If you’re going to have a small Toyota meet, you might as well do it in the middle of a hurricane. The weather was intense, huge winds and damn cold but with Paul down from Calgary, we had to roll out.

Warren was out in his 86, White, stripped and now rolling on some new 14 x 7 diamonds. Jeff was doing his best impression of a hovercraft, floating just barely off the pavement.

His cressy is soon to be rocking a 5-spd, watch out for him on the track.

Chris looked daper in his Tercel…ahem…Starlet, considering the ridiculous care and attention to detail that went into his Rolla build, I expect big things from this car. Lastly, Brett showed up in an e70 that makes mine look like a Veyron pulled from the bottom of a marsh. Well, more so than usual.

Paul was playing practicality with the pickup truck he drove from Alberta, not exciting at all with the exception of a)Paul was in it b) Free clutch is free. Thanks Paul.

We finally ran for shelter in the nearest beer house, then the second nearest, then we made new plans and tried to head on our way. Of course no old school Toyota meet would be complete without car troubles.

Finally we all settled in to a nice warm beer? Enjoyed a nice cold restaurant? There was beer and food.

Jeff and Warren aren’t pictured since they were closest to me and I’m a lazy photgrapher.

Chris is intrigued by Paul’s theories and would like to subscribe to his newsletter.

Warren lays down a profound truth and Paul’s face promptly melts.

Jeff loves drift saloons, Chris is amused.

It was a great, lazy, cold night and a good time was had by most. Well, by me anyway. Now, just because people love huge wordy posts that don’t really say anything. Let’s continue.

I’m just kidding. Here’s a gratuitous shot of my car, the little bit of JDMness is to hide the lack of progress. “Now when people look they’ll say “that guy must be legit. I’m working on it, I swear.

Not my words (I wish) but the words of the Chief of the HSE Prof. Brendan Drumm. On an article by Ai

Not my words (I wish) but the words of the Chief of the HSE Prof. Brendan Drumm. On an article by Ailish O’ Regan on the Irish Independent, Regan reveals to us that Mr. Drumm has refused to comment on his bonus of €70,000.

Currently Mr. Drumm is earning a salary of over €400,000. So while our health care system is falling to that of a standard of a third world country (and yes it is my friends and don’t tell me other wise) we have the Chief Director earning €400,000 plus. There are questions that do need to be asked. Nurses are being let go from work due to cut backs. Newly qualified nurses and health care professionals have been forced to pack their bags and move to the UK, Middle East, US and Australia against their own will. Some nurses I have spoken to have moved to countries like the UK and Australia and have left their husbands here in Ireland so “they can pay the bills”.

Services have been closed down also. It angered me to read in the Irish Times yesterday that the states main secure unit for highly disruptive children based in Ballydowd in West Dublin will be closed down. The 12 children will be sent to another unit based in the North of the City. After the release of a report from HIQA it was decided that this facility will no longer suit its purpose. This facility was built 9 years ago to the tune of €13million. It now has been deemed unsuitable and the children should be moved to a newer facility? This is bamboozling to the mind as one would think we could invest a few thousand euro and make the changes but no we will close the facility down and waste the money we invested.

That is just a little example of what is wrong I am only starting on this issue but if I was to take two examples as the two I have taken above and put them up on my blog every day for the next year we might have a little think about how effective the HSE is actually running and see if Mr. Drumm does deserve a total of €400,000.

As a saying goes “There are no problems- just solutions waiting to be found”

Skyfire tak meninggalkan cache, sehingga tak membuat kecepatan ponsel melamban.

I have quite a few parts to source and afford before Zombi will be road worthy but I thought I would get a start on things. When I got home from the Coast Drift event at Western Speedway (post to come) I decided to see how many disgusting fluids I could expose myself to inside the slag.

A Pentax versenytársai mégis több lehetőséget kínálnak ilyen kategóriában némileg olcsóbban/drágábban is, például nagyobb zoomot, jobb képminőséget esetleg manuális vezérlést.

Prince Of Persia HD membawa kesenangan tersendiri untuk permainan ponsel.

The Corolla E70 was the fourth generation of cars sold by Toyota under the Corolla nameplate.

The fourth-generation model released in 1979 in Japan, was boxy and was the last generation to have the entire lineup in rear-wheel-drive. Although most of the fourth generation was replaced by 1984, the station wagon and van versions were offered into 1987. In 1980 Corolla daily production reached an all-time high, averaging 2,346 units.

This generation (apart from the wagon) got a new rear coil spring five-link rear end with a panhard rod, and the wheelbase was longer at 94.5 in (2400 mm). A new underwhelming 1.8 L (1770 cc/108 in³) 3T engine was optional to some markets, while parts of the world retained the old 4K. The most notable engine advancement came in 1983, however, as Toyota began offering the 1.6 L (1587 cc/96 in³) 4A-C. The aluminum head, SOHC engine, although bulkier in size and weight than the K and T engines it was offered alongside, was a grand step up in performance. This would be the last generation of Corollas to use any pushrod or iron cylinder head engines, as Toyota made the decision to focus exclusively on aluminium head, OHC engine design from this point forward. This was the first generation to have power steering. In the USDM market, this was introduced in the 1982 model year.

Various facelifts were made during production. In 1979-80, a 4-round headlamp setup was used in most markets. A restyle for 1981 involved two rectangular headlamps. A more extensive facelift was given for 1982, involving wraparound headlights, remodeled taillights and new bumpers, which on some models were rubber moulded.

Design work was started in 1974 by Fumio Agetsuma. The goals he told his team were :

Quiet cars will have a definite edge. Conservation of both resources and fuel will be very important. Economy and value will also carry considerable weight.

Our new Corolla must be as aerodynamically perfect as the parameters allow. It must be comfortable, with enough interior room to move about in. It will need all the modern features that future customers will want as well.

Corolla must change. But we should never destroy the popular base upon which Corolla sales are built. Our new car must reflect the wishes of the consumer, the ordinary people who drive Corollas.

There should be no generation gap with Corolla. It should appeal to young and old alike. Corolla must also transcend national boundaries. It must perform as well in sub-zero temperatures as it does in the tropics or in the heat of the deserts of the world. Above all, Corolla must be a car that pleases.

Corolla has an illustrious tradition. Now, let us build our new Corolla on that tradition, the kind of new Corolla we know the drivers of the world will expect.

Nokia E70 review: Folding typewriter

Nokia has released another handset based on the 3rd edition of Series 60 user interface. This phone runs on Symbian 9.1 as the other new smartphones from the Finnish manufacturer. With its interesting design solutions and great features, it surely aims for lots of fans and will be a huge success. With its 2 megapixel camera, folding QWERTY keyboard and great connectivity features like WiFi, Nokia E70 is more than just a business phone; it is a dream phone.

Official photos: Nokia E-series, Nokia E70 in black

Main features:

Great display

QWERTY keyboard

75 MB internal memory + miniSD memory card slot

3G connectivity

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth, Infrared, USB

2 megapixel camera

Very good videos with smooth digital zoom

Blackberry connectivity

Great battery

Main disadvantages:

Rather heavy

Controversial looks when closed

Slow display orientation change

Nokia E70 inherits the looks of Nokia 6810, 6820 and 6822. This series of phones are gradually improving in time and E70 is the first one with smartphone capabilities. The phone’s features remind of the E60 model but the difference is that this one has a camera, more internal memory and different card type in use. This is the only phone from the E series of Nokia which features a camera. The QWERTY keyboard of E70 may seem as an answer to the rival manufacturer’s models on the market which offer QWERTY handsets but E70 form factor is a Nokia brand.

Nokia E70

A perfect gamepad

When closed, the phone doesn’t look good at all. It leaves an impression of something cheap and looks more like a dummy toy than a great smartphone. The front view fails to impress because of the “shoulders” of the keyboard. The back is so blank that it scares. But the magic begins when the phone is opened and it reveals its true potential. The keypad is greatly elaborated in silver and the soft touch adds even more joy of use. The display stands firmly in the middle of the separated keyboard and provides maximum visibility for such (relatively) small device.

Nokia E70 held in hand

Nokia E70 measures 117 x 53 x 22 mm and is rather bulky when held closed in hand. When you open it, you must operate it with both hands, of course, but the phone allows you to use its features so easily, it even brings delight of work.

Held in hand when opened

Multiple keypads

Even though E70 is made of plastic, it doesn’t creak or feel cheap. It is solid (probably because of the 127 g it weighs) and creates impressions of a massive tool. When opened, this first impression vanishes mysteriously. The two-hand grip is confusing in the first time, especially as you may be scared not to break the keyboard part. Not to worry, the Nokia people have undoubtedly considered this and have manufactured it very well.

Using the phone with both hands

The keyboard part opens with a swivel motion going to the other side of the phone, revealing the right part of the keyboard beneath the numeric keypad. You will be offered a fully functional QWERTY keyboard when you finish the opening process.

The ugly duckling becomes a beautiful swan

When the phone is closed, Nokia E70’s front panel features the main speaker, surrounded by a light indicator and the Turn On/Off Profiles button, on the very top of the phone. Just below it is the great 2-inch (35 x 41 mm) high-resolution TFT display, capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. The display has a black frame all over with very slim borders and a bit larger black banner on its top with the sign NOKIA on it. Below the display there are the two functional keys and the navigation joystick. The keys are in matt grey as the joystick is in shiny silver.

Nokia E70 front view • the main speaker, On/Off button, light indicator and display • numeric keypad

The numeric keypad is located on the swivel part of the phone. The keypad structure is typical for Nokia smartphones with the red and green receivers on top and the Pencil, Menu and correction C buttons just under them. The other keys are situated beneath them. They are all made of nice soft rubbery plastic and provide very pleasant touch. When the handset is opened, the marking job of the Pencil key is replaced by the combination of Shift and the Arrow keys on the QWERTY keyboard – much like on a computer.

The phone’s back is very clean. So clean, that it even looks poor. On the top left side you will find the loudspeaker grill, fighting for attention together with the camera lens and NOKIA sign. The camera lens is put in a silver frame with a protecting glass. The battery cover uses more than half of the back part of the phone. It ends with the release button which is more than easy to use.

Nokia E70 back view • camera lens

When you remove the battery cover you will see the BL-6C Li-Ion 1150 mAh battery which should provide the user with up to 220 hours of stand-by and up to 7 hours and 20 minutes of talk time, according to Nokia. On the right side of the battery is the miniSD memory card slot which allows hot swap functionality. The SIM card is accessed easily when you remove the battery. You should just push toward you or the opposite way in order to insert or remove your card.

Under the battery cover • the miniSD memory card slot • under the battery

The left side of the phone accommodates the Sound recorder button and the opening mechanism of the keyboard. The right side holds the other side of the opening mechanism plus the Infrared port. The phone’s bottom is reserved for the Pop-Port and the charger port. The top of the closed Nokia E70 is absolutely blank which is understandable as when you open the phone, its top gets covered with the keyboard.

The opening mechanism of the phone is very simple; you grab the numeric keypad and turn it towards the display, rotate until it clicks ready and voila.

Nokia E70 battery connector type is the older, bigger one. The battery works great as it made it through the testing period with only one charging and that’s impressive, having in mind the aggressive work with the phone.

Obsessively fine

Nokia E70 has a very good keypad (numeric) but there is no point in talking about it when the phone offers such a fantastic QWERTY keyboard, right? Anyway, to summarize in one sentence, the numeric keypad is very well elaborated and will suit you fine, just like any good mobile phone keypad.

The QWERTY keyboard is even better. The buttons are made of a fabulous plastic which makes touch very comfortable but what’s more – the keyboard produces very clear, distinctive button presses. One of the pluses of the keyboard is the “bulb” shortcut key which switches on and off the keypad backlighting. It also has a Menu button, red & green receivers, Ctrl, Shift, Backspace, Enter and Space buttons. The Ctrl, Shift and Space buttons are doubled for your convenience as you may press them with either of your hands effortlessly. This makes the writing much faster.

16 million reasons

The wonderful display of Nokia E70 visualizes 352 x 416 pixels and offers a remarkable picture with vivid colors and perfect shapes. The large dimensions of the display allow the phone to show more content which is crucial in Internet browsing and text reading. The display is legible under direct sunlight but there is still room for improvement. The backlighting of the display is of the highest quality. It glows evenly and every part of it is perfectly illuminated.

The display’s backlighting

When active, Nokia E70 display its active stand-by display with six icons of applications, list of calendar tasks, missed calls and received messages and the labels of the assigned functions on the two soft keys. Above all this, there are the signal strength bar, the clock (digital or analogue), operator name, and date and battery status. After several seconds of inactivity, the display light goes off and it displays the date and time, the current ringing profile (if different from General) and the missed calls and received messages, if any.

The active stand-by display in both vertical and horizontal mode

Nokia E70 provides very good sound during calls and there aren’t any noises and distractions in the signal. The network signal is strong and reliable, too. The vibration is normal and can be felt in almost every occasion. When somebody calls you, the phone displays the caller name and picture. E70 also displays the picture of the phone (home, work, other) if it is in your phonebook.

Series 60, the 3rd

The main menu of the phone is made of a 3 x 4 matrix grid but turns into a horizontal 4 x 3 matrix when you use the phone opened. You can also set the menu to be viewed as a list. Some sub-menus can also be viewed in grid view but there are some that offer list view only. The horizontal mode of the phone can be very useful when browsing in the Internet or viewing a text document as it allows you to see much more.

Main menu in both vertical and horizontal mode • matrix view submenu

There is a Voice aid application which pronounces everything you do when started. We cannot see the need of such application unless you are driving a car and you need to dial a number or something. Besides, Voice aid is available only in several menus.

Dialer and Clock in Voice aid

Generally, the speed of Nokia E70 is about the same as all the recent Nokia smartphones from the E and N series. This means that it is fast for a smartphone, but it doesn’t react as fast as some phones without operating system. The switch between horizontal and vertical mode is very annoying as it is almost always accompanied by a huge delay.

Vast phonebook

The phonebook of Nokia E70 knows no limits as it uses the shared memory. You can add as much contacts as free memory you have. It offers an endless list of fields to assign for every contact. First and last name, job, home and work address, several different phone numbers, email addresses, web sites, etc.

Adding a new contact • various fields

You can order the phonebook list either by first or last name. Search in the phonebook is performed by gradual typing of the desired contact’s name. As all Symbian phones, E70 phonebook can be synchronized with PC very easy. The PC Suite can export your contacts in several format types, including the most popular Lotus and Outlook formats.

Browsing through the phonebook

Detailed logs

Nokia E70 has a very good call records log. It is used for the data transfers and connections too. It has 30 records capacity and can show all recent calls made with the phone. The phone calls log is divided in three tabs: Dialed, Received and Missed calls. As usual for Symbian, there is a separate Log application, which can store all the events in the last 30 days. The connections are logged with the phone calls. General information about the duration of the connection and data transferred is stored too.

There is a Recent calls menu which shows all calls in the last few days but it is only accessible from the Voice aid application. We couldn’t find a reasonable answer to that mystery but probably the manufacturer will improve this feature in the next firmware version.

Fast writing

The QWERTY keyboard of E70 will make you an unbelievably fast SMS writer for sure. Writing was never easier on a mobile phone. Getting used to the keyboard is easy and comes within the first days of use. The numeric keypad is also very well elaborated for writing text messages.

The messaging menu of the phone is not at all different from any other Nokia Symbian phone. It has an Inbox for all incoming messages except emails and asks you for the type of message you want to create when you initiate the editor. The SMS editor is the same as in previous models and shows a character counter with a digit for the amount of messages that will be sent. T9 dictionary is available to assist, of course. The editor displays up to 6 lines en bloc.

Camera not as good as expected

Looking at the camera lens and specifications we expected very similar performance to the one of the very good camera of Nokia N71 for example. It turned out that Nokia E70 produces very soft images and resolves significantly less detail than most 2 megapixel camera phones. The colors are fine, the processing is good (there are no unwanted artifacts) and the noise levels are low, but the amount of captured detail is too low for the 2MP label.

Very nice videos

In the video department, however, the things are completely different – Nokia E70 captures very good videos with CIF resolution (352 x 288 pixels). The quality of the video of E70 is the same as N71 or N80 for example, but what made us a very good impression was the smooth digital zoom. In contrast to shooting stills, when capturing videos the digital zoom is a very useful feature and when it’s nicely implemented as in Nokia E70 it adds to the fun. Take a look at the samples and you will see what we mean.

Music player

Nokia E70 has a fine music player which handles different file formats as well as playlists. It also has an equalizer with some presets. The phone produces good, loud and clear sound and may even surprise some skeptics as it may be used for a music phone, and what’s more it has large internal memory and a memory card slot.

Music player • Clip details • Equalizer • Bass booster

The music player can play in the background, of course, and the song will be displayed on the active stand-by display below the calendar events. Nokia E70 also has a Flash player and a Real Player and thus it can play videos, too.

Connectivity is not an issue

The phone supports GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, UMTS, PTT, Bluetooth, IrDa and USB. Nokia E70 works with Bluetooth Specification 1.2 supporting the following profiles: Basic Printing Profile, Generic Access Profile, Serial Port Profile, Dial-up Networking Profile, Headset Profile, Handsfree Profile, Generic Object Exchange Profile, Object Push Profile, File Transfer Profile, Basic Imaging Profile, SIM Access profile, and Human Interface Device Profile. Unfortunately, the A2DP profile is not among them which makes impossible the use of stereo Bluetooth headset with the phone.

Connectivity menu

The phone offers a Printer connection application which can be very useful if you intend to use a printer more frequently. The phone makes a connection with the printer via Wi-Fi, USB or Bluetooth, it’s your choice. The USB connection can be made only with a custom USB data cable as Nokia E70 doesn’t have a normal USB port.

The fast data transfer can be used via GPRS, EDGE or 3G UMTS. You can also try the Wi-Fi connectivity, in which case you have to be near a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can set the phone to detect and connect automatically to such hotspots or you can search them manually. When you are connected, E70 automatically creates an access point for the hotspot and starts using its Internet broadband. The connection speed depends on the distance from the hotspot and on the provider. The signal is displayed as the network signal strength.

Comfortable browsing in portrait or landscape mode

In Nokia E70, as in other 3rd edition Series 60 Nokia smartphones, there are two browsers – a great one and a poor one. The poor one seems to be for simple services only, like downloading ringtones, pictures, etc. The great one, however, is one of the best, if not the best. It can open web pages just like you’re browsing them on you PC. The great display makes this browsing even better. The horizontal mode of the phone is very useful for viewing web pages. You can see more and better when you use the phone in landscape mode.

E70 web browser: browsing in landscape mode

There is even a mouse cursor which can be operated through the navigation joystick. Surprisingly, it works great and is very easy to control. A semi-transparent mini-map of the page displays on the screen when scrolling a webpage. The mini-map can also be accessed by a shortcut – the “8″ key. You can zoom in and out on the page using the “•” and “#” buttons. It’s amazing to see how small the text can be and still remain readable.

E70 web browser: browsing GSMarena.com with mini-map overlay

Most of the sites we visited (including gsmarena.com, take a look at the screenshots) looked exactly like on the PC. Even when loading complex pages, the web browser was operating fast and there was no slowdown in the scrolling speed. The browser also loads Flash clips (not all of them, pitifully) and has no problems dealing with Java Scripts.

Business after all

More than everything Nokia E70 is a business phone. That’s why it offers great office features. It has Word, Excel and PowerPoint editors which work very well. You can zoom in and out the file, jump to other page or edit the content. You can also create new files. These Office applications are much better, compared to those in Nokia N80, which could only read office documents but couldn’t edit them.

Office menu • Word document • Excel document

E70 features a dual clock. You can set two different times and dates in two time zones. The Calendar has Month, Week, Day and To-do view. You can assign Meeting, Anniversary, Memo and To-do tasks in the Calendar. You can also put alarms on those assignments.

Month • Week • Day • To-do view of the Calendar

There are also the Notes, Converter, Calculator and Recorder applications in the Organizer menu. The Converter converts Currencies, Area, Energy, Length, Mass, Power, Pressure, Temperature, Time, Velocity and Volume. If you open the QWERTY keyboard and press any key, the Notes application starts automatically, very convenient indeed. The calculator is very simple and easy to use. Regrettably, the Recorder has a one minute limit for voice records as in all Nokia smartphones.

PDF and ZIP come welcome

The phone has a PDF reader application which is very useful if you need to open a document in this format. E70 also has a zip archive application which opens archives with this extension.

Installations menu • PDF options • zip archive name

The test phone we had didn’t have any preinstalled games but there will be a Pro Golf Tour game announced by Nokia which is supposed to come preinstalled on E70. Fortunately, installing games is very easy and if you’re near a Wi-Fi hotspot, it is a two minute job. There is an update application in E70 which connects to the server and offers you to download the Pro Golf Tour game. There is no doubt that this golf game is graphically far from the golf game in Sony Ericsson M600 but its gameplay is rather amusing.

Brilliant, especially if you type a lot

Nokia E70 is an outstanding phone almost in every aspect – convenient QWERTY keyboard, high-resolution display and full set of connectivity options. The controversial design and the annoying response delay during the switch between landscape and portrait orientation of the display doesn’t seem enough to create a bad reputation of this great mobile phone. If it is offered on a reasonable price, there is absolutely no doubt that Nokia E70 will be a huge success.

Weighing a light-ish 127g and finished in a similar silver plastic to the E61 (another in Nokia

Weighing a light-ish 127g and finished in a similar silver plastic to the E61 (another in Nokia’s Enterprise range of S60 3rd Edition smartphones), the E70 certainly looks the part, in terms of functionality taking precedence over form. Having said that, it’s smooth-sided and not that unattractive, with the worst offender being the ‘ears’ on each side of the screen.

At heart the E70 is a fairly standard S60 3rd Edition Eseries smartphone, with the full set of PIM and Enterprise-focussed applications, including the new S60 Office suite and licensed versions of Handy Expense, Zip Manager and WorldMate. See our E61 review for all the gory detail of the platform, hopefully most people reading this will know the drill by now – S60 3rd Edition is slicker and prettier, with better support for different screen sizes, but has a slightly more limited range of third party software available (though in practice this mainly means less games). The display’s impressively high resolution at 352 by 416 pixels and all S60 screen elements are nicely drawn and smoothly finished off.

The kicker comes when you open the device up. As you’ll have spotted from the pictures, the numeric keypad lifts up and over the screen in ‘gull-wing’ fashion, creating a two-part qwerty keyboard that’s surprisingly useful. The ‘flip’ hinge is very sturdy indeed and the keyboard locks nicely into the flat position, ready for holding in both hands and thumb typing. As soon as the keypad is lifted, the display starts to change, and after a couple of seconds delay the S60 interface appears again but this time in landscape mode, as appropriate for keyboard text entry.

The delay when switching only really occurs once, it’s less than a second thereafter [remember, this is the updated review now that v2.x firmware is freely available for the E70]. The reason for the slight delay the first time you do this is perhaps related to the way the interface flipping has been implemented on the E70. My guess is that a whole new instance of much of the interface is launched when switching to landscape mode, and this can take a couple of seconds the first time. It also takes a couple of seconds when opening the keyboard when the closed phone is in ‘locked’ mode, with the OS taking a while to ‘intelligently’ remove the key lock.

You’ll also be down by 4MB of RAM while in landscape mode, which is a bit of a shame, though not usually a major problem. If you’re planning on using Web a lot in landscape mode then you’ll start hitting RAM limits and other applications in the background might have to be closed by the OS, but otherwise most people should be OK, with only minor inconveniences. The now familiar next-gen Web browser from Nokia seems to be the biggest culprit in terms of RAM, by the way, and it’s a real shame Nokia didn’t more more memory in to allow for this – the E70 is a business device, after all, and its target user will want to do a fair amount of W-LAN web browsing on heavyweight sites.

Being able to work in either portrait or landscape has its own advantages, of course, with some applications (Documents, Web) working better in traditional desktop aspect ratio.

In candy bar mode…

And then with the keyboard opened out…

The keyboard itself is top notch, with nicely shaped keys, reasonable key travel and even a dedicated row of number keys at the top. Again we come back to form factor though, as the split nature of the keyboard does mean that you have to make some adjustments to your thumb typing style. Until you get really fast and memorise all the key locations, your eyes may start to get tired constantly moving backwards and forwards between the two halves of the keyboard. When in dim light, the entire keyboard lights up with a gorgeous white backlight, and there’s even a manual backlight key for situations where you need the backlight before the built-in sensor has kicked in.

After quite a bit of practise, I got up to 25 words per minute (see my input speed feature), with the main limitation being having to use my thumbs to type and being restricted with each to the letters on each side of the screen.

Away from the keyboard, the quality’s up to Nokia’s usual fairly high standard, although I didn’t like the slightly fiddly joystick and I also found the positioning of the main applications/menu button to be rather odd – being next to the bevel of the main body of the flip, it didn’t stand out enough and was hard to find and press with my thumb. There’s a good (though rather too easy to hit by accident) Voice Recorder button on the left of the E70, kicking you off immediately into a new recording, and a matching infrared port on the right. There’s the usual Pop Port on the bottom end, along with an original ‘large’ charging jack, bucking the recent trend for Nokia of using a slimmer charging pin.

The Pop port is used, as usual for S60 3rd Edition devices, for PC Suite, Data transfer (a.k.a. mass storage mode) or IP passthrough (connecting through a connected desktop’s broadband connection), but of course you can also use the E70 as a stereo music player. Like the E61, though, Nokia have been penny pinching again and only supply a mono headset – or maybe they assume executives never need to unwind? Still, it’s easy and cheap enough to get a stereo headset as an accessory. Music volume is quite quiet but it’s fairly straightforward to set up your own boosted EQ setting in Music player (or volume boost in OggPlay).

On the back of the E70 is the camera, this being one of the few Eseries devices with a camera. Not just any old camera though, this appears to have the same internal hardware as the well-thought-of N70, with super colour capture on (2 megapixel) still images and reasonable video capture at ‘near-VHS’ quality and 15 frames per second. Having such a high quality camera on a business device was a very welcome surprise. Shooting or filming is best done in portrait mode, for reasons of RAM efficiency and because the viewfinder works better in this orientation.

Since using the E70 I’ve had plenty of positive comments about the quality of its images, arguably better than those from the imaging-focussed N93 by virtue of better colour handling and lower image noise. Oddly, I had far less comments when I was using the N70, with essentially the same camera as the E70 – maybe my soujorn with the N90 (uninspiring colours) and then N93 (noisy, compression artefacts) have made my friends and colleagues appreciate the colours and smooth images from the older camera more…

Video playback is good, too, with RealPlayer working well to play back MPEG-4 and 3GP videos in full screen, especially clear on the very bright high-resolution display.

Beneath the camera is the battery compartment, with the E70 coming with the 1150mAh BL-6C battery, which should keep it going well enough. Interestingly, the plan view of this battery is the same as the more common 850mAh BL-5C so if all else fails when out and about, you could swap in one of these (nick it from your partner’s phone?) and carry on working. A nice touch.

The biggest power drain on the E70, other than the bright screen, is almost certainly going to be its built-in Wi-Fi. This works just as well as on the E61 and enables reasonable web browsing on the smartphone. The smallish screen is the main limiting factor, despite the high pixel count – you can fit most of a page’s width on-screen but in order to read the text you then have to have the eyesight of a ten year old. Still Wi-Fi on a communicator is pretty much a must-have these days and the E70 will enable you to stay in touch with your email and with the world for ‘free’ as long as you’re within range of home/office/free networks. I have to say that I found Wi-Fi reception on the E70 (and E61) to be noticeably worse than on the larger 9500, maybe aerial size really does start to make a difference…

The now familiar new Nokia web browser, in page overview mode. Over Wi-Fi especially it works pretty well, but there’s only so much you can fit on a 2.1 inch screen! Here are some more screenshots:

A key selling point for business is the E70’s strong support for mobile email. It ships with an installer for Mail for Exchange, which syncs with Microsoft Exchange servers and includes support for push email. Once Mail for Exchange has been installed it is a simple matter to fill in the appropriate Exchange server settings, choose which items to sync (from Inbox, Contacts and Calendar) and set up a sync schedule. The sync schedule settings are particuarly welcome since they mean you can escape from the tyranny of push email at the weekend because they make it possible to only have email pushed to you between certain times and on certain days.

Once a new mailbox is set up, Mail for Exchange is created in the Messaging application. Changes made on the device, such as a new contact or the read/unread status of received email are automatically synced in the background to the Exchange server over the air via GPRS, 3G or WiFi. Similarly, changes on the server (such as arriving email, or a meeting entered in Outlook on your PC) are ‘pushed’ to the phone automatically. Email arrives on the phone around 15 seconds after it arrives at the Exchange server, depending on the speed of the connection and the size of the email.

Mail for Exchange is a memory resident program which means, once installed, it operates in the background and is automatically started when you switch on the phone. As such it is very much a configure and forget option. It’s not a perfect solution as it lacks support for syncing folders and doesn’t support meeting requests or global address lists. Sync and mobile email solutions from other vendors, including Blackberry, Visto and Seven are also supported and work in a similar way to Mail for Exchange.

The E70 comes with a 64MB miniSD card, which will be fine for many users, along with the 60-odd MB of the internal flash disk, though anyone intending to install a navigation product, listen to music or watch videos ‘out of hours’ will of course have to dip into their pocket for a much larger card (in addition to the stereo headset).

Working with the new S60 3rd Edition Office Suite, based on Symbian’s original Office software for Psion and Nokia Communicators…

From its specifications, the E70 should wipe the floor with almost any other smartphone or communicator. And it does, providing you make sure you get a unit with the new v2.x firmware (or update an older one using Nokia’s free service). There are slight niggles, such as the split keyboard strangeness, the flush Menu key, the protruding Voice Recorder button and (even with latest firmware) the relative lack of RAM in a ‘professional’ device. But I’m nit picking really, and most definitely coming at the E70 from a power user’s perspective.

The E70 is one of those devices that you really have to try for yourself, even if it’s only standing in a dealer’s shop playing with one for 5 minutes. Typing on the split keyboard is a bit of an acquired taste, though you’ll get used to it fairly quickly. The low RAM issue is the biggest downside of the E70, as with all of Nokia’s 3rd Edition smartphones so far (‘penny pinching’ gone mad, in my opinion), although the new v2.x firmware comes with several RAM optimisations and helps a lot.

The E70 is a fabulously specified device that delivers in almost every area it claims to. Is it a phone? Is it a communicator? Is it a camera or music/video player? Is it a laptop? It’s all of those and more and gets my whole hearted approval.

- Alle Twitter Funktionen: Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet, Follow, Unfollow, Create
and Delete favorits
- Such Funktion und Auto Update

Nokia 3250, 5320 XpressMusic, 5500, 5700, Nokia 5800 Xpress Music, 6110, 6120, 6121, 6210, 6220, 6290, 6650, E50, E51, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E63, E65, E66, E70, E71, E90, N71, N73, N76, N77, N78, N80, N81, N82, N91, N92, N93, N95, N95 8GB and N96

Well, maybe that’s a bit strong. Let me be a bit clearer. You shouldn’t buy it if you already own the Euro version and/or are waiting for the N97.

Nokia is having a one day sale for 10% off the preorder of the 5800XM NAM or the E63. You can also snag yourself an additional 5% off your entire order if you include an accessory with your order (though good luck sifting through the accessories that are actually in stock and available through their online site). As Boy Genius Reports, “throw in another handset or even an accessory such as a Bluetooth headset and you’re looking at $339.15 – not bad at all“, and I agree. I’m not upset at this deal at all. I’m upset at Nokia’s piss poor history of not being able to release US devices at the same time as the Euro counterparts and they’ve been banking on it every time. Read on to understand what I’m talking about.

While not entirely conclusive, these are the handsets I remember having purchased (or had the opportunity to purchase) both the Euro and a subsequent NAM version that better supported US frequencies in some way.

E70

The first handset was the E70. Nokia released the Euro and Asian versions almost everywhere except the US in the middle of 2006, while the US was just seeing the Nokia flagship stores open. Several months later, Nokia released the E70-2, which was the same device in a black variant with GSM 850 instead of the Euro GSM 900 frequency. I don’t think Nokia intentionally turned a profit from releasing these devices separately, however, since the Euro and Asian versions were only available through online importers.

N95

The next was the N95, which is where they really started to collect. I received a phone call on April 4th, 2007 from the Nokia flagship store in Chicago alerting me that they had it available for $749.99 plus Chicago tax (10%, if not more, I don’t remember). The only way to obtain this device prior to the stores carrying it was to spend even more from an online importer. I ordered mine for a little over $820 and they overnighted it to me in Atlanta for free.

A little more than 6 months later, Nokia announces the N95-3, which not only supports US 3G for AT&T’s network, but also included a much needed larger battery and a significant increase in available RAM on the device to drastically improve its performance. Again, I put myself out another $630+ to order this version. Nokia carried this version in their flagship stores alongside the Euro version until it eventually replaced it.

Simultaneously, Nokia released the N95 8gb (N95-2) for the European market that added a larger screen, 8gb’s of (slow) onboard memory, and the same battery/RAM upgrade as the N95-3. This phone was also made available at the Nokia flagship stores as well as several reputable online retailers that trade in the US for at least $700 if I remember correctly.

Following this update, Nokia released the N95 8gb NAM in January of 2008 for another $700+. So, if you follow the complete history of the N95 in all its iterations, anyone eager to take advantage of each upgrade as they were made available would have easily spent over $2500, if not more depending on when the devices were purchased. I myself went through the original, N95-3, and N95-4, spending a total of $2100 (though as always, I sold my previous device to purchase the next, suffering only the difference). Either way, that’s 3 handsets that Nokia tallied off as sales from my credit card when all of the countless complaints about the N80’s battery life and ALL of S60’s lack of available RAM at the time should have prompted them to release the N95-3 the first time around with those issues resolved.

E71

Next was the E71, though these releases were “better” than previous devices. I held out on buying the E71 when it was released due to a lack of interest and only decided it was worth purchasing when the NAM version was available a month later for a decent price. Again, anyone who had been waiting for this device since its announcement was probably prepared to spend the extra money for the Euro version as soon as it was available only to be slapped in the face the following month when the US version was released.

N78

The only exception to Nokia’s pattern seems to be the N78, which is the only device to date to have seen a simultaneous release in Europe and the US. A shame considering the issues people endured with the device as the first S60 handset running FP2.

5800 XpressMusic

And now they’re doing it again with the 5800XM. My girlfriend was kind enough to buy me the Euro version as an early Christmas present in the middle of November, spending more than she probably should have, with both of us being fully aware that a US 3G version was supposedly around the corner. The Nokia flagship stores even had a “pre-release” sale on the device, where they were not advertising it, but had the device available to sell should anyone be looking for it. While I appreciate the gesture of being able to experience the touch enabled version of S60 for the first time on a device that was not intended to be used with the native 3G, we shouldn’t have to beg like this. I can’t believe I have had to wait over three months for the NAM version to finally see the light of day, and this time I’m going to show my disappointment with my wallet.

N97

Not to mention Nokia’s about to do it again with the N97. The Euro variant of the N97 is expected to launch anywhere between now and the end of June (first half of ‘09) with the NAM version supposedly “within weeks” after. I have another post to write about what the N97 means to me, but it’s important enough that I’m not going to buy the Euro version just to have it sooner than I would the US version. Nokia waited too long to release the 5800XM and at this point, I would much rather tough out using the Euro 5800XM with EDGE speeds only for another couple months than spend another $350+ on what’s almost the same phone. After waiting more than a month for ANY device, another 3 weeks to a month and a half is well worth the wait to get the correct device for the correct region where it will be used most (even if the Euro N97 partially supports US 3G).

As Zack suggested in Ricky’s post “Why sell you one device when we can sell you two?” For anybody who still reads this, don’t waste your money on two devices. Nokia’s not going to stop doing this until we stop spending our money like this, and I certainly don’t have the income to afford this kind of mobile lifestyle during these harder economic times.

If you’ve never used the 5800XM before and also happen to have AT&T as your carrier, then I strongly urge you to pick one up if you have no intentions of spending a small fortune on the N97 in a few months. The device has been a wonderful experience thus far and only gets better as apps are developed and ported. Otherwise, have patience. In a few months, you’ll be happy you waited for the device you really wanted.

Once again, I apologize for going off on a rant. Off topic, I mentioned I have another post about what the N97 means to me, but that’s for a different day. It will help explain why I haven’t been posting as much and why I don’t see myself posting as much in the future either.
