Dull Boy by Sarah Cross

Of the new books by the new authors, I think I am most excited about getting this book in the mail. I love the concept and I love Sarah Cross’s writing style on her blog and website. I think this sounds like a wonderful read and I look forward to telling everyone all about it!

Superpowers are awesome – unless you actually have them, like Avery does. There’s only so much he can pass off as “adrenaline” before people start to get suspicious. Probably it’s best to lie low, so guys in white lab coats don’t come to carry him away, to find out what makes his freakish body tick. Who wants to be vivisected? But flying under the radar becomes a whole lot harder when you can actually fly. It’s dangerous to be different, so for now he’ll pretend to be normal, unremarkable Avery – a dull boy – anything to keep his secret safe.

If you ever have the good fortune to meet YA author Sarah Cross in person, don’t mistake her quiet disposition for lack of superpower prowess. This kind, cheerful, sweet-mannered New Yorker once saved me from a grenade thrown carelessly in front of an oncoming 6 train on the Upper East Side. It all started at Sarah MacLean’s party and there was wine and Turkish food and an errant cab driver…

Er… that’s actually a story for another night. What you need to know now is that Sarah Cross is not an author to mess with. And if her debut novel is as funny, charming, and downright intimidating as she is, well… we’re all in for a kick-ass summer read with DULL BOY!

The Party

It’s a surprise party for Avery’s debut, thrown by his best friends/teammates. It’s not a birthday party, but there is a giant cake, and a frosting-spattered robot jumps out of it and challenges Avery to a deathmatch. (Um, a friendly deathmatch, of course … the robot was totally Darla’s idea. She thought it would liven things up way more than Pin the Tail on the Donkey would.) There is also a disco ball to make the most of guest Edward Cullen’s sparkles, although Ed read the invitation wrong, and so most of his sparkly skin is covered by a Batman costume. Alas.

The party is held in Sophie’s backyard. There is an Ultimate Fighting-style octagon instead of a dance floor, the point of which quickly becomes apparent when the cake-encrusted giant robot reveals itself. The octagon looks disturbingly cute because Sophie tied balloons all over it.

Party theme? A mix of robot world domination, pastel streamers, glitter, and cupcakes. Avery could do without the glitter. And the robot who challenged him to a deathmatch. That was just not cool. He did not sign up to play Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Robots at his own party, with his face as the punching bag.

Plus he almost broke a tooth on a rivet that was left in the cake.

At least the guests will be happy with their take-home robot-shaped lollipops and limited edition Ninjarangs.

What did I tell you guys? Cross can party. Better bring a change of clothes and your ninja skills.

The Guest of Honor: Avery

Avery is wearing jeans & a T-shirt for tonight’s big debut. And his theme song? Right. He has no idea. He doesn’t have a chance to pick a theme song because his J-Pop-loving friend Sophie and his Norwegian-death-metal-loving friend Nicholas are too busy fighting for control of the music.

I seriously cannot save you from this madness, Avery–sorry. I hope your superpowers are up to the challenge.

Some of you may be familiar with my disappearances from the blogosphere once a quarter.  Ok, let’s face it, recent disappearances have been far more frequent than once a quarter.  But in the past, when I was actually posting one or more times a day, the one to two week absences were more disturbing and unusual.  Usually such hiatuses (hiati?) were due the periods of intense work stress I came under due to quarterly reporting to our governing trustees.  There is a big meeting that I did much of the logistics work for, plus the proofing and assembly of 350-400 page meeting material books.  While I would not consider quarterly reports the pinnacle of my literary achievement (more on that later.  and by later, I mean in a different post, possibly on some other day), I am generally proud of the work I do on them.  I am a good editor, and this is one of the few times I get to use a skill of my own that I enjoy for something that I know is important to the functioning of the office.

And now, that important feeling for me is coming to a close.  For those of you who don’t know, I’ll be moving to Portland to start law school this fall.  No longer will I be a lowly Administrative Assistant at the ‘Glove, but will instead be a legal jargonese pirate somewhere to the far West.  This is my last period of headless chicken running around at the office, and it’s made me somewhat nostalgic and a little sad.  True, this being the last book has also considerably relieved my usual stress.  If I really mess up on the book itself, or the scheduling, or accidentally come to work naked by mistake, I never have to see any of the Board members ever again.  I’m free from some of the stress of making my edits ‘perfect’, because in another little while, people will forget I ever even worked on these things.  I sit here, a few hours early, with everything complete and in order, and I’m not even tempted to take a final look-through for mistakes.

Three hours later….

Ok, ok, I’m a perfectionist.  I couldn’t help but look.  And there were errors.  But now, finally, and at last, I’ve turned in the final version to the printer and I will never do another Board Book in my life.  Oh.  Wait.  Let’s just change where I said ‘final version’ back there to ‘version three’ so I can make two more corrections.  Ehum.  I think I’m having a minor heart attack.

The New Game is the fourth studio release from Nu/Alt. Metal band Mudvayne, released November 18, 2008 on Epic records.

My first impression of this album is: clone of Lost and Found

Anything that could be said about Lost and Found can be pretty much said about this album. The only difference is that they seemed to get it right this time, as opposed to the pile of heaping feces that was Lost and Found. This does not by any means that it’s good, but it’s better. This is still a million miles behind L.D. 50 and The End of All Things to Come, but, I’ll break it down for you.

The best part of this album is that Mudvayne seemed to remember what groove and heaviness were on this album. Granted, they don’t use it to the full effect that they once did, but at least they got me a bit interested on the track “Have it Your Way” – though I am a bit ashamed to admit it. As always, Ryan Martinie is spot-on in his bass work. It’s a deep and technical as ever, but it doesn’t have the push, drive, or intensity it should. In fact, almost nothing has that raw energy that Mudvayne once possessed. There’s a little bit in the song “The Hate In Me” that reminds me of what this band is capable of, and what they should be doing. There are a few glimpses throughout the album, making me hate this album because they’re holding back (at least that’s what it sounds like).

Now, for the worst part of the album is the songwriting. It’s just plain boring. Unless you’re going to write something truly good, you can’t get away with plain songwriting. The only song on the album I exempt from this is “Dull Boy” – the lyrics aren’t so good, but this song is a good song. Actually, the lyrics are absolutely terrible. Like most of the other songs on the album. The groove in this song just past the opening vocals is plain dirty (in a good way).

This album simply sounds like they are underachieving, just as it did on Lost and Found. Maybe the second full album they have been quoted as saying will be released sixth months after this one will be better, but I do not have my hopes up. After all, I have little to nothing to say good about their last two releases. Oh well. Just another band I liked in the 90’s to suck now.
