At this year’s 11th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, Buyepongo took part of the dublab’s “Future Roots”stage, curated by DUBLAB as part of their VTech sponsored week-long 10th Anniversary Celebration series around the city of Los Angeles.

The young and energetic cumbia band Buyepongo was a stand out during this free, community street festival. These cats had the block bumping with their vibrant sounds steeped in the tradition of sweat and rhythm but flying into the future through the ears and bodies that bounced in the moment.  Peep this exclusive video and become a fan yourself. Autumn is officially upon us and days are getting darker sooner. No worries for me though, I’ll be out of here in less than 48 hours. So everything is all good in my last days here, especially with my side absolutely demolishing Olympiakos handily yesterday night. Superb display of how the beautiful game is supposed to be played…

Oh, in case you were wondering about Olympiacos chances: there were none really. I have very rarely seen such dominance on Champions League level. Overall, I am very happy the way the season is going. The two losses in Manchester seem to be abberrations in hindsight, especially with the way those games went…let’s see how the season will go. I am really excited about the prospects, though. And if we play like yesterday, I really do not mind if there aren’t any trophies in the end. I am content with playing the most beautiful football out of all sides…

Last but not least, fire from the “Art Don’t Sleep” camp out of L.A. This is a jam session recorded in conjunction with some kind of release promotion for Shafiq Hussayn’s solo debut “Shafiq En A Free Ka”. Sa-Ra in the house, Monch on the mic and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on the violin for this one…

About 4-5 years back Carlos Nino introduced me to Frosty who is the brain behind Dublab.  I had no idea that my relationship would last this long with such a great collective of folks who push forth art, community and music.  I remember when I first did a set spinning nothing but hip hop records not realizing 1) you can play what ever you want and 2) you dont have to mix.  Just play what you love, no right or wrong!

10 years deep in the game and its amazing to see what Frost Dizzy and the fam have accomplished.  This past Saturday it was nice to see so many heads I was yet to meet and others I have not seen in a minute.   Every now and then we do a proton drive in which your financial support helps this indie group / collective keep their projects and their amazing online radio show going strong!

The new Why? album will be here soooooon! And I for one, can’t wait! Last years ‘Alopecia’ album has meant Why? are the most listened to artist on my last.fm chart. And if that wasn’t enough, Themselves also have a new album on the way. There are few artists I count down the days to a new release (or at least the days to a leak – which I believe there’s a Why? one out there), but for these two, I’m close to starting an Anticon Advent Calender.

So anyway, Why? and Themselves have recorded a tune together for an, as yet, unreleased compilation.It’s called Canada:

I caught Why? in Andrews Lane Theatre last year and it was great. My only disappointment was the fact I arrived too late missing Crayonsmith AND getting a shitty standing place. So when Why? was returning to Andrews Lane a few months later, I was well chuffed to win tickets from MP3 Hugger. Only to find out it was the same night as a going away party for a friend in Donegal (who was leaving to live in Spain – but only to return two months later – Thanks Jay!). So, I’m bloody ecstatic at the chance of seeing Why? again, hopefully on tour with the new album. It’s the kinda stuff I wouldn’t expect to be pulled of well live, but oh so wrong. Somehow they got everything in live, perfectly. Just went on a wee trawl for live videos and it’s just reminded me how well they pull it off.

Alopecia was definitely a move to a more accessible sound after the likes of, the also brilliant but somewhat more ‘difficult’, Elephant Eyelash and Sanddollars. But Yoni seems to think the new album will be even more straight forward saying “This record, Eskimo Snow, is really the least hip-hop out of anything I’ve ever been involved with. I mean, they feel like song-songs with– I don’t want to say a typical verse-chorus structure, but they’re song-songs.”

The Blackest Purse is a track of the new album due out in September – and yup, it does seem a bit more ’straight’ but with good ol’Yonis strange a wonderful lyrics and phrasing. I do kinda hope it’s not all this ’striaght’ though I have to say.

Just finished a very interesting dj mix for the guys over @ Dublab as part of giving back to those who have supported, Dublab asked their dee jays and friends for selections to be part of a mix that will be released to those who donated during the proton drive.  Im talking some very rare + obscure stuff.  Myself and Kutmah are on the vinyl release each doing a mix on each side.   According to Frosty, the entire mix will be released in its entirety to the gp! Alright people, it’s Friday.
Let’s get casual.
Here’s the deal:
I’ve been racking my brain all day over what I should blog about for my superabundant audience to keep you guys titillated and entertained but then I was distracted by a nine year old Jewish American Princess telling me I should give up the dream & get married. Also that the reason I am not married is because I don’t wear Juicy suits. Apparently, in this neighborhood, twenty three is really fucking old. And it depressed me more than not being interested in ever seeing Twilight and not being able to date Nick Jonas combined.

And so, to battle this parade of doldrums, I have decided to chronicle what was awesome this week.

I guess it’s like Best Week Ever… only it’s not on VH1, it’s on WordPress and Doug Benson is not going to make hilarious jokes about how my friend Justin looks exactly like the older brother who turns into a vampire in the documentary Twilight is based on, The Lost Boys.

10. Trying to get Ned Hepburn to take me to Nicole Richie’s fashion show by name dropping Richie Panic on Twitter.
I failed miserably. Not even an @reply. But it gave me and Richie a laugh.

Anyway, this has spurned a new crush on Ned Hepburn for a couple reasons.
1. Boner Party. Enough said.
2. He has Robin Hood (as in the Disney fox [double entendre!]) in his profile pictures on Facebook.

YUMMM ! I was lucky enough to spend some time with Joey from Rumspringa at Elf in Echo Park. It was so good I convinced not only the lady next to me to order it but also convinced the waitress that she needed to eat it again. I wish I could accurately display my unbridled enthusiasm via blogs but it’s hard without just looking like I’m yelling.

Every Friday, my partner in coquettish crimes in the city, Esme Wright, and myself hit up the Hyperion Tavern for an esthetically pleasing & entertaining evening with Calling All Kids. With resident DJs Sodapop (anitcon) and Matthewdavid (dublab) and zany visual mind explosion inducers, it’s a guaranteed fun time for all. Kind of like that benefit for Mr. Kite. Sans post mop-tops.

Saw them last night with Kárin (we’ll get there) at The Echo. These cats are doing something I’ve never seen nor heard really… I can’t really explain it but I can tell you it’s got me pelvic thrustin’ like I’m getting paid for it (new catch phrase, holler). Not only are they just jammin’ anyway, but last night they really won my heart by covering “Sabotage”. Yeah, as in the Beastie Boys song. Talk about sparkling with personality. LISTEN. NOW. PLZ. Holy hell, this girl is out of control amazing town. She seriously brought me near tears last night during her performance PLUS totally had my loins tingling with her fancy fabulous sequin get up. If you do not take this suggestion to check her out, you basically are saying you have no taste. So, just do as I say or be condemned as chintzy quack of music loving. PRONTO. HERE. NOW.

This guy may not be blowing up in your face right now. . but by the looks of thing’s he’s certainly on the slow burn.
