New EU PMP ruling… Could an American Version be On Its Way?
Thanks to a new European Union ruling, any Personal Music Player (PMP) sold in Europe will need to have a lower default volume level to avoid ear damage.  These “safe exposure” levels will be on all new MP3 players, including Apple’s iPod, although users will be able to override the settings if they choose.
The ruling also calls for more conspicuous information on the dangers of hearing loss caused by loud earphones to be included on PMP packaging.  According to research from the EU, listening to high-level music for one hour per day for five years could lead to permanent hearing loss, and thanks to the popularity of the iPod this decade, things could get really bad for the ears of people worldwide. One must wonder if the US will be the next major country to introduce such a measure.

A blog entry that’s purely visual today because I’m lazy like that. Plus it allows a follow-up of sorts to my last entry, which seemed 60% preoccupied with ’80s boxing without this site becoming little more than a bunch of disperate pugilism-themed missives. It’s easy to deify the matter-of-fact main event and undercard listings of fight posters from earlier in the 20th century, with their densely columned mass of names, prices and occasional boasts of prowess, plus some killer typography, but I was raised in the Don King and Frank Warren ruled time when the heavyweights like Tyson, Berbick and Holmes, and middleweights as powerful as Duran and Hagler entertained.

It was a big budget era of pay-per-view, HBO and that damned crown logo, and I’m easily suckerpunched by this lurid aesthetic. From the unique, kinetic imagery of LeRoy Neiman to treated photos, to bold taglines and Bud logos, these battles were treated in promotional terms as EVENTS – cinematic grudge matches. Whether they’re cable TV promos, onsite posters, booze sponsorships, or closed circuit screenings, these, in my eyes, are sporting materpieces.

Although I am not an avid boxing fan, I have seen my fair share of boxing bouts.  As a former collegiate athlete, I realize what it takes to train, get in shape, sacrifice and be dedicated. 

Just for fun I tried boxing for three minutes with a boxing heavy bag.  After about 39 seconds of punching non-stop (okay, kidding on the 39 seconds), I was very winded.  Are you aware that boxing bouts can be 10 or 15 rounds?  That would take incredible stamina.

In addition, during a boxing bout the cornerman for a boxer is key.  They coach.  They instruct.  They inspire.  They counsel.  They manage the fight for the boxer.  I have seen many great boxers during my life, and they all had great cornermen.  Boxers such as Frazier, Ali, Spinks, Leonard, Duran, Hagler, Tyson, Hearns, Mayweather, on and on. 

This made me stop and think about life’s cornermen (insert cornerwomen if applicable). Cornermen offer valuable services to life not just boxing.  They help you.  They are there for you.  They have your best interest in focus. 

I am blessed to inform you that I have a number of cornermen in my life.  Becki Heeres.  Jack Heeres.  Greg Kelley.  Craig Owens.  Clark Ver Hulst.  Just to name a few.  I am also a cornerman for folks.  It is very rewarding responsibility, but the corner is a very serious place to be too. 

Life can be difficult.  It can even seem like a fight.  Better check your corner.  Make sure you have people there for you.  And make sure you are in the corner for folks in return.

La primavera  del descontento continúa con una manifestación contra la concejala presidente Eva Durán el próximo lunes 22. Lo que empezó en un pleno de la Junta con desalojo de algunos de los vecinos, va tomando otros caminos. Como ya indicamos en un post del 10 de junio, el barrio está calentito. Y el verano promete subida de máximas. La oposición política parece que sigue fuera de juego.

Entretanto, unos terroristas han matado hoy a un trabajador vasco.
