Simonetta (Metodi e tecniche delle interazioni educative, IUL) ha avuto l’idea di utilizzare il suo blog come una sorta di e-portfolio nel quel recuperare e fissare le tracce del percorso fatto nella IUL sino ad ora.

I got paired up with different people in my set for a group project in Business Communications class.  We were to present the Marketing Management: Entrepreneurship Option at BCIT to our class.  Our task was to convince our classmates to transfer into the Entrepreneurship Option after finishing first year.

In this project, I contributed to the introduction and closing of this presentation.  I also did all the designs on the Power-Point slides.  The photos used in there were not taken by me of course, see the last Power-Point slide – “References”.

This project was quickly thrown together between studying for midterms, it was desighned to showcase the tourism opton in the marketing program here at BCIT.

This session was changed at the last moment, again as a direct result of the previous sessions CIQ feedback. I had originally intended to cover evidence gathering, with specific focus on digital gathering e.g. hyperlinking, converting and embedding media etc… Reading the students responses over the last two sessions, it became evident that we needed to slow down and actually allow time for reflection to happen, especially during these introductory sessions. I can foresee this being a major problem in the future, knowing the content of the Production strand and the curriculum in which it’s embedded. There is simply not enough time for the students or staff to effectively reflect. As part of my 3 year PDP I intend to tackle this problem head on, perhaps using the Curriculum Reform process as a vehicle to solve this perennial issue. After all, there is little point in embedding reflection if there is no time in which to reflect. Last years cohort was a good example of how reflective practice was dropped as soon as the production throughput rolled into action. Out of a dozen or so keen reflective practitioners, only 3 now remain and they aren’t reflecting at the same consistent level as before.

The class was simple, without much planning required. I was in attendance as the students worked on their ePortfolio’s. We worked together, solving problems that they had come across between sessions. It was hoped by taking this approach, the slower members of the class would catch up with their peers. It was great to see the students helping each other and not always coming directly to me for advice, this seemed to enforce the belief that you should always plan your IT classes around one PC to 2 students, as it encourages collaborative learning. It is a method I witness every day when my two sons collaborate on a video game (the Lego Star Wars games in particular), they achieve much more when working together, though in the early days this wasn’t always the case! This approach allows frustrations to be shared and eventually dispelled through working the problem in a methodical manner, I believe that this is the same for young adults at varying levels of IT competency.

I opened up a Moodle chat room on the front page of the VLE, so students could go elsewhere and work if they feel that they needed a workstation of their own. They could then be in direct contact with me or their peers and in turn ask questions. It seemed to be a success, so I left the Chat room up on Moodle, to add an extra level of support to any student having problems with either Mahara and the VLE. I shall monitor this over the next few weeks to evaluate it’s effectiveness and my work load!

I finished the session with a final assignment for the students to complete, which was:

Pecha Kucha Assignment

“You have 6 minutes, 40 seconds and 20 slides and your time starts NOW!

It’s a game.

The rules are simple. Anybody can present but you’re allowed 20 images that you show for 20 seconds each giving you a total of 6 minutes and 40 seconds before the next presenter is up.You can’t spend 6:40 on one image/slide or 2:20 or any other denomination you can only spend 20 seconds on each image/slide. It’s all part of the fun and keeps presentations concise. If the facilitator decides then the presentation may be open for discussion with the audience otherwise it’s straight on to the next presenter.

Each presentation is pre-loaded onto a laptop (Powerpoint or Keynote) and then is ready to go. The facilitator will make a brief introduction of the presenter and then the talk begins. Each presentation must be configured to advance every 20 seconds, so it’s up to the speaker to keep pace with their slides.”

Pecha Kucha is a style of presentation with rules governing the focus, time and content. Your assignment is as follows:

For Wednesday 11th November in the Fyffe Lecture Hall.

Select an element (or elements) of your learning so far i.e. during Creative Beginnings and/or PP1a. You may decide to present all or some of the processes you have experienced so far. These may be a mixture of sessions you enjoyed, didn’t enjoy or were confused about.

Using your reflections so far, summarise your thoughts by selecting 20 still images (no text) that are relevant to your experiences. You should then prepare a script for your presentation giving 20 seconds to each slide.

During your presentation you may use your script (no need to memorise it!) and the slides will run in the background (with fixed timings), emphasising your words. The key to Pecha Kucha is to rehearse beforehand as 20 seconds can feel like 2 minutes. You will be presenting on your own with the remainder of the class as your audience.

Please research Pecha Kucha online to familiarise yourself with the concept.

The entire presentation should last 6 minutes and 40 seconds exactly.

Pecha Kucha helps you to; build self-confidence, focus on the content you are presenting, summarise data, present concise reflections, evidence your learning and build on public speaking skills.

Each session will be recorded for you to use on your ePortfolio.

I wanted to end these Introductory sessions with a completely non-IT method of reflection and a way in which the students could summarise their learning achievements and issues in as concise a way as possible (bearing in mind the size of the group). Pecha Kucha is an ideal vehicle to end, not just a series of sessions, but also a module.

Hello,

My name is Laura Thomason. I am currently enrolled in BCIT’s finacial management program.  I am planning on entering the accouting program and after completing my degree, getting my CA designation.  Please explore my e-portfolio, as well as my resume and learn more about me and my capabilites.

So far so good! i am really enjoying my time here at BCIT. The marketing management program is making a positive impression on me . it is a well organized and developed program that has much interaction with current industry. the classes are up to date and the skill set acquired is practical.

Simply put i cannot wait to see what next term has in store !

By the time i am done here @ BCIT i hope to have a broad skill set and long list of industry contacts and of course employment opportunities. i will continue to put forth the best of my abilities and learn more about what i can actually achieve everyday.

For the second case study in marketing 1102 my group had the responsbility of making a 20 min class presentation. We spent sevral hours prparing for this presentation. this case focused on price strategyies. this case involved much reasearch and extensive investigation into the wall covering industry (whom we were pricing a product for). This is the Team Charter that was created @the beginning of the year by my team. We worked together to include strict guide lines that encourage full participation by all members. Also outlined are the guidelines by which we will asses members of the group at the end of the term. This Charter was used throughout my first year. Mainly though Orgb Class dealt wit the preceding of such a charter.

This is my first real case study. As a group we were small numbered. In the marketing class in particular the functional number of members hovers around three. Disregarding this, We worked together as a team and completed the following Case study. This case study was based upon business models for Blackberry’s parent company of RIM to enter into the consumer smart phone marketplace.

This was a simple assignment we had to do as an introduction to Microsoft Excel. it does not dive deep into the topic but was meant as an introduction to help introduce some of the features of the program. As soon as its been graded i will post a more recent exec document that is a better representation of my skill level with regards to Microsoft Excel.

E-book popularity is on the rise. Once again as an assignment in Bsys 1000 of 1st year MKTG myself and two team members created this simple E-Book. It was more an exercise of Proper Reference etiquette and file conversion than any thing else. It showcases my strengths in Formatting,File conversion/pdf manipulation, proper referencing and copyright understanding.

This video was originally created for my Bsys1000 course tyaken during 1st year MKTG (marketing). It was a group exercise. as a team we worked well and put our heads together to come up with a minute long commercial style presentation to show the rest of the class why we chose to attend BCIT. (Dont mind the size or playback of the presentation its really just an example, at the current time proper video conversion software was absent. If requested i can provide a copy of the actual ppt file for review)

This Blog is a showcase of my works and accomplishments. For now, it mainly consists of projects and assignments I have created during my first year of the Marketing Management program @ BCIT. Some of these projects are individual and others team based. On a more personal level this blog also showcases many of my interests and hobbies etc. I intend to update this Blog as so its is recent and up to date.

As for my aspirations of the future you ask? It has been a longtime dream of mine to work for a large corporation. Since I was young i have been fascinated by the Disney company. I think for me it is the vast dimension of this company that makes it so appealing to me. Just being on Disney property or even watching a Disney film stirs up a little magic inside me. Its amazing how a company can provide you with that type of feeling. maybe its because i grew up with the classic Disney films or pinnochio,winnie the poo or even toystory, but ive come to realize that the imagineers over at Disney definitely know what they are doing. They created this magical feeling and hopefully one day i can be a part of it.

The allstar-Team D has done it again!  We got 96/100 on this pricing case study and we are all very proud of it.  High-fives all around…awesome work Team D!

Case Study 2 – Final Edition

I’m currently a student at BCIT’s Marketing Entrepreneurship program. My goal is to be an entrepreneur in internet marketing. I chose to be an entrepreneur so that I can help solve lots of people’s problems.

I also love to give back to the community, by doing this I am involved with a non-profit organization called SIFE. The two projects I am involved with is Stock Challenge and Lions Lair. Please visit my SIFE BCIT page for more information.

On the weekends, I work at Chevron as an assistant manager. Though I am not looking into retail, the experience that I have gotten from working at Chevron has definitely changed me as a person.

After school, I take dance classes to keep in shape and have fun at the same time. Last year I took Jazz, this year I wanted to take Jazz again, unfortunately the class didn’t work with my school schedule, so I took the challenge of learning Hiphop.

We had a project in our Business Systems Information class and it was nice having new teams made.  It had a refreshing feel to it.  My new teamates were Sveta and Stefanie, two very cool people and fun to work with.

In this project we were to learn and create a PDF file.  Ours is called “Facebook Across The Generations”.  I have not had the chance to talk to Sveta about getting the project file from her because it’s in her computer, but when I do, I will post it up so you can see it.  We were also told to upload it to www.Lulu.com to put it up for sale.  You can buy it for $1.25.

Facebook Across The Generations by Eremenko, Gajdecki and Heng without cover page

One of the lab assignments in my Business Systems Information classes was to learn how to use Microsoft Excel.  The last time I touched that program was in grade 8 – high school.  It was good getting back into it seeing as I will be using that program more often now that I will be needing it for my future projects and work.

The first class was very basic.  We made a 10×10 times-table and also a table for calculating cost, profit, tax, etc.  We learned about cells and how to add formulas into cells.  Also, how each cell can use the formula, so that the user doesn’t have to type all the units into every cell box.  Can’t wait to see what kind of magic this program can produce.  Awesome!
