el viernes recibí un mail de Nokia avisando que ya tenía disponible el fimrware 400.21.013 para el nokia E71 aunque todavía no tuve tiempo de comprobarlo. Al tratarse de un cambio importante de versión tiene muchas mejoras.

Following some time off since the E51, the Nokia E-series is back to the shop with a new pet for business-minded users. Nokia E71 seems to have it all to take over and build on the E61 QWERTY messengers’ expertise.

The suave upgrade is much slimmer now (and thus much more pocket-friendly), more powerful and a whole lot more skilled. The smaller display is actually the only step down. Well, we’re back in business too, and we’re about to see if that’s the step back before a major leap forward.

It’s quick and responsive and carries a remarkable feature load for its compact size. Connectivity is at its highest with the Nokia E71 boasting every single connectivity option, which is currently available. Add the GPS receiver and the slim metallic design and you’ve got yourself a smartphone that walks and talks high-end. Nokia E71 however is in for some tough BlackBerry competition.

The Bold 9000 seems like a nice alternative having almost the same feature pack as the Nokia. The Bold also has a screen of much higher-resolution than the E71, but then, size is worth a thought.

The E71 got a surprise firmware update today from v300.21.012 to v400.21.013.

As I have promised I will let you know if new official software for E71 will be available. Today I was texted by My Nokia service that new software is there. Nokia Software Updater tells the same. Please check your devices for 400.21.013 firmware and enjoy updating your phones! Remember, as usual the update may not be available for all product codes at once!

Yesterday I got a text from Sky.com saying the Sky app will stop working on 29th November 2009 and when I called Sky they confirmed the Sky Anytime app was being withdrawn, so no Sky+ Remote Record on my E71 or 5800XM

That was yesterday, today I got a tweet from my friend @jamesturley28 to say there is a new Sky Mobile app for S60v3 & S60v5 http://wap.wecomm.com/cs/sky/live/symbian_index.html

Not sure what Sky.com are playing at?

“O SmartPhone é completo e dificilmente se acha um defeito nas suas funcionalidades, visto que a usabilidade dos sistemas da Nokia está anos luz na frente da concorrência.

Fiquem aí com a minha análise e, se discordarem de alguma coisa, me crucifiquem nos comentários!

Design - Sim, este pode ser chamado de SmartPhone com S maiúsculo. O teclado, apesar de pequeno, é confortável para digitar uma grande quantidade de textos e ainda conta com o tão procurado ‘ç’, acentos automáticos e T9.

Ele é bem fininho e cabe em qualquer bolso com facilidade e sem incomodar. Além disso ele vem com uma capinha show de bola para proteger o aparelho de arranhões.

Som - O pequeno notável não fala, ele GRITA. Tá certo que os graves ficam um pouco prejudicados devido ao tamanho das caixinhas de som e que o equalizador programável não faz muita diferença, mas certamente é um diferencial.

Ele também conta com um rádio FM que pára sua execução assim que alguém te liga.

Conectividade - Esse é completo. Vem com tudo que tem direito! Bluetooth, 3G, Infravermelho, USB, GPS e Wi-Fi.

É certamente um celular para navegação na internet, além de um escritório na palma da mão.

Câmera - Sua câmera de 3.2 Megapixels não deve nada a de qualquer um outro celular com as especificações equivalentes. Se bem que hoje ter uma câmera com essa característica num celular já não é mais uma suuuuper novidade assim.

Além de tirar fotos, ela grava vídeo em MPEG4, 320X240, com som e 30fps. Para quem não sabe nada de siglas e quer uma opinião sincera. Está na média.

O diferencial - Bem, o diferencial é a Nokia, que traz uma variedades e aplicativos que acompanham o celular. Você tem praticamente todos os IMs do mercado, além de Twitter e Skype.

A duração da bateria também impressiona para um SmartPhone com tantas funcionalidades. Ela dura aproximadamente 17 dias em stand-buy e 10 horas e meia usando direto.

Uma das únicas coisas ruins é que ele só vem com 110MB de memória interna e nenhum cartãozinho de memória na faixa. Porém ele suporta até 8GB de memória.

Ele está na faixa de R$1200,00 e vale cada centavo.”

The BlackBerry 9630 (Tour) camera is identical to the BlackBerry 9530 (Storm) camera – if you’ve read my review of the Storm camera, you’ve read my review of the Tour camera

The Tour takes pretty awesome pictures for a business phone. It lacks the accelerometer present in the Storm, so there is no auto-rotation, but it features a dedicated two-stage camera button, which is missing on most other devices with a similar form factor, like the Nokia E71.

I recently snapped matching shots with the Tour and the excellent Nokia N900. Although the N900 camera wins overall, the Tour camera holds its own – judge for yourself.

Video recording with the Tour is nothing to write home about, with a resolution of 480×352 pixel, and a frame rate of about 20 fps. Here is a sample video (download original):

I came across this useful article on E71fanatics.com (link is here ) the other day, ‘how to remote lock your E71′. Useful in the respect that if you lose your E71 (or any other Symbian 60 phone), you can send a text message from another phone with a recognised code. On reception of that code, the phone locks itself and becomes useless. Only if the code is re-entered successfully, will the phone become unlocked.

I followed the instructions and sent the pre-defined lock code to the E71, from my other ‘backup’ phone, a Nokia 6680. As expected, the phone immediately locked and would not work without me entering the correct code. Satisfied my phone was now secure, I simply left it at that.

However, I have got into the habit of leaving my phone on overnight, spolit my the E71’s fantastic battery life. I was only when I came to switch the phone off to check the availability of a new firmware upgrade by looking at the operator model code insdie the phone, that I found a problem.

Because I usually install new aplications to the 8Gb MicroSD card, the theme that I had installed didn’t load. An application to display a wallpaper full screen hadn’t loaded and when I tried to access the MicroSD card through the file manager, I got a ‘Memory Card Corrupted’ message.

After a couple more reboots with no luck (and trying to access the via card via a card reader), I found that the phone would access the card if it was simply left for a short while, 5-10 minutes.

I did find that I could access the card via the USB cable, so I started backing up all the data from card, in case there was a big problem with it.

Completing the backup, I disconnected the cable and went to the S60 menu. When I tried to get card information, I was prompted for a password. This gave me an idea that the remote lock had an effect on the card and after a go with different passwords, I hit on the correct one and unlocked the card.

After I accessed a couple of programs and rebooted the phone, all is working ok now. The remote lock feature is still in use on the phone, but because I don’t keep any vital data on the MicroSD card and to save getting any more errors, the password is switched off on it.

The moral of this story? Simples – by all means us the remote lock feature, but be careful of enabling it on your memory card, you may get unexpected results.

Latest Nokia E71 v300.21.012 Firmware

Latest Nokia E71 firmware v300.21.012 is out. I have updated mine. So far so good. For those who still have problem with your Nokia E71, please update to the latest firmware. You can get it here.

Nem parece, mas o meu E71 acaba de completar um ano comigo. Já passamos por muitas aventuras, muitos contratempos, ele já foi deixado de lado por um mês, em prol de um N95 (que nem está mais comigo), brickei o mesmo (e ele continua, até hoje, com firmware de Portugal por causa do episódio!) e muito mais. Então, em comemoração ao velho guerreiro (na velocidade atual, ficar um ano com um celular foi uma vitória para mim!) vou fazer um pequeno review, sobre o seu estado atual.

• Bateria: um dos itens que dita a real durabilidade de um aparelho é a duração de sua bateria, após um bom tempo de uso. E o E71 decepciona ligeiramente. A sua bateria, que durava, para meu uso, de 3 a 4 dias, hoje dura somente 2 a 3 dias. Então, após um ano de uso do aparelho, eu perdi 1 dia de utilização de bateria. A bateria do mesmo é a BP-4L, e, caso eu resolva ficar mais outro ano com ele, é imprescindível a aquisição de uma nova.
• Teclado: após um ano de uso, o teclado do E71 continua excelente. Não apresenta nenhum tipo de folga, continua extremamente responsável à digitação, e continua ótimo para o meu uso. Não pretendo trocar ele nem por um E72 (um E75 quem sabe!).
• Câmera: Não é mistério para ninguém, mas a câmera do E71 é um dos seus pontos fracos. O último firmware melhora a qualidade da mesma, pois a maioria dos problemas de qualidade eram causados pelo firmware. Mas o meu aparelho ainda está com firmware antigo, não pude averiguar.
• Acessórios: Bem, o meu fone de ouvido virou um cabo para a penscan, culpa de um menino apressado e hiperativo que não quis esperar o cabo original chegar. E agora têm que comprar um fone de 2.5mm urgentemente . Mas o fone estava normal, e, embora a qualidade não seja excelente, é um fone muito bom em um pacote básico de acessórios. A cordinha para a mão, eu nem imagino aonde esteja nesse momento, pois nunca a utilizei, e a capinha está em péssimo estado. A ponto de eu ter feito colas com Super Bonder e tudo o mais. Todos os usuários do E71 reclamam da qualidade da capa, e eu espero que a Nokia tenha melhorado este item.
• Velocidade do Sistema: um dos truques para forçar a troca de gadgets, é o aumento da quantidade de memória para rodar aceitavelmente a maioria dos programas. O E71 não sofre de lentidões, pois é um celular parrudo desde a sua concepção. Porém,  a maioria dos novos programas para Symbian são para a sua versão S60^5, para telas touch. Os programas mais atualizados são o Gravity  e o QuickOffice, este, com atualização gratuita para o aparelho.
• Aparência Externa: Um dos pontos fortes do aparelho. O meu E71 conta com duas pequenas marcas, decorrentes de quedas. As marcas são realmente pequenas, e, se fosse um E63, provavelmente teria criado rachaduras. Isto é uma prova de que o celular é extremamente resistente.

Agora, a pergunta: será que o aparelho aguenta mais um ano em minhas mãos? Bem, esta é uma resposta bem subjetiva. Por um lado, não tenho nenhum motivo para trocar de aparelho, uma vez que o mesmo continua funcionando perfeitamente. Porém, todos sabemos que trocas de gadgets nem sempre são movidas pela necessidade, e sim pela paixão. Embora eu sei que tenho muito a perder, pretendo migrar para um 5800, tão logo surja o dinheiro e o negócio oportuno (P.S: Martinez, deixa separado um 5800 para dezembro, hehe).

Finally, N97 was released and I was fortunate enough to get a chance to play with it for a bit. With all the hype that it gets, like Nokia’s answer for IPhone and BlackBerry, it was suppose to be THE PHONE!

But somehow I was left dissapointed. Im not going into the full specs coz there are dozens pagges explaining it in detail out in the web. But I’ll say this, N97 should be the phone if it has the ‘juice’ to run it.

You see, the high powered phone runs at such a small memory RAM. Its like running your car on AA batteries. Its not strong fast. It makes you wait a long time just to access your browser and other installed applications. Even my E71 runs faster than the N97. Even with new firmware release, its still slow. One thing’s good is its 5MP camera and the touch screen.

Now, Nokia E72 will be released soon. Basically its an E71 upgrade. 5mp camera and 250Mb Ram (same like N97). Maybe should consider N97 instead??

Blackberry 9000 Bold and Nokia E71 are two of the best business phones available currently in the market. There is a tough fight between the two and users will surely face a great dilemma to choose one of them.

Both these challengers have got somewhat similar physical attributes as both of these are QWERTY keypad phones as well as display characteristics are also quite similar. Blackberry 9000 has got a 2.6 inches screen that allows 65K colors at 480 x 32- pixels resolution. The trackball navigation is an exclusive feature on it. 114 x 66 x 14 mm are its casing’s dimensions with 133 grams of weight. Comparatively, the Nokia E72’s QVGA screen is of 2.3 inches that displays 16 million colors at 320 x 240 pixels resolution. The phone comes with physical dimensions of 114 x 57 x 10 mm with 127 grams of weight.

The first one has got a 2 mega pixel camera while its contender comes with a 3.2 mega pixel camera. The LED flash attribute is common in both of these phones while the E72 is loaded with Digital Zoom, Flash Mode, Auto Focus, CMOS Sensor, White Balance Mode, Capture Mode, Video Streaming and several other alluring features.

The media player of the Blackberry 9000 supports MP3, WMA, AAC+ files and the given video player allows DivX, WMV, XviD, 3gp files. MP3, WMA, WAV, RA, AAC, M4A music files and WMV, RV, MP4, 3GP video files are playable on the music player and video player of the E71.

3G HSDPA, USB, Bluetooth V2 with A2DP, WLAN Wi-Fi, GPRS and EDGE services are common in both the phones given for data sharing and connectivity. But HSCSD and Infrared are extra on latter one.

The Blackberry 9000 users will get HTML browser for Internet surfing only, the Nokia E71 users can enjoy WAP2.0, HTML & XHTML browsers as well as Nokia browser with Mini Maps application. Document editor, GPS navigation with A-GPS support (Google Maps for Blackberry 9000 and Nokia Maps for Nokia E71) and messaging services are also similar in both of these rivals.

8MB flash memory of Blackberry 9000 can be expanded up to 8GB through the given MicroSD card slot. On the other hand, the Nokia E71 comes with 110MB onboard memory plus MicroSD memory card slot supporting up to 8GB.
