I have been doing a lot of study about how best to use Adobe InDesign to create ePub books with the least fuss and the best results.

Here are two great resources that start with the basics and work forward from there. If you work with InDesign and want to create ePub versions of the books you design (or have clients who will want to do so), I urge you to spend some time with these great tutorials.

FIRST…

In the October/November issue of InDesign Magazine, Gabriel Powell has a two-part series of articles — “The eBook Revolution Is Here!” (how to create ePub files using InDesign) and “Editing E-Books.” (If you work with InDesign and don’t subscribe…why not? I consistently learn new and better techniques and great design ideas in every issue.)

SECOND…

Gabriel Powell has posted two outstanding video tutorials on the same subject on his InstantInDesign website. They are Episode 10 (Creating an eBook with InDesign Part 1) and Episode 11 (Part 2).

After reading and watching Gabriel’s material, you’ll be well on your way to designing books smarter…so they can be converted easily to ePub.

The irresistible heroine of Confessions of a Shopaholic and Shopaholic Takes Manhattan is back!-in a hilarious tale of mothers and daughters, mothers and sons, and one blushing bride who just can’t say no to saying “I do.”

Life has been good for Becky Bloomwood: She’s become the best personal shopper at Barneys, she and her successful entrepreneurial boyfriend, Luke, are living happily in Manhattan’s West Village, and her new next door neighbor is a fashion designer! But with her best friend, Suze, engaged, how can Becky fail to notice that her own ring finger is bare? Not that she’s been thinking of marriage (or diamonds) or anything…

Then Luke proposes! Bridal registries dance in Becky’s head. Problem is, two other people are planning her wedding: Becky’s overjoyed mother has been waiting forever to host a backyard wedding, with the bride resplendent in Mum’s frilly old gown. While Luke’s high-society mother is insisting on a glamorous, all-expenses-paid affair at the Plaza. Both weddings for the same day. And Becky can’t seem to turn down either one. Can everyone’s favorite shopaholic tie the knot before everything unravels?

The rise of the Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, and the iPhone have fueled a revolution in publishing. Mo

The rise of the Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, and the iPhone have fueled a revolution in publishing. More and more readers want to download their books in electronic formats. This brings up several issues for writers. First is the fear that ebooks will replace print books, and brick-and-mortar stores will become a thing of the past. How many people buy music CDs these days? Even libraries are involved in digital lending. About 5400 public libraries today offer e-books and digitally downloaded audio books. NetLibrary, a provider of e-books to libraries, has seen circulation rise 21% this year. I’m not saying books will disappear altogether; they’ll just change format. This affects income for writers since ebooks may sell at a lower price point than print editions. It involves issues of piracy as well as reversion of rights clauses.

E-rights are very important in publishing contracts these days, even for traditionally published authors. Many regular publishers are jumping on the bandwagon and putting out electronic versions of their print published works. Then there are ebook only publishers. Harlequin started Carina Press, a purely e-book venture. Those of us in the writing community have known about Samhain, The Wild Rose Press, Loose ID, and many other ebook pubs, for several years. But herein lies another problem: publisher recognition.

According to the standards of professional writing organizations, some of these publishers do not meet their criteria and are therefore not approved, meaning their authors are not eligible for published author status. This has been a growing point of contention among authors and a thorny issue. The well known ebook pubs have a selective policy and editors scour through manuscripts just like a traditional pub. Editing services are included so an author goes through a similar process as for a print pub. But certain qualifications demanded by professional organizations render these authors little better than self-pubs in status. For example, one writing org requires for recognition that a publisher pays an advance of at least $1000. This lets out many of the ebook pubs who offer no advance, just a royalty rate. Others may offer a small token advance . Some e-book publishers will offer the book as a POD (print-on-demand) as well, either simultaneously with electronic publication or later after certain sales quotas are met. But the profession organizations also demand that an approved publisher must have a print run and distribution of 1000 copies or more of each title they produce. This model doesn’t work for POD presses. How this will play out in the industry remains to be seen. Eventually, the professional writing organizations may have to rethink their definitions of acceptable publishers in lieu of the e-book explosion.

Royalty rates are another problem. For books that don’t have to be printed and stockpiled in warehouses, authors should be able to earn a higher royalty rate. For this reason, authors should carefully compare ebook publishing houses and e-rights clauses to know their options.

Some of these books may appear on bookstore shelves, but for the most part, readers have to order them online. Writers have to step up their Internet promotion and learn how to deal with booksellers who won’t work with ebooks or POD. But one thing is sure: writers who want to get their work in front of as many readers as possible will want their novel available in as a downloadable ebook.

We were working on this project for NCT and researching for this is really tough. So the the questio

We were working on this project for NCT and researching for this is really tough. So the the question is will books become extinct eventually?

What is the definition of a BOOK: It is a set or collection of written, printed, illustrated, or blank sheets, made of paper, parchment or other material, usually fastened together to hinge at one side. ( Ripped from Wikipedia)

Personally I do feel that reading online is much easier. However it makes us lazy and miss out certain parts of the file. I have tried reading an E-book. They didn’t publish the whole book and honestly I couldn’t be bothered to purchase the book even though I was curious about the ending.

So will I move on to E-books? Not now! I love reading books and I purchase books once in awhile. I like to keep them and nice covers play a part! I am a sort of reader who reads a book that I like over and over again. Reading is addictive! Whenever I start on a book I will bring it wherever I go. So I think I won’t move on to E-books in the near future.

HOWEVER

If I were given an E-book reader, I might move on to the E-books as it replaced the down side of a book which is the weight. Like me, I like to read on trains and buses but I really dislike the heavy bags that I have to carry with me. On top of that, it is not that nice to have bulky handbags. I will be realistic, although I will have to forgo the Nice book covers, e-book reader saves space and it is way lighter! On the other hand, I will be really mad if my e-book reader runs out of battery while I am reading. So I suggest, the e-book readers must have at least a couple of batteries to be used interchangeably.

It will be a relief for parents and school children to not bring those heavy textbooks and bags to school. Highlighters will also be useless then. I think that e-textbooks will not available yet as it is always better to have a hard copy, in case the file is infected? Just like till date. We still have hard copies for contracts. I don’t think that will change. That is because anything electronic or online seems a little unreliable. It may be easily altered and of course tracked.

There is one reason why Books will not extinct. On the other hand, it will be integrated with the virtual platform to have more innovative and interesting ways of delivering information. I think this is where the Augmented Reality Books comes handy! Where 3D images will enhance the reading experience and interactivity. Who knows! There might be holograms in books next time! Snow White and Prince Comes alive! I like how it feels! Its like watching a 3D movie! It is one way to attract people back to the cinemas rather than cooping at home and watching those illegal downloads. Books will have its comeback too! I believe!

The future for books might be bleak . However these are just speculations. These are questions that even GOOGLE can’t answer. Nothing is definite but somehow I am confident that it won’t happen!

I saw this tidbit via Shelf Awareness, which cited Crain’s New York and iReaderReview.com as the sources:

…at Random House, “September 2009 sales (of Kindle e-books) were $22.6 million–a huge increase from a year ago when they were just $2.9 million. The Lost Symbol was a huge part with 100,000 e-book sales in its first week out (5% of total sales). In first half of 2009, Random House Kindle e-book revenue grew 400% from a year ago.”

Usually the e-book numbers are shown only as a percentage, which can be misleading when talking about actual money spent/made. But 2.9 vs. 22.6 million is a big, well-measured jump.

My favorite conclusion from iReaderReview and Shelf Awareness:

The impact of holiday e-book sales offers a “huge opportunity for new companies to become successful publishers.”

I wonder if these new publishing companies will look anything like the ones we see today.

After writing those two reviews of Twilight, I’m feeling pretty drained. But seriously, folks, today

After writing those two reviews of Twilight, I’m feeling pretty drained. But seriously, folks, today a word from the publishing industry:

Last Monday I attended “Words Worth Paying For? Publishing in the Age of Electronic Readers,” a panel discussion about the future of publishing. On the panel were Katherine Dunn, local novelist; Vailey Oehlke, director of libraries for Multnomah County; and Dennis Stovall, coordinator of curriculum for the publishing program at Portland State University and publisher of Ooligan Press. The panel was moderated by Al Stavitsky, director of the George S. Turnbull Portland Center at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. Altogether, that is four great people and a lot of job titles.

Barry Johnson wrote about the evening for the Oregonian; you can read his article here. The discussion focused on electronic reading and its effect on our world. Electronic reading devices such as the Kindle (from Amazon) and the Nook (from Barnes & Noble), as well as reading on computer and cell phone screens, are on the rise. How will they change the way in which we read? Katherine Dunn made some insightful remarks about the incorporation of audio and video into e-books: vooks, as they are sometimes called, may even be able to squirt out some kind of scent to go along with the story. This is all very novel, and I wonder how this kind of interaction will affect both reader and writer.

When e-books come up, there is always a commotion about their replacing traditional books. Generally, the panel and audience felt that physical books would still be read for quite some time. The overall feeling was, too, that both physical and electronic books have merit and that technology is offering us enormous potential for both efficiency and creativity. Katherine Dunn expressed concern over the continued digitization of entire libraries: electronic archives can be damaged or lost. I appreciated her points about keeping “hard copies” of original material—not only to maintain the integrity of our history but also to preserve a physical history of the art of bookmaking. And I share her concern about the keepers of electronic history: will all this information be held in good hands? What are the consequences if some or all people are denied access?

Indeed, accessibility was a concern for the panel and audience alike. A lot of voices chimed in about the “haves and have-nots.” As we rely more on technology to do our reading, more information (aka more books) will be converted to and created for e-reading devices. Where does that leave people who do not have e-devices? We talked about this in the comfort of the largest city in Oregon. The discussion might have been more urgent and more intense elsewhere: as a friend pointed out, towns in rural Oregon represent some of the technological “have-nots.” She works for a library that still maintains collections of cassettes and VCR tapes because the community still uses these devices. This community has the sacred right to read. Will the rise of e-books deprive them of this right?

A conference room full of authors, readers, publishers, and librarians can talk for two hours about e-publishing and still have more to say. So there’s no way that I, with my limited knowledge and time, can do anything but skim the surface of a conversation that is ongoing and going on worldwide. As an editor, I frequently encounter e-publishing. Indeed, I have to stop writing now and get to work on some articles that will be published online. But I will share more thoughts about e-publishing whenever I am able to do so.

I know everyone’s saying it, but I want to say it with conviction: I can’t believe it is one month until Christmas. And it was a whole month ago that I was holidaying in Prague. (Cue forlorn and nostalgic sighs).
My Mum told me that once you’re past 21 the years go by faster. I haven’t told her, but for the last eight years I have been realising she’s quite right. There should be a book titled something like that “Things your parents were right about”. Or more correctly “Things your parents told you as a teenager that you thought would never happen and you should never admit that they did”. As well as years going by faster, they’d be other lines such as “one day you will listen to opera music”, “nose piercing really doesn’t suit you”, “you’ll look back and know we were right” and “one day you’ll care about your car being tidy”.
(Admittedly that last one is still a tad far off for me).
Speaking of things changing over time, I’ve just been reading up on Barnes & Noble new release the Nook. Apart from its cute name, it has some novel features such as being able to sample books and lend them out. Like a library between friends. More cuteness.
Am I warming to e-books? I seem to being dazzled by their glossy functions and promise of portability and eco-saving powers. Along with words link “E-Ink”. Yes, the incongruity of glossy consumerism and environmentalism seems to have me in a trance. Plus I like the idea of being at the forefront of a revolution in a (sometimes) stagnant industry. But I vow, (with more fervour than I vowed to my parents that I would never listen to opera music or take out my nose piercing at age 16) that I’ll be an infinite campaigner of the traditional book.
And with that promise, here’s the Media 7 coverage of our last book launch. Big thanks to Simon Pound for this.
