I know we don’t have Guber Rick Perry to kick around any more but some things can just as easily be applied to any of the other Uber Gubers enscounced in one or another of the Statehouses. I’ve seen signs reading TEE PARTY FOR FREEDOM. I suppose it could have been wacko golfers. Perhaps we should initiate a campaign, “Special Ed for Tea-baggers”.

Happened today. Probably the hundredth time I’ve seen it. Zooming along, on a major road

Happened today. Probably the hundredth time I’ve seen it.

Zooming along, on a major road–where the speed limit was 45 mph–in the middle of three lanes. Suddenly I notice a vehicle ahead of me, but in the far right lane, is stopped at an usualy point. Yes, you’ve seen it coming, it’s an old lady stopping to let a couple kids jaywalk across Sahara Blvd.

Jaywalking is a big thing right now in Vegas. I think there have been 10 killed so far, not quite four months into the year, most of whom were jaywalking.

in the lane to my left During my time in the service I saw this type of thing almost on a daily basis. For 20+ years. But on a base/post, speed limits aren’t usually very high, people tend to drive better than the general public, and everyone on foot seems to be paying more attention than, again, the general public. But it drove me nuts anyway.

Now, a military retiree, I don’t make it on base but a couple times a month. And this will get a lot better after some more coffee

Goal 58: Steve Allen was the first host of The Tonight Show and a man of many talents. Later in life

Goal 58: Steve Allen was the first host of The Tonight Show and a man of many talents. Later in life, he became a secular humanist and wrote a number of non-fiction books. Today, I read his volume on critical thinking entitled Dumbth: The Lost Art of Thinking With 101 Ways to Reason Better & Improve Your Mind.

Over the past ten years, I’ve read about 20 different books on critical and creative thinking. Dumbth was not the best of the bunch as many of the examples in the first part of the book focus primary on poor customer service ancedotes and even breaks a few of Steve Allen’s own rules that he outlines for better thinking; nevertheless, it does offer some excellent practical advice for anyone who would like to improve their ability to consider evidence and reason more effectively. While his list of 101 rules could certainly have been consolidated into a shorter catalogue, I do think this second part of the book was certainly worth my time.
