Utah Lake dominates Utah Valley in north-central Utah, with major cities such as Provo and Orem hemmed between the lake’s eastern shore and the Wasatch Mountains. West of the lake are the Lake Mountains and jutting into the south portion of the lake is West Mountain, which divides Goshen Bay and Lincoln Beach. Connected to the main body of the lake are two large, shallow bays: the aforementioned Goshen Bay to the south and Provo Bay to the east, where Hobble Creek enters the lake.

Despite its large surface area, the lake is shallow; it has a maximum depth of 18 feet (4.27 m) and an average depth of about 9.4 feet (2.74 m). This shallowness allows winds to easily stir up sediments from the lake’s bottom, contributing to the turbidity seen in Utah Lake’s water.

Major tributaries include the Provo River, Spanish Fork, and American Fork rivers, as well as Hobble, Mill Race, and Currant creeks. Additionally, there are many hot springs and smaller creeks flowing into the lake. Utah Lake is drained by the Jordan River, which begins at the lake’s north end, where a pumping station has been created to regulate its flow. It then flows north through Utah and Salt Lake counties into the southeast portion of Great Salt Lake.

Police have arrested the Toronto Humane Society’s president, chief veterinarian and three other senior staff members and charged them with animal cruelty, six months after a Globe and Mail investigation revealed widespread troubles at the shelter.

At the same time, the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals executed a search warrant at the shelter’s River Street facility late Thursday afternoon.

Christopher Avery, a Bay Street criminal lawyer representing the OSPCA, said Mr. Trow’s own dog, Bandit, attacked a police officer during the arrest on Thursday. It was pepper sprayed.

He also outlined the poor conditions of a number of animals.

“[OSPCA] officer [Kevin] Strooband recalled one animal in particular. He came in and lifted a cat and its skin came off in his hands,” Mr. Avery told reporters outside the THS building.

“We are in the process of going cage by cage, animal by animal throughout the facility and comparing those with veterinary records, and we’re doing our utmost to determine whether or not further charges should be laid by the end of the weekend.”

Eu ouvi essa track num mixset dos caras do Database e adorei a composição, quando fui procurar a track, ela já era um pouco antiga, só peço para repararem na pegada disco do começo, e que ela lembra demais, outras musicas do naipe do Shazam. A ausencia dos vocais também deixou a musica mais emocionante, ja que o bpm foi acelerado nesse remix.

Cassius como sempre, cria suas tracks para o bem do mundo, com suas inovadoras tecnicas de agradar o publico criou uma track que acho eu, é reconhecida muito pouca na comunidade french mu-si-que.
Falcon, conhecido no mundo french por tocar ao lado de Thomas Bangalter (da Duo Daft Punk), fez oque ja era bom ficar melhor, em seu remix é possivel constar uma imensidão de loops, e um style q lembra bem a pegada french

I couldn’t possibly do Languedoc month without talking about the wine.  There is as much, if not more, acreage in the Languedoc devoted to the growing of grapes and production of wine as in Bordeaux.  Some of my very favorite French wines are from the Languedoc, including Fitou (rare, but if you find a bottle, pick it up, you won’t be sorry), Corbières, and Minervois.  The wines of the region generally use a similar blend of grapes as is used in the Rhône valley, heavy on the Syrah, Mouvèdre, Carignane, and Grenache.  The reds are fruity yet bold, with enough structure to make them worth lingering over, and usually very food-friendly, as well.  The best part?  They’re also some of the least expensive French wines!  Chalk it up to a lack of name recognition, but you really get a lot of bang for your buck when buying wines from the Languedoc.

Another important product of the Languedoc is rice.  The majority of rice grown in France is along the coast of the Languedoc, particularly in the marshy Camargue near the Rhône river delta.  Camargue is also an important source of France’s salt.

I usually use sel gros de Camargue in my cooking, its crystals being roughly the same size as Kosher salt.  It is slightly moist though, which gives me a feeling of indulgence – the stuff feels a lot more expensive than it is (around 1 euro a kilo).  Of course, where there’s salt, there’s fleur de sel.

Fleur de sel is the crunchy, extra-white “flowers” that form on the top of the regular sea salt crystals under the right conditions.  It’s a great finishing salt – try sprinkling it over a steak or salad just before serving, or even on bread with butter if you don’t have the butter with the salt crystals built in.

And now for an update on the duck confit.  Last week, I rinsed and dried the duck legs while I melted all the duck fat in the house.  There was a minor duck fat-related tragedy when I opened one of my three (!) jars and discovered that mold had sprouted inside.  I set it aside, and to make up for the missing fat – I wanted to make sure the legs would be amply covered in fat as they cooked – I added a bit of lard.  The smell of the garlicky duck as the confit did its thing for three hours was insanely good.  I can’t imagine why anyone would want to make one giant batch of this to save all winter – I wouldn’t mind filling my house with that smell every month.  Or every week, for that matter.

Now the confit, legs, fat, and all, is resting in the bottom of my fridge, waiting for the Thanksgiving hoopla to be over so I can turn it into cassoulet.

Juego de logica, una serie de problemas que tendras que resolver, con patos como tablero

Pour son second album IRM, Charlotte Gainsbourg a demandé à l’incroyable, mais malheureusement scientologue, Beck de lui écrire un album. Le résultat sera audible le 7 décembre prochain.
En attendant, la fille de et de nous fait patienter avec un titre éponyme à l’opus, téléchargeable gratuitement sur son site officiel (ici) ou avec le clip génial de son single  Heaven Can Wait signé par l’excellent Keith Schofield. Réalisateur américain, il a fait ses preuves avec une publicité détournée pour Diesel où des scènes de pornos sont maquillées par des dessins animés où les protagonistes font de la musique au lieu de leur activité habituelle (Ici). Il a aussi fait le clip Ladyhawke pour CSS ou Bad Blood pour Supergrass. Après s’être entourée par le gratin pop pour son premier opus 5:55 (les versaillais de Air, Jarvis Cocker de Pulp et Neil Hannon de The Divine Comedy), elle fait appel à Beck connu pour ses bidouillages car suite à ses problèmes médicaux en septembre 2007, Charlotte Gainsbourg garde les sonorités de machines respiratoires, des scanners et compagnie en tête et veut les utiliser pour sa musique. Dix huit mois de travail pour la composition de l’album, IRM semble être éclectique, pensé et très travaillé. Des suppositions qui pourront être vérifiées le 7 décembre 2009 pour la sortie de l’album (le même jour que la sortie de l’EP Hotel Utah de The Rodeo).

Le clip fonctionne sur des scènes du quotidien où Charlotte Gainsbourg cohabite avec des mutants, des robots ou des êtres étranges. Une photo magnifique, une mise en scène exquise, un clip à découvrir de toute urgence. En décembre en attendant la suite (une impression de “déjà-vu” non ?)

The purpose of this post is to illustrate one of my favorite new restaurants. I was introduced to Wurstküche this weekend by my girlfriend. Situated in the Artist’s District of Los Angeles, this Belgian style eatery is the perfect place to enjoy two of man’s greatest vices: Beer and meat (specifically, Belgian Ale and sausage.)

I had no idea what to expect when my girlfriend took me here. She basically just said, “Get in the car, we’re going out to dinner at this place in LA.” In I went.

When I walked in, there was quite a line; and after taking a look at the selection, I know why:

Heaven.

As you can tell, they don’t fuck around.

M’lady ordered the rattlesnake, rabbit and jalapeno sausage. I wasn’t as brave. I kept it real and got a familiar favorite (Bratwurst.) Although I was enticed by the Spicy Louisiana, and the Alligator & Pork. Some recommendations I got from the locals were the Bacon and Duck with Jalapeno and the Buffalo, Veal and Pork. Also, this place has a pretty awesome vegetarian selection for those who are against “cruelty to animals” or whatever.

As you can tell, it’s exotic and incredible.

What’s better, is the Klein or Groot (small Belgian fries or large Belgian fries.) They’re basically thick-cut skin-on french fries with sea salt, but what makes them amazing is that you’re eating them with a choice selection of incredible German, Belgian and American lagers and ales… And they come with your choice of any two (2) dipping sauces. Some favorites of mine include: Bleu Cheese Walnut & Bacon, Curry Ketchup, Pesto Mayo and Chipotle Aoili (they also have Thai Peanut, Tzatziki, Sundried Tomato Mayo and Sweet and Sassy BBQ.) Fucking amazing.

They also have a live DJ spinning til midnight. The whole place closes around 1am, so you still have time to hit the liquor store afterward for some beer if you wish to continue the party. I should also mention that the sausages are covered in caramelized onions, sauerkraut (duh), and sweet or spicy peppers (go sweet.) Also, if you’re mustard connoisseur like myself, they have: Spicy, Whole grain, Dijon, Spicy Brown, Honey Mustard or American Yellow (American Yellow… I usually go Spicy Brown, but I just wasn’t feeling it.)

The best part of the meal is this right here:

Bier.

Yeah, there’s a lot on tap. The more modern man (see: the baller) might opt for a limited release Schneider Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse (8.2% ABV 500mL) for $11, or the frugal college guy (see: myself) can get down with a good, old fashioned PBR for $2.50. No matter what it is you order – you win.

Write it down.

Take your girl. Take your boys.

I should also mention: I don’t do food reviews on this blog. Unless, of course, it’s bizarre or obscure (see: Rolled Pig’s Face; Meat Hand.) But I made an exception for this place because it was so fucking awesome. Go there. Now. Enjoy it. Thank yourself.

Duck’s phase model and Lee’s stage model both can be used to identify the stages of breakdown in a relationship and suggest appropriate ways to attempt to repair the relationship. Duck focuses mostly on the process after the initial point of breakdown within the relationships whereas Lee focuses mainly on the various processes involved when there is still hope that the relationship can be salvaged.

Duck’s 1982 phase model gives four stages in the dissolution of a relationship. He claims that the first stage in the breakdown of a relationship is the Intrapsychic phase in which one or both of the partners begin to consider the problems that exist within the relationship, but at this stage, they do not speak out about these perceived problems. The second stage is the Dyadic phase when the troubled partner confronts their partner and tries to correct these problems; this stage can involve the assistance of a marriage counsellor to help resolve any issues contributing to this dissolution. In the Social stage the decision is made by one or both partners to leave the relationship, both partners are likely to discuss the relationship openly with their peers. They will each have their own version of any key events or points that contribute to the problems with the relationship and will gain assistance and advice from others they have spoken to. The final stage in Duck’s phase model is the Grave Dressing phase, in this stage each of them go through self-justification when they form their own version of events and the reason behind the breakup. This stage is especially important for when they intend to move on to new relationship as they protect their own egos to prepare themselves for a new partner. Duck claims there are two possible factors that contribute to the breakdowns of relationships: predisposing personal factors such as distasteful personal habits and precipitating factors such as the presence of a rival within the relationship or the nature of the relationship becoming one that is not viable for a future, conflict between partners, an attractive alternative relationship and conflict between partners can play important parts in the intrapsychic stage. A strength of this model is that it gives some insight into possible effective techniques to enable one to be able to repair the relationship as issues within the relationship becomes apparent to at least one person during the intrapsychic and they can try and focus on the positive aspects rather than the negative ones and the dyadic phase allows the couple to work through their problems and possibly fix or improve these in order to allow the relationship to be saved through discussion with or without the aid of an experienced marriage counsellor. This is supported by Duck’s 1991 study where he found that a lack of skills such as social skills can lead to dissatisfaction within the relationship as it leads to  poor conversation, and this could be corrected during the dyadic phase of the model by improving communication. However a limitation of this model is that Brehm and Kassin 1996 claimed that women are more likely to stress unhappiness and incompatibility as reasons for dissolution of a relationship where as men are especially upset by sexual withholding, suggesting that the factors that affect the dissolution of a relationship could be different for each partner due to their gender and Duck’s model could be more applicable to the way women experience the breakups. In 2006 Duck and Rollie added a fifth stage to the model by introducing the Resurrection Phase in which the individuals evaluate the relationship and rephrase it setting out how things could be different and attempting to re-instigate the relationship again. This further stage also supports the manner in which this model allows for a relationship to be rekindled and fixed whether it be before the complete dissolution of the relationship or afterwards. However there are some ethical limitations to this model as the research carried out by Duck and later Rollie will have meant carrying out research into sensitive areas of people’s personal lives such as issues of vulnerability, possibly leading to distress in the participants and it could also cause privacy and confidentiality problems in cases involving issues such as abuse. A strength of Duck’s model is that it suggests way in which a individual may deal with the end of a relationship in order to begin a new one. This is also covered in Lee’s stage model.

Lee’s Stage Model included five stages of dissolution. The first, dissatisfaction, shows that first one or both individuals must recognise that there are real problems in their relationship. Next these problems must be brought into the open during the exposure stage and then in the negotiation stage these issues are discussed and will try to aim for the resolution stage where both parties will try to find ways in which to fix the relationship by solving the problems. If the negotiation and attempt to find resolution fails then the couple moves into the termination stage where the relationship is brought to a close. Lee devised this model after surveying 100 post break up individuals who had been in premarital romantic relationships. Controversially he found that the exposure and negotiating stages where the most emotionally stressful stages rather than the more obvious termination stage as by the time the relationship hits the termination stage both parties have realised that the relationship has no future. As in Duck’s model a strength of Lee’s stage model is that it puts emphasis on the early dissolution stages, allowing the couple to identify problems and deal with them without going straight to termination the relationship, this model focuses on this process more than Duck’s phase model however Lee does not outline the manner the couple deal with the aftermath of the relationship post dissolution in the manner Duck does. Another strength is that this model is not purely theoretical as Lee’s research used the experiences of real relationship dissolutions however that is a limitation to this manner of carrying out research with surveys and interviews in that post dissolution of a romantic relationship one or both parties have a warped sense of the reality behind the break up and will remember the process of the dissolution in a different way to the reality of the situation as Duck explains in his model, during the Grave Dressing Phase the partners will put their own spin on the events in order to protect their own egos and the findings of Lee do not take this into consideration. Furthermore, by only using premarital romantic relationships Lee has created a model that cannot be generalised and lacks population basis and also doesn’t consider individual differences and individual cases in which all these stages will not occur, such as sudden dissolutions of relationship when, for example, a spouse leaves their partner by simply moving out without having any of the exposure, negotiation or resolution stages. A big limitation of both models is that neither of them explains why a relationship will begin these stages of dissolution in the first place, they only explain the likely process once the sequence has begun.

“Duck Soup” es como muchos sabéis una de las mejores películas de los célebres Hermanos Marx. Nunca he sido una persona lo que se dice original, de hecho, he tardado más de dos horas en dar con un título para el blog. No quería poner nada demasiado evidente, ni llamativo, ni malsonante ni…raro. En mi desesperación por dar con el nombre perfecto hasta he descubierto en Google que la gente escribe artículos sobre “Cómo poner un nombre a tu blog”… y a mi ni siquiera se me había ocurrido que pudiera haber artículos sobre el tema. La cuestión es que pensando y pensando he decidido que Sopa de Ganso podía ser el nombre ideal por muchas cosas. Primero porque soy fan de los Marx; segundo, porque Duck Soup -además de sopa de ganso- es una expresión hecha que quiere decir “Fácil de hacer” y, sinceramente, no concibo la idea de un blog como algo complejo, sino como una especie de plaza abierta en la que opinemos juntos sobre algo… y tercero… porque me gustaba.

Así que aquí tenéis Sopa De Ganso, un blog sobre TODO, en especial medios. Cine, televisión, prensa, redes, curiosidades y actualidad. Todo y todos tenéis cabida aquí para opinar de lo que sea. Incluso si os comprais zapatos nuevos.

This is one of those restaurants that I have been wanting to dine at for quite some time. I finally had the opportunity this past Friday night. We were seated immediately at a nice table for two on the bottom floor of the restaurant. The design of the restaurant is really modern and chic. The restaurant was well lit which is something I really liked because usually you go and it’s really dark inside. A.O.C. is largely known for their wine selection and their small plates. The portions are small, but not as small as a tapas bar.

As soon as we sat down we were served a basket of bread with a tapenade and asked if we wanted still, sparkling, or tap water. I also ordered a glass of their Riesling, which if any of you know me is not something I ordinarily do. Drink wine that is. However, I am trying to open my mind up to wines because I believe I am missing out on a lot, especially when it comes to pairing wine with food. Turns out that Riesling was really good.

For our first dish, we ordered Young Broccoli with garlic and chili. The broccoli was cooked really well and the garlic and chili gave it a really nice kick. It wasn’t really spicy but it definitely had some heat. The portion was a bit small for the price but it’s what you expect from dining at a place like this.

For our second plate we had the brioche with prosciutto, gruyère and egg. This was probably my favorite dish of the night. I could have eaten the whole thing, but that would have been rude. The brioche was nice and warm fresh out of the oven with the melted gruyère. Then they top it with prosciutto and a fried egg and serve it wit some greens. The egg was cooked really well, the yolk was runny but not too runny. This really would make a great breakfast. Each part of the dish tasted great on its own, but when combined it was a really great mix of flavors.

For our third and fourth plates we had the arroz negro with squid and saffron aïoli and the scallops, sunchokes, pancetta and truffle butter. We got so caught up with the arroz negro that I forgot to photograph the second dish. To be honest, this was the most visually unappealing dish I have ever eaten. I mean really, if you saw this, would you wanna eat it? Well, I did and it actually wasn’t even half has bad as it looked. It was actually pretty decent. The rice is black because they use squid ink. It gives the dish a little tanginess. I am not sure I would order this a second time but I definitely wanted to give it a try. As for the Scallops, that dish was also just alright. I didn’t think it was anything out of this world. Maybe thats another reason I didn’t get a picture of it.

The duck confit and shell bean stew with ham hock was another of our favorites that night. It was cooked and seasoned really well, served hot in an iron skillet. The shell bean strew consisted of a couple different beans, carrots, and brussel sprouts. The duck had lots of flavor and was really tender. This was a rebound after the past two dishes.

One of our desserts was the banana choux à la crème with toffee and bittersweet chocolate. I really enjoyed this dessert. I think it speaks for itself, but if you have a sweet tooth this really will satisfy it.

Our second dessert was the warm pink lady apple crostata with caramel and vanilla ice cream. Is this something you can probably get at any ordinary restaurant, yes. But the quality of ingredients and the skill that went into making the crostata and the home made ice cream is something you can’t get. The homey flavors of apples and cinnamon all baked together and served warm was a really nice way to finish the meal.

Overall I think this restaurant has a lot of great possibilities but the dishes from that night seemed to be hit or miss. There was nothing I ate that I was not happy with but some of the things were just ok. When comparing A.O.C. to Suzanne Goin’s other restaurant Lucques, I would have to go with the latter. There’s a reason she won a James Beard award in 2006 for it.

you’ve gotta love when bands are doing home movie stuff to get more money out of their fans and they have to try to be funny. some bands are successful. avenged sevenfold was not.

I scanned around the stations this morning, listened to a little talk radio, the snippets of a couple of songs.  The topic in the backseat was Christmas lists.  I’d advised them that with Thanksgiving upon us, they really needed to get a FINALIZED letter in to Santa.

Finalized, of course, because they are chronic mind-changers and it causes Mrs. Santa much stress every single year.

Sometimes I wish I hadn’t asked.  Do you ever feel that way?  My youngest is adamant.  He wants a duck.  Yes, as in quack.  He wants to name it “Mr. Crackers”  Naturally, I asked if he meant Mr. Quackers, but no, he said “Crackers like you eat.”  So there we are. <sigh>

My 8 year old wants a Lincoln Continental, circa 1987.  There’s and elderly lady that we see at the school drop off every day who putters around in one and the boy is smitten.  He says he likes that it goes “really slow” and I did not have the heart to tell him that it goes slow not because of some special engineering, but because a 90 year old woman drives it.

Anyway, we did happen across a radio interview with Charlie Pride, Jr. (neato!) and got a little Scruggs and Flatt.  Normally I like Mississippi Queen, but I passed her over this morning in favor of John Cougar Mellencamp and then Van Morrison.  It was just that sort of vibe this morning.
