Review for Motion Left Mopeds new pipe designed for the puch polini: REV-RUN

The setup:
Puch e50, fully case matched
stock reedcage and reeds
Polini 64cc kit, intake slightly ported, exhaust stock
15mm Bing carb
Puch Hero CDI from treats
3 shoe, paz springs
16×40 gearing
DMP unstuffed crank

The REV-RUN was taking the place of my trusty modified estoril. Before I swapped pipes, I gpsd the estoril at 50.0 mph.

With the REV-RUN I lost little, if any, low end. It hit shortly after the estoril did and produced a smooth, very quickly climbing power band that immediately started making more power than the estoril did. It continued to skyrocket to rpms I’d never hit before and GPSd at 54.5 mph.

With the extra power I tried re-gearing (the estoril couldnt pull taller gearing than 16×40) to 18×40. Low end was little worse, but nothing a little clutch tuning couldnt fix. Once the pipe hit (still pretty early) it pulled every bit as hard as it did with 16×40 gearing. It kept screaming all the way to a GPSd 57.6 mph.
I re-geared once more at 17×36 to shoot for 60. It didnt hit quite as high rpms, but was a little faster at 58.1 mph. Ive got some more gearing to try, a different cdi box and some porting to get this 15 bing to 60.

This pipe is sick, its got an insane power band, revs to the moon, and is super high quality hand made. Total game changer for the puch polini, and who knows what else. Devin said hes taking orders starting immediately.

devin brought down a bunch of prototype pipes this weekend. one of them was designed specifically for the puch polini cylinder and we used gary busey to test it. my current setup was a 15 bing, puch hero cdi, polini and modified dmp (estoril) pipe. it gps’d today at 50.0 mph. insert motion left’s brand new pipe and a slight re-gear and i got this…

this pipe is amazing. still have a couple more things i’m going to do to try and hit 60 on the 15 bing before i start playing with other carbs. 2 PETAL 4LYFE DAWG. i’ll do a more descriptive write up with photos after thanksgiving. not sure when these will go into full production, but i’d contact him (mlmopeds@hotmail.com) if you want one.

ok, first midterm done, so I’ve got some time. So yes, as stated the polini cup was awesome. I should have studied all weekend, but instead I went to atwater and tried to race.

Cuperteens broken race team: the story of the year. (Check out my rad c5 in the background. Thanks Colby!)

It was a tough morning. I got my bike all together last week and was basically hoping it would survive the races. I went out in qualifying and my bike was a turd. It wouldn’t rev through the pipe on the straight, so I was just cruising. I tried to make a few adjustments before twist and go qualifying, but it just got worse, with my bike even slower on the straight and the variator binding and making for horrid power. So after re-timing the bike, down jetting, replacing the rear pulley, switched back to a stock spring, changing the variator weights, and re-adjusting tire pressure it was time for the moped race.

I didn’t ride very well, I think I got 6th in the first moped race. I somehow managed to get out in front of everyone but tommy and jeff, but poor lines through the twisties quickly yielded lost spots to first jimmy, then elliot (on the e5, so sick!), then ultimately terry dean when I went super wide on the hairpin. I then proceded to suck even more, almost falling at least twice (2 wheel drifts!), the actually having a decent rematch vs. Latebird Nik. Unfortunately he fell on the last lap but was ok. I managed to get then 3rd or 4th in twist and go (tommy broke), but my bike was super janky.

I then proceeded to replace my shocks (tom lent everything to me, a real trooper after his crank twisted up saturday), but missed the dash for cash. I had WestCoast Ben (or Ben Jammin) ride his sick derbi, but it was a bit out of tune. Terry Dean ripped it up out there and won like $120. So awesome!

I got back out there for moped 2, but on after the 1st lap I had some crazy vibrations and turns out my crank twisted just like tom’s. Bummer! I guess this was the 10th crank i’ve destroyed, dunno. So someone had to get out there for twist and go, and luckily the mosquito bus brought mr. travis and his rad hobbit, so he put on the boots and ripped it up out there, getting 4th in the most entertaining race ever (with tommy on the jog).

So yea, racing was awesome. Jeff managed to hang on to the win in mopeds, with elliot on the e5 just narrowly behind (with another lap or 2, who knows!). He took home the metro rider for 1st overall on the season. Jeff was second and got a rad helmet, which he earned after nearly knocking himself out in the dash for cash, and tommy rounded up the podium in 3rd.

The puch polini racing was also epic. The first race had Round, Jimmy and Alan all neck and neck right up to the last lap. Alan managed to pass jimmy on the last turn of the last lap and took it home. The 2nd race was slightly less intense because alan fell, but still awesome with jimmy and round battling hard. I’m super excited about this class next season.

Somehow I managed to get 3rd overall in twist and go for the season, so I won a big box full of oil and cleaners, some posters, and a sweet key chain! Tommy got 2nd and got some rad racing slicks for his pitbike! (he has one, right?) Mr. Scooter Rumple got 1st. We will get him next year.

Ok, so thats it. The Polini Cup was rad. Polini USA did an amazing job all year making this happen. Big thanks to them, 1977Mopeds, and everyone else who made racing this year a reality. Atwater has been great, and I’m super stoked about next season. More parties (that bus better be back down), more racing, and more fun overall. I’ll post some pictures of my new builds as they happen over the winter.

my last minute effort for a racing maxi to race in the puch polini E50 class this weekend in atwater. polini cup final race of the season. lots of people will be there from all over. i will be there. race or no race for me. i have some time tonight. i have some time tomorrow. maybe maybe, we will see. and the bravo too? not sure. questions with no answers. im more excited about racing a maxi than anything else right now.

stock two shoe plate with super clutch arms. destroyed. this was a first pressing super clutch, check the date, it’s 08. our fresh 09 new ones have better lining now.

it’s always the way E50 clutches are when you’re going faster than stock. they break. eventually, no matter how you make em. it’s one thing you will always have to replace over time.

new version is a two shoe plate with kick start arms. it’s been working good for a while now. i have this set up on the ltd. it’s got a polini with a malossi 4 petal and a phbg. it’s a little bit fast. it’s ok. i like the two shoe better than the three. it’s my preference. i know how to tune a two shoe for what i want. i use stock springs, tightened up a bit. i want some spin out before it grabs, but not too much. i set it for even less spin out when i had a gilardoni. a clutch brace might have saved this clutch. perhaps. two bad no one makes a two shoe clutch brace. in theory a three shoe is a better clutch, but in my experience a two shoe does what i want it to and fails me less.

Piston and ring gone, no damage to the cylinder

Ritto crankshaft . . . 3 years of high rpm polini e50 carnage ! Are the needle bearings supposed to be at that angle ? Answer = NO This is the cause of damage to said piston above

things have been going pretty well. the magnum did well in sacramento and i’ve been riding it to work and around seattle every day.

this weekend i’m going to just go over the whole bike and make sure everything is solid. i need to go over the cylinder as there’s a minor airleak somewhere. the clutch needs to be tuned a little bit too – i see some paz clutch springs in my future. planning on a bigger carb at some point, once i sell a few more paintings. sounds like naz is going to modify my exhaust pipe for me and shorten the header and take out a built-in restriction.

last night after grabbing some pedals and crank pins from Harvy’s bikes up in Lynnwood, Naz came over and put together a temporary makeshift exhaust mount since there’s a large misalignment from the mounting bracket on the bike verses the mounting bracket on the exhaust. then, after getting the crank arms, pedals, pedal chain on, Naz hacksawing off the rear fender tab underneath the seat so that i can run the 280mm heavy duty shocks, makin a quick killwire, filling up the transmission fluid and getting a gallon of gas and premix –

the magnum officially runs. now for lots of tuning, though it sounds like a larger phbg carb may be in my future instead of the current 16 SHA.

a few things have happened and i haven’t been posting.  i just got back from brodeo (which was AMAZING) so this is going to be quick.

- i tried installing the za50 cdi benji sells on my derbi. i followed cuperzack’s blog post on how to install it and had no luck. finally, after flipping the pickup back to the stock position i got it running. i had to dremel out the slots a lot and drill a new hole. it still didn’t run great after that, so i bought a new condenser and switched back to points. the motoplat ignition systems derbi’s come with are really great and should serve me fine.

- i fixed the clutch sticking issue i was having on my e50. turns out the clutch posts had slightly bent outward causing the arms to extend pass the plate and slightly grab the clutch bell….

a few seconds with the angle grinder = fixed!

the amount of slip i have (synthetic oil and torqued down paz springs) makes this clutch wear out reasonably quick. i’m pretty happy with the 900+ miles i have on it so far.

- i caved in and got the 65cc pyramid reed metra kit and 75cc zen pipe for my derbi. going to pair that with either the 15 sha i have on there now, or move to a 19 phbg.  a few things i have to work out before that gets totally done are some frame mods, new forks, and maybe a disc brake.  for your health!
