If you’ve ever bought a raffle ticket, this Angels for a Cause charity fundraiser pretty much works

If you’ve ever bought a raffle ticket, this Angels for a Cause charity fundraiser pretty much works the same way. Only instead of a ticket, it’s a virtual angel.

But – unlike a regular raffle – a lot of “ticket holders” will win at least something!

Here’s what you do…

1.) Choose a numbered, virtual ornament from the Tree of Hope and leave a comment HERE stating which number you have selected. Ornaments are numbered 1 – 99 for Rising Star Outreach and 100 – 200 for the Lisa Lopes Foundation.

2.) Make a $25.00 donation directly to either the Lisa Lopes Foundation or Rising Star Outreach and then email angels4acause@yahoo.com and tell them your name, amount of donation, and date of donation for verification.

Umm…that’s pretty much it. Here’s what happens next.

For each $25.00 donation you made to EITHER Rising Star or the Lisa Lopes Foundation your name will go into the December 15th drawing to win this personalized Santa Hat from David. (For example, if you donated $100.00 your name will be placed in the drawing FOUR times!)

And, if you were one of the first 150 people to make a donation you’ll also get this actual, goldtone angel ornament as a thank you gift from Angels for a Cause. There are 75 goldtone ornaments to be given away for each charity.

Each goldtone ornament comes in felt bag to protect your keepsake for years to come.

But wait! There’s more! (I’ve always wanted to say that. Remember those old Ronco commercials? Haha!

Some of the numbered ornaments have ALSO been pre-selected to include a special gift/prize from AFAC including 12 Christmas From The Heart CD’s!

Don’t forget to read through the official rules at Angels for a Cause before making your virtual ornament selection.

So what are you waiting for? Good luck, and Happy Holidays from Duke, David, and Angels for a Cause!

Thanksgiving is upon us and football season’s harvest is beginning to bear fruit. In the meant

Thanksgiving is upon us and football season’s harvest is beginning to bear fruit. In the meantime, the hardwood and hoops have once again joined forces to provide basketball fans with a cornucopia of roundball classics. This week’s Thanksgiving-themed edition of The Tuesday 12 hopes to find readers stuffed with turkey, embraced by loved ones and thankful for the many blessings God has bestowed on us.

Happy Thanksgiving!

A Bountiful Harvest
East Carolina fans are giving thanks for Dwayne Harris after a sparkling performance vs. UAB Saturday. Not only did Harris grab eight passes for 108 yards, the senior wide receiver scored three touchdowns to lead ECU to a 37-21 win over the Blazers.

ECU's Dwayne Harris on the move

After first quarter touchdown catches of 23 and 39 yards, Harris exploded with a 99-yard kick return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, giving him 254 all-purpose yards on the day.

The last touchdown was his third kickoff return for a score this season, breaking the school’s career and single-season records. He also became the first Pirate with two TD catches in a quarter since 2004.

If The First Thanksgiving Had Turned Out Like This
The Massachusetts’ pilgrims invited two Indian helpers to share in their Thanksgiving after a bountiful harvest that kicked off a holiday tradition that’s lasted 400 years. If those first Indian guests had treated their hosts the way North Carolina’s Defense treated Boston College’s offense Saturday, the tradition would have likely been squashed right then and there.

Holding BC to 198 total yards, the Tar Heels forced six Eagle turnovers and sacked BC quarterbacks three times. Defensive tackle Cam Thomas (Eagle Springs, NC/North Moore HS) scored on a 20-yard fumble return in the first quarter, a feat that was duplicated two plays later when Kendric Burney (Jacksonville, NC/Southwest Onslow HS) returned an interception 30 yards for his second defensive touchdown in as many weeks.

Safety Deunta Williams (Jacksonville, NC/White Oak HS) picked off three passes to push his team-leading interception total to six on the season while safety Melvin Williams added another interception.

Colonial Names Persevere
Nolan Smith returned from an NCAA-mandated two-game suspension and looked thankful for a chance of redemption. The junior point guard led Duke to wins over Charlotte and Radford last week, averaging 22.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field. Smith hit six of 10 3-pointers in the contests and was named the ACC’s Player of the Week.

Tracy Smith posted his second and third double doubles on the season in leading North Carolina State to wins over Akron, Austin-Peay and Auburn. The Wolfpack captured the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach, Fl. to run their record to 4-0 on the season while Smith took home tournament MVP honors.

Against Auburn, Smith’s loose-ball rebound and put back of a Julius Mays 3-pointer with 1.3 seconds left sealed the win and the tournament title. In the title game, Smith grabbed 15 rebounds to go along with 11 points and averaged 15.6 points and 11 rebounds as the Pack captured wins on three consecutive nights.

Home – Not Just for the Holidays
Shamari Spears started a promising collegiate career at Boston College by averaging 7.1 points and 4.6 rebounds as a true freshman in the 2006-2007 season. The following year, Spears played nearly 27 minutes per game, started 17 times and averaged 9.6 points and 6.1 rebounds before getting into coach Al Skinner’s doghouse late in his sophomore season.

Spears, a native of Salisbury, NC, transferred to Charlotte and sat out last season under NCAA transfer rules. Last week, Spears scored 20 points in a 101-50 loss to Duke and followed that performance with a 28 point, six rebound night in an 88-74 win over Yale. On the season, Spears is averaging a team-high 23.7 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the floor and 85.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Through the Woods We Go
Pfeiffer College’s Chris Woods (Thomasville, NC/Thomasville HS) was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week after averaging 25 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the Division II Falcons. Woods’ week included a career high 34 points to go along with 10 rebounds in a 97-78 win over USC-Aiken.

A Triumphant Field
Danielle Forword scored the game-winning goal with 11.7 seconds left as the third-ranked University of North Carolina field hockey team upset previously unbeaten Maryland, the top-ranked team in the nation, capturing the NCAA field hockey championship.

With the game tied 2-2. Forword, a senior from East London, South Africa, scored her 17th goal of the season on a penalty corner to give the Tar Heels their second national title in three seasons and their sixth overall crown.

I had to tweak the formula after I saw what it spat out after this weekend (DePaul is not the second

I had to tweak the formula after I saw what it spat out after this weekend (DePaul is not the second best team in the country right now). I realized that by doing the actual ranking of a team’s schedule, the differences in schedule were being weighted too heavily. For instance, the schedule difference between number 270 and number 250 is actually zero, but it was getting counted in the formula as a difference of 20. That meant that teams with a very good schedule so far were being rewarded way too much and teams with an average schedule were getting penalized.

The solution? Just use the actual schedule rating. Now teams that haven’t played anyone good are all even (since that’s the norm this time of year) and any teams that have played against some quality opponents or gone on the road are rewarded accordingly.

I’m also including the AP/USA Today Ranking next to each team so we can compare how voters think they’re going to do against how they’re actually playing.

Here are the rankings for this week as of 5:00 PM:

Excited actually tunggu event ni sebab lepas Jacob’s Walk of Life, aku dah tak join event-even

Excited actually tunggu event ni sebab lepas Jacob’s Walk of Life, aku dah tak join event-event macam tu.

Fuhhh laju giler lah you lari incik,

Lebih kurang setengah jam kemudian, start acara jalan kaki, aku dan Amy bersungguh-sungguh jalan laju walaupun tak de medal. Tapi kan 1 km tu dekat sangatlah, serius tak berpeluh langsung!

It was a tough one to lose today as Vince Carter once again got the better of his former team. Watc

It was a tough one to lose today as Vince Carter once again got the better of his former team. Watching him out there is both energizing and demoralizing if you are a fan. The crowd was once again all over him for the entire game but he seemed to feed off of the poisonous energy for one of his better games since coming back from injury. The Raps went cold in the 4th quarter and Carter stuck it to them like an ex girlfriend dating your best friend.

Vince drives past Turkoglu on his way to another dominating performance against his old club

Zan for Three

Perimeter Defense

Is it just me, or could we put this one in here every game? Gee, I wonder if word is getting around the league that Calderon, Jack, and Derozan can’t guard the outside. The Magic took advantage of the terrible D all afternoon. JJ Reddick looked like he was wearing his Duke uniform as he knocked down big jumper after big jumper, Jason Williams glided to the net with ease and then there was Dark Lord of the ACC that once again dominated, especially in the fourth quarter. You can handle Carter having a big game from a coaching standpoint but making Reddick look like an All Star is where you have to draw the line. Get a hand in his face, hell, force him to the basket where he isn’t that effecient. The guy is about as one-dimensional as they come so why not get up on him and guard the three? Belinelli was seriously missed today.

Derozan

Heir Canada got schooled today, plain and simple. The teacher dominanted the pupil. Derozan didn’t really show up today and ended the game with only 1 point. If he plans on keeping his starting job he is going to have to pull up his socks and start living up to his self annointed nickname. He looked more like Air Canada circa 2004 when he started phoning it in.

Vince

The guy loves to stick it to Toronto fans. It hurts a little inside everytime he does it. It’s like a slow motion car crash: you know it’s coming but you can’t look away. Once again he used our hate to fuel the Magic’s victory, that and our terrible defence on the perimeter. He was a true game changer and snatched away what could have been a huge victory. It is scary to think this guy now plays with Dwight Howard, Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson….the Magic are stacked.

Honorable Mention…

Amir Johnson

Quickly becoming a fan and blogger favourite. Provided key minutes and points off the bench today. Looks like a keeper. Keep your feet moving on defence and avoid that foul trouble though.

Zan of the Night

Air Canada

Who else? The guy is pure Evil. He has been dubbed ‘He who shall not be Named’ and tonight he gave the Raptors D the Imperius curse. Once again the Evil one shoved our boos right back down our throats and enjoyed every minute in doing so.

Not Zan of the Night

Jose Calderon

Dude, play some D! He’s beginning to resemble a pylon out there on a regular basis. He is a black hole and everyone in the building knows it. Offensively he missed three big buckets in the 4th that sealed victory for the Magic…not a good day at the office.

Another thing: Did anyone see Jay break the clipboard over his knee? That was awesome! The only thing that would have been better would be have been if he turned green and his arms ripped through his suit. I like the passion and anger. This is what Jose’s Defence is doing to all of us.

Too bad.

Only one non-tournament game features ranked teams, and it’s Minnesota Butler. Yuck.

Duke is on a path to play UConn for the NIT Tip Off title in the Garden Friday night. Two days before that, Arizona State and LSU will put up respective tests before falling in the semis.

None of e games were on the staff’s schedule, because we didn’t know what the results would be.

I’m not sure how this one slipped by me as a kid. I’m sure it played on television when

I’m not sure how this one slipped by me as a kid. I’m sure it played on television when I was a youngster–local Portland station Channel 12 was obligated by law to play John Wayne movies every weekend, I think–but I don’t ever remember watching it. If I did, I blocked it from my memory.

Oh, what a little fool I was.

Having been on a bit of a John Wayne binge of late, I rented the Blu-Ray edition of this and hoped for the best. I don’t think I’m giving anything away by writing that the film is notorious and legendary in equal measure for being the one where Duke is shot in the back by a dastardly long-haired villain, played by the great Bruce Dern. It was a jolt back in 1972 and plenty of kids, no doubt, were scarred by seeing the movie icon go down in such a brutal manner. It’s still a jolt to watch today.

But how was I to know any of it was good? Most reviews that I’d come across over the years treated it as mediocre late period Wayne. And people I’ve spoken with who had seen it loved the film, though I suspected they were blinded by childhood nostalgia.

I have to admit it’s a really splendid film, from Mark Rydell’s assured direction to (egads!) John Williams’ appropriately majestic yet lyrical score to the performances from all the kids (half of ‘em non-actor rodeo boys) to the stand-out roles by Dern and the great Roscoe Lee Browne, the latter as Nightlinger the chuck wagon man who accompanies the cattle drive.

And then there’s Wayne.

His work with John Ford will always be my favorite–primarily the Westerns–but Wayne’s performance here as rancher Wil Andersen seems the perfect culmination to his long career. The Shootist (1976) would end up being Wayne’s final performance, of course, but I like the Duke here more. A bit world-weary but not tainted with cynicism, Wayne seems genuinely comfortable acting opposite the gaggle of cowpokes he’s saddled with, striking just the right balance of obstinacy, fatherly protectiveness, and gentleness we want from our aging cowboy icon. He wears his heart on his sleeve, but not with the bathetic hard-sell one would expect. It’s quintessential classic Wayne charisma we get in The Cowboys, but tempered with the wisdom and offhandedness that only a pro can pull off effectively. There’s insight in them eyes… and when Wayne goes down, it’s crushing.

Union Institute on this date, 11/21/1852 was chartered as a Christian training school by Methodist Church in Randolph County, North Carolina. The school was renamed Trinity College in 1859. It was not doubt a good move to drop “union” in light of the pending strife closely related to that word. It was a wonderful move to honor the wonderful Trinity with this new name. In 1892 the college campus was moved to Durham, North Carolina.

But listen to this. A tobacco magnate named James B. Duke decided to give Trinity College a gift in 1924. It was a huge gift, reported to be a $40 million endowment. For money (it seems – God knows the hearts of the men) the great name Trinity was dropped. Want to know what took its place? Try Duke. Oh, the power of money – even on a Christian college. Trinity College became Duke University.

Reformatting your Windows XP computer will erase everything on your hard drive and reinstall the operating system. To avoid losing your data (documents, pictures, music, etc.), you will want to backup your information prior to reformatting. See the ITS Help Desk Personal Data Backup Support Center for more information.
By special request after mentioning it on Facebook and Twitter, I am writing about falling while run

By special request after mentioning it on Facebook and Twitter, I am writing about falling while running last night. The short story is I fell and I’m OK. The long story is … I was running with Duke and my friend Travis. About a mile and a half into our run, we had to pass a few people on the sidewalk. We ran out into the street and then back onto the sidewalk. I thought I jumped high enough to get back on, but apparently due to the darkness and wet conditions, I didn’t jump high enough, or one foot didn’t go high enough … or something like that.

All I know is that all of a sudden I fell on the sidewalk … in front of other people. My first priority was making sure Duke stopped, which he had. He was just kind of looking at me with a concerned look. But I got up, made sure I could move OK and kept on with my run. When I dropped Duke off a little while later I realized I had blood running down my leg and had a few more scrapes than I first realized. But I was OK, and Travis and I continued our run.

We ended up running almost 6 miles, my longest run in quite some time. I think it was my first run beyond 4 miles since the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half in early September. That just shows how bad my running has been since that race. I’m actually a little sore today from both the fall and the run. My shoulder actually hurts a little bit too, so suprise, surprise, I’m putting off a day of 100 push-ups. But I’m not forcing it and will just start again next week. Actually, I’ll probably do another day of it this weekend and then just redo the same week next week.

So, about this fall. I know I’m not alone … I just can’t be. Take my poll below.

Two more Saturdays left to go, and it appears the road to the ACC Championship is becoming less cong

Two more Saturdays left to go, and it appears the road to the ACC Championship is becoming less congested. Georgia Tech now has the Coastal title, and will take on either Clemson or Boston College in Tampa Bay once the dust finally settles down. Both teams have games of importance coming up ahead against UVa and UNC respectively. Should Clemson and BC remain tied at the end of the season, the Tigers will have the inside track to the Atlantic title thanks to their victory over the Eagles in Week 3.

Still, there’s plenty of football left before the season’s over. Duke and FSU have must-win games coming up in order to be bowl-eligible. With that in mind, here are my picks this week:

Duke @ MIAMI

Maryland @ FLORIDA STATE

Virginia @ CLEMSON

NC State @ VIRGINIA TECH

GAME OF THE WEEK – NORTH CAROLINA @ Boston College

Georgia Tech and Wake Forest have the week off.

Worth Noting:

Talk about friends in high places. Governor Charlie Crist of Florida is throwing his support behind embattled FSU coach Bobby Bowden. While I can understand the personal connection behind his support, one has to wonder if he’ll gain anything from a political perspective. I don’t think we’d see anything like that in North Carolina. That’s because our governor went to two schools in the SEC. Go figure.

Even though the last two weeks have bee tough for the Blue Devils, they still have plenty to crow about. Defensive Coordinator Mike MacIntyre was recently named National Assistant Coach of the Year by the AFCA. He is the main reason their defense has improved as the season went along. In addition, senior QB Thad Lewis is one of the finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, an honor that appears to have a great deal of respectability.

Speaking of Thad Lewis, should he have a good outing against Miami, he will break the school record for career passing yards held by Ben Bennett, who at one time held an NCAA record for most passes attemped and completed, along with total yardage. Lewis has already met Bennett’s completion mark (820) and surpassed the attempts mark (1,425) and is looking to complete the trifecta on passing.

Even if Maryland’s season bottoms out as expected, don’t expect Ralph Friedgen to go anywhere, at least not yet. Turns out he has a rather expensive buyout clause in his contract to the tune of over $4 million. Since UM is facing their own set of financial woes like the rest of the state, an early release for the Fridge would mean serious cutbacks to a number of non-revenue sports. Not something the folks there would want to take responsibility for during a recession. Guess the misery in College Park is likely to remain in place for a while.

Georgia Tech stands at #7 in the latest BCS Poll. While that may not seem as significant, the other six teams ahead of them are all unbeaten. For now, that is. So not only do the Yellowjackets have to worry about what’s going on in the ACC, but what the Gators, Crimson Tide, Longhorns, Horned Frogs, Bearcats, and Broncos are up to as well. In any event, what happens with those schools could mean a huge difference between Miami and Pasadena for the Ramblin’ Wreck. And that’s more mileage than the antique car has racked up during each home game over the years!

I wanted to put out a set of rankings before the first full weekend so we can see how much this changes over the course of a few days. What I found out was that even since Wednesday’s batch of rankings, a lot has changed. Not so much in how the teams are playing, but in their schedule rating.

The schedule factor used for my rankings is the rank of the RPI of a team’s schedule. This time of year, this measure is extremely volatile for a number of reasons. First, and most obvious, is that winning percentages are the main ingredient for this measure and those undergo massive changes with so few games played. Think about going from 2-0 to 2-1: it results in a .333 point drop in percentage, something that will not be possible a week from now. Duke, for example, has yet to play a team with a loss in their three games while Georgia has faced two teams with losses. Thus, Duke has a Top 10 schedule and Georgia is ranked 270. Luckily, this will even out over the next few weeks.

Another reason is the fact that whether the game is played at home or on the road changes the weight of the game in the equation. With most bigger teams camping out at home, their SOS is going to be much lower than the smaller teams traveling around. Thus, the teams like Virginia and Georgetown, who have gone on the road already, have higher rated schedules.

And the final reason why this is a very volatile time of year is because that some of these teams (Michigan) have only played one game. They are ranked so high because they played really really well for one game…but I can’t account for the fact that they only played once except in the schedule constant. That’s why it is important to realize that these rankings are based solely on how a team is playing right now…there is none of my opinion in them and I can only use the data the teams have put out there. So, here are the new rankings as of 5:00 pm today:
