No, not the TV show. Do you remember the DuckTales video game released on the original Nintend

No, not the TV show. Do you remember the DuckTales video game released on the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)? In the second of my series on retro games, I’m going to take you on a treasure-collecting journey with Scrooge McDuck around the world (and beyond). So grab your cane and top hat and hit the link below!

DuckTales, like Adventures in the Magic Kingdom, was produced by Capcom. It was released in North America in 1989 (with a version on the Game Boy coming in the following year). The game features many of the characters from the cartoon series, including Scrooge McDuck (the character you control), his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, Launchpad McQuack, Magica De Spell, the Beagle Boys, and more.

Scrooge is on a mission to collect treasure to become the richest duck in the world, a mission that will take him to the Amazon, Transylvania, the African Mines, the Himalayas, and the moon. Scrooge is equipped with his cane that also functions as a weapon and a pogo stick, allowing you to kill enemies by jumping on them pogo-style.

While you are able to choose what order you would like to play the levels, you may need to find objects in one level to gain access to areas in another level. For example, you can’t play the African Mines without finding a key in Transylvania (shown in the screenshot above). Also, don’t be afraid to do some searching for hidden treasures. You are trying to become the world’s richest duck, after all (and you’ll get a small reward for doing so)! Keep your eyes peeled for a golden ring and a golden mirror.

I said before that Scrooge’s cane has more uses than serving as a walking stick. You can swing it to hit and move objects, and use it as a weapon. To swing your cane, press the B button when up against an object. To use it as a pogo stick and bounce on enemies (shown above), you have to jump (A button), then press down and the B button. Sounds complicated, but you get used to it pretty quickly. You can continuously bounce also, which can help you make a series of jumps or get out of an area crowded with enemies.

If you get hit by enemies, though, be on the lookout for powerups scattered throughout the levels. Ice cream cones replenish one point in the stamina meter, cake completely refills your stamina, Magic Coins make Scrooge temporarily invincible, Stamina Extenders (these look like stars) give you more stamina, and Scrooge dolls give you an extra life. You’ll also get a plethora of diamonds, so collect these to increase your dollar value.

When you get to the end of each level, you’ll face a boss that is guarding that level’s treasure (the screenshot above shows you the boss in the Amazon). You can go back to a level after beating it to find other treasures in that level, adding to the game’s non-linear gameplay. Once you beat all five bosses, you’ll have one final boss to face in Transylvania. Beat the final boss and you beat the game, plus you’ll see how much money you’ve accrued on the way.

DuckTales was a decently successful game. It definitely benefitted from the popularity of the TV show, which made the characters more recognizable to the public. From the Wikipedia entry on the game:

DuckTales was released to generally good reviews, praised for its gameplay and soundtrack, which was composed by veteran Capcom composer Yoshihiro Sakaguchi (a.k.a. Yuukichan’s Papa). Of particular importance is the "Moon" stage theme, which has since become one of the iconic tunes of the late 8bit era. The graphics were considered above average for the time. The characters were part of a popular Disney franchise and were easily recognizable. The game is considered a classic among many NES enthusiasts.

Also, for some wonderful inside information, head on over to this site featuring quotes from Darlene Waddington, a producer of the game. These quotes were compiled over a small interview and from Waddington’s posts on a web discussion board. There are some very interesting tidbits here.

DuckTales was one of my favorite games. It was one of those that I never tired of. I’ve gone back and played it since (most recently for this article), and I think it still holds value today. The gameplay still feels good, it’s still pretty challenging, and I have fun playing it.

I said in the Adventures in the Magic Kingdom post that this series will be like a wish list of games I would like to see appear in Nintendo’s Virtual Console for the Wii. With Epic Mickey creating publicity and with Capcom already a big presence in the Virtual Console scene, there’s no reason we shouldn’t see DuckTales on the Virtual Console. So, I’ll say this to Nintendo, Capcom, and Disney: get on it!

Species Name: Humorlessius Crappyhosticus

Would someone please cut the brake lines in all of Jay Leno’s 700 cars so that he will fly into the Pacific Ocean after losing control on a hairpin turn going down PCH? I’m looking out for all of us people. No Jay Leno means no Jay Leno cracking painfully unfunny jokes on your televisions five days a week. Now, I’m not going to lie, as an aspiring TV writer, I have a bit of a bias here. Jay Leno’s new show, which is remarkably just like the Tonight Show except it’s now on at 10pm instead of 11:30, has knocked five hours of scripted programming off of NBC’s slate.

Okay, sure, Jay Leno does have writers on his show (not that they’re doing a very good job mind you), but he still doesn’t have the amount of writers that five separate shows would be employing. And referring back to bias, the writers on Jay Leno’s show are variety show writers, most likely stand up comedians, and a very different breed from narrative writers.

What I’m saying is, Jay, why the fuck couldn’t you just stay retired? You don’t need to ever work another day in your life, you had a good run, why couldn’t you just have gone quietly into the night? But no, NBC offers you a buttload of money, and you and your gargantuan chin march right back to doing the same stupid schtick you were doing for the last twenty years.

In a world where Jay Leno had “Jay-walked” himself off a cliff:

Letterman would’ve gotten his just due by winning the ratings that he deserved by being a far superior late night host.

Johnny Carson would still be alive. (That’s right folks, Carson died because he couldn’t take watching Leno shame the reputation of “The Tonight Show” any longer.)

We would’ve been able to enjoy Conan at 11:30pm many years earlier.

Your grandparents would be very sad and confused, not knowing what to watch on late night television (that’s if they stay up past Jeopardy.)

Men all over the country would be able to enjoy their Sunday night football game without the incessant on-screen promo’s for Jay Leno’s piece of shit show.

The NBC executives wouldn’t be able to swim laps in their Scrooge McDuck style vault from the money they are saving by having Jay fill that 10pm timeslot.

A plethora of other, much funnier, stand up comedians could’ve been given the chance that Jay was given.

Jay Leno’s fanbase would have to go back to watching reruns of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “Mr. Ed” on TV Land.

Jay Leno sucks. Always has, and always will. The fact that he kills in the ratings is utterly mindboggling to me. I was so happy when I heard that he would be leaving “The Tonight Show,” but was equally crushed when they announced that he would be getting his new show, “The Tonight Show Redux.” I hate this show so much, that when the intro to Jay Leno’s show manages to sneak it’s way onto the end of the episode of 30 Rock I recorded on my DVR, I want to punch a hole in my wall! Motherfucker! This guy is like a fucking cockroach, and all I want is to never see him ever again…is that so much to ask? Alas, I have a sneaking suspicion that by 2012, the real end of humanity will not be the Earth’s core crumbling and swallowing us into the center of the Earth, but rather, NBC will be renamed the Jay Leno network, and will air nothing but Jay Leno, 24 hours a fucking day! Kill me now.

But one has to have dreams right?

Seriously...is Balloon Boy in there?

So much for making it through life without seeing Jay Leno straddle anything in a Canadian tuxedo.

At my university we have a group of students in social sciences who are organizing panel discussions

At my university we have a group of students in social sciences who are organizing panel discussions on the Hungarian transition in 1989 every Tuesday till December 8. I’ve been attending the events from the beginning and I have to admit that the one of today was the best so far. We had political researcher, political philosopher, constitutional law expert and historian among the panelists, and also a journalist as moderator.

After the discussion the audience (university students) could ask their questions, and a boy raised the issue of what would they say if our PM, Gordon Bajnai asked them what to do for the society to increase trust towards government and help poor people, for example. First, the panelists denied answering by saying if a PM asks something like that, then he should leave his post fast because a PM must have a conception on what to do. Finally László Lengyel, associate professor and political researcher, stated that actually Bajnai really had asked him a question like this a few weeks ago, and it’s sort of okay, since Bajnai is PM only for one year, for a temporary government. Lengyel declared it would be better to raise the question of what should we (university students) do. “If we were in 1989, Viktor Orbán would have already sent me to my mother in the fifth minute of the discussion.” he said.

By his words the Civil Society Forum came to my mind. There I attended a session with Jiři Pehe and Martin Bútora, both had been advisors to Václav Havel, and much to my astonishment Martin Bútora raised the same question when they were talking about the transitions in Central and Eastern Europe. He turned to the table where some of us from the younger generation were sitting and said: “Your parents did 1989, now it’s the time for you to do something.”

So, now it was the second time I heard from senior experts in politics that they are expecting “something” from the generation born around the transition. But what? In Hungary, for example, young people are not that concerned about politics, indeed they can’t be because they can’t even understand it. After high school, we’re starting the university without arriving to the transition in our History studies. Better teachers try to talk about it but it’s a sensitive topic, and so influenced by actual politics that if one doesn’t want confrontation with parents or other colleagues, then he just leaves this out from the syllabus. And if a pupil wants to know more, he has to learn it by himself, or at private classes, or at extra classes in the afternoon, so from somewhere else, but not from school. The latest historical event, where everyone is about to finish their Hungarian History studies is the Revolution of 1956. (Not that easy field either!)

I can’t imagine what are these people expecting from a generation which was not informed about what happened during the transition, and whose first thing to remember when it comes to politics is related to DuckTales. I also remember (I was 6 years old then) the day when the public TV interrupted its Disney show at 17:20, December 12 in 1993. The announcement of the death of József Antall, the first democratically-elected PM of Hungary, interrupted an episode of DuckTales. According to the oral history of our generation these had been the last broadcasted moments of the cartoon. (Be careful, it’s in Hungarian.)

The Facebook group “Akik nézték a vasárnapi Disney-t, amikor meghalt Antall József!” (“Those who had been watching the Sunday Disney when József Antall died!”) now has 10697 members, so these are who had been in the age of watching cartoons on TV and are registered on FB. Some 11 thousands seem to be a high amount in politics. If I was trying to start up something, I would use them. These are young electors without any remembrance of the USSR, grown up by watching commercial TVs and surfing on the worldwide web. They (we) are thinking totally different than those who lived their lives during the communism.

Of course the declarations I quoted were not addressed to this after-transition generation generally, but to those who feel themselves at least a bit concerned. And it’s very hard to attract the attention of everybody who had been watching TV December 12 in 1993. If I was told to do something, I would set up an NGO. An organization promoting democracy to young Hungarian people: what’s that, how to elect, how to govern, what is the so-called politics for etc. And I would found an NGO for collecting and representing under-30 generations interests, but never a political party. Never.

No, Mickey! You'll unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum!

Mickey Mania was a neat little game – fluid animation, confident visual presentation, clever little set-pieces – until someone put a goddamn mine cart level in the second stage. I fucking hate mine cart levels, almost as much as I hate escort missions (maybe more, I can’t decide). They’re a crime against platforming, and they should be blacked from the game developer’s palette. Usually you won’t see one until the latter third of the game, when the level designers have run out of ideas (see Taz Mania, Donkey Kong Country); not so with Mickey Mania. They’re* even clever enough to disguise the mine cart level as a ride through the Mad Doctor’s lab on a Frankensteinian operating table - but a lacquered turd is still a turd.

A mine cart level by any other name...

They’re* still throwing out interesting puzzles well after that, albeit executing them in the most annoying way possible. Mostly by sending wave after wave of respawned enemies at you while you’re trying to solve them. The enemies are more trouble than they’re worth. Take the skeletons for instance: some take one bean-shot to kill, some take three despite no apparent visual difference, all explode in a flurry of bouncing bones that continue to maim you from beyond the grave. You’re better off just jumping over them so you only have one or two pieces of enemy to contend with (they throw their skulls).

[* 'They' of course refers to game designers Travellers Tales and Sony Imagesoft, which, most interestingly, included the likes of David Jaffe, the very vocal director of the God of War games. Later tonight he will post a video blog from his garage rebutting the many valid points of this article.]

It’s at this point I remember this was probably supposed to be a kid’s game. Why is it that every single Disney game is far too difficult for its target audience? Ducktales, Land of Illusion, Aladdin, The Lion King – I could go on forever – each one, though pretty enough to check all those graphics/presentation/sound/music boxes for gaming mag reviews, is the gameplay equivalent of torture. Child torture. And last time I checked, that’s against the law, people.

You wanna talk about torture? Torture is having LOAD TIMES on a cartridge game. It’s just wrong on so many levels.

'Timeless Adventure' alright!

Let’s go back to mine cart levels, why I hate them with a seething, white hot rage, and why this one in particular has raised my ire. We’ve just become acquainted with with the titular character, his controls, how he handles, only to have that control unceremoniously snatched from us, helplessly hurtling (and hopping) towards all manner of deadly fates. Passing the level then becomes an exercise in rote memorisation, and of course, abject frustration. It’s nowhere near as soul-crushing as that most infamous of mine cart levels – the hoverbike-ride through the Wind Tunnels of Battletoads – but after save/load stating my way through the level, I found that the only way I could make the final jump was to purposely run into the final obstacle. Who in their right mind’s going to think of something like that? A child? A ‘hardcore gamer’? I know, I’ll just run into that thing that was killing me during the first three-quarters of the level! On purpose!

Oh, and another thing: what’s with Mickey’s bean-shot? What’s to prevent him from throwing magic beans anywhere other than directly left or right in a straight line? I’ve seen platformers and side-scrolling shoot-em-ups get it on before, but Mickey Mania is an experience akin to playing Space Invaders sideways with an abacus. That’s about the closest I can come to illustrating what a royal pain in the arse it is for a gravity-laden Mickey to shoot rogue bats on the y-axis. He *can* jump on *some* enemies *some*times, but like all non-Sonic, non-Mario platformers, it fails to distinguish just where, when, and how that will succeed.

It’s a pretty enough cartoon to be sure, but controls maketh the videogame, and – I’m sorry to say – Mickey don’t got it.

Now somebody give me a medal for not mentioning Epic Mickey a single time during the course of this write-up.

Oh.

VALENDO!!!!!!

Ah, para animar a turma, aí vai a musiquinha:

Aí vem um furacão,
Veeem, emoção!
Tem corrida em avião,
Teeem, sensação!
Velhos castelos,
Belos duelos!
DuckTales! Uh-uh!
São os caçadores de aventuras! Uh-uh!
Todos eles são grandes figuras! Uh-uh!
Nossos amigos enfrentam,
Mas há perigos que afugentam!
Tudo isso acontece em DuckTales! Uh-uh!
São os caçadores de aventuras! Uh-uh!
Todos eles são grandes figuras! Uh-uh!
Por isso a garotada só quer DuckTales! Uh-uh!

More often than not these days when I flip the channel on my TV, I begin to wonder what happened to

More often than not these days when I flip the channel on my TV, I begin to wonder what happened to all the good Tv shows? While there is some interesting programming on Tv nowadays thanks to the age of reality tv, Youtube on your pc and all things portable, I find these choices hard pressed to compete with some of the shows of past and recent past. Think about it, what talk show has been as interesting and entertaining as the Arsenio Hall Show? What show has made you laugh until you’re about to piss in your pants since the Chappelle Show or In Living Color? What show besides Law&Order has been a must see since NY Undercover? Exactly. None. While some people may or may not remember these shows, me and my peers grew up on these shows they were all absolute MUST SEE TV, and if you missed it, you felt like you missed out on winning lottery ticket, because all of your friends would be talking about it and you would in obscurity until the rerun aired. No DVR , no HULU, nothing. You just had to be there to see it. Lately Tv just hasn’t impressed me with the exception of a few shows and the last two I did find interesting are no longer airing(SouthLand- NBC & Life on Mars-ABC). While I know cable Tv has its multiple options and such, I often hear gripes from people who do have cable similar to this, “Why am I paying for this garbage, there’s almost never anything on I want to see!”. Even the cartoons nowadays are completely wack. Remember getting up early as hell before your parents woke up on Saturday morning to watch cartoons such as, Voltron, Transformers, He Man, school house rock, Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Looney Tunes, the Snorks, the Monchchichi’s, and what about on those afternoons you’d rush home to watch Tom & Jerry, the Rescue Rangers, HeathCliffe, Dennis the Menace, the Original TMNT and for slightly younger heads, Ducktales ,Tailspin, Animaniacs and the Tiny Toon Adventures. Now we’re subjected to all kinds of craziness on Tv, cartoons almost never come on in the afternoon anymore and we wonder why our kids nowadays are so damn grown! We took their childhood away thats why! In this day and age you can always walk down memory lane if you’re feeling nostalgic and go to either Youtube and watch clips of your old shows or maybe if your taste is not too exclusive you can get the show’s seasons on DVD. I also wonder what were they thinking when they took some of these shows off the air, ratings is always the scapegoat, but more often than not, the true reason is often greed and the common “creative differences” excuse us as viewers are left with. Look at the Chappelle show, that was a funny ass show! Hands down there was no competitor to that show’s humor and creativity. However, it is a widely shared speculation that the show was yanked off of the air because they wanted to interfere with Dave’s concepts and the writing of the scripts. Dave was not having that as that show was mostly his and Neal Brennan’s idea. Also from what I’ve heard the people from the network also never really went after the 50$million they gave Dave, because they were for one still able to recoup from merchandising and DVD sales and also, the possibility of a counter suit against them for what would’ve been racial discrimination. This type of ordeal happens often in Tv land and in Hollywood and is truly unfair. I don’t know if I’ll ever see Tv as good as it was before, but when I think back on memory lane, about all of the good shows I’ve seen over the years, I always ask while flipping the channels back and forth, “Where are they now?”.

The anticipation is building around Warren Spector’s Wii exclusive, Epic Mickey, which takes the world of Disney into a much darker realm (much darker than Kingdom Hearts). During a recent interview with Gameinformer, Spector mentioned one interesting Disney franchise he would love to reestablish, and that would be Ducktales? Hey, it comes from the camel’s mouth:

“I want to do a DuckTales game,…I can’t convince anybody at Disney to let me do a DuckTales game. How can that be?”

Fans of the NES era would love nothing more than to revisit Duckville, and who wouldn’t? Capcom did an incredible job with the platformer, and who knows what Spector has up his sleeve. If Epic Mickey does big numbers, we see it happening.

You know him as Scrooge McDuck or Uncle Scrooge. He’s Donald’s incredibly rich uncle, and you know him from “Mickey’s Christmas Carol”, “DuckTales”, or numerous other shorts.

Scrooge is rare to meet in Florida, but it’s not impossible. Your best bet, by far, is at the Magic Kingdom’s special events. He’s around sometimes at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party as well as Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Otherwise, good luck… maybe around Magic Kingdom’s Toontown Train Station or Hollywood Studios’ Animation Building or big hat.

Where have you met Uncle Scrooge?

Yep, it's that freakin' epic.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have arrived. While numbers 11-50 are amazing songs deserving of their cherished statures, these are the big-un’s, the President Tafts, the Beluga Whales of cartoon theme songs. Their greatness cannot be challenged, cannot be questioned, and are utterly unforgettable.

My suggestion? Find the biggest set of speakers you can attach to your computer, and blast the mother lovin’ hell out of these songs AND sing them at the top of your lungs (when appropriate, which is ALWAYS). Of course, if you want the FULL effect of this monstrous list, you should start the blasting and singing at number 50 and work your way down!

Numbers 41-50, here.

Numbers 31-40, here.

Numbers 21-30, here.

Numbers 11-20, here.

Also, just so your loved ones don’t think you’re off the deep end, I’d get some friends together to do this with. Social insanity is much more acceptable than singular craziness. Just ask Michael Jackson……………too soon?

Ahem. Right. Top 10 time!

Meeting Launchpad is very hit or miss, more miss nowadays. In Florida, he is sometimes at the Toontown train station. At Animal Kingdom, he’s been outside of the park once in the last few years that we can find. So good luck, but ask just in case!

Have you met Launchpad anywhere?

People who have ass loads of money, during these rough economic times, make me so mad that there are

People who have ass loads of money, during these rough economic times, make me so mad that there aren’t enough God Of War games to channel my rage. There is one bespectacled bastard who takes the word wealthy to a disgusting level. He doesn’t keep his coinage in stocks, bonds or Swiss bank accounts, like most booming beaus. No SIR! This moneyed mallard holds his earnings in a titanic safe for the world to look upon in envy. Don’t know who I’m talking about? One more hint. It is rumored that this duck of the dollar dawns a swim-cap and suit, then dives head first into his gains for a little swanky swimming. Scrooge McDuck is his name, big bucks is his game, and he’s the subject of today’s cartoon. Let’s take a trip down McDuck Drive for a few episodes of Ducktales.

The majority of Ducktales episodes centered around Scrooge trying to find new ways to further his title as “The Richest Duck in the World”. Joining him on these adventures, was a rather rag-tag group of geese consisting of his three nephews, a pilot who would get disappointed whenever he landed a plane instead of crashing it, an odd-ball scientist, a super hero-esque duck in a robot suit, and a baby triceratops riding cave duck. Ensuing madness was a given.

To thwart Scrooge in his exploits, and to give balance to the force, there were a few sweet nare-do-wells on the show. The Beagle Boys, Magica De Spell, and Flintheart Glomgold (Scrooge’s arch rival in the race to be “The Richest Duck in the World”) were just a few of the sinister scum that tried to relieve McDuck of his wealth, torment his nephews, not to mention being all around assholes.

Ducktales ran from September 18th 1987, until November 28th 1990, spawnning many other Disney related shows such as Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers, Tale Spin, as well as Darkwing Duck. All amazing toons that will be finding a slot in the RBM Thursday Throwback Hall Of Fame at some point in the near future.

Where is Scrooge McDuck Hiding at?

By Billy Burgess

It seems the future of cartoons are in jeopardy. They are being replaced by pre-teen and reality shows which is fine for an older audience. But what about the younger children who are too young for this.

I remember watching “Garfield and Friend”, “Tiny Toon Adventures”, and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” every Saturday morning. You can now find a new incarnation of TMNT but it’s not as good as the original. It seems the current trend is to remake old cartoons. Can‘t the studios come up with any new ideas of their own? Surely, there are writers out there, like me, with lots of imagination, can come up with new, exciting cartoon characters and stories for today’s kids. Stories you can remember generations from now.

Not being able to sleep one night, I turned the television on and flipped through the channels. I ran across a cartoon on the Disney Channel. I watched only five minutes before I was disgusted. The story, the humor and the animation were terrible, in my humble opinion.

After a few more nights of not sleeping, I decided to record some cartoons during the day for me to watch. I was shocked when I looked at the television listings and couldn’t find any of the cartoons that I grew up with! In fact, there were hardly any cartoons on at all. What happened to the creative original cartoons that I grew up with? What happened to the after school cartoons?

In my area, there is only the Cartoon Channel and the Disney Channel for cartoons. The Cartoon Channel shows some of the dumbest cartoons ever made. There is not an ounce of thought in them. The only two classics that are aired on the channel are “Scooby Doo” and “Tom & Jerry.

The Disney Channel does carry some cartoons, but definitely not enough of them. They rely heavily on pre-teen shows. Most of the shows are spin-offs of other Disney movies. No, it is not an original idea. But it seems that the writers think that the audience, young and old, are non intelligent . The animation is done poorly, the characters are not likeable, and there is not much of a plot.

I remember coming home from school and watching the Disney Afternoon shows, back in the late 80’s – early 90’s; shows like “Gummi Bears,” “Ducktales,” “TaleSpin,” “Chip’n Dale’s Rescue Rangers” and “Darkwing Duck.” Some of the characters from the shows came from other movies, but the shows had original stories and characters that you enjoyed watching. Thankfully, I have these and other cartoons on DVDs now. I prefer to watch them over and over again instead of the mindless effort that they are putting on the screens these days.

Maybe I should team up with Scrooge McDuck to help me write some new adventures from some of these classic cartoons I grew up with. I had so much fun as a kid imagining some of these characters were my playmates. We had so many great adventures together. You never know, perhaps, one day I could write continuing adventures of these cartoon characters I grew up with.

The early ’90s was a much different time for television. With cable and satellite still gaining a foothold, there weren’t nearly as many channels. Broadcast TV was insanely profitable, and in this time before demographics ruled the ratings, kids were an excellent target audience. This business model is how America ended up with nearly a decade of “The Disney Afternoon” block of animated series. Here are my five favorites (completely subjective; feel free to defend your own favorites in the comments).

Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers

Far and away my favorite. Here you have two chipmunks, two mice, and a fly solving mysteries and MacGyvering crap out of common household products. This show likely had a heavy influence in my enjoyment of mysteries of all kinds to this day. Also, there was an awesome NES video game.

DuckTales

One of the richest and most monetized entries in the anthology, appropriate given its protagonist, the miserly Scrooge McDuck, forced to care for his three troublemaking great-nephews when their uncle joins the Navy. The series spawned a handful of made-for-TV films, participated in that asinine All-Stars to the Rescue special, launched two spinoffs, and even saw a theatrical release. It did not occur to me until much later how ridiculous the concept of swimming through pennies would be — like, how are you supposed to breathe and/or not be crushed?

Darkwing Duck

The first (and best) DuckTales spinoff, Darkwing Duck was your classic masked crusader caper. One needs a secret identity and loads of gadgets when one’s secret lair is inside a bridge, after all. The darker tone here marked a shift toward older kids and tweens, which would be further teased out in Gargoyles.

Gargoyles

I must have had something else going on by the time this one rolled out, because I remember having lots of trouble keeping up with it day-to-day. Serialized cartoons were unusual for The Disney Afternoon, and this one played almost like an animated soap at points. But it was ambitious, and didn’t talk down to its presumably young audience, who would eventually end up watching similarly themed stuff on The WB and SciFi.

TaleSpin

My final pick was this awesome nod to the past (early 20th century setting) and the future (corporate synergy is now the new world order, no?), adapting characters from Disney’s The Jungle Book and casting the voice of Sally Struthers to run a bush pilot operation (I feel like this is before she started shilling for the starving kids). The sociopolitical parallels were surely lost on children other than me, but kudos to the folks behind this show for trying to keep the adults interested too.

RUNNER UP | Goof Troop, in which Goofy and his son Max had ridiculous adventures with their next door neighbors and respective best friends, Pete and PJ. The feature film A Goofy Movie outshined the series; its sequel…was direct-to-video.
