Recórcholis, demonios y maldición son expresiones que nos remontan inmediatamente a un doblaje (cuestionable) de película importada. A esto podemos agregar que:

• Son expresiones rara vez utilizadas en el habla cotidiana.

• El contexto (generalmente emotivo) de su aplicación afecta gravemente la credibilidad de los actores. Esto nos provoca risa (no intencional) antes que el efecto buscado originalmente.

¿A qué se debe?

El llevar una producción cinematográfica a 329 millones de personas de habla hispana seguro no es tarea fácil. Para complicar las cosas aún más, existen más de 50 variedades de español regadas por todo el globo (español mexicano siendo sólo una de estas).

Cada una de estas variedades contiene formas propias; regionalismos, neologismos y malapropismos que reafirman la necesidad de un español neutro, perdiendo así las particularidades que nos permiten identificarnos con lo que escuchamos en pantalla (qué no diera yo por escuchar una buena mentada en vez de un ¡Púdrete!). Es una lástima, lo sé; todo en aras de la inteligibilidad.

Las buenas noticias es que los hispanohablantes no somos la excepción pecadora y para cerrar les dejo un ejemplo de uno de los más espantosos doblajes al inglés; disfrútenlo.

Tym razem płyta tygodnia pewnie mogłaby zostać też płytą miesiąca. Album Score grupy The RAah Project bez trudności pokonałby konkurencję. Dawno nie słyszałem czegoś tak dobrego.

The RAah Project porusza się w luźno pojętej estetyce nu-jazz – luźno, bo mamy tu downtempo, hip-hop, soul i dubowe elementy i jeszcze wiele więcej, ale po co pisać, że na Score słychać IDM?

Utworom często towarzyszy wokal, czasem wspomagany przez chórki, tu i ówdzie usłyszymy big bandowy zgiełk albo orkiestrowe zagrywki wyciągnięte ze ścieżki dźwiękowej do starego Jamesa Bonda, przestrzenne smyczki, drum’n'bassową albo break-beatową motorykę perkusji, jednak najważniejszy w całym tym miszmaszu jest klimat. Panowie z The RAah Project tak umiejętnie sklejają gatunki w całość, że nic ze sobą się nie gryzie.

Zatem co? Mamy następców Jazzanovy, Big Bandu Herberta, Jaga Jazzist, Cinematic Orchestra?

Posłuchajcie co nieco, np. singlowego Will You Be There lub hiciarskiego Covered Up In Stars.

I’ve never been a huge fan of dub music. I can’t tell you why, it’s just never really clicked with me. Therefore I had some serious doubts about reviewing a band like Pama International. After listening to the album Pama Outernational (do you see what they’ve done there?) the dub collective’s latest effort, I was left cold. Like trying to review a book in a foreign language I felt as though I simply couldn’t connect with whatever it was they were trying to say. I knew this was probably my own fault, raised on rock music and only recently a jazz convert, this style of music just wasn’t clicking. However, and this is a big however, after repeated run-throughs, something impressive started to happen. The fact that this was in the dub style started to become less important, and I began to hear the album for what it was, music. There is so much atmosphere in the first few bars of Equality & Justice For All that it comes as no surprise that there are members of The Specials in this band. The funkiness of Are We Saved Yet? is irresistible and the syncopated rhythms of Dub a Disco are as catchy as they are impressive. There are haunting organ sounds and smooth horns all over this record, the latter almost sounding like a ghostly call to arms. Elsewhere on the album there’s some very soulful vocal moments, including the sensitive He’s More Like His Father and the beautiful melody on What You Do Now.

The album ends as it starts with Look Out Your Window blasting the same rousing horns as the opening. This clever touch left me feeling that I’d been on a bit of a journey, this record may not have turned me into a born again dub convert, but it certainly overcame my indifference towards the genre, and forced me to enjoy it on it’s own terms. If you want atmosphere and twisted rhythms that roll gracefully over a sprawling cityscape, Pama Outernational would be it.
