WEB OPAC คือ ฐานข้อมูลทรัพยากรสารสนเทศ (Online Public Access Catalog – OPAC) เป็นฐานข้อมูลรายการบรรณานุกรมที่หน่วยงาน สถาบันหรือแหล่งบริการสารสนเทศนั้นๆ จัดทำขึ้น เพื่อเป็นเครื่องมือช่วยค้นหาและชี้แหล่งทรัพยากรให้กับผู้ใช้ในการค้นหาหนังสือ บทความวารสาร โสตทัศนวัสดุ รายงานการวิจัย วิทยานิพนธ์ ฯลฯ ซึ่งมีความสะดวก รวดเร็วและค้นหาได้ตลอด 24 ชั่วโมง เนื่องจากแหล่งบริการสารสนเทศส่วนใหญ่ใช้ระบบออนไลน์บนอินเตอร์เน็ต การสืบค้นสามารถทำได้ง่าย เช่น การค้นด้วยชื่อผู้แต่ง ชื่อเรื่อง หัวเรื่อง คำสำคัญ เลขเรียกหนังสือ ซึ่งใช้หลักการสืบค้นเช่นเดียวกับการสืบค้นด้วยบัตรรายการ

This summer, I was the co-editor of Capture, and on the Editorial Board of Alfred, E-Journals at the University of Winchester. I undertook a number of interviews, re-edited those interviews into workable pieces for submission, re-edited a number of other pieces (including reducing 10,000 word Final Year Projects, to 3,000 word articles, without losing the essential meaning of those articles), and co-wrote an article on Web Accessibility for those with recorded disabilities. These journals have their official launch at the Learning and Teaching Development morning today.

Capture
CAPTURE was launched in 2008. It is an e-journal highlighting L&T at the University of Winchester. Material for the journal is collected and edited by staff at the LTDU, and is an important way of the results of L&T funding being disseminated.

Alfred
The success of CAPTURE prompted the development of ALFRED which showcases excellent undergraduate student work at the University of Winchester. The HEA have appealed to universities to provide further opportunities for students to engage with the research process, and generate their own research. ALFRED demonstrates how students are undertaking high quality research and gives them the opportunity to have their work published.

Nach den bereits verfügbaren Modulen der Datenbank Beck-Online haben Studenten und Hochschulangehörige der Hochschule Coburg nun Zugriff auf weitere Onlinedokumente der Verlage C.H.Beck und Nomos.

Die Datenbank  ist eine Rechtsdatenbank und beinhaltet verschiedene Onlinedokumente zur Rechtsprechung. Von jedem PC der Hochschule mit Internet-Zugang sind folgende Online-Volltexte verfügbar:

  sämtliche online erschienen Werke des Verlages C.H.Beck und ausgewählte Bücher des Nomos-Verlages
• E-Journals
  ca. 70 elektronische Zeitschriften für die Bereiche Recht und Wirtschaft im Volltext

  Gesetzessammlungen, welche auch den Schönfelder oder den Sartorius beinhalten. Er umfasst nicht nur Gesetze im formellen Sinn, sondern auch Verordnungen, Verwaltungsvorschriften, EU-Recht, Unterhaltstabellen und -leitlinien etc.

  Sammlung von Gerichtsentscheidungen
• Arbeitshilfen
  dabei handelt es sich um Berechnungsprogramme
• Formulare
• Verwaltunganweisungen

Innerhalb des Campus kann die Datenbank von jedem Computer aufgerufen werden. Der Zugriff vom eigenen PC daheim ist leider aus lizenztechnischen Gründen nicht möglich.

Im Bereich Wirtschaft wurden drei Fachmodule von dem Verlag “Neue Wirtschafts-Briefe” (NBW) freigeschalten für die Hochschule Coburg:

• NWB Rechnungswesen
• NWB Unternehmenssteuern und Bilanzen
• NWB Internationales Steuer- und Wirtschaftsrecht

Über die Datenbank des NBW Verlages können alle drei Module inhaltlich durchsucht werden. Der Inhalt besteht hauptsächlich aus den Zeitschriften “Buchführung Bilanzierung Kostenrechnung” (BBK Rechnungswesen), “Steuern und Bilanzen” (StuB online) und “Internationale Wirtschaftsbriefe” (IWB online). Daneben können verschieden Berechnungsprogramme und Musterverträge aus den lizenzierten Modulen aufgerufen werden.

Von den drei Zeitschriften können die letzten drei Jahrgänge (ab Heft 17/2007) im Volltext gelesen werden.

Ab sofort ist der Zugriff auf drei E-Journals der American Marketing Association (AMA) möglich:

• Journal of Marketing
• Journal of international Marketing
• Journal of Marketing Research

Das Archiv für alle drei Zeitschriften geht zurück bis zur ersten Ausgabe 2000 und beinhaltet immer das neueste erschienene Heft.

Innerhalb der Hochschule kann die Zeitschrift von jedem Rechner aus gelesen werden, auch via WLAN. Für die Arbeit vom eigenen Rechner daheim, muss sich über den VPN-Server der Hochschule eingeloggt werden. (Erklärung VPN-Zugriff)

Seems a ridiculous question perhaps?

Well in days gone by, publishing referred to getting a book or magazine printed so that it would reach a wide audience. In some cases this was done for educational purposes, in some cases it was done to make money.

The concept of getting your ideas to reach a wide audience is as valid today as it has ever been. The purposes of publishing for education and for income remain.

However, the audience can now be wider than ever and is more easily accessed, thanks to computers and the internet.

These days, publishing is not restricted to physically printing something and making it available to others. Publishing includes material posted on the internet (like e-journals*, e-zines*, e-books*) and material available in digital or electronic form (PDFs** and CDs).

So let your creativity roam free, and get publishing!

* e-journal = electronic journal; e-zine = electronic magazine;
e-book = electronic book
**  PDF = portable document format (does not care what operating system you computer uses)

The Rutherford Journal is published annually. At the time of writing there were two issues freely available online.
This journal is edited from the Philosophy Department at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and invites contributions from international scholars in the history and philosophy of science and technology.

The International Journal of Scientific History is a freely available full-text e-journal, edited from Florida Sate University. Published three times a year, sample article titles include: ‘

Professor Shurkova speaks clearly about a problem facing Russian educators since the fall of Communism. Under the Soviet Union, the schools had a moral force that guided all their activities, Communist theory. Trained ideologues guided every school in all aspects of curriculum and activity. Parents were motivated by the party in a variety of ways to support the schools. Students had the motivation of party youth organizations and the pressures on their parents to conform, behave, and study. With the changes of the past twenty years, educators have seen their former moral authority dissolve along with the Communist philosophy. The search began to replace the highly organized structure of former times with a replacement. Will it be the Russian Orthodox Church? Will it be a Western view of Democracy? Will it be a philosophy and structure developed in Russia by Russian educators themselves? Professor Shurkova describes her hopes and those of other educators for an ideal leader/moral authority who, with true, Russian values and real, Russian solutions help rescue their schools. I feel that this article accurately describes the deep desire of Russian educators for a just, fair, kind, humane, ethical, and deeply intellectual future for their students.

Professor Shurkova’s prospective in her article comes as a surprise to me.  The last line, “I trust that there is only one thing which is truly difficult for a school principal and that is to stop being just an administrator” is untrue for any of the principals that I know.  A successful principal needs to be able to take care of the administrative portion of the job, but the focus should be on the students.  In order to increase student achievement in all areas; “manage” the day-to-day running of a school; ensure that the students’ and staff’s emotional well-being is considered and enhanced; and that the morale of all stakeholders is cultivated, a principal must use distributive leadership.  No one person can be all things to all people all the time.  Principals have to surround themselves with “superstars” and use the strengths of those people to help move the school ahead. 

 I agree with Professor Shurkova’s take on how a principal should “put these values into practice daily.”  A principal should be visible to the students and staff and also be approachable, friendly, and positive.  Greeting people as they enter the building, calling students by their names, remembering important events in the staff and students’ lives and referring to them, and most importantly, not being “scary” are all activities that I engage in each day, as do the other principals I know. 

It seems that there is a longing among principals in Russia to be given the opportunity to grow as leaders and to focus on the needs of the students, not just the buildings.  My hope is that they are given the professional development, time, and resources needed to achieve their goal.

Nature Publishing Group has launched the first issue of a new Nature journal, Nature Chemistry.  April 2009 sees Volume 1, Issue 1 feature a variety of articles including ‘Powering the planet with solar fuel’ by Harry B Gray and ‘Interrogating biology with a chemical lexicon’ by Barbara Imperiali – as you can see, the journal is not just for chemists!
