SPAO is giving away free calendar of SNSD for those who spend more than 70,000 won at the shop. This is how the calendar looks like:

The girls look awesome as always, if not even hotter than usual. But what interesting is, fans have speculated that the pictures used in this calendar were for the failed-to-release song before Gee. As you can see, the girls’ hairstyle and hair color indicated that it was an old, most likely taken before >>Gee teaser<<, photoshoot.

Back then SNSD was supposed to comeback from their long 9-months-hiatus on November 2008, but was delayed in last minute due to copyright problem of the title song. According to Isak the song was a remake of Duffy’s Mercy (I wonder how the SNSD’s version sounds like…). You may recall that there was a rumor about how the MV had back dancers, and one of the back dancers revealed that they’re wearing plaid clothing for the video. Hmm… I guess it’s safe enough that those pictures were indeed taken for the song that SM failed to release before Gee.

I’m not sure whether I really like this concept or not. Some pictures turned out great, but the some others are just… a bit off. I guess things might have been very different if the girls made a comeback with this concept + ‘Mercy’ remake instead of the glorious colorful skinny jeans + ‘Gee’ combo. Well, things might have been very different if the girls if they made a comeback from their long hiatus with anything but ‘Gee’.

Olá coca-bichinhos.

Desde ontem que se abatem toadas de chuva e vento sobre Leuven e eu adoro tempestades. Gosto de sentir o contraste da pele quente contra o ar gélido que me massaja os cabelos e me descobre a cara. Até as grossas gotas de água são apetecíveis. Brinco com elas.. Fujo, descobrem-me sempre. Aconchego o felpo, ajeito o cachecol. Troco a bicicleta pelo autocarro. Continuam a bater nas janelas, como se quisessem chegar até mim. O ar assobia e uiva nas frestas. As árvores dançam. Confortável e serena, aperto a caneca de café entre os dedos… As tempestades amaciam-me, reduzem-me à minha pequenez. I am a distant dreamer!

Ó coca-bichinhos que vagabundeiam aqui pelo estaminé… Não vos parece que vai sendo altura de se mostrarem? Sei que os ouriços (vocês) são animais tímidos, mas acreditem que não é necessária tamanha cerimónia. Há semanas estive em amena cavaqueira com um dos estimadíssimos leitores do Mau Feitio. Dizia-me ele que da primeira vez que pisou este chão maldito terá recuado intimidado. Entretanto o trauma esfumou-se e agora não só visita como até comenta. Queria perguntar-vos, coca-bichinhos, se também sofrem do mesmo mal.

Queria também explicar-vos, coca-bichinhos, que aquilo que cometem é uma atrocidade. Sendo eu uma pessoa assaz sensível, agasta-me desmesuradamente esta incerteza de ver desfilar centopeias de IPs e não lhes conseguir atribuir caras, palavras ou gestos. No entanto, tenho apreciado o vosso crescente interesse e participação e tenho um pequeno exercício para vos propor. Brincadeira simples. Como saberão, devido a recentes acontecimentos circunstanciais, este fim-de-semana tive que empreender uma visita a alguns estabelecimentos comerciais em busca de veneno para ratos. Acontece que também me pareceu que os elásticos das cuecas estavam lassos e as meias rotas (ó vil, quem ler isto até vai pensar que andas por aí feita vagabunda… e então? existe um número muito reduzido de pessoas que realmente me conhecem. só a opinião dessas interessa.). E o perfume praticamente esgotado. Assim sendo, decidi tomar medidas drásticas e ir às compras, essa tarefa odiosa.

Portanto, para além do veneno para ratos, tenho um perfume novo. O vosso árduo encargo será adivinhar qual. Poderão também explorar ambientes e descrever o tipo de perfume que eu supostamente poderia apreciar e explicar porquê. Aceitarei se adivinharem apenas a marca. Cada indivíduo terá três oportunidades. Vejamos quão bem me conhecem através do Mau Feitio. Surpreendam-me. Anónimos, amigos, estranhos… Enfim, todos os coca-bichinhos estão intimados!

I just got put on to this track, but then realized that I’ve heard it a few times. Definitely like the swag of this artist, “Duffy” who is a throwback of sorts with a sanguine, melodic voice that brings to mind ’60s artists. But I enjoy that thoroughly simply because I’ve been influenced most by that genre. Check it out and enjoy.

It’s Saturday. While waiting for the Pacquiao-Cotto fight, I might as well as empty my “to blog” folder. Lots of music. I like Duffy’s voice. (In the US there is some criticism of the appropriation of soul music by white British singers, but I don’t subscribe to that argument. I think these singers respect the origins of the music and they also talented). This is Duffy performing her song “Mercy” live on the Jools Holland Show–an institution on British TV.

Ever since I posted P!nk’s “I Don’t Believe You” video a few days back, I’ve been gradually obsessing over B&W music videos, which is something that happens about once a year. As much as I love color, there’s just something about B&W images that elevates the artistic merits of a video and it sort of really puts the focus on whatever subject, vision its creators are dealing with/were going for.  The lack of color somehow makes it more powerful.

Also, we are in November which is one of my fave months of the year and in a weird way, a sort of reflective, melancholic month for me (I’ll have to consult with Freud about that one).  I haven’t seen the sun in almost a week (that’s not a complain) and it has been drizzling on and off for two days which can’t help but add to the mood, which means there was no coincidence that I was drawn to P!nk’s newest video.

On that spirit, I decided to go looking for other B&W music videos–I could only think of a few and thought, well there aren’t many–and I ended up finding a ton of them.  Curious fact: most B&W videos I found were for rap artists.  Who would have thought they had a bit more of an artistic sensibility to color?  LL Cool J, Ghostface, Notorious BIG, even Puff Daddy have done B&W videos.

One I complete forgot about, which is funny since I highlighted as *video of the week* some months ago, was Smashing Pumpkins’ “Stand Inside Your Love” which is an amazing video.  There’s No Doubt’s fun in the high seas ”Hella Good,” K.D Lang’s yearnings on ”Constant Craving,” Madonna’s stylish ”Vogue,” and steamy ”Justify My Love,” Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ body paint shenanigans on ”Give It Away,” Jay Z’s gritty “99 Problems,” and an honorable mention goes to Aha’s “Take On Me” which isn’t completely B&W but the drawing panels sequences are just amazing.

To stay with the melancholic mood of November though, I’m sticking to highlighting only ballads about emotional turmoil.

Smashing Pumpkins “Disarm” proved early on that the band really was trying to convey something other than commercial advertisement for their newest single.  The tone of the song, the larger than life images of a flying Billy, D’Arcy and James, the instruments, the windows, the rooftops…… there was this sense of escape, flying away and also of vanishing into the ether.

Duffy’s “Rockferry” isn’t the most amazing video but it is pretty effective. The song–tittle track of her album–is one hell of a alt-country stormer and Duffy sings it with such force, her voice laced in pain and resentment. She’s leaving, she’s finally walking away from a relationship that has done nothing but bring her pain and though she’s leaving parts of her behind, she’s determine to make a new home for her somewhere else with the parts of her that did survive.  As the camera moves from her stern expression and then lingers on the train tracks, the station, the little shops, the streets, it gives us a sense that even though she’s leaving, she can’t help but look back because amongst all the pain there’s still some bit of love alive in there somewhere.

Amy Winehouse’s ”Back To Black” is a contender for video of the freaking decade, just as much as the album is a contender for album of the decade!  The song is the high point in an album that’s chockfull of them.  Beautifully shot in full gothic imagery, the video depicts a funeral: the death of love and therefore the death of a heart–the heart of Amy.  Friends and family (fans?) wait listlessly around for her to summon the courage to go on.  I know this his highly personal stuff and she wasn’t so much acting as just channeling her feelings, but the look on her face through out, specially the moment she holds her breath as the coffin is placed into the grave, then walks over to toss a single white rose and a handful of soil on top of the coffin? Absolutely brilliant and just devastating.  The whole video is technically flawless from editing to cinematography, and emotionally stirring.  A modern classic.  The director, Phil Griffin, should be making movies.

And speaking of technically flawless, beautifully shot videos and directors that should be making movies, Madonna’s “Oh Father” is arguably her best video ever or at the very least in her top five.  Directed by the master David Fincher during the peak of their collaborative run (“Express Yourself” “Vogue” “Bad Girl”) “Oh Father”  the video packs all the punch of an emotional drama into four minutes of unforgettable black and white exorcism.  For there’s little doubt that Madonna used the song and video to exorcise demons of her past: from her mother’s death, to her strained relationship with her dad, to the ghost of a still fresh abusive relationship, culminating with her making an effort to reconcile her past, present and future and move on.  This is epic stuff.  Her other collaborations with David Fincher may seem to have garnered more recognition through the years–and deservedly so–but “Oh Father” is hands down their highest achievement in the music video medium.  Had it been a movie? It would have won the best picture oscar in 1990.  That’s how good it is. A classic.

For all the things that ever ended, for all the people who left… forever or just for a while.

Duffy?

Allem Casting-Krempel zum Trotz gibt es zum Glück immer wieder Newcomer, die beweisen, dass es trotz häufiger akustisch-musikalischer Unfälle keinen Grund gibt vom Glauben abzufallen, sondern einem den Ölzweig reichen und mit dem Musikbusiness versöhnen: Paloma Faith legt ein überzeugendes Debut-Album hin.

Wie, billige Kalauer? Also bitte! Erstens sollte der geneigte Leser dieses Blog(zine)s dahingehend schon abgehärtet sein, zweitens wäre ich nicht ich, wenn ich solche Vorlagen nicht sicher nach Hause bringen würde, und drittens ist die Assoziation »Hans Albers« und »Reeperbahn« gar nicht so weit ab vom Schuss – immerhin war unsere Protagonistin (dieses schöne Wort habe ich mal bei dem wohl skurrilsten Gig meiner Barpianisten-Karriere aufgeschnappt) schon als Performerin in Burlesque-Shows tätig oder ließ sich als Assistentin eines Magiers in zwei Hälften sägen. Na, das riecht doch schon mächtig nach »Rampensau Deluxe«…

Zuallererst mal aber ein ganz GROSSES Dankeschön an Jule, denn sie hat mich überhaupt von der Existenz dieser Künstlerin in Kenntnis gesetzt. Ich muss zugeben: Rein optisch wurden da bei mir gleich mal Erinnerungen an die wunderbare Kate Pierson wach. Von deren Organ unterscheidet sich Paloma Faith zwar schon, ist stimmlich aber alles andere als ein »Windei«, sie hat das, was man gemeinhin als »schwarze Stimme« bezeichnet. Sieht man ihr so nicht ohne Weiteres an, was da raus kommt.

Dafür umso mehr, dass es sich bei ihr vielleicht nicht lediglich um ein weiteres Major-Modepüppchen handelt. Allein das Art-Deco-mässige Cover ihres Debut-Albums läßt auf ihr Faible für 20er/30er/40er-Jahre schließen sowie auf einen gewissen schrägen Humor. Auch scheint Paloma Faith selbst dem ein oder anderen Wortspiel nicht abgeneigt zu sein. Auf diesem ironischen »Heiligenbildchen« ist alles versammelt: Glaube, Taube, Liebe…und die Hoffnung schimmert im Hintergrund auch noch durch. Und ein Heizkörper. Und überhaupt Frau Faith höchstpersönlich –  eine im besten Sinne »komische Heilige«: Gleich aus »Alice im Wunderland« oder einer 30er-Jahre-Revue entsprungen, wirkt sie mit ihrer Ausstrahlung und den beiden Tauben-Tattoos auf Rücken und Schulter wie eine Pin-up-Kreuzung aus Judy Garland und Betty Page. Toll!

Paloma Faith – Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? (2009)

Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? – schon der Titel des Albums lässt den Liebhaber des schwarzen Humors wie mich schmunzeln (auch wenn ich trotz allem doch zu den Menschen gehöre, die die Schönheit der Wahrheit dennoch am meisten schätzen). Mit ihrem Anti-Drogen-Song »Stone Cold Sober« hat sie gleich einen Kracher als Opener platziert, wo sie zeigt was sie kann und was den Hörer erwartet. Und neben einer wirklich durchgehend sehr guten Performance sind das einfach ausnahmlos gut geschriebene und arrangierte Songs. Punkt. Mit ausgefeilten und eingängigen Melodien und auch guten Texten, von traurig-überraschend (»New York«) bis witzig (»Romance Is Dead« – wobei ich persönlich den eigentlich gar nicht so lustig finde, sich Mühe geben, kümmern und kreativ sein lohnt sich nämlich nicht, wird nicht geschätzt und bringt nix und überhaupt *grummel*)

Wie schon gesagt, hat Paloma Faith ein ausgeprägtes Faible für vergangene Dekaden, Show, Theater, Kino (immerhin ist sie ja auch selbst ab und zu als Schauspielerin unterwegs, aktuell im neuen Film von Terry Gilliam), und man nimmt ihr die Rolle als Zeremonienmeisterin, die grosse Geste problemlos ab. Es liegt ihr einfach, wirkt nicht nur gepost, sondern natürlich. Und die Retro-Zitate sind schlüssig: Dinge wie der Charleston bei »Upside Down« sind witzig, aber absolut stimmig und wirken nicht aufgesetzt. Man fühlt sich beim Hören des Öfteren in das Auditorium einer klassischen Musical-Revue versetzt (z.B. bei »Broken Doll«), was nicht zuletzt auch an eingesetzten Instrumenten wie Harfe oder Celesta liegt. Überhaupt, die Streicher- bzw. Orchesterarragements – ganz grosses Kino! Egal ob gefühlvoll oder verspielt (so dass man sich wirklich ein bisschen wie »Alice im Wunderland« fühlt) oder auch mit ungewöhnlichen Effekten oder einem typischen »Agentensound« (»Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful?«): die Arrangements sind ausgefeilt, geschmack- sowie effektvoll und nicht zuletzt gut eingespielt. Soll man ja nicht vergessen. Ebensowenig wie die tollen Backgroundsätze.

Ok, Retro ist in, vor allem auf der Insel. Und natürlich wurden schon die erwarteten Vergleiche zu Amy Winehouse (gab es eigentlich schon jemals jemanden, bei dem der Name SO deutlich Programm war?) und Duffy gezogen. Allerdings greift das meiner Meinung nach nicht. Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? ist nicht eine weitere 60ies-Soul-Revival (bzw. Rip-off)-Scheibe. Wir haben es hier mit einem durchaus modernen Pop-Album zu tun, hier wurde schon auch programmiert, der ein oder andere Synthie oder Drumloops eingesetzt. Doch obwohl man hier also schon etwas »urban-mässig« arrangiert und abgemischt hat, geht es auch nicht in eine Richtung wie etwa Christina Aguilera’s Back To Basics-Album – und vor allem lässt sich Paloma Faith nicht auf nervige Melismen-Exzesse ein! Ihr nehme ich die Vorbilder Etta James und Billie Holiday da mehr ab (siehe auch dazu die kleine Session mit Jools Holland während des Interviews im unten stehenden Video). Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? ist eine gekonnte Melange aus modernem Sound mit Retrozitaten, die so vor allem den »Geist« vergangener Epochen atmet und transportiert als ihn schlicht kopiert. Übrigens: Dass an dem Album verschiedene Produzenten(-Teams) beteiligt waren, hört man der Scheibe überhaupt nicht an. Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful? klingt absolut wie aus einem Guss, hier hat sich niemand auf Kosten des Gesamtwerks in den Vordergrund gespielt – da ein Executive Producer nicht angegeben ist, geht dafür ein besonderer Dank an die A&Rs Jo Charrington und Nick Raphael.

Den Titel des letzten Tracks (»Play On«) nimmt man dann gerne wörtlich und drückt auf »repeat«. Außerdem ist leider schon nach knapp 38 Minuten und zehn Songs Schluss. Dafür hat man aber wenigstens nicht den Eindruck, dass man mit zwei, drei Hits und ansonsten nur Füllmaterial abgespeist wurde.

Wer also auf Popmusik mit Retroeinschlag, Cabaret, klassische Revuen, Blues und Jazz, schräge Outfits, das große Gefühl mit dem leichten Bruch bzw. einfach in jeder Hinsicht sehr gut gemachte Musik und eine tolle Stimme mit Ausstrahlung steht, der sollte sich Paloma Faith unbedingt anhören bzw. ansehen: Denn wie es der Teufel will, ist sie demnächst in deutschen Landen unterwegs (Tourtermine s.u.). Interessenten mit halbwegs gescheiten Ohren und/oder Anlage empfehle ich übrigens den Kauf der CD anstelle der iTunes-Download-Version, die sich einem meiner Meinung nach recht penetrant in den Gehörgang drängt. Und wer Anregungen für Outfits braucht, kann mal einen Blick auf ihre Kolumne »Paloma’s Wearing« werfen, die sie im Blog ihrer MySpace-Page gestartet hat.

Übrigens: Kürzlich wurde ihr (wie schon angedeutet) auch der Ritterschlag in Form der Einladung in Jools Holland’s »Later…with«-Show zuteil (s.u.). Na, wer sagt’s denn! Frau Faith hat sich den Titel »La Paloma« wirklich verdient, und ich freue mich, dass so ein Talent nicht – sorry, aber der MUSS zum Schluss noch sein – auf (T/)taube Ohren stösst.

Pama International är en engelsk allstar-ensemble. På gruppens senaste platta Pama Outernational – den sjunde i ordningen – samlas kända namn som Lynval Golding och Horace Panter från The Specials, Fuzz Townshend från Pop Will Eat Itself och John Collins, producenten bakom The Specials klassiska Ghost Town.
 
Pama International är en ovanlig reggaegrupp. De tvekar inte att blanda sina baktakter med pop, funk och, kanske mest tydligt, amerikansk 60-tals soul. Musiken är levande, experimentell och, inte minst, förbaskat kul att lyssna på.

Deras patenterade musikrecept har visat sig framgångsrikt och 2006 fick de möjlighet att ge ut en platta på legendariska skivbolaget Trojan. Det var hela 30 år sedan Trojan senast signade någon ny, och det säger något om gruppens storhet.

I december förra året släppte gruppen hyllade Highrise Campaign, en platta där intäkterna gick till att stödja antivåldsorganisationer i Storbritannien. På plattan, som delvis byggde på Cherry Oh Baby-riddimen, medverkade ett gäng kändisar – Dennis Alcapone, Billy Bragg och Mungos Hifi för att nämna några.

När det nu är dags för nya plattan är förväntningarna höga och risken att bli besviken överhängande.

Men Pama International lyckas leva upp till förväntningarna. Plattan håller inte lika höga klass som Highrise Campaign eller Trojan Sessions, men sticker ändå ut i drösen av reggaeplattor som kommit ut i år.

På Pama Outernational samsas soul med dub med roots med disco med ska. Och det funkar utan att någonsin bli krystat. Lyssna bara på Dub A Disco, Question the Answer och I Still Love You More.

Pama Outernational är tillräckligt cross-over för att kunna attrahera den stora skara som tröttnat på Duffy och Amy Winehouse och söker något mer genuint.

Since 90 percent of our readers hail from the great town of New Milford, Conn. (and the other 10 percent have heard one of us ramble about NM), we’re going to introduce a new fixture to The Lost Generation – Great New Milford Rivalries. In the next few weeks, we’ll examine all the heated rivalries that occur within the confines of New Milford. We ask you, the reader, to vote on whose side you’d take in each match-up.

Lenny’s vs. Jimmy’s (Barbershops)

The Breakdown: New Milford is a big town. In fact, based on area, it’s the biggest town in Connecticut. But, for whatever reason, New Milford only has two barbershops – and they’re 200 feet down the road from each other. Lenny and Jimmy – two middle-aged men who give mediocre haircuts – have been in intense competition since any self-respecting New Milford citizen can remember.  They share the same parking lot, they share the same prices, and, many times, they share the same customers.

Jimmy: Vinchenzo – that’s his real name – is a sweet, old Italian man who cuts hair with gentle precision. He provides a very comfortable atmosphere for the customer and also has the leg-up on Lenny in the experience department. Jimmy also has gumball machines, a service that Lenny does not provide. (Note: Lenny sometimes has cookies. They’re not homemade, though, which sucks.)

Lenny: What Lenny lacks in ability, he makes up for in convenience. As opposed to Jimmy’s frustrating staircase, Lenny has a small ramp that provides easy access into the barbershop. There is one wrinkle, though:  the customer must walk up the ramp on the way out, a dilemma that has angered many New Milford citizens over the years.  Once the ramp is defeated, however, the Lenny’s customer has much easier access to Railroad Street than a customer at Jimmy’s.
