Amazon statistics are funny.

I was looking at the box set of M*A*S*H.  All eleven seasons in one box and it’s on sale and it has the movie and I maybe have to buy it.

Amazon helpfully tells me what people buy after viewing the M*A*S*H set.  89% of people buy M*A*S*H.  Seems reasonable.  I assume that the statistic is “of the people who view this dvd description and buy something, 89% buy this one”.

Second most popular purchase after viewing the M*A*S*H description?

Planet Earth:  The Complete Series.

Obviously “buy for me” often wins out over “buy for the children”.  Ha.

I decided that since I haven’t posted in a LONG time, I might as well post now. A while ago I came back from a very fun sleepover at a friend’s b’day party and we watched 3 movies in total: Mean Girls, Step Up 2, and The Devil Wears Prada. I decided to do The Devil Wears Prada because it was pretty much my favourite out of all 3.

Ok, so let’s start with the plot. The plot was actually really interesting and funny because you’d always get twists and turns whenever you think the main character, Andrea, has finally calmed down. The characters were very strongly portrayed, especially Emily, who was played by Emily Blunt, ironically. I think she did a really good job at getting Emily’s uptight, arrogant yet cool personality through and the British accent made her all the better to watch. As for Marilyn Priestly, Meryl Streep did a really good job as well of getting that bossy, strict and commanding attitude through.
All of this aside, i think the fashion in there was fantastic, and I couldn’t help saying: “ooh, I like that outfit!” at times. If they had a more detailed makeover scence in there, it’s be really interesting.

Overall, 4/5. ^^

Megan Fox played a good psycho covered in blood. Following the fire at the club. A series of murders begin. Only Needy suspects something wrong. This is where I think the story is pretty weak. In general the story needed some more work. I don’t get any development of the characters. I think maybe too much relying on the looks of Megan Fox. There is the attempt with the girls being friends since small children. The high school love is cute, terrible for parents every where a potential night mare. It just hit me this movie is for a young crowd. I don’t know something was missing. Both Fox and Seyfried are cute but thats not enough I’m afraid. I thought from the previews this was a vampire movie. A demon hottie is good I can roll wit it! I liked how Jennifer lured her victims. Not just plain sex appeal. She knew the young men and she used that to appeal to them. A false sense that she really liked them. Suckers your just the main course tonight! I’m thinking maybe go PG and perhaps some comedy. Make killing funny, you know high school funny. I know that was totally cheesy but I couldn’t help it. The end was funny goodie two shoes Needy bust out as maybe some kind of a demon hunter. Sequel! It’s sad but I like even bad horror flicks, I just do. Not that this movie was the worst.

We watch Lily’s nativity on DVD (£7.50 a pop…a bargain?) To be honest, the cameraman did a professional job, in fact, it starts like a Sergio Leone movie. The nativity play itself is actually a recording of the rehersal, rather than the performance that parents were privvy to. As the biblical story unfolds, I cannot help but notice the almost pagan overtones and before the Messiah’s umbilical cord as even been cut, I worry that Joseph is going to be dragged off by the three kings to be sacrificed in a giant wickerman out in the playground. Anyway, Lily’s performance is outstanding, even though it cost us around one pound per second. Still, I can make that back by charging a tenner for the grandparents’ copies.

Today is Christmas! I havent written anything again for a week or two, I have been busy with all kinds of things. Where did I leave off last time…

On the 17th myself and Ryan attended his Christmas work party, and it was pretty funny. Ryan’s boss Robb is so funny, and great company, and Drew also sat with us and we all seemed to have fun. It started snowing rapidly that night so we left early, and headed to the pub in which I now work. On the walk home Ryan fell over three times on the snow, and myself, Drew and Ryan ended up running around a perfect snow covered carpark, with the boys making yellow snow circles. That night I took some photos as the snow was still falling:

On the 20th my parents, my sister and her boyfriend came over for Christmas, as they are now skiing in France for a week. We had a great time and lovely food Sarah and Cory went in the snow which was still covering our back garden, they made a snow cat and a snow turtle:

I started a new job working at The Man of Kent pub in Rochester, and it is possibly the best pub to drink ever; so warm and friendly, with some great ales etc. I had such a good time on my first shift, and it already seems so much better than my last bar work.

So, now it is today… ITS CHRISTMAS! I got the table and chairs that I wanted from my parents, the new Harry Potter dvd, some money, kitchen things, a crochet book and other things too Ryan got me two necklaces that I blogged about before; the mustache and the robot from my previous post!!! The robot says ‘Lil Juice Box’ I also got the apple notepad which I wrote about here, and a coaster set that stacks into an apple! AMAZING! He has also bought me the Metallica Guitar Hero set, but it isnt here yet… I am rather excited.

This post has taken me forever. I have Justin sitting next to me, mocking me at how many hours it has taken. That has only been because I had to edit and resize all the photos, and they took a while, especially the panorama to render. Ah well… watching Hook at the same time so its all good. Christmas has been good, just myself, Ryan, and Justin… I made a roast dinner and the boys devoured it in minutes, which can only be a compliment. Now to drink…

Hilarious and totally unauthorized pirated DVD version of my film, The Local.

The ease with which intellectual property is stolen and distributed wasn’t something I gave much thought to before I had anything to sell the world. With the recent release of The Local, now I think about piracy all the time. I can find my work–as well as the work of many colleagues–pirated and made available all over the internet. One site even offers my film with Arabic subtitles–something our foreign distributor will probably charge us a lot of money for.

The most typical form of piracy for movies is the good old “DVD rip”. The pirate gets the DVD, recompresses it, and chops it up into little pieces (to be reassembled later) so it can be easily distributed over the internet. The movie parts are seeded in torrents and then shipped all over the web via file-sharing networks, getting gobbled up by movie hungry spend-thrifts everywhere, bringing joy to many, and costing the makers of “Transporter 2″ millions of rubles, yen, etc., in imagined DVD revenue.

The image in this post is from a website offering bulk purchases of a pirated DVD version of my film, The Local. It’s rare that such a small release as mine would garner hard-copy piracy, so its with pride I present to you a new, improved back cover of the DVD, featuring an image of me with a burger stuffed in my face.

I was also pleased to see that the MPAA saw fit to go easy on us with a PG-13 rating, despite the film’s pervasive blue language, graphic violence and nudity. Even in the on the high seas of online piracy, its all about butts in seats!

I would love to own this pirated version of my film, but sadly, the geniuses at BLUCABIN are “out of stack”. Their unusual choice of syntax leads me to believe there would have been additional customs charges involved anyway.

Sorry guys, you’ll have to buy 200 copies of Crank 2 instead! Now rated PG-13!

I was curious about this movie and realized it didn’t do great in the box office, but respect the three stars (Robert Redford, who directed as well, Meryl Streep, and Tom Cruise) so I finally watched it. Lions for Lambs is all about taking a stand. Political ideologies aside (which I will not discuss here), this movie does compel you to at least think about what you’re being fed through media, the education system, and government. There’s some strong acting, but know that this movie isn’t a typical all-action or all-intellectual type of movie. It does however blend both in such a way that does make you think about the reality of politics and media.

Hit it; the call to action is yours to decide.

Happy holidays, everybody! We hope the coming year brings you all the wealth and happiness you want. 2009 was a rough year in a lot of ways, so here’s hoping better times are just around the corner. 

SBR is taking next week off, but we’ll return January 4 with our featured profile of – what else – 2010, the sequel to one of the most admired science fictions of all time and an underrated work in its right. Looking back at it now seems appropriate, we think. 

Before we shove off, in keeping with your year-old tradition, here are our holiday-themed rants. They’re just our opinions, but we mean them. 

1. There’s something to please everybody at the theatre right now, even if some of the stuff available seems like it’s been done a thousand years before – we’re looking at you, It’s Complicated. There’s nothing wrong with giving people a little holiday fluff with which to spend Christmas night, but it wouldn’t kill the industry to shake things up a bit, either. A naked Alec Baldwin doesn’t qualify as “fresh.” 

That must be Italian?

2. Last Christmas we wished for better movies in 2009. We also wished for world peace, and we didn’t get that either. Still, there was reason to celebrate thanks to Up In The Air, Moon, and a few others. Mostly, though, we think the year was by and large fallow for filmgoers, with too much formulaic and disingenuous junk like Year One and Couples Retreat clogging multiplexes while glitzy, faux-highbrow offerings like Nine seemed particularly transparent in their complacent excess. 

3. We said this last year, and we meant it. We mean it this year, too: behave yourself when you go to the movie theatre. Leave the cell phone in the car, don’t talk after the trailers, and show the theatre staff some courtesy. The holidays are a time you spend with family, but don’t act like you’re at home when you’re in the theatre. It’s rude, and it’s stupid, and it’s particularly crass at Christmastime. 

As good a place to start as any

4. Finally, we want to close out the year encouraging everybody to make movies better. Here’s our suggestion: rent and Netflix more classic movies. You know what we mean by classic: these are maybe the ones you’ve heard about your whole life but haven’t ever seen. Or they’re films you think you should watch but haven’t. As a new year’s resolution, commit yourself to seeing one classic film a month. Turner Classic Movies has one on almost all the time, and plenty of other movie channels – Flix, Fox Movie Classics, et cetera – regularly show films that are due and overdue for rediscovery. If you’re not sure where to start, The American Film Institute’s Top 100 films makes a great checklist. 

If enough people start watching films worth their time, if as a whole we all get smarter about cinema’s history, eventually the movie industry will have to make better films to keep up with us. Film as a whole can be so much better than it is right now, but only if we insist upon it. Thanks and again our best wishes in the new year.

District 9 was just released on DVD this week and is a thrilling, enthralling movie that just keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire movie. Peter Jackson produced this movie, and you can tell that he really enjoys stretching your imagination in this sci-fi thriller. It’s shot documentary style, and I really enjoyed the acting of Sharlto Copley. The graphics were amazing, the storyline was suspenseful and original (albeit references to Apartheid might be controversial), and I highly recommend this film especially on Blu-ray.

Hit it, and prepare for exploding bodies.

Note: No, I haven’t forgotten you! I apologize, once again, for the lack of updates in the past few weeks. I will have a lot of time immediately following Christmas, however, so expect several reviews every day until the New Year.

Still Walking (2008)

Why?: Considered a successor to the great Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, Kore-eda has established himself as one of the great auteurs working today. “Still Walking” is a remarkable, low-key family drama. Not much happens on the surface level, but so much is revealed about the family through expertly crafted dialogue. It’s a film that demands a patient viewer, although anyone who sticks through to the end is sure to find a little bit of themselves on screen. This is a film that’ll stick with you.

Why?: Well, it’s not exactly a Christmas movie, although Christmas ITALICdoes happen in it.

I caught this one when TCM aired it a few weeks back. It’s pretty remarkable. On the surface, it may seem like a simple-minded light comedy – but notice the hints that question Dick Powell’s character’s sexuality. The film, to me, is about a gay man becoming straight. Now, what I make of it’s perspective on the matter (is it a tragedy, or disgustingly homophobic?), I haven’t quite decided.

I’d love to hear someone else’s viewpoint – the evidence that Dick Powell is a homosexual are in a great abundance, and only with that analysis can you make sense of the bizarre dream sequence that happens late in the film. Or, if you don’t buy that he is completely homosexual, is he simply in love with this one specific man (a sailor friend, who clearly has no interest in women throughout)?

With that tangent out of the way, it’s important to note that “Susan Slept Here” is currently not available on DVD. This may very well be your last chance to see it until TCM airs it again.
