW, all the channels are protected and one is even named “GET AWAY!!!”. People began to realize that other people could steal bandwidth.

I would like to close by suggestion something that I think Thomas Jefferson would suggest were he alive today: namely FREE PUBLIC WIFI in every city. Jefferson asked that only two accomplishments be mentioned on his tombstone: that he signed the Declaration of Independence, and that he founded the University of Virginia. Jefferson suggested free education for all, which in his day seemed like a strange idea. After all, education was only for nobility and the wealthy. The peasant farmers and laborers didnt need to know how to read. But Jefferson realized that unless ALL were educated, even laborers and farm workers, then there could NEVER be a government “of the people and by the people.”

What does this have to do with free wi-fi, you ask? Everything. Today, computer illiteracy is the new danger. In 1960, my mother had to fight to get me a $2000 World Book encyclopedia so I could do my homework in 6th grade, because there were no libraries close by. But today, who buys an encylopedia, when there are search engines and things like Wikipedia?
Every child NEED computers and internet access. True there are dangers and abuses in chat rooms etc, but then there are dangers in the postal mail system. That does not mean we should do away with the post office. It means that we should find safe guards and establish punishments for crimes committed using the U.S. mail or the internet. We must make it a crime to shout FIRE as a joke in a public auditorium, but we must preserve freedom of speech. And if there is ANYTHING at all in this world which will unify all peoples and nations and creeds it is the communication and understanding provided by the Internet. I know because I have a friend of 10 years now in Tehran Iran, who loves Plato and Tolstoy and Dostoevsky and everything that is western and free.

In a very poor neighborhood in one large city in India, where there are many high tech computer firms, as an experiment, they installed many rugged computer terminals in the alley ways where homeless street children dwelt. Those children quickly learned how to be very

http://forums.radioreference.com/

I just spent a LONG LONG TIME typing this post into the above forum and it disappeared. SO, I am composing it HERE first in my BLOG so that it will NOT disappear.

I use Verizon DSL with a Westell 327W Router. I have one Dell Windows XP hard wired to the router, and second XP connected via WiFi with a Belkin USB adapter.

I want to take a 3rd computer, an Ubuntu desktop install, and use a startec.com ST100S 10/100 mbps Ethernet PCI, which claims to have a Linux driver.

BIG QUESTION: If I do succeed in attaching the Ubuntu Desktop through the startech ethernet, is there any danger that the Westell modem will somehow be reset or reconfigured or disturbed so that I lose Internet and have to wait for a Verizon technician to show up and fix things. IF there IS such a danger, then I will go with wifi for the Ubuntu desktop.

tags: business · Verizon Online DSL

While Verizon gets a lot of warranted attention for investing heavily in fiber to the home, the last few years have seen a growing number of allegations that this investment came at the cost of neglected DSL and landline networks. Union workers have told us they aren’t getting the tools and resources they need to support DSL & landline customers effectively, and in some states the resulting service issues have been obvious. Florida in particular has been a problem spot for Verizon, with higher than normal customer complaints, and union employees picketing Verizon offices last year. Regulators investigated, and found that lack of prompt repairs were leading to extended outages for customers. After many months of debating how these complaints should be resolved, Verizon yesterday agreed to refund customers $1.75 million and pay the state another $250,000. Of that $250,000, about half of it will be going to the state’s the state’s Lifeline Assistance program, which was designed to aid elderly and low-income Floridians.What does this mean if you’re a Verizon customer in Florida? According to the Associated Press, Verizon has roughly 900,000 customers across six Florida counties. Each one of them should see a whopping $2 credit on their bill sometime in the next ninety days.

In my previous post about your internet connection sucking, I covered some stats and what both telcos and cable companies will do to stop municipalities from taking matters into their own hands, namely suing them. Verizon is getting away with delivering crappy service because there is no competition in the DSL and landline market in North Florida. You will be very hard pressed to find both AT&T and Verizon in the very same areas (wireless is a whole different post). Miami-Dade, Broward and I would guess Palm Beach is pretty much covered by one telecom, AT&T (previously Bellsouth) while the cable market is mostly Comcast (previously Adelphia). There are some exceptions to the cable markets. Miami Beach has Atlantic broadband and some parts of north Florida have Brighthouse.

No more of this single provider per area non-sense. We need more telecoms and cable companies to compete with the established AT&T/Comcast here in South Florida. If Verizon, Charter, Clearwire, Speakeasy and other do not want to step up to the plate, then we need to create our own municipal broadband. But how do we do that? We can’t force a competitor to come to us. The only tool that I can think of is to bribe the competitor to joining the market. Obviously bribing Verizon and others to service South Florida when AT&T has had it exclusively for years is is not going to fly nicely with their legal teams. As all companies have proven they will fight any type of law or regulation that doesn’t suit them tooth and nail. Making a pact with the devil maybe our undoing. Hell, it got us to where we are now.
