Sometimes life is just plain odd… but this little oddity made me laugh.

Ben is a little terrified, as I am sure we all have been at some point, of the strange associations that the Amazon “other people who purchased this also bought…” tool recommends. Whereas we are all familiar with the strange things this tool throws up, such as people who buy books about fluffy bunnies also enjoy reading books about a boating in the south of France (I made that one up…), the suggestion today was a little odder.

As Ben happily browsed Amazon’s well-stocked shelves, he was informed that other people looking at the same item had also had a tendency towards buying the rather ominously named ”Flexi Crevice Tool”. Good god, he though, what could this terrifying item be? A strange and intimate sex toy? Perhaps a flexible tool for performing an enema? I must be honest, us dirty minded souls went through a whole host of possibilities.

Until, that is, we looked at the product. A useful little attachment for a Dyson. Now – who woulda thought?!

PDM10 is set to provide even greater business opportunities for exhibitors, particularly those looking to secure contracts with OEMs. Plastics manufacturers are now citing poor quality, long shipping times and the cost of tool modification as reasons for dropping overseas contracts in favour of UK tooling suppliers.

GTMA chief executive Julia Moore confirmed the resurgent demand from UK suppliers, “OEMs find UK sourcing more flexible, timely and cost effective solution. The GTMA will use PDM10 to highlight the quality of our own supply organisations and demonstrate to OEMs why sourcing tools from the UK market remains the best option.”

Having recently established a Manufacturing Resource Centre to provide OEMs with an easier and faster route to suppliers, the GTMA is currently working on a number of initiatives for PDM10, which will maximise networking opportunities for both visitors and its members alike.

“The sterling exchange rate is a further factor in favour of UK sourcing,” said Steve Crowhurst, event director. “Injection moulders at PDM09 reported a growing interest by OEMs and I can only see this growing at PDM 10. Now is an excellent time for UK companies to benefit from this resurgent demand.”

In 2009 PDM played host to such prominent OEM visitor names as Aston Martin Lagonda, BMW UK Manufacturing, Bosch, Braitrim, Dyson, Epson, Gillette UK, Honda, Hozelock, JCB, Linpac Allibert, P&G, Pfizer, Philips Avent, Reckitt Benckiser, Tyco Electronics and Unilever.

My husband and I bought this vacuum cleaner last year after yet another vacuum cleaner lost its suction. It picks up everything, including a tremendous amount of cat hair from our carpets. We’ve never had a vacuum cleaner that worked so well. We used to replace our vacuum cleaners once a year but the Dyson is still running as well as when we bought it, and of course, it has a 5 year warranty, which we haven’t had to use yet.

It is also easy to clean, although I’m not entirely clear on how to clean the dirt out of the cyclone and wish that more detailed instructions had been included on this point.Best Buy Dyson DC14 Vacuum Best Price, Buy Now! [Click Here!]

Sir James Dyson (born Cromer, Norfolk, England, 2 May 1947), is an English industrial designer. Dyso

Sir James Dyson (born Cromer, Norfolk, England, 2 May 1947),
is an English industrial designer. Dyson was educated at Gresham’s School, Holt, Norfolk, from 1956 to 1965.He spent one year (1965–1966) at the Byam Shaw School of Art (now the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design), and then studied furniture and interior design at the Royal
College of Art (1966–1970) before moving into engineering.
Dyson’s first product, was launched in 1970 while he was at the Royal College of Art.His next product, the Ballbarrow, was a modified version of a wheelbarrow using a ball to replace the wheel. Dyson remained with the idea of a ball which his brother thought of, inventing the Trolleyball, a trolley that launched boats. He then designed the Wheelboat which could travel at speeds of 64 km/h on both land and water.
Vacuum cleaners
In the late 1970s Dyson had the idea of using cyclonic separation to create a
vacuum cleaner that would not lose suction as it picked up dirt. He became frustrated with his Hoover Junior’s diminishing performance: dust kept clogging the bag and so it lost suction. The idea of the cyclones came from the spray-finishing room’s air filter in his Ballbarrow factory. While partly supported by his art teacher wife’s salary, and after five years and many prototypes, Dyson launched the ‘G-Force’ cleaner in 1983.
However, no manufacturer or distributor would launch his product in the UK as it would disturb the valuable cleaner-bag market, so Dyson launched it in Japan through cataloguesales.[2] Manufactured in bright pink, the G-Force had a selling price of ?2,000 (British equivalent). It won the 1991 International Design Fair prize in Japan. He obtained his first U.S. patent on the idea in 1986 (U.S. Patent 4,593,429).
After failing to sell his invention to the major manufacturers, Dyson set up his own manufacturing company. In June 1993 he opened his research centre and factory in Malmesbury,Wiltshire. The product now outsells those of some of the companies that rejected his idea and has become one of the most popular brands in the United Kingdom. In early 2005 it
was reported that Dyson cleaners had become the market leaders in the United States by value (though not by number of units sold). Note that the US was introduced to Dyson when root cyclone was implemented, so in the US there were no sales of the DC01 – DC05 Dual Cyclone vacuum cleaners. The Dyson Dual Cyclone became the fastest selling vacuum
cleaner ever to be made in the UK.
Dyson engineers were determined to create vacuum cleaners with even higher suction. This was achieved by adding a smaller diameter cyclone to give greater centrifugal force. This led to a way of getting 45% more suction than a dual cyclone and removing more dust, by dividing the air into 8 smaller cyclones, hence the name root cyclone. Dyson’s breakthrough
in the UK market, more than 10 years after the initial idea, was through a TV advertising campaign that emphasized that, unlike its rivals, it did not require the continuing purchase of replacement bags. At that time, the UK market for disposable cleaner bags was ?100 million. The slogan of ’say goodbye to the bag’ proved more attractive to the buying public than a previous emphasis on the suction efficiency that its technology
delivers. Ironically, the previous step change in domestic vacuum cleaner design had been the introduction of the disposable bag – users being prepared to pay extra for the convenience of dustless emptying.
Following his success the other major manufacturers began to market their own bagless vacuum cleaners. Dyson sued Hoover UK for patent infringement and won around $5 million in damages. His manufacturing plant moved from England to Malaysia, for economic reasons
and because of difficulty acquiring land for expansion, leaving 800 workers redundant.
The company’s headquarters and research facilities remain in Malmesbury. Dyson later stated that because of the cost savings from transferring production to Malaysia he was able to invest in R&D at Malmesbury. Dyson employs more people in the UK than he did before the transfer of manufacturing to Malaysia.
In 2005, Dyson added the wheel ball from his Ballbarrow concept into a vacuum cleaner,
creating the Dyson Ball, claiming it to be more manoeuvrable.

But today that all changed when I accompanied my mom to our local Sears to get her glasses fixed. On

But today that all changed when I accompanied my mom to our local Sears to get her glasses fixed. On our way out we caught sight of dysons product line and decided to take a look. Now, I had been reading alot of info online from my fellow consumers and the consensus has always been positive. But alas the cynical side of me (which is a BIG side) thought a vacuum is a vacuum is a vacuum. The sales lady was very sweet and showed us the different products. At first my mom almost gave in and got the “animal” however after reading more details online ( Thanks to all you “amazonians” ) I knew it was no difference in the animal and the DC 14 other than the higher price for the ‘animal’. You get a different accessory (still available seperately) and a bag of dysons cleaning powder. We decided on the DC 14 and we rushed home where I immediately set upon the box like a hobo on a hotpocket. Tearing the box open and assembling it ….I noticed assembly is a snap. Just follow along with the “beginners” guide for initial set up. After that I plugged it in and started vacuuming away. At first I noticed ease of use. The materials used in the dyson really make it light and manuverable. The sound is nice and quiet and outside of the usual “whooshing” sound there’s a low pronounced humming sound. I thought I had did something wrong however it’s normal ( I finally actually READ the instructions ) and all a part of the magic. Now…to the performance. Like the title of my review I was rendered speechless and this is something of a major feat when it comes to any household product. I looked at the side canister and noticed a fog like buildup within the canister. It was dust. ALOT of dust to be honest. And hair. And other little pieces of “stuff” that this contraption was pulling from the carpet. I vacuum many times and consider myself to be borderline psychotic when it comes to cleanliness. I figured my regular vacuum was doing the job. After all, I just vacuumed last night (July 25th) in the TV room. But just a half hour ago the dyson was picking up stuff so fast and so quickly that the canister has gone ABOVE it’s max line. Now I have to clean out the canister and I can’t wait because I don’t have to worry about going and buying a replacement bag. The overall design is smart and almost sexy. The accessories that come with it all attach to the vacuum itself leaving out the trouble of looking for them. The cord is long and easy to tie up when you are finished. Storage is easy as well. My conclusion is that this is the last vacuum that you need to buy. There simply is nothing better on the market. Shame on that vacuum company ( it’s name rhymes with coover ) who’s president stated that they should have took dyson seriously and bought the design only to shelve it away from the general public. In other words, their $500 million dollars a year earnings from propietery replacement bags could be saved by never telling the public about such an invention and keeping us in the dark. And now dyson has the last laugh as well as my respect and gratitute. And you will too once you buy one for yourself. A wise investment. A+ and SIX stars!

Sir Richard Needham, international and commercial director at Dyson, is to be keynote speaker at PDM10’s Moulding Business Debate.

Taking place at the Telford International Centre from 18 to 20 May 2010, the PDM10 Conference will address all the hottest topics facing the UK plastics industry today from product design and manufacturing innovation to wider business issues. Sir Richard’s keynote will address how to compete effectively in a global market, drawing on his extensive experience at Dyson, where he headed up the company’s move to manufacture in China.

Sir Richard Needham, international and commercial director at Dyson

“New Knowledge, New Business is the underlying theme of the PDM10 event and we are strengthening the conference programme this year as part of a package of measures that will ensure our exhibitors and visitors can fully realise this theme,” said Steve Crowhurst, event director. “Sir Richard’s in‑depth knowledge of some of the biggest issues facing the UK plastics design and moulding industry today means he is uniquely well placed to deliver the keynote to our Moulding Business Debate.”

Sir Richard Needham is responsible for developing Dyson’s manufacturing and sales operations in Europe, the US and the Far East. Formerly a Conservative MP, he served as Michael Heseltine’s deputy at the DTI, where he was credited with reinvigorating export strategy. Aside from his role at Dyson he also chairs Avon Rubber and serves as vice chairman of NEC Europe.

An innovation for PDM10 will see the conference arena located for the first time within the exhibition hall for easier access and interchange between conference and exhibition.

After reading the Sunday papers yesterday, I thought I’d critique a few press ads from the Sun

After reading the Sunday papers yesterday, I thought I’d critique a few press ads from the Sun-Herald Life Magazine (published 8 Nov 2009). An interesting mix of fun, wrong and the downright odd!

The “Lets Make Our Brand Cool To Appeal To Young People” Approach

Advertiser: Blackberry
Headline: Love Hanging Out

So Blackberry wants to broaden it’s target audience from the boardroom to the classroom. It’s a worthy strategy to increase sales and market share; however I can’t help thinking if your dad or mum has a Blackberry for work purposes, why would a teenager or twenty-something want one too! The accepted wisdom is that young people choose their labels/brands/causes/etc. so they can be different from their parents (I know I did). In my view Blackbery would have more success launching a spin-off phone (like ‘Blueberry’ or some other cool name) to appeal to younger audiences. The creative is pretty ordinary too, and why are they even advertising in a newspaper as it’s well documented most people under 35 yrs don’t read papers? Everything about this campaign seems wrong.

The “Quirky Picture Attracts Attention” Approach

Advertiser: Oxfam
Headline: Doing good never goes out of fashion.

A goat with an afro, sunnies and bling around it’s neck – what a great visual to stop you flicking over the page! Coupled with a smart headline that doesn’t play the ‘guilt trip’ on the reader as some charity/cause ads are prone to do. I particularly liked the call to action with its line “be a clever kid” (geddit?) and the SMS word being “Goat”. Hope they got heaps of responses.

The “Reinforce the TVC” Print Approach

Advertiser: Yellow Pages
Headline: Some things need fixing faster.

Yellow Pages has a long history of creating integrated advertising, and this latest campaign is another good example of this approach. The TVC shows the owner of this garden statue dealing with a plumbing problem by using his Yellow Pages. The message is repeated in this print ad, that works even if you haven’t seen the TVC. Kudos also for showing a laptop and mobile phone that signals these are methods to access the YP database.

P.S. The TVC closing scene is pure fun, when you realise the cause of the neighbour’s broken window!

The “Let’s Be Relevant to Students Doing Exams” Approach

Advertiser: Kellogg’s Sultana Bran
Headline: Sultana Brain

This product has been on our grocery shelves for eons (well as long as I can remember anyway). It’s well known health benefits, especially as a source of fibre, over- shadowed the fact it doesn’t taste as good as it’s sugar-laden competitors. Now the manufacturer claims it is an excellent breakfast for students wanting to be at their peak for exams. An ideal message for the end of year exam period, particularly the HSC. Although the pack shot visual is uninspiring, it works with the clever headline that converts “Bran” into “Brain” that says SB does much more than keep you regular. This ad would appeal to parents who want to give their child every chance to do well in exams.

The “Be Different For The Sake Of It” Approach

Advertiser: Dyson
Headline: N/A

The layout is different as there is no headline. Instead the copy is the headline – prominently placed inside the product and goes on and on about the problem of fans with blades and why the Dyson “no-fan fan” is better. Seems to me they missed a great opportunity for a product demonstration as it’s a unique design and seems quite revolutionary. Took me a while to understand what they were banging on about. The copy is too wordy; it should have simply said “Look no blades – for quieter, more efficient airflow”.

Err… last month was the first time since the crazy days of November 06 that a month has passed without a post… so now I’m going to do a little overcompensating…

So the DROID is here… is it the one we are looking for?

Highly renowned US Agency Cliff Freeman closed it’s doors. The agency was famous for producing TVCs that were actually funny (well for advertising at least). I heard a rumour somewhere that when presenting work to one of the Creative Directors, you would know if he liked it not by getting a laugh out of him… but by him just saying in a monotone voice “Laugh”…

Here’s one of the “classics” they produced for outpost.com during the day…

Burger King / CP+B does AR… of course they do… they always do the thing… while the rest of us just talk about the “thing”

This is a bit of all right… Kasabian Football Hero… Underdog is a pretty good song to boot! (accidental)

Pretty Stupid stuff…
Now this is pretty much the opposite…

shockingbarack.com

So basic idea is… one guy from the company (Brammo) and one guy from the agency (CP+B) ride the new electric motorbikes (the Enertia) they are both trying raise awareness (sell) for… all the way from Detroit (Motor City) to Washington (D.C.) They will (have) couch surf, tweet, glide silently and stop to plug these pretty machines in every now and then all the way in hope of not just raising awareness but also raising the attention of the Barack Obama whom the goal is to give the bike to… now because it’s taken me so long to write this they’ve already made the trip… (listen to the story here: http://www.justin.tv/fearlessqa) and whilst they may not have succeeded… they did get meet with the US Secretary of Energy and get their message across. Not bad.

The route was chosen as it was the journey the big boys from the car companies took with their hats in their hands to ask for bailout money from the prez.

These are the keys to the bike and the bike lock they have left somewhere if Washington for the Prez tho pick up when he has a spare 5mins.

Great idea.

Another?

How about The Editors hacking/mashing streetview in a promo for their latest album…

Ordinary vacuum cleaners have bags and filters that clog and restrict airflow. Dyson machines all include Cyclone technology, which uses centrifugal forces to spin dust and dirt out of the air and straight into the bin. No bags. No loss of suction. This cyclone technology is and was widely used to refresh the air in (pig)stables. So the genius of Dyson was not to invent something new but implement a solution from another industry (farming and agriculture) in another one (consumer goods).

Some other fun things you can get here are below:

Hide all your cables in lovely grass and charge all your electronics in style!

And here’s a cool new invention made by Dyson (the vacuum people) – not sure where this will be available for purchase but it sure does look awesome. I knew those Dyson people were onto something when they came out with that cool-looking ball vacuum. NO, not a vacuum for men, I mean this one:

Wow, that’s all I thought when i first seen this bladeless fan from Dyson. Now this is a sexy looking fan, i never imagined myself saying that. But what dyson has come up with is the coolest fan in the world. If it wasn’t $400 AUD I would go right ahead and order one.

I think this would be a great accessory for any nerd office/gaming /media space, especially in our hot aussie summers ! Read on to see how the technology works.
