Woke up a while ago. It’s already unpleasant. Spent a chunk of last evening bashing dents into the ex’s car since it seemed just about as productive an activity as reading Horney’s papers. You have to consider the effort/benefit ratio. I called later to inform my intended recipient (my ex not Horney) of my exceptional deed only to be informed in return that he had sold his car a month ago. Such is the calamitous nature of life.  God knows why we are alive. Can’t even extract revenge without the Universe screwing me over.
The house help has been unusually chirpy this morning and insists on regaling me with tales of her oafish neighbours. Fair enough, says I, better chat this slippery cuckoo than the other one. My mother does not warm up to people in the early hours.

“Mera bajuwalla ekdum zinc hai, baby. “ (Rough translation:” The people next door to me are zinc, child”.)

As it goes, I reckon, my prolonged consumption of prohibited substances has effectively reduced my comprehension ability by a wide margin. That and changing majors about 4 times in 5 years. Yet, I am given to believe that no matter how further from reality the inner working of my mind may be, “zinc” neighbours are only possible in a social environment created by Pixar.

“What the fuck??” (An eloquent manner of questioning is a gift of studies in Pragmatism.)

“Haan baby! woh bajuwaali kal ghar aayi aur boli tera tv mast hai. Aur aaj mera TV marich gaya. Pakka zinc hai. “

(Rough Translation: “Yes child! The next door neighbour came home yesterday and remarked that you have a nice TV. Today the TV died”. )

Before my brain imploded with crosswired deductions, my 13 year old sister leaned over and enunciated calmly -

“Her neighbour jinxed her TV. Close your mouth and get another coffee before you disintegrate.”

I am retiring to bed and watching Duran Duran videos for the rest of the day. They make just about as much sense as the world around me.

And today I have a LOT of stuff to do  (including  Uttrik´s work!) and I have AESIR recording to make – I´m terrified of all this going wrong… – and, not satisfied, I´m still creating the pages on this blog,  since I just didn´t want to revamp “How Duran duran keep rocking my world”.

Plus, just because I´m Gemini and annoying and I know I can do a lot of things at the same time, I will update the fotolog and I took a few minutes to look at Cherry brunette´s fotolog, my new friend of posting and Duran duran (Japan also, since she is addicted now), Alyce Jennifer. *there´s a link to her blog on the side bar! ——–>

I hate blogger.com by the way…I made a HUGE comment on her blog and it didn´t uploaded!! *Why haven´t I saved a draft, don´t ask! I´m Erika Fiore, the one that signs in swimming school when Titanic is already sinking! xD

A question that has nothing to do with this post: Did somebody thought that Robin Williams´s joke about Brazil wasn´t funny at all? I liked it! o.o

Because here in Brazil we do have drugs and we do have strippers…as anywhere else in the world…besides, he even did jew jokes and it was worse… so let´s just stop being sooo brazilian and leave the guy alone ok?

Today I´m feeling kinda lonely…a green eyed gorgeus haven´t answered my last mail – hangover from the birthday party? – Fabi is not online, and Camila, poor baby, is still working on her TCC. Raqee is the only one online….and she´s off now, I just saw. ¬¬

Well this is it then, my 100th post and as promised here are the 100 songs currently in my top 10 (ok I know that sounds stupid, but regular readers will understand!) If I were to do this again say for the 200th post there would be quite a few differences. This list is in no particular order, although Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” probably still remains my most favourite song ever! I would love to see your comments on the list; is there anything you really like or really don’t like on here, is there anything really embarrassing perhaps. What is your top 10 or top 100? Incidentally I can already think of many more that didn’t make the cut!

No Woman No Cry        Bob Marley – Obviously I love this song but it has to be the live version and then preferably the one from the 1975 London Lyceum concerts. That album was called simply ‘Live’ and I wore out my vinyl copy completely

Police And Thieves        Junior Murvin – A classic reggae song, well covered by the Clash. Sadly the song is still all too pertinent today

Licking Stick     Desmond Dekker – Fun reggae at it’s best from the late great Mr Dacres

Cottage In Negril           Tyrone Taylor – Don’t ask me why but this is probably one of my favourite reggae songs ever. It makes me want to go to Negril

Rebel, Rebel     David Bowie – The first single from the wonderful Diamond Dogs album. A glorious Rolling Stones pastiche on which, unusually, Mr Bowie plays lead guitar

Heroes  David Bowie – Inspirational and also a song that I will have played at my funeral in 50 years. You should check out the versions he recorded in both French and German

Strawberry Letter 23       Brothers Johnson – Regular readers will know just how much I love this song. ‘Nuff said

I Want You Back           Jackson 5 - That opening piano run still sends shivers down my spine and frankly how can you not want to dance to this

Superstition      Stevie Wonder – Stevie rocks out more than many on this one which was originally written for Jeff Beck. More than enough to forgive Mr Wonder for “I Just Called To Say I Love You”

White Man In The Hammersmith Palais    Clash – In my humble opinion the finest song by the finest band ever!

London Calling  Clash – If my memory serves me well this is the only Clash song ever to feature in a Bond movie

Complete Control          Clash – A venomous attack on CBS, far more venomous than the Sex Pistols “EMI” in my view

Don’t Let Me Down        Beatles – My favourite Fab Four song which in fact was only a B Side! Also a song that I sing very badly at full volume when I’m drunk

Revolution        Beatles – Another moptops classic that I also sing very badly whilst under the influence of alcohol

Instant Karma    John Lennon – Karma is a powerful thing and Instant Karma is a powerful song!

Do Anything You Wanna Do      Eddie And The Hot Rods – In my teens this was probably one of the most meaningful and uplifting songs I knew. Even at the old age of 50 it still does it for me

Gary Gilmore’s Eyes      Adverts – For subject matter alone this would be in the top 100. Mr Gilmore was executed in the US in the mid 70s and he donated his eyes to an anonymous someone. That someone is the subject of the song!

Theme From A Summer Place    Percy Faith Orchestra – You might say that this is one of my guilty pleasures, well maybe, but it is a beautiful piece of music. It was also used to great effect in the TV adaptation of Stephen King’s Rose Red

Wild Is The Wind           David Bowie – Not a Bowie original but one written for a 50s movie, perhaps more of a torch song and one of Bowie’s best ever cover versions. It certainly makes up for his bloody awful cover of the Beach Boys “God Only Knows” in the 80s

What’s Going On?         Marvin Gaye – Great song from a great album, such a shame that it still rings true after nearly 40 years

September        Earth, Wind And Fire – E, W & F at their best, probably my favourite Saturday night song

God Save The Queen    Sex Pistols – Fear and conspiracy kept this from the number one spot in the Queens Silver Jubilee week in 1977. For me this is a major contender for the UK’s new national anthem!

Public Image     Public Image Limited – So many people thought that Lydon would do nothing after the Pistols, how very wrong they were.

Suspicious Minds          Elvis Presley – Elvis gets his mojo back after all those years of shit movie songs

She’s Gone    Hall & Oates – Taken from the Abandoned Luncheonette album, one of the saddest songs I know. I always play this when I’m in a melancholy mood. I also believe that Daryl Hall has the finest white soul voice in history. And what the bloody hell is a luncheonette?

Mack The Knife   Bobby Darin – I love story songs and this is easily one of the best. You have to tap your feet and click your fingers to this don’t you?

Karma Police    Radiohead – Probably the best band in the world today

Bernadette        Four Tops – Levi Stubbs RIP, I believe Mr Stubbs was the finest soul singer there ever was and ever will be. is this the only song about a Bernadette too?

Still Water (Love)           Four Tops – Relaxing, powerful, beautiful, ethereal, there simply aren’t enough words to describe this gorgeous song

Into My Arms    Nick Cave – As love songs go this might be quite strange but it is undoubtedly beautiful too

Talk Show Host    Radiohead - My favourite song from the ‘Head by a long way. just a B Side and als on the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo And Juliet’ movie

Take Me Girl I’m Ready  Junior Walker – My favourite ever juke box record. In the late 70s this was number 77A on the jukebox in the Windmill pub in Ruislip

Woman To Woman        Shirley Brown – A real torch song, sets the hairs on the back of my neck on end

If Loving You Is Wrong   Millie Jackson – and the classic soul torch diva has to be Ms Jackson. I saw her live at the Victoria Apollo in the 70s

Ms Jackson      Outkast - Talking of Ms Jackson (although this is actually about Erykah Badu’s Mum) here is my favourite Outkast song. Don’t you think it sounds a little reminiscent of ‘Strawberry Letter 23′?

I Know What I like (In Your Wardrobe)     Genesis – Personally I think Genesis went downhill after Peter Gabriel left, what do you think? But this Gabriel era song is just sublime and what a fantastic title too

Metal Guru        T Rex – A song I used to mime to with my tennis racquet as a teenage wannabe rock star. So why did I go on to become a bloody accountant?

One Nation Under A Groove       Funkadelic - The ultimate dance song. I saw them live with companion band Parliament in 1978 at the Hammersmith Odeon. Still one of the best concerts I have ever seen

I Can See Clearly Now   Johnny Nash – This man has the voice of an angel, why are so few of his albums available on CD. Definitely one of my heroes, I reckon I would be lost for words if I met him

There Are More Questions Than Answers            Johnny Nash – A Texan singer that sings reggae? it shouldn’t work should it? But it does doesn’t it?

Solsbury Hill     Peter Gabriel – If I ever feel a bit down this is the song I play to pull myself back up. Written about his decision to leave Genesis just before they went towards mega stardom

I Was Watching You      Rosanne Cash – Regular readers will know that I have mentioned this song before. I do cry most times I listen to it and although it was released after his death it makes me think of my Dad

Hurt      Johnny Cash – Mr Cash covers a Trent Reznor off of the Nine Inch Nails song. You must be pretty hard if this doesn’t make you at least a tad emotional

The Man Who Sold The World    Lulu – One of the better covers of a Bowie song. If their respective labels had sanctioned it Mr Bowie was ready to record a whole album with Lulu. Sadly that didn’t happen

All The Young Dudes     Mott The Hoople – The greatest Bowie cover, in fact one of his greatest songs and he simply gave it to Mott!

Wishing Well     Free – Forget all the stuff he’s done with Queen, this was one of Paul Rodgers finest vocal performances

You Get What You Give        New Radicals – One of the most short-lived bands of the 90s, but what a legacy. Gregg Alexander also wrote (or co wrote) Ronan Keating’s ‘Life Is A Rollercoaster’ which I kind of like!

A Town Called Malice    Jam – Paul Weller. probably the greatest English rock star of his generation. I saw him live at the MEN in Manchester last year and he is even better in concert. Indeed he played this Jam classic too

The Look Of Love         ABC – For all my criticism of the 80s this song and the album it comes from (The Lexicon Of Love) is one of my favourites. Produced by the great Trevor Horn

Sheena Is A Punk Rocker          Ramones - 1, 2, 3, 4 and off da bruvvers go. Hey Ho Let’s Go is there really anything else to say?

Wuthering Heights         Kate Bush – Oh Kate my Lionheart, I love this woman and want to have her babies

The Man With The Child In His Eyes        Kate Bush – OK maybe I wouldn’t really do the male pregnancy thing with Kate, but she is definitely my favourite female singer

5.15      Who – My favourite song from the Who from my favourite of their albums, the classic ‘Quadraphenia’

Sugar Sugar      Archies – This was the first single I ever bought. I got it from Uxbridge market in 1969

Suedehead       Morrissey – For me Stephen can be a bit hit or miss but this is definitely on the hit side

William It Was Really Nothing     Smiths – How could I not include the Smiths in this list and yes I am being just a tad egotistical with this choice

New Years Day  U2 – The piano refrain is haunting in a rock kind of way. Also more ego coming out here too, my birthday is on new years day!

Justified And Ancient    KLF and Tammy Wynette - There will never be anyone like the KLF. Were they a band or just art terrorists? Who knows and frankly who cares when they left songs and collaborations like this behind!

You Got The Love         The Source Featuring Candi Staton – Another uplifting song, although personally I tend to ignore the religious aspects! Recently Florence And The Machine have recorded a great cover of this song

Gimme Shelter  Rolling Stones – For me this song, especially the riff, evokes the 60s

It’s Only Rock N Roll     Rolling Stones – Now this is another I used to mime to as a teenager, well ok I still do! It might not be a pretty sight but I love doing it!

Hurricane          Bob Dylan – Dylan at his best, when riled or when he gets political he is untouchable. This song was about the plight of wrongly imprisoned boxer Reuben Carter

You Wear It Well            Rod Stewart – Most people I know would opt for Maggie May from his early 70s hits, I always preferred this one. Possibly even worth forgiving him for the awful ‘Baby Jane’ for

Wish You Were Here        Pink Floyd – One of the Floyd’s greatest and another song that gets me just a little emotional

You Can Make Me Dance Sing Or Anything        Rod Stewart And The Faces – I bet you can’t not dance to this. It’s one of the last songs the Faces recorded before Ron Wood and Rod the Mod left. It shows them going in a direction which I think would have been so good

Itchycoo Park    Small Faces – I actually remember hearing this on the radio as a kid. I didn’t have a clue what the lyrics were about then and I don’t think I’m much wiser now! Don’t go near the atrocious cover version by M People

Lowdown          Boz Scaggs - Taken from the excellent Silk Degrees album from 1976 and the track I use to soundcheck any new hi-fi equipment even now

I’m Your Puppet            James And Bobby Purify – This was actually a rerecording of their original 60s song. Guilty pleasure or great soul song? I’ll let you decide, but either way I love it!

Olympian          Gene – probably the best of the ‘Britpop’ bands, well in my opinion anyway. Sadly the band are no longer around, but I did manage to see them three times while they were. Another song that I will have played at my funeral in the very distant future too

Born To Run      Bruce Springsteen – I was always going to include something from the Boss and it was always going to be this song

Lose Yourself   Eminem - In my opinion Mr Mathers is the greatest rapper, although Jay Z does push him close

Too Late To Turn Back Now       Cornelius Brothers And Sister Rose – It took me more than 20 years to track down this song and now when I listen to it I reckon it is definitely a guilty pleasure

Stay Together   Suede – The most Bowie influenced of the 90s British bands. The combination of Brett Anderson’s lyrics and vocals along with Bernard Butler’s guitar is truly awesome

Skin Trade        Duran Duran - A Duran Duran song in my top 100? Yeah that surprised me too

1999     Prince – I love a lot of Prince’s stuff, but this remains a great party track

Susan’s House  Eels – Mark Everett is a superb songwriter and this for me is one of his best. His autobiography is bloody good too

Take A Look Around      Temptations – A terrific Norman Whitfield production and that intro still blows me away!

Let’s Get It On   Marvin Gaye – This great song has recently been sullied by it’s use to advertise pizzas on UK TV (I think it might have been Dominoes) But it still remains a great song for seduction and lurve

The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage          Smokey Robinson And The Miracles – Bob Dylan once described Smokey as the worlds greatest living poet. Listen to this song and you can see why!

Gimme A Little Sign       Brenton Wood – A great example of 60s soul and the song I sing most in the shower (along with the Monkees ‘I’m A Believer’)

The Love You Save       Jackson 5 – Another classic written for the boys by the Motown house writers billed as the Corporation

Staggerlee        Lloyd Price – Another story song and I reckon the best version by far

Once In A Lifetime         Talking Heads – The ‘Heads finest moment for me. This song has everything and makes me happy everytime I hear it

Pyjamarama      Roxy Music – Roxy before they became bland and frankly shit!

Song 2    Blur – Funny isn’t how the songs with barely any lyrics often sound so good. Whoo Hoo indeed!

Double Barrel    Dave And Ansel Collins – Another slice of superb reggae. For years I thought these guys were brothers, they’re not. Actually it’s Ansel Collins and Dave Barker.

Sorted For E’s And Whizz          Pulp – Jarvis Cocker is a lyrical genius and this is Pulp’s best example of his way with words

Spinning Around           Kylie Minogue – OK so there is a certain appeal to the gold hot pants, but as modern disco goes this is brilliant. Gotta love Kylie!

Love Rollercoaster        Ohio Players – One of my favourite funk songs, expertly covered by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers but it wasn’t a patch on the original

Hey Hey My My        Neil Young – A great song and one which found a degree of infamy as it was quoted in Kurt Cobain’s suicide note

Grace     Jeff Buckley – How big a star would he have been had he lived? Probably one og=f the biggest I think

Satellite Of Love           Lou Reed – Taken from the Transformer album which was produced by Bowie and Mick Ronson. Listen carefully and you’ll hear Bowie on backing vocals

Hey Ya      Outkast – The ultimate party record of recent times, a great video too

Since I Left You            Avalanches – Aussie DJs/ dance act, I can’t believe that this wasn’t a bigger hit

Seven Nation Army        White Stripes – Jack White has recently been named man of the decade by some UK publications, perhaps with some justification. The riff alone on this is worth the top 100

White Horses      Jacky – OK clearly this theme from a 60s TV show (strangely enough it was called White Horses) is very much a guilty pleasure but I really love it. I think Jacky’s only other hit was ‘Rupert The Bear’

D’Yer Make ‘Er  Led Zeppelin – Taken from Houses Of The Holy and in many peoples opinion Zep’s worst song. But I like to be different and this piece of cod reggae is wonderfully irreverent

Wild Wood        Paul Weller – England’s finest living rock star perhaps? Well after Mr Bowie anyway

Stay With Me    Lorraine Ellison – How much emotion can you squeeze into a song, not much more than Lorraine Ellison does in fact. Ignore the David Essex cover of this song at all costs!

Young Americans    David Bowie – What he himself described as plastic soul and one of the songs I can recite the whole lyric of

My new favorite fashionista which has also recently been a fave of The Cobrasnake, Atlanta De Cadenet, has got it going on. I find her carefree just-slipped-into-this look and vibe insanely intriguing. On top of her nonchalant fashion sense, being Duran Duran bassist John Taylor’s daughter really doesn’t hurt either. Not only that but her mother is a gorgeous photographer and her stepmother happens to be a co-founder of Juicy Couture. This girl has all kinds of pop culture airs surrounding her…probably why she has such a cool diverse fashion wit about her.

I just got stood up for the second time in four days by the same person. Um? This is exactly what inspires bad pop songs about Boys. I just downgraded this guy -who is one of the coolest people I was friends with at Yahoo! from man to boy. Eh, time for a dance party:

1. Boys, Boys, Boys by Lady Gaga – although her boys show up, make out with her in the bleachers and buy her egss in the morning.

2. Boys – Ms. Spears sometimes needs them, so do I. Her boys know she is the one in control like Janet, Miss Jackson if you’re nasty.

3. Wild Boys- Duran Duran knew how to shine. They were futuristic Mad Max kind of sexy boys who conquered murder by the roadside and let the phone ring while they were dancing in the rain. Now that’s hot.

4. Boys of Summer- Mr. Don Henley really knew that hormones rise in the sweltering heat of summer. He pleadges his townie love will last longer than those damn ‘Boys Of Summer.’

From The Backstreet Boys promising never to break our hearts to the UK’s Boyzone – No Matter What They Tell Us, I can’t say that I’ll ever give them up but in the mean time I’m waiting for some real men to who know how to set a time and date and place and ….show!

Music royalties and box-office takings for the film This Is It have brought in almost half-a-billion dollars to the King of Pop’s estate.The phenomenal flow of cash, which does not include income from Jackson souvenirs and memorabilia, more than covers the estimated £250million he owed. Administrators John Branca and John McClain still face at least six lawsuits, originally filed against the singer but now transferred to his estate.These include a £180million action by New Jersey based company AllGood Entertainment that claims Jackson reneged on a planned pay-per-view TV reunion concert with his brothers in Texas.Hollywood director John Landis, who made the singer’s 1983 Thriller video, is also suing for an undisclosed sum over alleged non- payment of his share of the profits.A spokesman for the administrators said yesterday: “Our attorneys are in negotiations with various parties on a number of unresolved issues. We expect these to be amicably resolved by early in the New Year.”Even hefty out-of-court settlements and legal fees won’t make much of a dent in Jackson’s posthumous fortune and future earning potential, according to financial experts.Jackson was already No3 on Forbes Magazine’s annual list of highest- grossing dead celebrities, behind fashion icon Yves St Laurent and composers Rodgers & Hammerstein, before This Is It was released last month. Fifteen-year-old Alyssa Bustamante aged considerably Wednesday when a Missouri judge ruled that she should be tried as an adult for allegedly strangling a 9-year-old neighbor a week after digging a grave for the girl.

The judge also entered a not guilty plea on her behalf after she was indicted on charges of first-degree murder. She is being held without bond.The teenager had told state police that she wanted to know what the experience was like, a highway patrol officer said.”Ultimately, she stated she wanted to know what it felt like,” Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. David Rice testified in court Wednesday.She also allegedly cut the girl’s throat and stabbed her.”She committed the murder after deliberation, which means cool deliberation or cool reflection on the matter for any length of time,” Cole County prosecutor Mark Richardson told the court Wednesday.Elizabeth Olten’s body was found in a wooded area near her home in St. Martins Oct. 23 after the suspect led police to it, after which she was arrested, authorities said. Music royalties and box-office takings for the film This Is It have brought in almost half-a-billion dollars to the King of Pop’s estate.The phenomenal flow of cash, which does not include income from Jackson souvenirs and memorabilia, more than covers the estimated £250million he owed. Administrators John Branca and John McClain still face at least six lawsuits, originally filed against the singer but now transferred to his estate.These include a £180million action by New Jersey based company AllGood Entertainment that claims Jackson reneged on a planned pay-per-view TV reunion concert with his brothers in Texas.Hollywood director John Landis, who made the singer’s 1983 Thriller video, is also suing for an undisclosed sum over alleged non- payment of his share of the profits.A spokesman for the administrators said yesterday: “Our attorneys are in negotiations with various parties on a number of unresolved issues. Fifteen-year-old Alyssa Bustamante aged considerably Wednesday when a Missouri judge ruled that she should be tried as an adult for allegedly strangling a 9-year-old neighbor a week after digging a grave for the girl.

The judge also entered a not guilty plea on her behalf after she was indicted on charges of first-degree murder. She is being held without bond.The teenager had told state police that she wanted to know what the experience was like, a highway patrol officer said.”Ultimately, she stated she wanted to know what it felt like,” Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Todays WTF!!

Tonight is 80’s night, and I have big plans to go out and dance to 80’s music. In honor of that, we need some Duran Duran. I don’t think you need to look any further for the ultimate image of cheezy, flamboyant, brainless 80’s pop. Duran Duran pretty well embodies all the evils, real or imagined, of 80’s blockbuster pop music. Let’s see, there’s nonsensical but catchy songs, priapic heterosexuality disguised under globs of makeup and ozone-burning amounts of hairspray, heavy use of newfangled electronic nechnology, big budget but nonsesical videos featuring prancing models, terrible clothing, Patrick Nagel designed album covers, vocals technically excellent but emotionless and impersonal, love of electric keyboards, supermodel marriages and their own line of dildos (true!) – yes, it’s 80’s teen pop at it’s love-it-or-hate-it best.

Ontem, depois de abrir minha caixa de e-mail e ver uma coisa linda, a vontade de tirar fotos cresceu ainda mais – digamos que a pessoa que me enviou o e-mail me “inspirou”. Daí fui até o Boulevard, descendo pela Doca, passei no Lider – ainda estou no esquema pilha-câmera-de-4.7mpx… Anyway….

Quando cheguei ao Boulevard, haviam dois violinistas…eu pensei, caramba, já estamos em época de Natal! Pra mim ainda não caiu a ficha…nem ontem, nem hoje, não sei ao certo quando vai cair…essas coisas às vezes demoram pra mim.

Só sei que comecei a caminhar pelo Shopping e mesmo com toda a decoração de Natal eu ainda não me senti invadida pelo espírito Natalino…já teve Natal que eu só fui me dar conta que o Natal havia passado quando já era Ano Novo…mas bem sei o motivo…era um efeito “Amy Winehouse”, quando você nem se dá conta do que está acontecendo ao seu redor – porque você só quer sobreviver àquele período…

Esse ano talvez seja o mesmo. Embora eu esteja beeem mais otimista em relação à vida que em outros anos, talvez justamente por eu não ser mais católica o Natal não tenha mais o mesmo sentido para mim. Na verdade nunca teve o mesmo sentido. Pra mim Natal sempre teve mais a ver com reunir a família e trocar presentes, comemorar o que foi feito de bom durante o ano que comemorar o nascimento do deus cristão ou algo assim. Mas se você prestar atenção ao mundo ao seu redor, mesmo que você seja católico, vai perceber que o Natal que temos hoje em dia pouco tem a ver com Jesus.

Só que a questão é que o Natal que eu deveria comemorar feliz em família, não estou tão animada assim…é porque pra começo de conversa estou aqui com meus pais, e meu coração está em casa, no Rio de Janeiro. Típico. Porque deveria ser diferente?

Talvez até o Natal eu me ilumine…

Aí voltemos ao meu olho fotográfico, que pegou algumas shots da arquitetura do Boulevard. Quando vi alguns meninos tocando no Rock Band. A primeira coisa que veio à minha mente foi: “se o rock band fosse com instrumentos de verdade, eu já teria um baterista pra minha banda.” A segunda coisa que veio à minha mente foi: “se o rock band fosse com instrumentos de verdade, o rock de Belem estava salvo”. A última coisa que veio à minha mente naquele momento foi: “caramba, eu tenho que voltar pro Rio de Janeiro LOGO!”

Daí não resisti e me apresentei, fiz amizade e os garotos tocaram Hungry Like the Wolf, do Duran duran, comigo. Juntou muita gente pra olhar – e eu que sempre achei que nem canto tão bem assim…mas percebi que minha voz chegava até a praça de alimentação. Chamei a atenção, o que pra um cantor/cantora é grande coisa.

Anyway, só sei que depois disso ficou um vazio enorme, porque pra quem já trabalhou uma vida toda com isso ficar na base do joguinho não tem a menor graça e eu sinto falta da coisa real. Honestamente, é a mesma coisa que trocar um bofe muito bom de cama por um vibrador. Quebra o galho mas não é a mesma coisa. E música, muitas vezes, pra quem faz, é mais gratificante que sexo.

Quando desci ao primeiro piso, tinha um show com direito a papai Noel e sino e tudo o mais…

…que também não me animou nem um pouco, exceto pelo fato do baixista dali se parecer demais com o Mick Karn. E o cara era baixista! Quer dizer, ele não parecia tanto assim, lembrava.

Mas foi bom ver música com instrumentos de verdade. Mesmo que sendo jingles de Natal. Mas de qualquer maneira, o espírito de Natal ainda não veio. Ainda não…pelo menos o breve passeio serviu pra fazer umas fotos interessantes – mostro num outro post – e pra eu me lembrar de como é gostoso de vez em quando andar por aí sozinha, sem rumo, fotografando o que der sorte de aparecer, sem depender de horários ou afazeres de ninguém.

Eu sozinha comigo mesma.

É claro que, depois de chegar em casa, catei minha guitarra, a Hajime, e fui me concentrar no que me faz feliz: o bom e velho rock and roll.

Just about to head out for tea with Pippa (Madame Says fame) and Jack (fresh from DJing with Girlcore as an honorary Spanish Lady) and I’m whiling away the hours by plodding through the 6 months worth of French Vogues piled up on my floor as my 3rd lot of pre-holiday washing finishes.

All I can say is that I would officially HATE to be a Le Bon child… can you imagine having this amazing 44 nearly 45 year old creature as your MOTHER? Especially when you have Simon’s genes as well as his surname….. I’m not being cruel but c’mon Simon was never the skinniest Durannie now was he. OK so the frilled shirts never helped anybody, agreed.

In my teens at the Rio tour concert Mr Le Bon patted me on the head.

I wasn’t best pleased as I’d only pushed to the very front because I was sure that John Taylor would notice me in my stripy T-shirt pouting (I thought) like Kim Wilde in The Kids video.

Naturally he didn’t…. too busy slapping base…. and I’d not figured that my outfit was more Team Simon than Taylor.

All epically great music videos should contain at least eight of the following:

- Political incorrectness

- Weird juxtapositions

- Obscure and symbolic (NOT direct) references to at least one taboo sexual perversion or drug

- Mythical archetypes turned into high camp

- At least one prominently sparkly thing, even if it’s a B&W video (remember those Flock of Seagulls videos? That, but maybe less).

- Sunglasses. Or some type of interesting spectacles.

- Some tie-in with the lyrics, but not so much it becomes over-literal and fussy.

- Creative storyline (think Common and Mary J. Blige’s “Come Close to Me,” where Common proposes marriage to his deaf girlfriend he’s just had a fight with, by standing on her lawn drawing a cue-card rebus to go with the song lyrics)

- At least one tastefully tongue-in-cheek phallic or sexual symbol (my favorite: Devo’s “That’s Good”… that repeated cartoon of a french fry going into a doughnut)

- Twisted, campy references to classic films, novels, comics or anything that permeates our cultural consciousness

- At least one caricatured angry authority figure (parent, teacher, cop etc) (The Kinks, “Come Dancing”… Beastie Boyz, “Fight for your Right (to Party)”… this was more popular in the 80’s I think…)

- Exaggerated gestures and facial expressions (think anything Van Halen), or, conversely… studiously understated “cool” gestures (think Digable Planets, Snoop Dogg)

- Art that comes to life (optional)

- Food that comes to life (optional)

- Musical instruments that come to life (optional)

- Musical instruments that combust (please, just one is enough per video)

- At least one child, often cast into an ambiguously appropriate and ironic adult role (I love Jill Scott’s video for “Gimme,” where she’s a sexy nurse followed by sick children who suddenly can get up and dance)

- Awesome choreography (ALL MJ videos)

- References to insanity (Bjork “Violently Happy,” David Bowie “Look Back in Anger”)

- Irony, even unwitting irony

- Big hair, no hair, long hair, blue hair… some kind of hair extreme going on

- Disturbing visual imagery (optional, depending on song)

- Humor (less optional)

- Both of the above at once

- Dreamlike, smooth transitions between scenes

- Special effects only to fit the mood/narrative.

What is NOT necessary for a good music video:

- Booty close-ups

- Gratuitous sexuality

- Gratuitous and overdone special effects

- Maudlin, heavyhanded political memes and themes

- References to drugs and top-shelf sexual perversions without the slightest trace of irony

- Excessive instrument/hand close-ups

- Anything where the band plays on a beach, on top of a tall building, a mountain, a boat… (yawn… cliché alert… although I did love U2’s “Gloria” and Duran Duran’s “Rio” videos back in the 80’s)

- Choppy, jarring transitions

- Zooming in and out repeatedly (excuse me, some of us are epileptic)

- Words superimposed unnecessarily on footage, as if to provide visual Cliff’s Notes to the action (you’ll see a lot of this in French and African videos…)

- Excessive food references (I am still haunted, to this day, of that horrible Wall of Voodoo video from the 80’s where everyone is drowning in baked beans… not to mention INXS’s “The One Thing”)

- Any, any, any form of pixelized or other cheesy image fades… except when done to create a mock 80’s effect.

- Too many women in one video… destroys the narrative effect

- Humans morphing into ferocious wild animals… biggest video cliché on the planet (think Sade)

- Sentimentality or over-seriousness about romance… unless you’re making karaoke videos (think Alicia Keys)

- Any form of leopard-skin print clothing, Greek columns (unless used ironically, as in Soft Cell’s magnificent, insanely perfect video for “Tainted Love” which contains just about every video “DO” listed above)

- Any visual imagery so completely disgusting or disturbing that people can’t even watch it. That differs for everyone… for example, I think Aphex Twin’s “Rubber Johnny” and “Come to Daddy” videos are fantastic, but they disturb me too much to watch them. I get nightmares.

- Over-selfconsciousness, narcissistic imagery (most rap videos…)

- Over-fixation on the symbols of luxury and wealth (ditto, although many 80’s videos were guilty of this distraction from good-video content as well)

- Over-repeated samples

- Distasteful focus on death or body functions

- Meaningless, weird or random stock photo footage that doesn’t fit the mood of the song

- Footage that is very obviously stock footage

- Special effects that can quickly be named by anyone who knows the editing software

- Destroying more than two cars, three guitars, or one building… kids are starving in Africa, man. Do you really need to blow up four guitars??

- Obviously underage girls (or boys) in sexually compromising situations

- Cheesy metaphors for sexual body parts (think Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back”)

I am totally excited that Duran Duran are reissuing a 2-disc remastering of the album So Red the Rose by Arcadia!

It’s due in the United States and Europe in February 2010.

Arcadia, of course, was the brilliant side project formed in 1985 by Nick Rhodes, Simon Lebon and Roger Taylor while John Taylor and Andy Taylor were away in the Power Station.

The first disc contains the original nine tracks on the original album as well as seven bonus tracks! The bonus tracks come from the soundtrack for the movie Playing for Keeps as well as the extended singles of “Election Day,” “Goodbye Is Forever,” “The Promise” and “The Flame.”

The second disc has mixes of those four singles as well as “Rose Arcana” and “Say the Word.”

The package also contains a DVD, which has videos for “Election Day,” “The Promise,” “Goodbye Is Forever,” “The Flame,” and “Missing” as well as films on the making of them.

The Arcadia project issued some completely wonderful New Romantic songs. The band’s sole album long has suffered from being underrated even by music enthusiasts who recognize its value. I personally always felt Nick and Simon should have revisited music in the vein of Arcadia in the 1990s after the Duran Duran Wedding Album, when they became the only two original members of the band to carry on recording and performing.

All the same, this is great news and a worthy addition to the music collection.

Two decades later, ’80s icons keep the beat

After an almost 20-year hiatus from most of the original members, ’80s synthpop, rock and New Wave icons—as well as fashion revelers—Duran Duran have rejoined forces with past members, arriving in a scene that has bred a new base of fans that include Justin Timberlake and Timbaland.

The release of Duran Duran’s newest album, 2007’s Red Carpet Massacre, has brought out a band that still sports noteworthy appeal. While suffering through the realization that some things are better kept in the past—original Duran Duran member Andy Taylor departed after their Reportage recording sessions—they are willing to move forward with their sound, staying true to themselves while cutting through musical red tape.

ENVY was lucky enough to catch up with Duran Duran’s drummer, Roger Taylor, and discuss what has kept the band ticking and how they continue to keep their world audiences happy.

ENVY: How does it feel to be back with the original members—well, most of the original members—of Duran Duran after all these years?

Roger Taylor: It’s been a great experience. It’s been great to reach back into your past a little bit, and it gets me going again. Something we all thought that maybe had gone away . . . water under the bridge. I didn’t think it was going to happen, but thank God we all came together at the right time, and it’s been a really good experience for us. And I hope it continues for a long time.

Was it hard to get back into the groove of things?

No, it was easy. The music was easy, and we gelled very easily as musicians. None of us have gone off in diverse, ridiculous directions. Like, you know, no one kind of got into jazz, sitars or whatever. We all kind of retained the same musical ideologies, so that was pretty easy.

Has the whole process been easy, though?

I think getting the personalities back together was probably harder, because, if you imagine going back to your school friends, 15 or 20 years ago, and trying to go o ut with them for dinner, and you haven’t seen them for God knows how many years, everybody has changed. Everybody has developed their personality in different directions, so it’s quite hard to pull everybody back in as a group.

Was that why Andy left?

I don’t think that process ever really worked with Andy. I think that’s the reason he probably left. I think he was the one person that never really managed to do that [to bond].

How was it to work with Timbaland and with Justin Timberlake?

A lot of the fans didn’t like it, because they thought that we were going too much in a different direction, and we’re going to become part of the Timbaland music factory, and we were going to kind of lose our identity. I don’t think we did that. I don’t think we lost our identiy because Timbaland and Justin were just such huge fans of the band, so they never allowed that to happen. They kind of respected our integrity—our musical integrity—and I think they made sure it was a Duran Duran album.

Now that you can tour to nations you couldn’t before, would you say audiences are different abroad? If so, how?

I think every concert and its audiences is different. I think the US, for us, is really up there. It’s one of the greatest audiences, the most appreciative for us, and so is Europe. South America is really up there. The further south, the wilder the audiences become. By the time you get down to Argentina, they’re like football crowds; they’ve got banners, and they’re singing along, and they know every part of the song. They’re just incredible audiences . . . but every audience in every country is different. It’s good for different reasons. We love our European audiences. They’re great, but they all respond differently.

Duran Duran plays in Grand Prairie December 2 at Nokia Theatre and December 5 in Houston at Verizon Wireless Theater.

DURAN Duran have turned to hit maker Cathy Dennis, 40, after suffering a bout of writers’ block.

Singer Simon Le Bon, 51, was struggling with lyrics to the band’s Mark Ronson-produced album.

He said: “A three-day session in the studio with Cathy seems to have done the trick for me.

“Yes, she is celebrated for her work with Kylie Minogue and Katy Perry, and no, you won’t hear me singing that ‘I kissed a boy and I liked it’, even if in the past I have and I did.”

In mid-2004, my roomate/friend Ryan Waller was invited to show work in San Diego at the Selective Hearing Gallery (RIP) run by RE:UP creator Josh Lynne (thx). Ryan asked me if I wanted to join and make it a two-man show, which sounded rad to me. We made a decent amount of stuff, but not quite enough… some good, mostly bad, but we had fun and San Diego was a blast. Everything we made was silkscreened onto square wooden panels. Here are two type pieces that seemed to continue the visual trend started with the Garden and Tree pieces, using type as image in a loose, hand-drawn manner.

The name of the show was The Unbearable Brightness of Neon, whose premise was to ostensibly to examine the fun and rituals of summertime, thus the beach-themed nature of these two pieces. There were plenty of other image-based pieces as well, but there was one that felt like a minor breakthrough for me. I started with a type style that I had been drawing in my sketchbooks, a sort of post-Babyteeth pseudo-cursive where all letters and words are joined, with mixed cases and combining outlined forms with linear forms. It looked like this:

Taking this general approach, I adapted it in illustrator onto a 45° grid, and extruded the general forms into linear and curvilinear elements. For content, I took choice lines from a descriptive record review. It is titled “Why I Love Duran Duran”.

The show was a bit of a failure, the gallery lost money and we only sold a few posters and one piece to the gallery owner. But, lesson learned, and we had fun, and I was interested in exploring this new angular style a bit more.

Há um ano atrás, nesse mesmo horário, meu coração tava pulando ao som de The Valley…na verdade eu tinha passado perto de um desmaio, ou taquicardia, ou coisa que o valha, porque meus braços ficaram dormente e minha vista momentaneamente escureceu…eu havia acabado de ver, na minha frente, meu ídolo, meu role-model, meu amado Simon Lebon.

Não me lembro de ter gritado tanto em minha vida. xD Aliás, dá pra ouvir meu grito no vídeo. XD

Foi um momento mágico…depois de anos de espera – e bota anos nisso, mais de dez – eu finalmente tinha o prazer e – porque não? – a HONRA de ver o Duran duran ao vivo. E o que é melhor: na pista vip, na grade, a mais ou menos um metro e meio dos caras.

Foi um dos momentos mais inesquecíveis de minha vida…e muito mais adorável porque lá haviam pessoas muito importantes pra mim (tirando as que estavam no palco, claro xD):  Juliana, amiga de infância, duranie tão loca quanto eu, e Fabíola, minha sis querida, alien newro de marte sem a qual a grande maioria das minhas alegrias do último ano não teriam sido possíveis…foi, certamente, um momento memorável. Mas um momento ainda mais mágico viria a acontecer dois dias depois.

E daqui a dois dias eu conto. A não ser que você consiga achar nos meus arquivos do dia   25 de Novembro de 2008. Aí eu não preciso contar nada.
