Posting lalu membedah upaya keras produsen untuk bisa memasukkan keyboard ke dalam saku, dan kalau tidak bisa, cukup menempel di celana saja atau baju…

Layar monitor tak mau kalah; sedemikian kecilnya hingga kita tidak tahu untuk apa. Interaksi terjadi bolak-balik antara produsen dan kita sebagai pemakai, di mana kehadiran produk baru diharapkan menumbuhkan kreativitas pemakai menciptakan berbagai produk IT yang belum terpikirkan sekarang. Mau dijadikan kamera super miniatur yang bisa menelusuri berbagai bagian dalam tubuh manusia sambil merekam foto? Bisa. Wow.

Atau, dijadikan susuk ditanam di bawah permukaan kulit? Untuk membuat catatan kecil atau jadi layar telepon seluler di lengan? Bisa. Atau diproyeksikan ke kaca mata (dan kaca depan mobil)? Bisa, dan yang lebih ekstrim lagi, menjadi bagian dari lensa kontak! Benar?

Benar. Kalau sudah begini semua itu mungkin; yes, nothing is impossible. Produk IT seperti komputer, telepon genggam, kamera … nantinya seperti pakaian alias fesyen. Tinggal pakai. Hands free! Wireless! Wow.

Kita jadi wireless? Pakaian bisa terhubung ke internet? Wah, asyik juga. Nantilah kita lihat. Bersiaplah berpikir dari sekarang bagaimana bisa mengambil keuntungan/manfaat sebesar-besarnya kalau produk itu ada nanti.

Sementara kita bedah layar monitor untuk membaca teks dulu. Produk ini segera diluncurkan tahun depan ke pasar dunia termasuk Indonesia, tentunya. Beberapa istilah dipakai bagi produk IT ini, e-paper atau e-reader. Ada yang warna, ada yang belum.

Kapasitas muat informasi e-reader bervariasi, sekitar 10.000 halaman atau sekitar 40 kg (A4, 80 gram), bahkan lebih. Berapa buku itu, ya? Anak-anak siswa dan mahasiswa beruntung, lebih cepat pintar karena gurunya ada dua, yang di depan kelas dan di dalam e-reader, kalau dilengkapi suara. Mudah melengkapi e-reader dengan suara, animasi, dan video.

Bisa ditulisi? Tentu, satu produsen sudah mendahului (lihat gambar, kanan). Ada warna, bisa ditulisi. Belum ada nama, tetapi nama e-reader tentunya tidak cocok. Mungkin e-RW-er (bace ‘ewer-ewer’, reader and writer)? Seperti di harddisk atau CD itu, ya. Itulah hebatnya kemajuan miniaturisasi transistor, satu komponen kecil elektronika, yang sanggup dibuat lebih kecil dari ukuran bakteri(!). Komponen ini andalan semua produk IT yang kita saksikan sekarang dan yang akan datang.

Kalau harga sudah terjangkau, anak-anak generasi berikutnya tentu tidak perlu lagi menggendong ransel yang berat itu, sarat dengan buku pelajaran dan buku tulis untuk mencatat.  Semogalah cepat terwujud…

Mens magazine Esquire isn’t going to just sit around and watch print die. Oh no. The people behind the scenes are working hard to come up with ideas that combine digital with the analog. Augmented Reality is what they came up with this year. Tech savvy readers will remember that Esquire pulled a similar marketing stunt last year with their e-paper covers.

Augmented reality is an image embedded in that digital block that you see between Robert Downey Jr’s legs. Yes, the one he’s beckoning you to scan with your webcam. Augmented reality technology allows a camera to be pointed at that little digital barcode that stores information. The camera will then translate that digital pixels into something meaningful to the viewer. So, you hold your magazine up to a webcam, and through a special program, you can see something on that digital barcode that you cannot see in reality, thus the name augmented reality.

The technology is starting to gain traction in the advertising and marketing world. The possibilities are endless, and certainly would engage the reader to connect the analog and digital limitations. Will we see a lot more augmented reality? Absolutely. Is AR going to replace traditional print advertising? Doubtful. The lazy in all of us wouldn’t invest more time into an advertisement unless the AR was polygon of a naked chick. It’s a gimmick for now, only for true tech geeks. Looks like print survives another day.

This is relevant to anyone working on e-books, particularly those concerned with screen contrast levels, as it seems to offer better contrast than many e-book readers currently available.

Xerox has developed a silver ink that can be used to print electronic circuits on fabrics, films, and materials other than boards.

Where silicon is the current standard for circuitry boards, the new ink allows electronic components to be integrated into apparel and flexible surfaces.

The printing industry is quite excited right now due to the rapidly developing field of printable electronics. The technology will allow for innovations ranging from flexible e-paper displays (which, in turn, could radically change the way we read books), more easily manageable RFID tags, product packaging and, among other things, animated posters. It looks as though this business is going to be a winner. Certainly, by the sound of the technology itself, it’s hard to deny that the world is poised for a major shift in the way it does paper and printing.

Samsung have created a new colour e-paper display that measures 10.1 inches. Right now it’s just a prototype and it has a contrast ratio of just 10:1 making it not too clear at all. The screen also only has the ability to reproduce 7% of the NTSC colours. Yes, it could be a while before it goes in to production but it is a great step in the right direction.

Samsung aim to have the colour e-paper available in about 2 years time which will be about a year after PVI create colour displays for both Kindles and Sony Readers.

With more colour e-paper displays being mentioned recently it seems like we might have a nice choice of full colour eBook readers late next year to compete with each other.

Os próximos meses prometem um pouco mais de diversão para o mercado de e-Readers. A Samsung acaba de apresentar, em uma feira no Japão, um protótipo de e-paper colorido. Finalmente.

O dispositivo é feito de uma combinação entre substrato TFT, e-paper e filtro colorido. O e-paper colorido da Samsung tem 0,7 milímetros de espessura, resolução de 450 por 600 pixels e taxa de contraste de 10:1.

A Samsung pretende lançar produtos com a nova tecnologia em um ou dois anos.

Så er den første digitale lørdagsavis fra Børsen kommet online. Og på Børsen har de ikke taget nogen chancer, men lavet en 16 siders e-paper med vægt på, at den skal tage sig lækkert ud. Det er lykkedes, og når de første par barnesko er udtrådt, kan Børsen lørdag blive rigtig god.

Børsen lørdag er bygget på en platform fra zmags, som er intuitiv at finde rundt i. Blandt andet er der et oversigtskort, hvor man kan se alle siderne og rent faktisk ganske let visuelt afkode, hvad de enkelte sider handler om. Samtidig er loadtiden ret kort, så man har fornemmelsen af at bladre rundt i avisen.

Kommunikationsværktøjer

På forsiden bliver man mødt af korte trailere, der præsenterer artiklerne i avisen. Det fungerer, og det samme gør de tv-indslag, der er en del af hver “artikel”. Artiklerne består af fire elementer: 1) korte tekster, 2) tv-indslag, 3) ekstra billedmateriale (foto) samt 4) fakta og information. Sidstnævnte kan indholdsmæssigt blive meget stærkere, men det kommer nok hen ad vejen.

Vin, bil, bolig og Mærsk (erhverv). Det er redaktionens fire udvalgte. Et meget konservativt valg, som ikke skræmmer abonnenterne, men bestemt heller ikke udfordrer dem. Her skal man på sigt være mere ambitiøs, hvis man vil skille sig ud fra mængden. Og det skal man ville.

ChemNetzBib wird der neue Service der Stadtbibliothek Chemnitz heißen. Kunden der Stadtbibliothek können künftig ohne gesonderte Anmeldung sofort und rund um die Uhr online eMedien ausleihen. Das Angebot umfasst ca. 55% eBooks, rund 35% eAudios, ca. 10% eVideos und eine kleine Auswahl an ePapern.

Mit den eMedien möchte die Bibliothek vor allem internetaffine Berufstätige sowie junge Leute erreichen, die sonst eher selten den Weg in die physische Bibliothek finden. Die ChemNetzBib ist daher kein elektronisches 1:1-Abbild unserer realen Stadtbibliothek, sondern vielmehr eine mobile Schwerpunktbibliothek, die sich zunächst auf Medien zur beruflichen Aus- und Weiterbildung, Schülerhilfen zur Klausur- und Prüfungsvorbereitung, Sachliteratur und Ratgeber zu verschiedensten Alltagsthemen und Medien zur Freizeitgestaltung spezialisiert hat. Bei den einzelnen Medien handelt es sich um Angebote renommierter Verlage, die wir einzeln für Sie ausgewählt haben.

Das Interesse an elektronischen Medien ist groß. Mit der Verbreitung von Smartphones und E-Book-Readern gewinnt vor allem der mobile Medienkonsum an Bedeutung, aber auch die verbesserte Suchmöglichkeit in Volltexten ist ein entscheidender Vorteil in der Nutzung elektronischer Medien. Vor einigen Monaten hatten wir eine nichtrepräsentative Blitzumfrage im Blog durchgeführt, bei der sich ein Großteil unserer teilnehmenden Blogleser solche Medien wünschte. Ein Kommentar hierauf:

Zugegeben, ganz ohne Digitales Rechtemanagement (DRM) geht es (noch) nicht und daher haben wir unseren Kasten Bier mit diesem ersten Schritt auch noch nicht verdient… Aber wir nehmen uns einfach schon mal ein Fläschchen heraus und heben uns den Rest gegebenenfalls für später auf.

Oltre ad un e-reader da 20 pollici a basso consumo e scala di grigi a 16 livelli e stato mostrato uno schermo flessibile da 6 pollici. Quest’ultimo adotta la tecnologia Microcup di Sipix, incorpora uno strato plastico ed è piegabile rendendolo molto simile ai fogli reali in carta. Sarà portatile ed indistruttibile ( a detta di AUO ). Dovrebbe essere prodotto nel 2010. Nell’occasione è stato presentato anche un e-book reader da 9 pollici.

A Western Digital anunciou uma novidade em sua família de discos rígidos externos, receberam e-paper (papel electrónico) que mostram a quantidade exata da capacidade de armazenamento restante e uma etiqueta personalizavel, mesmo não estando ligado ao computador.

Le fameux e-paper. Lors de mon premier cours d’introduction à la communication à l’Université d’Ottawa, il y a de cela 4 ans, mon professeur en parlait déjà comme la nouvelle technologie à venir. Par contre, même si ce professeur prétendait que le e-paper était déjà en mode d’essai au Japon… je n’en ai jamais vu un de mes yeux vu.

Également appelé papier électronique ou encre électronique, il serait mince et souple comme une feuille de papier, nécessiterait peu ou pas d’énergie et nous permettrait de lire articles de journaux ou livres soit par abonnement ou téléchargement.

Je suis entièrement d’accord, Macmaitre, avec le plaisir qu’offre l’utilisation d’un livre traditionnel. Le livre de papier, on peut l’ouvrir et le fermer à notre guise, le transporter partout avec soi, il ne nécessite pas un deuxième élément pour qu’il soit utilisable (fil d’alimentation, pile) et il enrichi à merveille la collection d’une bibliothèque. Cependant, contrairement à un écran d’ordinateur (ou encore au livre électronique et application sur Ipod) qui produit de la lumière, l’e-paper se distinguerait plutôt en reflétant la lumière comme un papier le ferait. Il serait donc plus convivial. Pour cette raison, je serais prête à l’essayer.

De plus, le groupe FAN 2009 a publié le 22 septembre 2009 un article sur Actualités Presse et Édition et nous relance avec des arguments favorisant le e-paper. Voici des extraits de ce qu’ils avancent : « À l’occasion du Forum des Acteurs du Numérique, qui se tient les 29 et 30 septembre prochains au CNIT – Paris La Défense, l’IDATE sort une étude dédiée au marché de l’e-paper.

• Dans un contexte de dématérialisation des contenus et de diminution des revenus (…) le secteur de la presse se penche logiquement vers cette technologie comme un support complémentaire, offrant une nouvelle approche de l’information (plus réactive). Le passage à l’électronique permet aussi la réduction des coûts de matières premières, de fabrication et de distribution (jusqu’à 60% des coûts).
• Le monde de l’édition s’attend à un basculement progressif vers le numérique, profitant des atouts de l’électronique (indexation, stockage, évolutivité, interactivité, bonus type DVD) et des grandes initiatives de numérisation.
• L’édition générale avance lentement (…) et les éditeurs sont déjà nombreux à se positionner autour du Kindle d’Amazon, qui propose un reader connecté en 3G (connectivité incluse), quelques services intégrés (dont l’accès gratuit et illimité à Wikipedia) et une plate-forme de distribution de contenus avec notamment un prix standard de 9.99 USD pour la liste des best sellers du New York Times .
• Le terminal e-Paper peut en effet embarquer des contenus volumineux et être utilisé en situation nomade (faible consommation, faible poids), même en environnement extrême. (…), l’e-Paper devrait percer d’abord sur des applications de type guide de tourisme. »

Ils affirment même que «le marché de l’e-Paper est encore modeste, mais devrait atteindre les 2 milliards USD d’ici 2012, avec un véritable décollage en 2010, autour de seulement quelques applications ».

Un véritable décollage en 2010… vraiment ? Ça reste à voir !

The direction of interactive media technology has so many innovative paths. Nanotechnology and augmented human inventions, such as pace makers and neuro-networks, was just the tip of the iceberg. However, what caught my attention was the idea of e-ink, e-paper and Americhips. It used to seem like the new advances were causing other things to go extinct…but some of them are putting up a fight and adapting!

For many people print media seems to have a pretty bleak outlook, but more recently newspapers and magazines are finding ways to transform themselves into hybrid media forms. The creation of e-ink and e-paper has translated the traditional “black ink on your hands” print to an interactive touch screen that displays the appearance of a regular newspaper.  The audience will then be able to participate with the technological screen and get updates on what’s going on in the world.

Magazines are also testing out a more Harry Potter like method through the use of Americhips. These tiny chips and screens are placed into a page of the magazine, which will showcase and play actual video pieces or advertisements. So when you open up your recent magazine purchase, you will be able to experience both hot and cool media. Don’t believe me? Check out Entertainment Weekly’s plan to deliver their magazine that incorporates Americhips to their customers in New York.  Depending on the reactions of the public, this could become a norm for this type of media.

Since print media is trying to be proactive about keeping up with our ever-changing technology, I am starting to think that maybe they aren’t leaving this world as soon as I anticipated. Maybe they are just evolving. What do you think? Are they here to stay?
