[ DVD-John: Life in Jail for Mailed DVD? ]

I had one hell of a day doing nothing in particular.

Remember when I said, “The reality is that …. a [system of small-scale, organic food production] may only ever exist for the relatively deep-pocketed and/or truly industrious among us?” Well I’m not that industrious. I do, however, have a credit card. So, I started my day with some grocery shopping, as I had very little in my fridge other than a door full of condiments that my ex and I had accumulated over 2.5 years of road trips. Anyway, two rather small grocery bags and $100 later, I have some organic shit in my fridge and much shallower pockets. I also proved my point that, for those who are not truly industrious, eating only healthy food requires chedda. At some point I will have to look up local co-ops. I wouldn’t be able to choose what produce I would get, but I (hopefully) would then avoid having to choose between bankruptcy and the degeneration of my vital organs. I feel liberated already.

For lunch I met a friend at Bouchon Bakery in the Time Warner Center. The extravagance of the TWC never ceases to amaze me. Maybe it’s all the glass. Maybe it’s because I know that Per Se, Masa, and Cafe Grey are right upstairs. Maybe it’s because it houses one of the only free-standing Joseph Abboud stores I’ve ever seen. Or maybe it’s because even the “fast food” is of the Thomas Keller variety. Literally. Regardless, we sat and ate our grilled veggie sandwiches (which were good, but pedestrian by Keller standards) and discussed our artistic pursuits, along with a book that we plan to co-author. There’s nothing more exciting than plans. Anyway, if all goes well, you can expect our book to hit shelves in late 2009. We will need some prayers and maybe a miracle — that’s where you come in.

I returned home and began installation of doubleTwist, which was a CLUSTER FUCK. I should’ve known not to do it, since Mercury is in retrograde, which (my Mother tells me) invokes technological poltergeist. You know … like in Poltergeist. Anyway, the program is brilliant and I officially want to bear the children of creator, Jon Lech Johansen, a Norwegian hacker who works under the pseudonym, “DVD-Jon.” Basically, doubleTwist enables their users (i.e. music owners stripped of basic property rights through Apple’s adhesion contracts) to strip iTunes files of their protective coating (“DRM”) so that they are operable in other mp3 players, cell phones, and video game consoles. For more on doubleTwist, see my post on Guest of a Guest. Anyway, I can’t even get into what I’ve been going through trying to circumvent iTunes (which I believe has downloaded something onto my laptop that prevents me from accessing the doubleTwist website — I know this because I have two computers; one with iTunes installed and one without. I can only access doubleTwist on the computer that is sans iTunes.). To sum it up, FUCK APPLE, THEIR STUPID FUCKING MARKETING CAMPAIGN AND THEIR CRAPPY FUCKING I-POD! AND TELL STEVE JOBS FIRST TO GO FUCK HIMSELF AND THEN TO COME TO NYC AND CLEAN MY APARTMENT BECAUSE HE OWES ME SOMETHING AND THAT IS WHAT I’D LIKE.

At some point during the day I sat on the phone with the Sony’s warranty people. More adhesion contracts, more agita, more back pain.

*sigh*

The night ended with an 8:30 showing of “There Will Be Blood.” Despite the fact that it was entirely too long, I loved it; however, I couldn’t tell you why. There is a lot to unpack. More on that at a later date — after some sleep, a $5 organic blue-green algae bar, and maybe a glass of organic carrot juice.

I alle fall – når DVD-Jon nå har lansert doubleTwist løser han et kolossalt irritasjonsmoment for oss som av en eller annen grunn ikke har lyst til å gå rundt bare med dingser med en halvspist-eple-logo på. iTunes er en bra nettbutikk å kjøpe musikk på, men hva hjelper det hvis man ikke vil ha iPod? Nå kan jeg altså omsider konvertere de proprietære AAC-filene til Apple til MP3 og ta med meg musikken ut på min MP3-spiller når jeg skal ut å løpe.

Neida, jeg har ikke til hensikt å snyte noen for inntekter. Jeg vil bare spille mine surt kjøpte musikkfiler hvor jeg vil og med hva slags dings jeg vil. Takk, Jon!

CHAMONIX, França (Reuters) – Uma empresa iniciante fundada pelo famoso hacker norueguês “DVD Jon” lançou na terça-feira um serviço que permite a usuários copiar e utilizar canções da loja online da Apple iTunes em muitos players de música não fabricados pela empresa.

O serviço da nova companhia, chamada doubleTwist, facilitará a usuários a troca de arquivos de áudio, fotos e vídeos, criados por eles ou produzidos profissionalmente, por meio de computadores, certos dispositivos móveis ou pelo console portátil PSP, da Sony.

Além da troca de arquivos de mídia entre computadores, o serviço doubleTwist permite aos usuários transferir arquivos de mídia existentes em seus computadores a aparelhos móveis, por meio de um sistema simples que envolve arrastar o arquivo para uma pasta que envia cópias dos arquivos pela Web aos aparelhos.

O software permite inicialmente a transferência de arquivos ao PSP, celulares série N da Nokia, às linhas Walkman e Cybershot de celulares da Sony Ericsson e para celulares inteligentes equipados com o sistema operacional Windows Mobile, como o Palm Treo e os modelos da HTC .

Os usuários poderão definir que arquivos de mídia desejam compartilhar com que amigos. O software da doubleTwist converte mídia armazenada em um dado formato a tipos de aquivos usados em outros aparelhos, o que torna possível criar listas de execução comuns que reproduziriam canções da iTunes em aparelhos que não sejam da Apple, de acordo com a empresa.

O truque utilizado pela doubleTwist para abrir os formatos protegidos contra cópia é executar uma canção em modo acelerado e capturar uma cópia da faixa de áudio, regravando-a. Trata-se essencialmente do mesmo processo usado na cópia de um CD para um computador.

“Os usuários só poderão executar a música que já tenham comprado e estejam autorizados a executar”, disse Monique Farantzos, 34, co-fundadora e presidente-executiva da doubleTwist.

O sistema consegue converter cerca de 100 canções em meia hora. A doubleTwist estima que o truque resulte em cerca de cinco por cento de degradação na qualidade sonora, perda semelhante à registrada na duplicação de um CD. Amigos poderão ouvir as canções enviadas por usuários da doubleTwist mesmo que não tenham adquirido direitos de reprodução sobre elas, disse a empresa.

Representantes da doubleTwist afirmam que a empresa não está permitindo a troca desenfreada de aquivos. “O que nós estamos facilitando é amigos mandando coisas entre si”, disse Farantzos.

A doubleTwist também revelou que recebeu investimento inicial da norueguesa NorthZone Ventures e da suíça Index Ventures, que foi uma apoiadora inicial de Skype, Last.fm e MySQL antes da venda dessas empresas a outras companhias maiores.

Aos 16 anos, na Noruega, Jon Johansen disparou controvérsia internacional quando publicou na Web o código para produção de softwares capazes de quebrar a proteção contra cópia de DVDs.

Agora com 24, Johansen, vice-presidente de tecnologia da doubleTwist, continua na linha de frente de tais controvérsias, entrando em brigas com Apple por causa de seus esforços para ajudar os consumidores a “libertarem” suas músicas do sistema de proteção contra cópias da iTunes.

No hemos oído nada sobre DVD Jon desde hace mucho tiempo, y es que el joven noruego, pesadilla de Apple, ha estado trabajando en su nuevo software: doubleTwist.

Esta aplicación permite compartir archivos multimedia entre aparatos como ordenadores, teléfonos, consolas, etc. Según Monique Farantzos, co-fundadora de doubleTwist, los archivos multimedia se han vuelto “una torre de Babel, frustrando a los consumidores”… y aquí viene la parte que no le gustará a Steve Jobs; podrás compartir “tu lista de reproducción de iTunes” con un Nokia serie-N, un Walkman de Sony Ericsson, o un teléfono con Windows Mobile.

No sabemos si Apple terminará diciendo algo al respecto, pero no nos asombraría que intenten desactivar el software en su próxima versión de iTunes, en todo caso, por ahora puedes descargarlo siguiendo el enlace Leer.

If this as good as the article says that this is, then the big companies trying to get in the way and not letting us do what we want with the content we own are over and DRM will be dead. 

Firmafest writes to let us know that ‘DVD Jon’ Lech Johansen’s company has released an open beta of DoubleTwist, a desktop application that allows the user to copy media to any device. There’s a Facebook app too. The software is available for download at Doubletwistventures.com. Currently only Windows is supported, but a Macintosh version is on the way.

A couple of years ago a kid from Norway, named Jon Lech Johansen, broke the encryption put on DVD’s to stop people from coping them onto their computers. A year or so later he did the same thing to the iTunes music store and made it possible for folks to share their music purchases. He was pretty unpopular with the big media companies but geek-boys the world over loved him, so he went legit and started a venture backed company. However, going legit isnt what it used to be. His latest application, let’s you share your music and other media with friends and family no matter what device they might be using. The new application called doubleTwist allows you to convert all your iTunes purchases to plain old mp3’s for you can shares them across devices. and it help you manage that process. The application is still in beta (early beta if the number of crashes I’ve had is any indicator) so you might want to check out the PDF press release here , the blog reaction here or the early articles here and here.

Pues este tipo es Jon Lech Johansen, un Cracker Noruego que a los 4 días de que salió el iphone lo hackeó xD, ha encontrado la forma de poder usar el nuevo teléfono de Apple sin necesidad de firmar un contrato de dos años con la operadora AT&T ni facilitar nuestros datos personales. Eso sí, sólo ha conseguido activar sus opciones multimedia y la conexión a Internet por Wi-Fi. No podrá usarlo para llamar por teléfono ni enviar mensajes.

A este wey también se le conoce como DVD Jon ya que en 2001 participó en la creación de DeCSS, un programa que desencripta los DVDs protegidos para que podamos grabarlos y hacer copias (ha sido juzgado dos veces por ello, sin sentencia firme en contra). En un artículo de su blog, titulado So Sue Me (en inglés, “Venga, demandadme”), ha publicado las líneas de código necesarias para “romper” el sistema de seguridad del registro del iPhone en iTunes.

DVD のコピープロテクション CSS をクラックしたことで有名なエースハッカー DVD Jon こと Jon Lech Johansen が、iPhone のアクティベーションプロセスをクラックした。Phone Activation Server v1.0 はウインドウズのソフトだが、iPhone の機能を使えるようにするのに必要な登録をくぐり抜ける。アクティベーションしなきゃ、iPhone はレンガ同然だ。

Ace hacker DVD Jon, AKA Jon Lech Johansen (known for breaking the CSS protection on DVDs), has cracked the activation process on the iPhone. Phone Activation Server v1.0 is a Windows application which will bypass the registration required to unlock the iPhone’s functions. Without activation, the iPhone is a brick.

どういう意味かって？　あなたが手にしているのは 600 ドルの 8GB iPod だということだよ。ということは、メールやインターネットができるということでもある。電話や EDGE 機能以外のことならなんでも出来るというわけ。もちろん WiFi も可能だよ。

What does this mean? It means that you have a $600 8GB iPod. It also means you have a mail and internet device. Everything works except the phone and EDGE functions, but WiFi is a go.

But it’s not just plug and play. You’ll need to know what you are doing, as Jon says, “this application will not do anything unless you understand the magic numbers as well as add the hosts entry.” That’s Greek to me, but if you try it, tell us about it in the comments.

Hoje o blog voltou a receber muitas visitas nos tópicos que dediquei ou citei o vídeo da Daniella Cicarelli transando na praia de Cadiz. Graças ao advogado dela, Rubens Decoussau Tilkian, que saiu dizendo aos quatros ventos que a Justiça Brasileira iria fechar o You Tube.

Essa idéia do sistema judiciário fechar o You Tube, mais o projeto ridículo do Eduardo Azeredo, a Via Crucis com as Americanas.com e também a forma como o Submarino – o site que não sabe fazer validação no servidor – se comportou em relação aos textos publicados pelo Bruno Torres só deixa claro que a internet ainda é bicho-papão, inclusive para quem vive dela e para ela.

É difícil saber com reagir com as mudanças e implicações que esse bicho-papão trouxe e ainda trará nas relações sociais e políticas, pessoais, econômicas e vários aspectos do cotidiano. Mais difícil ainda é saber se as mudança são/serão boas ou ruins.

O importante é esquecer que se tiver medo ou não se comportar direito, o bicho-papão te engole.

PS: Se alguém resolver me processar por ser mencionado aqui, vá em frente. Não renderá nada além de uma péssima imagem para si, garanto. E quem sabe eu viro um DVD Jon?

In reply to Ars Technica’s Infinite Loop regarding DVD Jon’s DoublePlay, a venture to turn bypassing Apple’s Fairplay DRM into a business:

The second issue, making it possible to play songs purchased from the iTunes store on ugly, brown media players would definitely seem to violate the DMCA.

But would it still be considered illegal DRM circumvention if Jon implements it as a way to play legally purchased songs on non-Apple players?

What if as opposed to removing Fairplay from iTunes downloads, Jon implements a way for non-Apple media players to check for digital signatures already in users’ iTunes installation, and use the signatures to play back said media?

In a way, replicating how iPods interact with iTunes without removing in-media DRM and using independently developed non-Apple code…

The real question isn’t even whether Apple Legal will “test” this in court, but whether there are any companies that want to be Johansen’s guinea pigs.

If one would suppose that we now live in the Bubble 2.0 era, could one not imagine this question as not being so rhetorical? Perhaps by selling DoublePlay as a high-risk, high-return investment; a ticket to enter the highly lucrative iTunes market? New players would be competing not with iTunes, but with iPods.

Alternative players can either compete with iPods on physical design, on features, or on price. And with all those cheapo MP3 players coming out of Taiwan…

A bit of back story: I encountered the Infinite Loop post via Copyfight. The Infinite Loop article covers a story I first discovered at CNN Money via Google News. Copyfight echoed some good (IMHO) analyses from Infinite Loop, but Infinite Loop’s Dvorakian style silo building language left a tinge of copper on my tounge. I had initially resolved to post this at Copyfight, but I got slammed into the DBSL wall several times, over and over again. After several physical meat-space punches into some nearby concrete walls and calming down (consequence of living in a 3rd world country, I suppose: cheapest way to get online is via a CDMA-1x RTT cellular provider (StarOne) with a Dynamic IP address) I resolved to post the reply at Infinite Loop. I guess I missed where its supposed to say that HTML replies would be properly formatted. Some more wall punching and yelling, and here I am at my FLOSS blog.

I’m still feeling very impotent and slightly angry. I just hope some of my message gets filtered from the noise.

DRM-buster DVD Jon has a new target in his sights, and it’s a big piece of fruit. He has reverse-engineered Apple’s Fairplay and is starting to license it to companies who want their media to play on Appleﾕs devices. Instead of breaking the DRM (something heﾕs already done), Jon has replicated it, and wants to license the technology to companies that want their content (music, movies, whatever) to play on Apple devices. This may not be good news for iTunes the [sic] store, but it could make the iPod even more popular.

Jon Lech Johansen became famous for hacking encrypted DVDs so they would play in Linux when he was 15, making him the target of criminal charges for which he was eventually acquitted. Last year he moved from Norway to San Diego to work for Michael Robertson. But the work — a digital locker for music — didn’t captivate Johansen, so he struck out on his own at the beginning of the summer.

ハッキングの腕を商売に

Twenty-two-year-old Johansen moved to San Francisco to work with Monique Farantzos, who had contacted him after reading a Wall Street Journal profile of him last fall. The two now live in the Mission District and devote their time to DoubleTwist Ventures, which is Johansen’s first major attempt at commercializing his hacking. They haven’t raised any outside money because they have already found at least one (undisclosed) paying customer.

Jobs との昼食会

Johansen は空威張りをするようなタイプではない。先週飲みにいったときもハイネケンビールにほとんで手をつけなかった。しかしかなり厚かましい方だ。Steve Jobs にメールを送って、この１月に昼食会をセットした話もしてくれた。

Johansen isn’t much of a swashbuckler; he barely touched his Heineken when we were out at drinks last week. But he has a lot of chutzpah, and related the story of how he emailed Steve Jobs and set up a lunch meeting in January.

アップルは訴訟を好まない

Johansen と Farantzos はクパチーノまで出かけて行って、キング Jobs の接見を受けた。もっとも Johansen は新会社の計画についてはあまり詳しく話してくれなかった。（正直のところ、現時点では彼ら自身あまりはっきりしていないようだった。）Jobs は明らかに彼らに警告したようだ。アップルは訴訟を好む会社ではないが、DVD Jon のやっていることがなんであれ、ほかの会社はすんなりは乗らないのじゃないか、といって・・・　オヤオヤ！

Johansen and Farantzos went down to Cupertino for an audience with King Jobs, but werenﾕt terribly specific about their new company’s plans (to be fair, at this point, they didn’t quite know what their plans were). Jobs apparently warned that while Apple was not a litigious company, other tech firms might not take kindly to whatever DVD Jon might be up to. Ha!

狙いは iTV

Johansen は自分がやっていることが違法だとは考えていないようだ。DRM をはずすのではなく、DRM を付け加えるのだから。Johansen と Farantzos の二人は、アップルの iTV がもたらす未来に有頂天になっていた。iPod から閉め出された連中のことを考えると、もし iTV が出たら多くの会社が set-top box に映画をダウンロードするのに一本いくらと支払うようになるのを希望しているようだった。アップルからきっぱりとはねつけられるだろうか。［そう思うひとは］直ちに前に出なさい。

Johansen doesn’t think what he’s doing is illegal; he’s adding DRM rather than breaking it. He and Farantzos were giddy about the prospect of Apple’s iTV, hoping companies will pay up to get movies on the set-top box when it comes out, after seeing the ill effects of being shut off the iPod. Spurned by Apple? Step right up.

訴訟に発展するか

これまで DRM を設定しようとする側と解除しようとする側の間で絶え間なく行われてきた争い（ちょうど先週もマイクロソフトの PlaysForSure DRM を取り除くアプリを出したハッカーに対してマイクロソフトが訴訟を起こしたばかりだ）とは、今回はちょっと趣を異にする。もしうまくいけば、自らのハードウェアをコントロールしているアップルの役割を DoubleTwist は排除することになる。でもそのことによって、アップルのハードの売り上げを増やす結果になるかもしれない。アップルは自らのデバイスについてたっぷり利ざやを稼げるかもしれないから、ここのところは見て見ぬ振りをするテかもしれない。

This is a different twist on the constant battle between DRM crackers and builders (see, just last week, Microsoft’s lawsuit against a hacker for releasing an app that strips off its PlaysForSure DRM). If successful, DoubleTwist will eliminate Apple as a middleman to its own hardware. But in doing so, it just might help Apple sell more of that hardware. Apple enjoys fat margins on its devices, and perhaps should turn a blind eye, for now.
