Domani sarà il primo giorno di Dicembre e le prime feste che incontriamo a Milano sono quelle di S. Ambrogio: festa grande in città con la consueta Fiera degli “Ohbej Ohbej”, un mercatino che inizialmente era fatto solo da artigiani e ora invece quasi esclusivamente da cinesi che di artigiano hanno ben poco. Gli artigiani si sono trasferiti in Fiera e hanno un gran successo, anche se così facendo la tradizione milanese va a ramengo.

Solitamente a Milano nella giornata dedicata al Santo Patrono, appunto S.Ambrogio, si addobbano le case per il Natale e si allestiscono i Presepi. Fa parte della tradizione e lo faremo anche noi.

Con il passare degli anni, le famiglie si ritrovano sempre più sole e sempre più piccole,  ricordo i Natali di quando ero bambina, si andava tutti dalla nonna e ci si incontrava con zii e cugini, c’era davvero il piacere di stare insieme. Poi sono arrivati i figli e le famiglie si sono un po’ ripiegate su se stesse, la festa si celebrava con genitori, figli e nipoti… spesso a casa mia. Ora i figli hanno famiglia e i nonni non ci sono più e allora se questo  Natale saremo in quattro sarà tanto: mio marito ed io, mia figlia che è ancora single, e Floretta.

Per combattere la tristezza abbiamo deciso di andarcene in montagna, pranzo in baita in una paesaggio incantato e calore umano a portata di mano. Anche questa è una bella possibilità, lo scorso anno non avevamo questa casa in montagna e ora invece sarà la nostra valvola di sicurezza. Bene, forse potrà essere un Natale sereno e perchè no? … anche bianco.

Amo molto questa festa americana, ogni anno penso che sarebbe molto bello se anche le famiglie italiane avessero un giorno dedicato a ringraziare il buon Dio per tutto quanto hanno avuto nel corso di un intero anno.

Di solito la mia famiglia trova un momento di unione per celebrare questa ricorrenza anche se negli ultimi anni abbiamo fatto tanti sforzi per trovare la quanto di buono ci poteva essere in tutto quanto  ci è accaduto.

Ayer se me antojó activar la e-card, una tarjeta prepago o de crédito que otorga el  Mercantil para comprar únicamente por Internet. Me senté frente a mi PC e ingresé a la página de la conocida entidad bancaria para realizar, paso a paso, el proceso de activación. Al intentar hacerlo virtualmente, me di cuenta que debía llamar a las líneas de atención al cliente del banco para poder tramitar la tarjeta, ya que la opción en la web estaba deshabilitada.

Tomé el teléfono y marqué. Después de soportar un par de irritables  “melodías telefónicas”, me atiende una operadora que hablaba como quien se acaba de despertar (no me extrañaría que estuviera durmiendo en plena jornada laboral). A continuación transcribo los detalles de la conversación.  

-Operadora: Buenas tardes, gracias por llamar al Mercantil. ¿En qué le puedo ayudar?

- Yo: Buenas tardes, estoy llamando porque quiero activar la e-card.

- Operadora: ¿La e-card?

- Yo: Sí, la e-card.

- Operadora: … (Minuto de silencio, supongo que bostezaba mientras activaba sus neuronas). ¿Tiene su computadora a la mano?

- Yo: Sí, acá la tengo.

- Operadora: Ingrese a la página del Mercantil.

-Yo: Ya lo hice.

-Operadora: Pulse donde dice Mercantil en línea.

-Yo: Ya lo hice.

-Operadora: Introduzca el número de su llave Mercantil y su clave.

-Yo: Ya lo hice (comenzando a obstinarme).

-Operadora: Ahora busque  “productos”  en el menú y haga clic en e-seguridad.

-Yo: Pero no quiero activar la e-seguridad, ya poseo esa tarjeta.

-Operadora: ¡Ahhhh! ¿No quiere la e-seguridad?

-Yo: No…

-Operadora: Disculpe, volvamos a hacer el procedimiento.

-Yo: Tranquila, ya sé cuál es el procedimiento. Lo que pasa es que cuando intento activar la e-card, aparece un aviso que me informa que debo llamar al número ahí indicado.

-Operadora: Bueno, entonces llame a ese número.

-Yo: A ese número estoy llamando (bruta)…

-Operadora: A ok, ya entiendo. Diríjase al menú de productos y seleccione e-card.

-Yo: ¡Listo!

-Operadora: Ahora actívela.

-Yo: No puedo, tengo rato diciéndote que no puedo.

-Operadora: ¡Qué raro! Espere un momento.

-Yo: …

-Operadora: ¿Está en la línea?

-Yo: Sí…

-Operadora: Disculpe, pero se me olvidó decirle que en estos momentos no estamos activando la e-card, hasta nuevo aviso.

-Yo: Mmmmm

-Operadora: Gracias por llamar al Mercantil, que tenga buenas tardes.

-Yo: %&/($#%&#&#

A eso le llamo SER TORPE, INEPTA, INCAPAZ, INCOMPETENTE, INÚTIL. Lo siento, sé que es una mujer y merece respeto, pero no puedo ser más sutil. Punto.

(part one of many, I expect)

Today I ran up to the grocery store after work for a few things. I say ‘ran’ but you all understand I ‘drove’ there right? You also understand when I said ‘a few things’ I meant $200 worth, right? Yes, we know how this works…

So after returning home, I ate some of my very recently purchased food and watched part one of three of the A&E production of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Then, quietly I retired upstairs to the computer room – formerly the master bedroom – and took an ever-so-fleeting glance at my email. What did my loving eyes behold, but a notice of an electronic greeting card from non other than… my wife!

Now, I expected perhaps some communication from her. Perhaps she would have sent me a quick note on having a good day teaching English (she found a job – no scratch that – she had a job thrust upon her, and she just so happened to be well qualified and accepted it) or a list of things she wishes me to send her ‘across the big pond’. Nope, it was a card!

In addition to the pre-written words that came with the card – very romantic already – she added her own coda of course. I think this is the second e-card I have received from my adoring wife (who is also adored), in as many weeks. This time, as the first, I felt the moisture swelling up behind my eyelids, just a bit. That kind of feeling where you are not sure if you are going to cry or not. You only get this way when you have been truly touched in a very positive manner, and usually this emotion has originated from someone who loves you.

Now, you the public do not get to read the exact text of course, but the sign-off she used at the end of the card included the words ’saved me’. This intrigued me. For the only thing I can think of that said loving wife could mean with those words is that she wholly appreciates my efforts to remove her from the realm of bachelorette-hood which culminated on a glorious day this past April. However, I see this as no huge feat, since it was a good many months before that fine April afternoon that we both knew we were going to be together forever. Yes folks, that means not only this life, but the next, and the next, etc. (I am personally hoping for an infinite number of lives, where in each we are together and in each we grow and learn about many things, most of which we cannot imagine in our current forms.) Yeah, call me a hopeless romantic. She does, and she is always right. Or is that, “I am always right”?

You have seen some examples of little things you can do already on this blog, and perhaps more have just occurred to you: send a real letter to your loved one, drop in a surprise e-card once in a while, send a randomly timed text message with a sentence of encouragement or simply an “I love you”. Never forget the surprise care package in the mail or phone call (or internet call, if you prefer;*) to explain how your loved ones eyes sparkle with such life as would calm a Pacific cyclone… Just like my wife’s do, everyday. :-*

* Long distance is one of the few deregulated monopolies – at least in the USA – that really did result in lower costs to consumers. Remember that when you scholars out there write the history books!
