BMW’s M division has kicked off development of the fifth-generation M5, 25 years after the first model went on sale in the UK.

The new performance saloon, known internally under the codename F10M and due to make its first public appearance at the Frankfurt motor show in 2011, is set to mark a major departure from its predecessors by adopting turbocharging for the first time.

The decision is part of the drive to cut fuel consumption, a key element of BMW’s Efficient Dynamics programme. M division’s head of development, Albert Biermann, said the new driveline will also receive taller gearing, helping to cut CO2 emissions by 20 per cent, from 344g/km to around 275g/km.

“We’ve been forced to switch to an engine offering greater low-end torque than the naturally aspirated engine to ensure it can cope with the longer axle ratio,” Biermann said. “It’s the only real way we can balance achieving the environmental improvements we want while retaining similar levels of performance to today’s car.”

The engine’s output remains secret. But with the same unit pumping out 555bhp in the X5 and X6 M, the new car should stick to the M5 tradition of being more powerful than the car it replaces.

The most noticeable difference will be the way the new engine delivers its power. The V10’s 500bhp comes at 7750rpm, but the V8’s peak power should arrive at not much more than 6000rpm.

More than outright power, though, it is the added torque that is likely to bring the biggest change in character. Biermann indicated there will be a 30 per cent increase, taking torque from today’s 383lb ft at 6100rpm to somewhere around 500lb ft at little more than 1500rpm. Biermann is also confident the V8’s unique induction system will provide similar levels of throttle response to today’s model.

The early prototype pictured here is one of 10 road-going mules for the new M5. It is being used to test the cooling provided by a new front end. “The development process is at an early stage. We’re concentrating on the durability and cooling of the driveline at the moment,” said Biermann.

The V8 means the M5 will require additional cooling capacity for the intercooler as well as a means of extracting hot air created by the turbochargers.

Along with the new engine, the car will also get a new gearbox, a beefed-up version of the M3’s seven-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission), as previewed on the 25th anniversary version of the M5 unveiled last week.

Although BMW has just introduced a new petrol-electric hybrid system on its new Active Hybrid 7, it has not been considered for the M5 due to the 100kg it adds to the car’s weight.

Weight saving is playing a big part in the M5’s development, with carbonfibre being used in the bodyshell. BMW is working on a carbonfibre roof and bootlid, mainly because, being sited on top of the car, they are less vulnerable to impact damage.

At the same time, a lot of effort is going into honing the aerodynamics at BMW’s new wind tunnel in Munich. The car will get Active Aerodynamics, which blanks off parts of the grille and cooling intakes during warm-up and under light throttle load.

The new M5 will continue the car’s tradition of visual understatement with a muscular appearance. LED lighting will be used to enhance the look and differentiate the M5 from the standard 5-series, a new generation of which is due early next year.

Underneath, there will be new double wishbone front suspension in place of the MacPherson strut set-up that has been a mainstay of the M5. It will be combined with multi-link rear suspension.

As with today’s model, active dampers will be used to provide the driver with the choice of differing levels of ride comfort. They will be part of a new chassis system that also includes reworked traction and stability management.

The M5 will also get new, fully electric power steering, described by Biermann as a third-generation system that offers similar levels of response and feedback to today’s hydraulic set-up.

A more efficient version of BMW M3 won’t be named CSL, but GT4 Street or GT. The debut will be taken in 2010 and will cost around 110,000 euros. Some additional information about GT4BMW M3 emerged on the Internet. In the first phase, the new M3 GT will be available only in tone Inka Orange, as a tribute to the first sports models from BMW. Por mis manos han pasado 2 modelos Nokia con sistema operativo Symbian S60, la experiencia ha sido del todo grata, a pesar de las duras críticas que ha recibido dicho sistema operativo debido principalmente a su “obsoleta” interfaz. Nada más falso que lo anterior. Hay personas que se quedaron con la idea del viejo Symbian tosco y pesado, de interfaz poca amigable, siendo que han pasado años de trabajo y desarrollo por parte de Nokia (quien no olvidemos se hizo de Symbian por unos 264 millones de euros), y que lo han ido puliendo poco a poco, en todos sentidos. Si bien es cierto que no cuenta con la interfaz más espectacular del mercado, tampoco es cierto que sea cutre e inusable como dicen algunos. Además, tras la compra de Symbian, Nokia creo la Fundación Symbian, con el fin de encaminar al sistema operativo hacia un desarrollo libre y sin ánimos de lucro (como lo esta haciendo, y de buena forma, Google con su Android).

Mi primer teléfono con Symbian fue el Nokia E65, de diseño increíblemente sexy para ser un teléfono dirigido a un publico ejecutivo (como todos los de la serie E), con un teclado deslizante, algunos acabados en símil metal, y una parte trasera imitación piel, que era una delicia el solo sujetarlo en la mano. De especificaciones no anda para nada corto, incluye receptor Wi-Fi, 3G y el obligado Bluetooth, es cuatribanda para su uso en cualquier parte del mundo, cuenta con una pantalla súper nítida compatible con hasta 16 millones de colores, cámara de fotos discreta de 2 megapíxeles y grabación de video, y las ventajas de Symbian en cuanto a instalación de un sin fin de aplicaciones que hacen de este un telefonazo.

Desde emuladores de consolas de videojuegos antiguas, reproductores de música y video avanzados, visores de documentos, correo electrónico, navegación Web como en el escritorio de la PC, mensajería instantánea, juegos, incluso una aplicación para usarse como control remoto de la TV (gracias a su sensor infrarrojo), hacen de Symbian uno de los sistemas móviles mas avanzados del mercado, llevándose entre los pies al iPhone y sus aplicaciones pedorras.

El otro teléfono que tuve la oportunidad de usar durante un largo tiempo fue el Nokia 6120 Classic, que incluye Symbian S60 3ª Edición, Feature Pack 1, una versión más nueva que la del E65 (S60 3ª Edición). De características parecidas al E65, a excepción del recetor Wi-Fi, el Nokia 6120 Classic es una de las opciones mas económicas para tener un teléfono con Symbian; mientras que el Nokia E65 me salio en $4600 pesos mexicanos, el 6120 me salio como a $2500, una verdadera ganga si ponemos este teléfono frente a esos Sony Ericsson y Motorola que hay en el mercado que valen $5000 pesos y solo sirven para llamar y escuchar música.

Ahora estoy usando un teléfono de gama media-baja de Nokia, pero ya estoy planeando hacerme de nuevo de un teléfono con Symbian o quizá, esperar a que desembarque en México el Nokia N900 con su sistema operativo basado en Linux, Maemo (uff, se me hace agua la boca).

Nokia E65 review: Business beauty

The Nokia E65 was announced at last month’s 3GSM conference in Barcelona, alongside its fellow Eseries devices the E90 and E61i. Together with the news avalanche that goes with 3GSM, this means that this compact and attractive handset probably has not received the attention it deserves.

The E65 is a ’slider’ and, with dimensions of 105×49x15.5 mm and a volume of just 74cc, is one the smallest S60 devices announced thus far. The styling and design of the device add to this feeling; with rounded edges and soft materials, the E65 feels (subjectively) small in the hand. This is often more important than the actual physical dimensions of a device. The E65 is as small, if not smaller, than many of the standard feature phones that it might be competing against. It also compares favourably with the E60, which was a good device but was a little larger than many standard phones.

The E65 is an attractive smartphone and shows a lot more style that the first generation of Eseries devices (the boxy E60 springs to mind). The front is a mixture of a rubbery-feeling plastic (on the sides) and a plastic housing (on the front) for the screen and control keys. The back features leather-like material (battery cover) and the same rubbery plastic from the front (camera housing). These materials add up to a phone that is easy to grip and which feels comfortable to hold.

The slider mechanism is very solid and there is a nice clunk as you slide it up or down; it is a definite improvement over other Nokia smartphone sliders such as the N80 or N95. The keypad surround and slider runners are metallic, with the keys themselves made from a hard plastic. They keys are of fair size and although they look a little (horizontally) cramped they initially perform well thanks to a combination of ridges in each row of keys and to the generous vertical height of each key. It should be possible to achieve good text entry speeds using predictive text. The device is weighted such that most of the mass is in the lower half of the slide, and as a result there are no problems using the keypad, as can be the case in other sliders.

On the right hand side of the device are four keys; the record key (voice notes and voice commands), the pencil key and volume up and down keys. These have been well positioned and should suit both left and right-handers. The E65 uses a Pop-port, located at the bottom of the device; I would have preferred to see a mini-USB port, but the necessary (mono) headset and PC cable will be provided in the box so the majority of business users will be not be too concerned.

The control keys are clustered beneath the QVGA screen, smaller than on many other S60 3rd Edition devices (56mm diagonal compared to 62mm on the N73 and 67mm on the N95) but larger than screens on comparable feature phones. Thus on-screen writing and icons can be a little small; it is a shame that the scalable font options found in Feature Pack 1 of S60 3rd Edition are not present here. The usual navigator key and control keys are present, but they are joined by four ‘one touch’ keys (Conference, Contacts, My Own and Mute) for accessing common functions. The navigator key is excellent for general use, though may not be ideal for games. A central button provides selection, while the surrounding ring provides directions. The function, calling, cancel and S60 menu keys are a little small, but a raised outer edge prevents most mis-keys.

The one touch Conference key allows you to easily initiate conference calls. This is done either by using a default (configurable) number such as a regular conference calling number and includes support for sending additional key tones (e.g. sending the ID of a call to the conference calling service), or by selecting the members of a conference call from the contacts database. The second of these modes will require support from the network operator - in some cases this may be enabled automatically, while in others it may be an extra service and you may also be limited in what type of numbers you can call. I imagine many people working in Enterprise environments will have a single conference calling service that they use on a regular basis for team meetings or similar events – it is exactly this type of person that the one touch conference key is aimed at.

The Contacts one touch key will open the Contacts application, of course, and on a second press will act like a ‘back’ key, returning the user to the previous application or location in the phone UI. The My Own key can be set to start the application of your choice, while the Mute key will mute the phone’s microphone during any call. This facility is particularly relevant to conference calls, where muting your microphone helps reduce the background noise which can blight conference calls with multiple participants. When the mute key is used, a large mute icon is displayed on the screen. The one touch keys can apparently be changed at the request of large enterprises and operators. There are likely to be E65 variants that replace the My Own key with either an operator shortcut key or a shortcut key to corporate PBX or VoIP systems.

The extra buttons are one of the key propositions of the E65 and, together with the small size and number keypad, indicate that the device is firmly ’voice centric’.

The E65 has good connectivity options, with quad-band EGSM, WCDMA (3G), WiFi, USB 2.0, IrDA and Bluetooth 1.2 all supported. However, there is no front facing camera for video calls, so the WCDMA connectivity’s main use will be for data.

Thanks to the inclusion of WiFi, the E65 is also a very capable VoIP device. It includes the second version of Nokia’s SIP stack, which has better support for NAT transversal and therefore supports a greater range of SIP services. The Internet telephony application is also present, which allows you to manage multiple SIP services and set VoIP as the default call type when a SIP service is successfully registered. In practice, this means that, once set up, you can forget about the VoIP functionality – the phone will automatically use it when you make calls if it is able to do so.

The Nokia E65 runs S60 3rd Edition, with the usual array of applications. Multimedia is covered by Real Player, Music Player, the Camera application and Gallery. The E65 is initially shipping with the older versions of these applications, which is a shame, especially in the case of the Music Player. More irritating is the inclusion of the HS-5 Pop-port headset in the sales package, this is a mono only; a stereo headset would enable more users to get more out of the phone out of the box.

The quality of the images from the 2 megapixel camera is quite acceptable, but nothing special. There is no Flash LED, macro mode or auto focus, which limits the conditions in which the camera can be used. However, it should still be good enough for quick snapshots, and the start up and capture time is good. A few sample images are shown below.

Messaging is a key selling point of the Eseries range of devices and the E65 is no exception. The phone supports push email services from Nokia (Intellisync), Microsoft (Exchange), Blackberry (Blackberry Connect), Good (Mobile Messaging) Visto, and more. Clearly, with the absence of a QWERTY keyboard the E65 becomes more of a read only email device, although short replies are possible using the number keypad. Mobile email in general has been taken up by only a minority of enterprise users - there are a great number who might benefit from always-on access to email and who only need read access. A device such as the E65 is ideal for this type of user.

Outside of Multimedia and Messaging, there is an impressive suite of accompanying software, ranging from the standard PIM applications to viewers for Word, Excel, PowerPoint (Quickoffice) and PDF (Adobe) documents, as well as a Zip Manager (Epocware) and the Search, Teams and WiFi (wizard) utilities which are now standard on Eseries devices. Many of the newer features of S60 have also been called on to round off the package, these include the Message reader application (reads text messages aloud), Voice Control (which can be accessed by holding down the record button on the side of the device and includes speaker independent voice recognition for all stored contacts) and the Welcome applications (Settings Wizard, Transfer and Tutorial).

The E65 may not have the glamour of the E90 or the popularity of the E61i, but it should not be underestimated and I think it is the dark horse of the Eseries range. It is a reasonably well specified, but competitively priced enterprise focused device, which is ideal for office workers looking for strong voice features and a read only mobile email solution. It makes a compelling addition to the overall Eseries portfolio, slotting in between the E60 and the E50.  Outside of the enterprise focus, the multimedia features are mediocre in comparison to Nseries phones, but they’re still better than much of the competition. Thus the E65 may also appeal to general consumers as its size and design will attract those looking for a little extra from their day to day phone.

The E65 is available in red and mocha (brown), is available immediately and costs approximately 370 Euros unsubsidised.

The Nokia E75 was announced at Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona  as you may or may not know  the nokia e75 is nokia’s latest flagship business device, it comes as a replacement for the ever popularly nokia e71, the e75 is also the first Eseries side-slider with a full QWERTY keyboard.

but before I get more into this review i will like to thank Nokia WomWorld for sending us this device to review,  now on with the review,

Besides being the first Eseries side-slider the e75 is also the first Eseries with S60 V3 Feature Pack 2 under the hood, with FP2 comes a number of new features with a few advantages and a few disadvantages as well, lets start from the out side and go in.

Built Quality & Design*

Stray out of the box i was immediately let down by a very shaky  slider, the spring that controls the slider is just a little too weak, in-fact when the phone is closed and you’re using the alphanumeric keypad on the front you can still feel the slider shaking below,  also when the slider is open it’s hard to use the  navigation keys, this was not a big problem for me but it can be for people with small hands, However  the e75 stays true to the eseries name with amazing built quality, it’s not thick or that heavy and it doesn’t feel cheap or flimsy,  its just thin and it has a nice heft to it, and just like all the other Eseries phones, it fells like a indestructible tank in the hands, it’s not as good as the e71 but that’s okay.

I also really like the side-sliding form factor of the nokia e75, i was truly amazed that nokia fit a full QWERTY keyboard in such a small and sexy phone.

Screen, keypad & keyboard*

On the front of the e75 theirs a 2.4 inch screen which takes up more then half  the phone, and this is a good thing because the nice big screen is ideal for gaming and web browsing but right below the screen their are 25 small and cramped keys, in addition to being too small, the keys are made form plastic, and it feels really cheap and flimsy, the d-pad is really stiff and it gives little to no feedback at all.

Lucky the four-row slide out QWERTY keyboard saves the day, with 39 large well lay-ed out keys which are very easy to use, ideal for writing  a email or texting , it’s also very comfortable and theirs a nice soft touch feel to the keys and the chrome-frame around the keyboard is a nice touch.

The slide out keyboard is also very customizable, with a feature called “slide handling” this feature allows you to pick an application that launch when you slide open the phone or return to home-screen when closed.

Camera*

if i had one word to descried the camera on the e75 it world be “unbelievable”, i was truly amazed by the  3.2 MP camera on the e75, “why??  you asks, just look at the pics below,

“not bad for a business device”, as you can see the 3.2MP camera on the e75 is just as good and some times better then the 5MP camera on the n95, and video is just as good.

FP2 also brings the same camera interface that you’ll find on the n85 or the n95, i also found that the  e75 focused a lot fast than the n95 , the LED flash could be better but it’s okay.

View street level imagery of addresses, businesses, and turns in directions in much of the US, Australia, Japan, and parts of Europe.

The Nokia e65 was  announced back in February 2007, with features like Wi-Fi with a dedicated scanner,VoIP over Wi-Fi,a 2 megapixel camera and search option for the entire phone content  (just too name a few), i know that this doesn’t  seen like much, but back in 2007 it was more then enough for thousands of people like me.

it has been 3 years sines i had nokia e65 and i just wanted to show you “how it looks like after 3 years heavy uses”
