It was a lovely day yesterday, and I took the opportunity to pay a second visit to the relaunched Brownhills Market on my way out for a ride in the early autumn warmth. I was pleased to see that the market appears to be bedding in, and was indeed expanded and busier, even at 2:00pm when I visited, quite late in the day. There was only one empty pitch, and the clothes stalls seem to be returning.

Swinging out up Silver Street, I noted a fun day in progress at the Canoe and Outdoor centre, so popped in to take a look – there was a busy little bric-a-brac fete with food and games, and a plastic duck race was taking place. I didn’t actually get to see how that worked on the generally millpond-like canal, but all concerned seemed to be having fun…

Followed by a spin up to Hoar Cross and Tatenhill, it was an enjoyable ride with only an unusually large quantity of idiot driving to detract from the day. Cracking stuff!

Syracuse, NY — The semester my only class on Friday is New 617, Advanced News Reporting and Writing with Professor Bob Lloyd. It started at 8:20 a.m.

On the first day of class we spent an hour and a half making introductions and going over the syllabus. Just as everything was going so smooth, professor Lloyd and Gutterman dropped the bomb on us.

Our first assignment was to leave class and spend the rest of the day at the Great New York State Fair reporting on three different stories of our choice. The stories were due the next day at 12 p.m. I decided to write about a lemonade stand worker, a chainsaw carver and the duck race.

It was a long, hot day but a lot of fun. Here are some pictures:

Yesterday, the music dept held a “duck race” at a students family farm. The actual duck

Yesterday, the music dept held a “duck race” at a students family farm. The actual duck race consisted of putting 200 plastic ducks into a river and seeing which would get to the end first! Seriously. You don’t get much more fun than this!

It being a music event, there were also performances from certain students; including the folk ensemble “Folk on Fire”, a duet from from Gemma and Danny, and the A Level students performed two songs together. We, being the A Level students, played “Fly me to the moon” first. Our arrangement of it consists of a slow opening of the first verse with only piano (played by me) and Harriet singing. That is followed by an instrumental with drums (Alex), piano (still me), bass guitar (Lucie- not A Level, but the actual A Level bassist didn’t attend the event) and clarinet (James). Its quite a good piece and I love it! Our second song was the Britney Spears “classic” “Gimme More”. In this, Hariet played guitar and sings the main melody, James took over on the bass, Alex played the djembe and I sang backing harmonies. This is our acoustic “unplugged” version. And it was also our final EVER performance together! Sad times, really. I’m going to miss these guys so much.

Although, the highlight of the evening for me was definately the crazy quirky things that happened throughout the day. A member of staff wandering round with an advert for Jacket potatoes taped to her back (and yes she knew). Setting up the 2 gazebos (one for music, the other for food) and being paid in cans of coke! Taking my shoes off and then wandering up to the house with bare feet (there were lots of stones! Ouch!). And getting a free jacket potato with chilli on it. Its all about free food, people!

But most importantly. This evening was about saying goodbye to my time in sixth form and mainly to the music department that I have practically lived in for the past 2 years. I’m going to miss them.

Today we had our annual duck race on the river running through the millfields near Stony Stratford.

Today we had our annual duck race on the river running through the millfields near Stony Stratford. Not real feathered ducks (though there were some about, willing to be fed) but the yellow plastic variety. The wind was against us this year, so the ducks didn’t go very far along the river. Eventually a duck was fished out with a net and declared the winner. The person who had ‘bought’ the duck promptly donated her winnings to the Organ fund.

This was one of those nice little unexpected happenings which is characteristic of people at our church (and probably at many others). It wasn’t a large sum of money – the amount didn’t matter, but as the event wasn’t in aid of the organ fund (traditionally our young Christians do a Lent fundraiser stall and duck race on the same Saturday for a designated charity) I wasn’t expecting the organ fund to benefit at all. Lots of small amounts of cash have quietly been building up the organ fund for the past 2 – 3 years, it sometimes seems like we are getting nowhere, but then when we add it all up, we feel as if we are making progress, which is really heartening, and is most definitely thanks to all those people who steadily make contributions at the various events we hold in our Parish. So thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, and to all those who feel moved to support the organ in the future.

Achja richtig, Phillip Island.

Blick vom Balkon am Australia Day

Melbourne vom Eureka Tower, hallo Reflektionen

Australia Day

Duck Race, schon weit fortgeschritten

Feuerwerk Australia Day - Links Eureka Tower, rechts Fed Square

Dafür bekommt man in der Day Session drei Spiele.

Ok so I didn’t come up with that. I read it in a tourist brochure But seriously, this town is awesome. We stumbled upon the fact that this weekend is Bright’s food and wine festival…

So around dinner time we headed down to the river to watch the great Australian duck race to hopefully find that we’d won a sh*t load of money to help us get to Thailand later this year .Sadly we didn’t. Our duck was probably one of those facing the back of the pack! But what we found was…people everywhere! Not just a river full of rubber duckies but also a river bank full of tents set up by local wineries who made sure the wine floweth forth. Not to mention all the food, and a stage with live music. We ended up staying fairly late (well, considering we have an almost 1 year old). Ran into lots of locals, had chats, watched Kaden try to dance and use his massive lungs to sing… all is good in Bright.

My family went to the Oregon State Fair yesterday. It was my first visit to the fair. I wasn’t

My family went to the Oregon State Fair yesterday. It was my first visit to the fair. I wasn’t really impressed by the way the traffic flowed into the fair. You would think that for a state fair, there would be some form of guidance into the it, by the police or some other form. The Clark County Fair, has the state patrol and county deputies helping to direct the traffic into and out of the fair. Once we were able to get onto the Fair’s blue gate parking area, we were directed by the flow of parking to another parking area, the pink parking area, on the other side of the fair.

At the fair we first went to the dog show arena. My mother in law is involved in the 4-h with Josephine County. My daughter really enjoys looking at the dogs and animals. After lunch, we went over to the Great American Duck Race, were Abby and I raced a duck. While we were just given our duck to race, my duck wanted to get away from me, in doing so, I must have squeezed the pooh out of it and onto my shirt. I didn’t know that I had any poop on me until my wife seen it, just before I was about give her a kiss after the race. Anyway, Abby had a lot of fun, our duck came into 2nd place.

After the race we caught the end of a children show with Chinese Circus, kids mind you, doing amazing things, from bending, flipping, climbing a banner like a rope and doing wonderful tricks with it while climbing and falling. I would post pictures, but we were not allowed to take any.

We ended up spending the whole day looking at different things from shows, to art work done by kids in 4-h. Some of the things that some of these kids did were amazing, like welding from scratch working haduralic dumping beds to animal feeders.

To really see all that this fair had to offer I needed to have at least 2 days to visit it.

First I have to get the two bad things about today’s trip to the Das Fest out of my system, then we can go back to the fun.

So, bad thing number one. The man at the entrance stole my water!! As far as I was aware people are allowed to take their own water in on Sunday morning for the breakfast. According to this man no drinking water is allowed in at any time. You have to buy it there. I wouldn’t mind buying it there so much, but they only sell fizzy stuff and I hate, hate, hate the taste of carbon dioxide. Extremely sulkily I watched as he threw my water bottle in the bin. Then when we got in I saw at least 3 people with bottles of water much bigger than mine. I know for a fact those bottles weren’t bought at the Fest becasue a) they don’t see big bottles and b) even if they did sell big bottles they certainly wouldn’t sell Vittel. Taking my water away was just plain mean!

Bad thing number two. I had to use a port-a-loo. I’m now officially traumatised. AT least it was still fairly early (around 12:30pm) so it was clean and had toilet roll, but still. It was horrible. For one thing it was on a slope so the whole time I was in there I felt like it was about to tip over. Then there was the fact that the door was sooo hard to shut, which made me wonder whether I’d ever get it open again. The thought of being trapped in a port-a-loo for ages is not pleasant! But I survived, I managed to do what I went in for without actually touching the toilet (eeew!) and the door did open again when I wanted to come out. Still traumatised though!

Now back to the fun. The day started with the classic breakfast… everyone brings along something to eat and has a picnic on the grass while an orchestra plays classical music on the stage. A nice experience, although the lack of shade in front of the stage is sooo not good for me. I’m now sunburnt despite making use of the free suncream DM were giving out. And I used the highest sun protection factor. Curse my pale skin!
After breakfast we headed down to the river to see the duck race. This year 7,000 people bought a duck (or rather a ticket to represent a duck). Seven thousand ducks floating down the river looks brilliant! If you ever get a chance to see a rubber duck race definitely do. Neither of our ducks was among the first 25 to reach the end, so we didn’t get a prize. But we do still have a chance… the fasted 200 ducks win something, but only the first 25 prizes are handed out then and there. Tomorrow a list will appear on the internet so I can see whether we’ve won one of the smaller prizes. And if not, well it’s all for charity.

Once the duck race was over we headed back towards the main stage via a tap in the ground that we had spotted on the way down to the finish line. The tap produces drinking water, so I refilled the bottles of fizzy water that Jan had bought during breakfast. There’s no way I haven’t drunk enough water today!
Back at the main stage a band called Soundnugget were playing. The name has been bugging me all week. I knew I’d heard it somewhere before but couldn’t think where. The answer came to me yesterday… I read it all the time on one of the posters down in our bar. They played at one of our residence parties a few years ago. I missed them the year they played here, but today at the Fest I got to hear them and they’re actually pretty good. Young lads, in their early to mid 20s. They sing in English and are very enthusiastic.
The band who came on next we weren’t really bothered about seeing, and Jan wanted pizza, so we wandered off towards the so-called “sportpark”, bought pizza and went in search of the freestyle frisbee show. We found a few people doing stuff with frisbees, but nothing that looked like an official show so after watching some skateboarders doing tricks and stopping for a while to watch some random sport involving people juggling skittle shaped things on a volleyball court, the idea being that each person had 2 white ones while an orange one was passed from person to person, we headed back towards the main area. DM had a little tent where you could print out 5 photos from your camera for free so we took advantage of that before heading back to my place. Now Jan has gone home and I’m drinking gallons and gallons of water and praying that the sunburn isn’t a sign I’m going to be ill later. I get sunstroke soooo easily and I have to work tomorrow…

It’s the weekend of Das Fest here in Karlsruhe, as I’ve mentioned.. ooh, I don’t know how many times over the last few days. For those who don’t know (and actually care), Das Fest is the biggest free open air music festival in Europe (I believe). Not the biggest festival, obviously, but the biggest one that costs absolutely nothing to get in. Occasionally they have big name bands/singers there, mostly before they become big names but there are some that play Das Fest even after they’ve become famous (the first band I ever saw at Das Fest was Jethro Tull by the way… back in 2004). Apart from the music there are various other things going on, including activities and entertainment for kids, a beach volleyball tournament and a freestyle frisbee show (where people do things like throw frisbees up in the air and roll them down their arms).

So last night we went along to Das Fest to see German band Sportfreunde Stiller play. I quite like Sportfreunde Stiller, despite the fact that they don’t actually sing that well. They’re fun though and, as mentioned yesterday, brilliant for people learning the language. They were the first German band whose lyrics I could actually understand without looking them up. They put on a good show last night, made people laugh, had the crowd dancing and I was very pleased that I could sing along with almost all the songs they played. YAY. Personally I thought they were much better than the band who played before them, Revolverhead. Revolverhead released a song for this year’s European Cup which was quite frankly terrible!

This morning we met up with some other people from my student residence (and some who used to live here) for breakfast at Cae Emaille. The food at Emaille isn’t brilliant, but it’s a student friendly place where everything’s cheap (and it at least tastes better than the so-called “Mensa” (canteen) at the university). After breakfast Jan and I went to buy some rubber ducks. No, not real ones!
Tomorrow at Das Fest there’s a rubber duck race along the Alb, the little river that runs through the park. The money raised goes to SMA Deutschland e.V, a charity that helps children with muscular atrophy. So even if you don’t win it’s worth taking part. And for those who do win there are some pretty good prizes, including a hot air balloon trip for two, a Canon printer and a football signed by KSC, the local football team (who are actually quite good and have made it into the top division).

Tomorrow it’s off to Das Fest again for the classic breakfast (bring your own breakfast and have a picnic in front of the main stage while an orchestra plays classical music) and the duck race. We decided not to go this evening because it started chucking it down and neither of us is particularly interested in Fettes Brot or KT Tunstall (who I’ve just discovered spells herself KT… and I’ve been calling her Katy all week. I’m sure if she ever discovers my blog I’ll be devastated!)

And now I shall leave you. I think I’ve rambled on for long enough!

Has spring really sprung this time. The TV is forecasting a high of 23 for Monday, which we will believe when we see it.

There are still some big snow drifts around here, but at least there is some hope. The main areas are almost free of snow and the water is drying up quickly. It will however be a little while before the campground roads are open. The pool has some open water starting to appear. I have a feeling before we know it camping season will be in full swing.

This upcoming Sunday is the annual Duck Derby in Balmoral. It is a fundraiser for the hall. We will finally be able to actually make it up their to check it out. The past two years we have always been busy with work and construction around here. It is also a week earlier this year. Apparently they dump 200 ducks into the creek and they ‘race’ to the end. There is also some activities and lunch in the hall. The Oak Hammock Marsh duck mascot will be around and I believe the marsh will have some other demos and displays set up. The weather is supposed to be nice and should be a fun afternoon.
