“I’m gonna put America back on the track”. J’entends encore aujourd’hui résonner cette phrase en moi depuis la première fois où, au clair obscur d’une nuit glacée à Tananarive, RFI rapportait le discours du fraîchement investi candidat démocrate à la présidence états-unienne, un certain 27 août 2008. L’enthousiasme irradiant délivré au son de la verve unificatrice de Barack Obama (BO) traversait par une incoercible énergie les ondes radiophoniques de Washington jusqu’aux hautes terres de l’Ile Rouge. L’espoir venait de naître. La révolution était en marche.

Deux mois plus tard, Barack Hussein Obama, fils de l’union des cultures, fruit de l’audace et de la détermination, enfant de l’Histoire, accédait à la magistrature suprême des Etats-Unis d’Amérique. Son élection faisait ainsi mentir une large frange des commentateurs et imprécateurs de France, où une idéologie péremptoire, une quasi-mode d’anti-américanisme primaire s’était développée depuis l’ère Bush. Le peuple américain venait de réaliser ce que celui de France ne semble pas prêt, encore à ce jour, ne serait-ce qu’à imaginer. Elire un président noir.

Et depuis ? Voilà un an aujourd’hui que BO a été élu. Aux responsabilités effectives depuis le 20 janvier 2009, jour de son investiture, soit un peu plus de neuf mois, que dire, que penser de son action ? Des avancées, des difficultés également, mais aucune volte-face. La crise du capitalisme dégénéré est passée par là. De plus, le conflit irsaélo-palestinien, l’Irak, l’Afghanistan, le Pakistan, l’Iran, l’environnement se révèlent des sujets épineux à la complexité croissante. Et la marge de manoeuvre dont jouit le jeune prix Nobel de la Paix s’avère étroite.

Laissons lui le temps. Que ses détracteurs s’empressent dès aujourd’hui de brailler sans briller par leur zèle politico-idéologique sur plateau médiatique, c’est leur droit. Les esprits sages et raisonnés savent qu’il est inutile de jeter l’anathème sur un espoir en marche. Le président Obama n’est ni un magicien, ni le chamane providentiel de tous les maux de notre monde. Quatre ans c’est court pour remettre un pays sur la voie du progrès. Il ne serait pas inutile que les censeurs ampoulés de notre société de l’instantané et du retour sur investissement immédiat, se parent des sages vertus de la patience. Pour une fois. Au moins jusqu’à la mi-mandat. Rendez-vous pris en janvier 2011.

Pour conclure, en clin d’oeil au premier anniversaire de l’accession de Barack Obama à la présidence des Etats-Unis, je vous propose un poème que j’ai écrit le lendemain de son élection, le 4 novembre 2008.

Des frissons ardents de la nuit euphorique,

Mitternacht, SO36, Skalitzer, Späthunger, Stammdöner hat schon zu. Also Plan B, Falafel, der Laden hat noch auf. Plan C eigentlich, denn die jungen Falafistas sind erfahrungsgemäß wesentlich mieser drauf als ihre osmanischen Kollegen – die haben u.U. zwar auch Ansichten über Gott und die Welt, die man nicht unbedingt hören möchte, behalten sie aber locker für sich, vor allem ungefragt.

Falafel € 2.50. Eine Ecke weiter wartet eigentlich das Spätbier mit Lektüre der Tagespresse, aber draußen ist es kalt, also keine Falafel to go, sondern to stay. Der Falafista ist freundlich, einsam mit dem einzigem Gast im Raum, sucht das Gespräch. Der Gast möchte nicht unfreundlich sein, will auch nicht in der B.Z. blättern, meint ohnehin, dass man mit diesen jungen Menschen gelegentlich Austausch pflegen muss, es hilft ja nichts. Man guckt ja auch ab und zu in die Bild-, National- oder Islamische Zeitung, in die jW, das ND oder die JF. Sehen, was die Jungs so treiben. Nein, BILD ist kein Faschoblatt, so war es nicht gemeint, aber die Lektüre macht auch keinen Spaß. Der junge Mann ist kaum zu verstehen. Ägypter, wohl erst seit kurzem hier. Hat sich erkennbar bemüht, in kurzer Zeit halbwegs kommunikationsfähig zu werden. Wird sicher noch. Schlagend ungebildet, aber kein Dummy, interessiert, neugierig, allerdings verdächtig mitteilungsbedürftig. Kennt man, ahnt Schlimmes, hofft, dass es diesmal eine angenehme Enttäuschung bestehender Vorurteile wird. Der Tagesabschluss nervt etwas, soll erträglich bleiben. Hinweis auf den Arab Human Development Report. Sei alles nicht ganz so toll. Said: aber in Ägypten schon! Nein, auch da nicht so richtig.

Die nächsten Minuten verschwimmen etwas in der Erinnerung. Said ist erregter, aber nicht unhöflich. Amerikaner und Europäer waren schon genannt worden. Da fehlt doch jemand? Said ist nicht unverständig, lässt das Argument gelten, wechselt das Thema: Ob der Gast wisse, dass viertausend Juden 9/11 rechtzeitig das Gebäude verlassen hätten, von ihrer Regierung gewarnt? Ab jetzt geht es bergab. Der Gast entgegnet, ihm sei dies als häufige Darstellung der Presse der islamischen Welt bekannt, er glaube es aber nicht, das täte in Europa kaum jemand. Erst wenn “wir eure Töchter ficken und zum Islam bekehren”, würden wir wohl nachgeben. Obwohl vulgär im Ton und aggressiv im Inhalt, bleibt Said ruhig und gesprächsbereit. Vermutlich kennt er das deutsche Wort vergewaltigen noch nicht, vermutlich entspricht es auch nicht dem andernorts tradierten Verständnis von Kriegsführung, das Verfügung über die Beute als legitimen Regelfall kennt. Die angedrohten Übel sind auch nicht ungebührlich böse gemeint, es geht ja nicht anders, entspricht dem notwendigen Lauf der Dinge angesichts der Umstände.

Die Falafel ist aufgegessen, Gäste kommen, bestellen auf arabisch. Es gäbe noch Fragen. Warum reicht es nicht, wenn es denn schon sein muss, Europa mit Gewalt von der Unterstützung Israels abzuhalten? Warum auch noch die restlichen Maßnahmen? Ungestellte Fragen. Is this merely a way for Obama and his new age Illuminati members to introduce the mark of the beast of the new age Masonic godhead Annuit Coeptis/Yodh recall in Revelation 17:8-13 the G7 to the G8 to the ninth son of light Barack Ishmael Obama who will lead the world into the sin of perdition so that they can make war with the Lamb of God Almighty. 

Are these three characters not the completion of Revelation 16:13-16 the three unclean spirits that come out of the mouth of the red dragon, the beast and the false prophet (Baalim).

The abomination of the above is that they believe he GW was the fulfillment of Isaiah 9:6.

Obviously blinding the masses into the ungodly concept that George Washington (Lucifer) is as their fatherhood of god (1) which led them to believe that GW (Lucifer) is their alpha (1) and their omega (1).

Recall there is an unholy trinity godhead namely Annuit Coeptis (1)/E Pluribus Unum (1)/Yodh (1) godhead, it must be understood 111 has another dark side or secret to it, meaning from the death number of Lamech 777 + 111 equals to 888 + 111 equals to 999.

Is it a coincidence or fact that from September the 11th of each year to the new year of the regular calendar there are always 111 days.

To get understanding to the mysterious number of General George Washington being 111, is to study the trilateral events that calculate to his 111 number.

Needless to say, the Battle of Brandywine which started on the 11th of September (111) yet in 1777, is the first 1, to the building of the Pentagon in Washington DC, which was on the 11th of September (111) yet in 1941 as the second 1, to the declaration of the new world order as a rule of law which was on the 11th of September (111) yet in 1991 as the third 1.    

It must be understood, that this holy number of 111, simply relates to the hidden agenda of the Washington Monument in DC, which secretly measures 111ft under the ground.

Bear in mind the Washington monument in DC, measures 555ft in height equalling to the number of a man 666 (Revelation 13:17-18).

Yet if you add George Washington Blue Cornerstone Temple known as the Alexandria Lodge numbered 22, which is based in Virginia, measures 333ft in height.

Obviously 111ft of the under ground facility of GW Monument in DC  + it outer measurement of 555ft, obviously to equals to the mark of the beast, 666 + the 333ft height of GW Alexandria Lodge in Virginia, simply equals or adds up to the Phoenix Computer mythical bird number of 999.

Unknown to many 999 is the reverse of 666. Ying and Yang

Yet unknown to the masses, the world over, 3 x 666 equals to 1998 recall then President Bill Clinton also known as the G7 (Yod7) Leader said from the steps of the Cape Town City Hall based in the new Yod Jewish/Egyptian Masonic converted South Africa in 1998 via national TV “I saw you come from darkness to light.”  
 
Recall if you times 999 by 2, it mysteriously also equals to the year of 1998. 

In other words the calculation of 111 to the 777 which leads all to 888 plus 111 leads all to the computer beast number of the Phoenix 999.

Is this part of the mystery that has been hid from the ages and generations found in the scripture prophecy of Colossians 1:26.

Unknown this mystery number of 999 leads all to the year of 1999, which secretly relates to the NASA Masonic conspiracy plan of rising the mythical bird titled as E Pluribus Unum known by the hierarchy of the new age Freemasonry, as the Phoenix (999) who shall rise from the the ashes, which is scriptually known as the bottomless pit Hades. 

Recall the other name for the Phoenix is the Latin term “Annuit Coeptis” which translates to English as “He that is god by the undertaking of the people.”

In other words by the peoples demand the beast will be risen up from the bottomless pit (Revelation 13:1-18) which will entitle him to make war with the Lamb of God Almighty refer to Revelation 17:8-14.   

Needless to say the 224 years from September 11, 1777 to September 11, 2001, equals to 224 years + the eight years to 2009 equals to 232.

This mystery or ungodly number of 232, has a massive dark side or secret to it, meaning Ouroboros.

It’s time for a “Rant” with no “Observation.”

Featured on the front of the Great Seal of the United States of America are the words “E Pluribus Unum.” “Pluribus” is related to the English word “plural” and “Unum” is related to the English word “unit.” The direct translation of the term is “Out of many, one.”

Apparently, many of our elected leaders have forgotten (or don’t know) what this means. Their exploitation of cultural issues is an attempt to keep us divided for their personal gain. Politicizing these issues is a disservice to our country and is certainly not in step with the ideals they have been elected to uphold. Those who suppress, intimidate, belittle or dismiss portions of our citizenship because of race, color, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or income level have failed to grasp the concept of “E Pluribus Unum.”

We are called the “United” States of America, not the “Divided” States of America. We’ve already had our Civil War, and those who no longer wanted to enslave human beings, won, with much blood and treasure expended. Yet, it seems there are those who would like nothing better than to reverse that outcome.

They are not accepting of anyone who looks or believes differently than them. They’re right and everyone else is wrong. Theirs is the only accurate interpretation of The Constitution. Theirs is the only way to “run” this country. Theirs is the only way to believe in God or be a good Christian. They say they are tolerant, but tolerance is not acceptance. If it were up to them, we would go back to the days of white supremacy with all people of color being only “two-thirds human.”

Now that we have our first black President, those supportive of the lunacy we’ve seen since his election are being exposed. I couldn’t be happier. Let them make asses out of themselves for the nation – and the world – to see. Once they’re embarrassed enough, they’ll retreat to privacy, and those with constructive ideas for moving our country forward will engage with the ideals set forth in our Great Seal.

We’ve had enough “Pluribus.” It’s time for some “Unum.”

“The world has need of your theology,” said prominent Harvard theologian Diana Eck last year to one of our sister congregations in New York City. “In a world divided by race, and by religion and ideology, the very presence of a church like yours—committed to the oneness of God, the love of God, the love of neighbor, and service to humanity—is a beacon. Be bold in proclaiming it!” That’s what Diana Eck said.

But before boldness of proclamation, there must be a boldness of inner vision, of imagination. So this morning, I invite you to imagine boldly, along with me, this faith tradition, this religious movement, that the world needs. Imagine with me an image or series of images that captures our story, expresses it, telegraphs who we are and what we stand for.

For me, the boldness begins with a feeling of spaciousness, of size. I see in my mind’s eye blue sky, a bright sun, and a BIG building. Not a superdome or megamall—the values those kinds of architecture imply don’t fit. What comes to mind are the great structures of our religious past—Angkor Wat, the vast ancient Hindu temple complex in Cambodia; or Islam’s Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem; or Chartres Cathedral in Paris. Architecture that serves to embody spiritual aspiration in stone and wood and glass. Spaciousness and size…..

And at this point I find myself particularly taken with the image of cathedral, so I’m going to follow up with it, trust my imagination to take me where I need to go. Unitarian Universalism is like a great massive cathedral—a cathedral of the world.

But now my inner imaginative eye—like a movie camera—swoops down and gives me a close up of the foundation of it all. I see, at the base of the cathedral, in the ground, twin foundation stones, ancient, upon which all the rest is built. Twin foundation stones: one representing Unitarianism, and the other representing Universalism.

The Unitarian stone has a date carved into it: 325AD. It represents an idea that is a lot older, but 325 AD is when it gained a definite kind of historical notoriety. The idea says that Jesus is not equal to God—Jesus is not God—God is one. Classical Unitarianism. And in 325AD, it was formally declared heretical. One of the foundation stones of the entire cathedral of the world edifice embodies … heresy.

And so does the other. Carved into it is the date 544AD, when the Universalist idea was declared heretical: the idea that God will gather up all beings into himself; no one shall be lost in hell for all time. Believe that, said the orthodox of the time, and your soul is eternally condemned.

Now pause here for a moment. This is our Unitarian Universalist cathedral of the world we are talking about, and look at how it begins: in heresy. And already we know the risks, at least theologically: our souls condemned, so say the orthodox. But there are political risks as well, since theology and politics unarguably reflect and form each other (even where there is separation of church and state). 1500 years ago, for example, to stake your claim on Unitarianism was, in essence, to reject the absolute God-ordained lordship of the emperor. Not a convenient thing to do back then when the emperor claimed his rule WAS God-ordained. In order to solidify this, in fact, he gathered up all the most important religious leaders of his day by sheer military might and charged them with defining the articles of proper Christian belief—doing this once and for all. But the religious leaders ended up dickering and dithering and multiplying distinctions and tiny differences—clarity was not happening—so the emperor essentially had to threaten them by the sword to get their act together and vote like he wanted them to: against Unitarianism and for Trinitarianism. History calls this the Council of Nicea.

Being a heretic is neither convenient nor safe. But our cathedral of the world is not built on foundations of convenience. Heresy in its most positive sense means to choose. It means to think and act on the basis of one’s personal integrity, no matter what. It is courage. That’s what our twin foundation stones say about us, who we are as a people of faith. We must never forget this. Our faith was never meant to be easy.

But now it is time to enter into the cathedral. We pass the foundation stones as we walk through massive double-doors and into a vast space. We lift up our eyes to see amazing stained glass, through which light streams and illuminates. Can you see it, in your mind’s eye?

The first piece of stained glass our eyes rest on portrays Jesus. It reminds us that Unitarianism and Universalism are ultimately responses to experiences people had of the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Once he said, “I have come that you might have life, and have it in abundance,” and this is the gospel that launched us as well as so many other communities of faith, though through the long years there has been a branching effect, differences and distinctions multiplied in ways that no emperor could prevent for long, until today, one group’s definition of Christianity might be the exact opposite of another’s. As Unitarian Universalists, sometimes we grow anxious at our seeming inability to define ourselves in a once-and-for-all sort of way. But it is good to be reminded by the example of Christianity that the task of definition is hard all-around. There is no other side of the fence where the grass is greener. Even the most dogmatic, hard-line faiths have to work hard to keep their people straight.

But that’s another sermon. For now, we are gazing on and appreciating the great teacher and prophet, Jesus. Yet this is the cathedral or the world, and the wisdom we have to offer does not stop with Christianity. Today we are a more-than-Christian, post-Christian faith. Look just to the left, and you will see light streaming through a stained glass window that portrays the Buddha—perhaps that part of his life when he experiences illumination sitting at the base of a bo tree. Light shining through this, and through so many other stained glass windows. Moses with his Ten Commandments; Lao Tzu walking in remote misty mountains; Gandhi at his spinning wheel; Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. preaching “I have a dream.” Light shining and streaming through. We look up, and what we see is breathtaking. One light, many windows. Windows of the world’s great religions. Windows of prophetic women and men. Windows of science. Windows of humanism. Windows of earth-based spirituality. Windows of mysticism. Many windows, but one shining, streaming light of truth and meaning….

We have come a long way since the earliest Jesus communities of first century Palestine, or our moments of heresy in the fourth and sixth centuries. We’ve come a long way even since the 19th century, when American Unitarianism and American Universalism were Bible-centered and exclusively Christian.

And while there are many causes I could cite for this—for our expansion into a pluralistic faith—I will ask you simply to gaze upon yet another stained glass window in our cathedral of the world. There it is: it portrays the great Unitarian preacher and prophet of Transcendentalism: Ralph Waldo Emerson. “Live after the infinite Law that is in you,” he once said, “and in company with the infinite Beauty which heaven and earth reflect to you in all lovely forms.” Revelation, in other words, can’t possibly be contained just within the Hebrew or Christian Bible. The wellspring is fundamentally within each of our souls; revelation bubbles up out of the spark of the Divine in our depths. Add to this the revelation of nature, as well as the revelation embodied by the Bibles of many times and lands, such as Hinduism’s Bhagavad Gita. The one light of truth is abundant; no single stained-glass window may ever contain it or control it. One light but many, many windows.

So our job, says Emerson, is to live in the light. Let the light that comes to us through so many windows of truth and wisdom go deep and awaken the sleeping source of light within. Let sleeping heretics awaken, to choose with integrity and with courage what they shall believe about God and the afterlife and ethics and so many other things. Let sleeping heretics awaken and know their hidden powers for healing and action and compassion. Said Emerson in 1836, “Our age is retrospective. It builds on the sepulchers of the fathers. It writes biographies, histories, and criticism. The foregoing generations beheld God and nature face to face; we, through their eyes. Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? […] There are new lands, new men, new thoughts. Let us demand our own works and laws and worship.” In our cathedral of the world, there are already many stained glass windows, yet larger still is the space awaiting what is new. Your window, my window. Revelation is not ended. Revelation is not sealed. The journey never ends.

Yet at this point I need to acknowledge something. So far, we have seen that today’s Unitarian Universalism invites us on a great adventure of light. One light, many windows. Yet that is not all there is to our lives. And that’s not all there is in our cathedral of the world. For in our cathedral, there are plenty of shadows as well.

To understand what I mean, we need to learn a little more about Emerson’s life. Emerson’s father was a traditional minister who never blessed him. His first wife Ellen, who believed in him, who was his rock, died young … and death repeatedly struck his brothers and his own children. The man who wrote, “Hitch your wagon to a star” and “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds,” also wrote, “after thirty, a man wakes up sad every morning.” And then from his student days at Harvard: right in the middle of an essay he was writing about God, struggling with what those three little letters strung together refer to—his eyes failed him and he was able to see no light at all. Only after two surgeries and nine months of recuperation was he able to go back to wrestling with his theological studies.

If ever there was a man who loved light, it was Emerson. Yet the light never comes unmixed. Adversity is a part and parcel of the human condition. Shadow parts in ourselves and in our relationships lead to self-destructiveness and addictions and bad habits of every kind. Shadow parts in society and the larger world lead to structural poverty and prejudice and war. The light never comes unmixed.

Life is a great mystery. Unitarian Universalist minister Forrest Church puts it this way: “By the time we die, we will barely have gotten our minds wet. The wisest of us all will have but the faintest notion of what life was all about.” He goes on to say: “This counsels humility, but also oneness. … My favorite etymology speaks eloquently to this very point. Human, humane, humanitarian, humor, humility, humus.”

For me, what all of this leads to is my sense of the Unitarian Universalist religious journey as NOT a quest for certainty—NOT a quest for perfection in the here and now—but a quest for greater trust in the meaningfulness and worth of life, no matter where it leads. I need the abundance of light that streams and shines through the many windows of our cathedral of the world to encourage me, to strengthen me. I need it to waken the sleeping light within, as well, so that the abundance within me can be released. So that I can be a messenger of hope and humor to others, a messenger of compassion and peace. We live in a world that is so often unfair, and joy is weirdly and jarringly juxtaposed with every kind of woe. Randomness and senselessness and sorrow strike. Life can place so many limits on us. But there are no limits that can be placed on our human capacity to respond with courage and grace and forgiveness. There are no limits to this. Our greatest prophets and saints prove the point. Jesus. The Buddha. No limits to the abundance of the human heart to be generous in times of anxiety and fear. No limits to clarity or compassion. None.

Our cathedral of the world is all about abundance. Abundant choice, abundant light, abundant mystery, abundant capacity to respond to life with limitless love. “I have come that you might have life, and have it in abundance.”

But there is one more thing to notice, before we are done with this bold imaginative vision of who we are as a religious people—the vision we can proclaim boldly in the world. We have been looking up at the stained glass windows for a long time now, so now let’s look down at the floor. What we see is a Latin phrase: E pluribus unum. Out of many, one.

To me, this suggests how we see ourselves as a community of gathered seekers. It’s wonderfully infused by core American values which have themselves been shaped and formed by key Unitarian and Universalist leaders. The author of these words, for example: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” Words from the Declaration of Independence—written by Thomas Jefferson, Unitarian. It’s why our community affirms the inherent worth and dignity of each person. Why our community affirms the spirituality of the work of social justice to defend human dignity and restore it when others threaten to take it away. It’s why our community affirms open conversation in the context of supportive community. It’s why we affirm each individual journey of faith because we know that the Creator has a creative connection with each and every person here and now. This is the floor upon which we stand—the covenant that unites us and makes us whole. We need not think alike to love alike.

Consider another distinctly American phrase that resonates with us: “of the people, by the people, for the people.” Here is the classic definition of democracy, which Abraham Lincoln famously used in his Gettysburg Address. But it’s not original with him. He got it from Theodore Parker, one of our best Unitarian preachers in the 19th century, whose services would gather literally thousands of people—he was a megachurch preacher and didn’t know it. “Of the people, by the people, for the people.” It means that through our gathered generosity of presence and service and witness and giving, we can become great. We each get a vote in this community, in some form or fashion, and to the degree that we vote, we are vital and strong. It’s good old American enterprise: You get only as much as you put in. Vote with your time and energy, because without you, this community cannot be strong. Vote with your presence. Vote with your volunteerism. Vote with your financial generosity. Don’t be fooled by all the people you see, thinking that someone else will do it so you don’t have to. Don’t think that no one will miss your single vote, since there are so many others. American democracy can’t survive such apathy, since it inevitably builds and steamrolls; and we can’t survive it here, in our Unitarian Universalist spiritual democracy. “Of the people, by the people, for the people” means everyone involved in some way, everyone informed, because everyone has a vital stake in the outcome.

The building of our cathedral of the world never ends. It needs every one of us. But it is worth it. It is bold. It symbolizes a religion which essentially says: abundance. Abundance of choice, abundance of light, abundance of mystery, abundance of humanity, abundance of involvement and enterprise in building community. The challenge for us, ultimately, is this: how shall we live in this abundance? Will we allow it to change us? Will we let it sink it, transform us from within?

Though the foundation stones are ancient, still, Unitarian Universalism itself is only a baby faith, born with the formal consolidation of Unitarianism and Universalism in the 20th century, in 1961. A new thing came to life in that year, different from anything that had ever been before. And I believe that we live in a unique moment of time, where congregations like this one can make a huge impact on the shape of our movement and its future. We need to give ourselves to the abundance of this faith and let it inspire us, create out of it. Back in 1836, Emerson asked, “Why should not we also enjoy an original relation to the universe? […] There are new lands, new men, new thoughts. Let us demand our own works and laws and worship.” Why not? Why not, here at UUCA? Let us imagine our faith boldly, and then proclaim it boldly—this faith that the world needs.

Is America Coming Apart?

Flying home from London, where the subject of formal debate on the 70th anniversary of World War II had been whether Winston Churchill was a liability or asset to the Free World, one arrives in the middle of a far more acrimonious national debate right here in the United States.

At issue: Should Barack Obama be allowed to address tens of millions of American children, inside their classrooms, during school hours?

Conservative talk-show hosts saw a White House scheme to turn public schools into indoctrination centers where the socialist ideology of Obama would be spoon-fed to captive audiences of children forced to listen to Big Brother—and then do assignments on his sermon.

The liberal commentariat raged about right-wing paranoia.

Yet Byron York of The Washington Examiner dug back to 1991 to discover that, when George H.W. Bush went to Alice Deal Junior High to speak to America’s school kids, the left lost it. [When Bush spoke to students, Democrats investigated, held hearings, September 9, 2009]

“The White House turned a Northwest Washington junior high classroom into a television studio and its students into props,” railed The Washington Post. [TV Technique 101 With George Bush; Private Company Produces Coverage of D.C. School Visit, By John E. Yang and Lynda Richardson,  The Washington Post, October 2, 1991|]Education Secretary Lamar Alexander was called before a House committee. The National Education Association denounced Bush. And Congress ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate.

Obama’s actual speech proved about as controversial as a Nancy Reagan appeal to eighth-graders to “Just say no!” to drugs.

Yet, the episode reveals the poisoned character of our politics.

We saw it earlier on display in August, when the crowds that came out for town hall meetings to oppose Obama’s health care plans were called “thugs,” “fascists,” “racists” and “evil-mongers” by national Democrats.

We see it as Rep. Joe Wilson shouts, “You lie!” at the president during his address to a joint session of Congress.

We seem not only to disagree with each other more than ever, but to have come almost to detest one another. Politically, culturally, racially, we seem ever ready to go for each others’ throats.

One half of America sees abortion as the annual slaughter of a million unborn. The other half regards the right-to-life movement as tyrannical and sexist.

Proponents of gay marriage see its adversaries as homophobic bigots. Opponents see its champions as seeking to elevate unnatural and immoral relationships to the sacred state of traditional marriage.

The question invites itself. In what sense are we one nation and one people anymore? For what is a nation if not a people of a common ancestry, faith, culture and language, who worship the same God, revere the same heroes, cherish the same history, celebrate the same holidays, and share the same music, poetry, art and literature?

Yet, today, Mexican-Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a skirmish in a French-Mexican war about which most Americans know nothing, which took place the same year as two of the bloodiest battles of our own Civil War: Antietam and Fredericksburg.

Christmas and Easter, the great holidays of Christendom, once united Americans in joy. Now we fight over whether they should even be mentioned, let alone celebrated, in our public schools.

Where we used to have classical, pop, country & Western and jazz music, now we have varieties tailored to specific generations, races and ethnic groups. Even our music seems designed to subdivide us.

One part of America loves her history, another reviles it as racist, imperialist and genocidal. Old heroes like Columbus, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee are replaced by Dr. King and Cesar Chavez.

But the old holidays, heroes and icons endure, as the new have yet to put down roots in a recalcitrant Middle America.

We are not only more divided than ever on politics, faith and morality, but along the lines of class and ethnicity. Those who opposed Sonia Sotomayor for the Supreme Court and stood by Sgt. Crowley in the face-off with Harvard’s Henry Louis Gates were called racists. But this time they did not back down. They threw the same vile word right back in the face of their accusers, and Barack Obama.

Consider but a few issues on which Americans have lately been bitterly divided: school prayer, the Ten Commandments, evolution, the death penalty, abortion, homosexuality, assisted suicide, affirmative action, busing, the Confederate battle flag, the Duke rape case, Terri Schiavo, Iraq, amnesty, torture.

Now it is death panels, global warming, “birthers” and socialism. If a married couple disagreed as broadly and deeply as Americans do on such basic issues, they would have divorced and gone their separate ways long ago. What is it that still holds us together?

The European-Christian core of the country that once defined us is shrinking, as Christianity fades, the birth rate falls and Third World immigration surges. Globalism dissolves the economic bonds, while the cacophony of multiculturalism displaces the old American culture.

“E pluribus unum”—out of many, one—was the national motto the men of ‘76 settled upon. One sees the pluribus. But where is the unum? One sees the diversity. But where is the unity?

Is America, too, breaking up?

RB: Na rzeczonym albumie nagraliście cover Pestilence. Czy Praesepe planuje w najbliższym czasie zmierzyć się jeszcze z jakimś numerem innego zespołu?

A: Myślałem żeby ponownie nagrać “Rosemery’s Baby” (z dema “Pretentious Cycle” z 2002), czy jak to ująłeś zmierzyć się z “Shine On” Floydów. Mamy kilka dziwnych pomysłów, ale nie wiem czy ostatecznie dojdzie do ich realizacji.

RB: Klimat NGC 2632 potrafi momentami wzbudzić przerażenie… planowaliście taki album z domieszką horroru czy wyszło to raczej spontanicznie?

A: Chciałem, żeby płytka była raczej mroczna, nieprzewidywalna, ale i z dużym ładunkiem energii. Element horroru, przerażenia potęguje użycie fragmentów muzyki Jerrego Goldsmitha, czy też sampli z filmów. Uważam, że te fragmenty doskonale wpasowały się w nasze kawałki. Mogę jeszcze nadmienić, że jestem dużym fanem filmów z Obcym (R. Scotta, J. Camerona,, D. Finchera, J.P. Jeuneta) jak i twórczości pana R.H.Gigera, co pewno odcisnęło swoje piętno na naszej muzyce.

RB: Wiem już, że zespół nagrał nowy LP pt. E Pluribus Unum. Czy mógłbyś powiedzieć szerzej o tym materiale?

A: “E Pluribus Unum” został nagrany, zmiksowany i zmasterowany w bielskim studiu 213 przez Stanleya z NeWBReeD w połowie 2008. Część materiału, czyli gitary akustyczne i gościnne sola gitarowe, zostały zarejestrowane w Londynie przez dobrych znajomych Dominika i Sławka z Shed Studio. Jest to 5 kawałków, około 40 minut muzyki, nieco różniącej się od pierwszej płytki. Niestety materiał ten jest wciąż nieskończony z powodu braku wokalisty… Mam nadzieje, że do końca roku płyta będzie gotowa.

RB: Jak się sprawy mają z możliwością jego wydania w płytowej wersji?

A: W chwili obecnej, jest dość ciężko znaleźć godnego wydawcę, tym bardziej, że Praesepe to raczej projekt studyjny. Przypuszczam, że będę zmuszony spróbować samemu wypuścić ten krążek, być może ze współpracą jakiegoś distro, czy może undergroundowego zina. Tak, czy siak, po raz kolejny roześlę płytkę “gdziesięda”. Zobaczymy…

RB: Czy wraz z pojawieniem się w masowej świadomości E Pluribus Unum, planujecie jakieś koncerty?

A: No właśnie… i tu się pojawia problem. Osobiście bardzo chciałbym grać koncerty, ale sprawa się ma tak, że Marcin mieszka w Polsce, ja w tej chwili w Anglii i jakoś ciężko pogodzić życie zawodowe z graniem, szczególnie tak niszowej muzyki. Nie wykluczam jednak możliwości grania na żywo.

RB: Na koniec dwa pytania o trudności zespołu. Co decyduje, że Praesepe nie może normalnie wydać płytki z porządnym materiałem, podczas gdy rynek zalewa tak wiele słabej muzyki?

A: To jest bardzo dobre pytanie, ale chyba nie do mnie. W obecnych czasach trzeba być dobrym managerem, biznesmenem, mieć kontakty, wiedzieć gdzie uderzyć. Niestety ja chcę tylko grać i tworzyć muzę.

RB: Nie miewasz momentów zrezygnowania, że tak dużo Twojej (i zespołu) pracy mogą podziwiać tylko nieliczni?

A: Jasne, że mam, ale cóż zrobić? Póki, co, sprawia mi to dużą frajdę i nawet, jeśli istnieje tylko garstka odbiorców warto tworzyć dla nich.

Well, you learn something new every day.

In this case, that the unofficial motto of the U.S. — E Pluribus Unum — comes from either Virgil … or the late 18th-century version of Newsweek for the bewigged set.

At least, so claims a (fairly) reputable source:

E Pluribus Unum. — A Latin phrase meaning “Out of many, one,” or “One of many.” It alludes to the formation of one Federal Government out of several independent States. It is the motto of the United States, having been selected by a committee composed of John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. They made up their report on a design for a motto and great seal on Aug. 10, 1776. The phrase is probably derived from “Moretum,” a Latin poem by Virgil. It was also the motto of the Gentleman’s Magazine, which was quite popular in the Colonies at the time the selection was made. It first appeared on coin issued by New Jersey in 1786.

Needless to say, this is not mentioned in the Wikipedia entry.

So much for all the heavy drama about the deep meaning of the phrase, allusions to ancient republics, eh? Suck on that, Nicholas Cage. If this is right, the Benster, TJ, and Johnny A. ripped it off from the masthead of the magazine sitting in the privy. Pragmatic revolution, indeed.

Now, I don’t know much stock to put in this explanation — Richardson is the standard ref. work for primary texts, but not for interpretations, like this — and I don’t really care to kill an afternoon running it down (though if someone else were to…). But it appeals to my sense of the period. These guys were all about bricolage. I particularly like how it implies that they got their erudition second-hand (still provincials after all these years).

Anyhow, it’s still a good motto, no matter the source.

Welcome to part V in a series on Founding Fathers on Money. Today we examine the latin phrase E pluribus unum has appeared on U.S. coins since 1786.

But what does it mean?

E pluribus unum, or “Out of Many, One” was the unofficial motto of the United States until 1956 (when Congress formally adopted In God We Trust). It also appears on the Great Seal of the United States, as well as the official seals of the President, Vice President, Congress, House of Representatives, Senate, and Supreme Court.

The phrase was originally found in a poem by Virgil called Moretum.

Here it is in latin:

paulatim singula vires deperdunt proprias, color est e pluribus unus…

And in English:

Their proper powers, and out of many comes
A single colour, not entirely green

The Founding Fathers were strongly influenced by certain aspects of Roman thought (notably Cicero and Cato). So I thought it entirely possible that the phrase that appears on all U.S. currency as well as the country’s official seal could very well have originated from one of Rome’s greatest poets (that would be Virgil, again) until I discovered that the poem it came from is about cheese!

Dennis Prager is a friend of mine. I have only met him a few times (and he did say he remembered me) but I know him very well. He is happy. He is intelligent. He is goofy at times. He is very kind. Most of all he is one of the wisest and clear thinking people in America today. It’s a joy to listen to him on his national radio show, in television interviews or at a lecture as he clearly makes the case for the values and positions that I have held most of my life but have not had the eloquence and opportunity in expressing them that he does. First, Prager mentions ‘Inalienable’ Rights – when the Declaration of Independence actually declares ‘Unalienable’ Rights. Today, these terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle important difference which I wrote about before. This is a minor difference for sure, but I think it is still a useful one to understand.

Also, while some Atheists may take serious issue with value #2, I think there exist reasonable philosophical systems for non-God based values (such as Ayn Rand’s Objectivism) that may support the idea of ‘Unalienable’ Rights. I don’t have the time (or the desire, frankly) to write a thorough discussion on that topic here. At the very least we can say that, in America, it is the Atheist’s Unalienable Right not to believe in a God based system. That right is inherent and essential (incapable of being given up, or taken), and must be protected and defended in just the same way as, say, my own Christian belief system.

Other than that, I think Prager does a nice job outlaying some of the basic American values. Hopefully, his future videos will be as informative and positive as this.
