Got the idea from Threadbanger, recycling old umbrellas. Since I already had some nylon and waterproof fabric, I made it with that. It has a outside pocket on both sides and the zipper pull is a dog tag. The inside has black lining.

Cresencio came over last night and helped me cut it out.

There were some issues with the print, as the other side is rubber and completely waterproof. My sewing machine didn’t like that one bit, so I sandwiched it with black lining and was able to put it through the Juki Baby and my serger without any problems. The straps are long enough to go over your shoulder and for your hand to reach the pockets and the zipper comfortably. I also used the eye part of a hook and eye as a zipper stop. I love it with the white mesh!

It’s going to be available at HuaShan, for $1500. It takes forever to make, lots of seams and pieces and cutting. But it’s all serged to perfection, and your stuff will be dry inside – we know it’s gonna rain all winter!

Geez, everything I make I want, so I have to make duplicates of everything! The best thing about buying my stuff is that you know I made it with love and care and attention to detail, and not many other people are gonna have the same one!

ASPCA Rescue Tails: Kitten Survives Six Days in Duffel Bag

If one cat’s will to live could outmatch the strength of a heavy canvas bag, then surely one little kitten in Spokane County, WA, has the courage of a lion. Last week, two maintenance workers were testing garage doors at an apartment complex when they heard the muffled sounds of a distressed kitten coming from a large, heavy canvas duffel bag. The workers unzipped the bag only to find a second zipped duffel bag inside. When they opened the second bag, they discovered a frightened orange kitten, whom they promptly named Duff.

After giving him a much-needed bath, the rescuers called the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS)—an ASPCA Mission: Orange partner agency—to pick up and care for the tiny, suffering kitten.

“Duff was very lucky to be found,” says Animal Protection Officer Nicole Montano. “He probably would have died that day.”

Spokane Valley resident Donivan Crews later confessed to SCRAPS that he placed the kitten in the duffel bags six days prior to discovery. Crews was charged with confinement in an unsafe manner.

But this story of cruel abandonment has a very happy ending. One of Duff’s knights in shining armor adopted the lucky feline, who’s now recovering in a truly loving home.

“We are so grateful for the heroes who not only rescued this kitten but also took him into their hearts and home,” says Jackie E. Bell, SCRAPS Development Coordinator. “Duff will always have his name as a reminder of how he overcame such a tough start in life.”

The first appearance of a bag is on Egyptian hieroglyphics, which show pouches worn around the waist.  The next appearance is in 14th century Europe.  In Europe they often showed social status based on the embroidery and quality of the bag.  At this time the purses were for women mainly and were therefore attached to their girdle.

In the 15th century, both men and women wore purses.  They were often finely embroidered or ornamented with gold.  It was also customary for men to give their new brides purses embroidered with an illustration of a love story.  Later in the century, women, now wearing finer dresses, preferred to wear their pouches under their skirts which is a new fashion trend in the United States of America.

In the 16th Century, handbags were made out of common materials.  They were leather and fastened with drawstrings on top.  Large cloth bags were introduced and worn by travelers diagonally across the body.

In the 17th Century, bags became more complex and elaborate.  Girls were taught skills such as embroidery and needlework, that could assist them in finding a husband. These skills gave riose to stitching artwork on purses.  Around the year 1670, men’s breeches were made with built-in pockets, which caused them to stop carrying purses.  They did however carry little netted purses in the pockets to carry money.

In the 18th Century, as neo-classical clothing  came into fashion, women started carrying their handbags as not to ruin their outfits. They named these bags reticules.  Most women had more than one,  so they could use a certain one for each occasion.  Contents of these bags might include rouge, face powder, a fan, a scent bottle, visiting cards, a card case, and smelling salts.

In the early 1900’s people began calling their bags “handbags”.  This term referred to luggage that men carried.  They then inspired women, who began carrying bags with complicated fasteners, internal compartments, and locks.  In the 1920’s it became popular that bags no longer had to match your outfit. In the 1940’s, with WW |ll women’s  purses were made out of wood or plastic since metal was being saved for supplies.  In the 1950’s popular handbag designers included Chantel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes. Today these three brands are still popular, along with Gucci, Christian Dior, Fendi,  Prada, Kate Spade, and Lockheart among many others.

Sometimes I rip on Urban Outfitters for turning the hipster aesthetic into such a generic, accessible style, but I underneath it all, I like them. I really do. Their new collaboration with American outdoor brand Filson certainly lends to their credibility.

Fall is here- the weather isnt- but the desire for jackets and fall clothing has dawned…

I am not feeling the revived hippie/bohemian vibe going on in some of the clothes I have seen for this fall. More specifically I really really cannot stand suede/leather fringe, elastic hipster headbands, moccasins, “sweater coats”, and clogs. (i think i might extend my hate to almost anything suede at this point- except for these)

However, I am definitely feeling the jewel tones, purple accessories (just bought my purple handbag), deep wine red hues, light layering pieces (vests, light cardigans, light knits, deeply cut tunics), touches of grey, chunky knits, and this mute mustard yellow that is popping up everywhere:
