Aunque el domingo se juega el derbi español entre Barcelona y Real Madrid, el culé Xavi Hernández y el merengue Karim Benzema se adelantaron un par de días y disputaron el clásico de forma virtual, en el videojuego FIFA 10 para PlayStation 3, en su modalidad online (cada uno desde su ciudad de residencia), donde el resultado fue de 3-0 a favor del Madrid, con los tres goles de Cristiano Ronaldo.

El dato curioso fue que el delantero francés, quien obviamente eligió al Real Madrid, mandó a la banca a Raúl, capitán de los blancos, y prefirió a Gonzalo Higuiaín como compañero en el ataque (conocedor, no? jaja).

“El equipo que he puesto no se si saldrá en el Camp Nou. En el juego se cambia mucho pero en el campo es diferente. No se si jugará Raúl, es un gran jugador. Desconozco lo que pasará por su cabeza cuando se entere que no le puse”, comentó Benzema a los medios de comunicación.

Por su parte, también hizo una observación sobre su falta de gol en el videojuego.

“Espero que poder marcar al Barcelona, pero lo importante es que el equipo gane el partido. Mientras que ganemos da igual quien marque”, dijo.

Sin duda algo que se vuelve cada vez más popular es que fubolistas e incluso los medios de comunicación usen los videojuegos como una forma entretenida de simular los partidos importantes que se llevarán a cabo en la vida real (curiosidad, innovación, o nada mejor que hacer?), mostrando la importancia cada vez más notorias de esta industria, que se hace cada vez más presente en las calles por medio de anuncios (incluso espectaculares), en televisión con comerciales y obviamente en internet.

Pues a ver qué tal resulta ser el partido de la vida real este domingo, en el Camp Nou. Es un partido muy esperado, pues será la primera vez que midan fuerzas los dos equipos reforzados con sus estrellas: Cristiano Ronaldo y Karim Benzema con el Madrid, e Ibrahimovic con el Barcelona, además del ingrediente especial que siempre representa Messi.

Que gane el más fuerte (bueno, mejor el Madrid, no? jaja).

The EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Basketball tournament is now in its final day at the Lahaina Civic Center.   In the first game of the day, Colorado finished 7^th in the tourney after defeating host Chaminade 73-58.

Photo by Wendy Osher. Maryland advanced to the winner's bracket after defeating Chaminade in Day 1. Maryland trailed Wisconsin by 10 points at the half in the 3rd/4th Place game at the Lahiana Civic Center.

In the third place game, Wisconsin led Maryland at the half 37-27.  The lead had lessened to 3 points with 10:08 left in the game.  In the end it was Wisconsin with the win, taking the 3rd Place finish with a final score of 78-69.

Vanderbilt defeated Arizona for a come-from-behind 5th place finish. The final score: Vanderbilt 84- Arizona 72.

And tonight, Gonzaga returns to the title game, this time facing first time tournament participants Cincinnati.

ESPN 550 AM on Maui is broadcasting all 12 of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Basketball tournament games from the Lahaina Civic Center.  The Nationally televised event is hosted by Chaminade University and is touted as the nation’s premier early season college-basketball tournament.

Play-by-play is provided by on-air personalities Barry Helle, Fred Guzman and Josh Pacheco.  In addition to the radio broadcast on ESPN 550 AM KMVI, the games are also being simulcast on the station’s website at espn550.com.  The national ESPN is carrying the games live in HD on the ESPN network of television stations.

This is the first year that the local broadcast is being offered to web users and the eighth year that Pacific Radio Group has carried live play-by-play radio coverage of the event.

Now in its 26^th year, the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational features a lineup of former national champion teams including Cincinnati, Arizona, Maryland and Wisconsin.  The 2009 lineup also includes Colorado, Gonzaga, Vanderbilt and host Chaminade University of Honolulu.

EA Sports’ FIFA franchise strives for realism, to approximate the experience of being a footballer or managing a club. When you see the gaudy, arcade style interface of FIFA 10 for the Wii, you realize this will be a very different game.

Creating for the Wii constrains developers. The game needs to be simplified. The Wii’s processor is not as powerful as the XBox 360 or the Playstation 3. It can’t handle the graphics. The controls cannot be too intricate for the Wiimote. The target audience is more casual. Most serious console gamers would buy the game for another console.

Madden10 is the newest game realease of the world famous series. I think that this is the best one so far. There is a feature called the pro tak which allows more than one persom to tackle the ball carrier at once. I really think you should buy this game

Just something I am going to do this week.

Okay, first of all this isn’t a draft, maybe do a fantasy draft on madden 09, and then just release and sign players and match them up to Madden. (I would do Madden 2010, but there are players and all, so 09, might be the best idea).

I am planning to start a new career on Friday. But, I am planning to move around players… (release, sign them all to different teams, and invest time into this, and then try and get even players around the game)..

Plus since everyone becomes a free agent in 2009, it’s up to teams, and really GMs to re-sign players.

I am open to all suggestions. Please suggest ideas of where to move people and team people up.

Plus it would be interesting to see if teams really adjust to this and give a power running game in Pittsburgh to move to the passing game, maybe team up Big Ben with Steven Smith (the Passionate Panther).

I am going to see what it’s like when Brady and Manning are in the NFC, and manning has some potential receivers and Brady has couple tall ones, Everyone will have one year contracts, freeing up a lot of CAP in a lot of the teams.

QB competition, Kevin Kolb vs. Kellen Clemens (both have 88 POT), in Baltimore, but get this they have Brandon Marshall and Anquan Boldin?

Or, something interesting.. I definitely might have it benefit me, but I am going to use some players that become coaches so, I have a better chance of hiring them in the future, but I need younger guys as well.

10. UFC 2009 Undisputed

THQ released this game in 2009.  The graphics are incredibly realistic and controls intuitively map each of the fighters limbs to one of the face buttons.  All the big UFC fighters are available across 5 weight classes, each having their own style of fighting.  It made my list because it is the most realistic and technical MMA fighting game that has yet to be released. The really impressive thing is that this was their first crack at the game. After a few more years of development it will truly be the “undisputed” champion of simulation fighting games.

9. Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball

This was, without a doubt, the most entertaining baseball video game.  Released in 1994 by Software Creations for SNES, it was officially licensed by the MLB but not the players association. This meant the teams and stadiums were real, but the players were not. The game featured unique stadiums for each team which was groundbreaking at the time.  I remember playing this game for hours on end.  There has yet to be another baseball game that comes close to entertaining me as well.  Do keep in mind that the Blue Jays had just won the World Series in ‘92 and ‘93 so my opinion may have been biased due to all of the Baseball fanfare.

8. Gran Turismo

Originally released by Sony Computer Entertainment for Playstation in 1997, this game was the first in a dynasty of great racing games.  It featured ground breaking 3D graphics, 175 different cars to take for a spin on 11 different tracks.  This has now evolved to completely HD 3D graphics, 1000 cars and 75 different tracks in the March 2010 release of Gran Turismo 5.

7. John Madden Football

I could not make this list without paying homage to the game that spawned the largest sports video game franchise.  John Madden Football was released by EA Sports in 1989 for Apple II Computer.  The franchise continues to be one of the most realistic (albeit overly complicated) sports video games thanks to John Madden:

He balked at the idea of seven-man football, saying that he wouldn’t lend his name to something that wasn’t completely authentic. Technological limitations made this impossible at the time, but EA stuck with Madden anyway. The persistence paid off. John Madden Football–with a full 11 players per side–was released in 1989 for the Apple II computer. This first game served as a launching point that soon propelled the series to other, more enduring platforms such as the Sega Genesis and the PC.

6. NBA Live 05

Released in 2004 by EA Sports, this game featured a new NBA All Star Weekend game mode that allowed you to partake in the electrifying Slam Dunk Contest.  The NBA Live franchise doesn’t really do it for me as it seems somewhat less refined than their flagship titles (FIFA, NHL and Madden), but the Slam Dunk Contest was fun.   Probably more so than the actual game itself.

5. NHL 2006

NHL 2006 was released by EA Sports in 2005 and featured the new “skill stick” control setup which gives the gamer complete control of both the players skates and stick independently.  Traditional hockey games would merge the two making the players take shots only in the direction they were skating.  Dekeing? Now possible, thanks to the skill stick.  This version also featured a new physics engine that removed the magnetic attraction between players and the puck for more realistic game play.

4. Wii Sports

This was the first video game to get the gamer  physically involved in the game.  It was released by Nintendo in 2006 and was a compilation of sports simulators that came with the Nintendo Wii game console to demonstrate what it could really do. It included tennis, baseball, golf, bowling and boxing games.  No, the graphics are not very impressive.  The players have very primitive structural models that look far from human.  All that being said, it was a breakthrough in sport video gaming and served as a springboard for all other Wii sport games.

3. NHL ‘94

Published in 1993 by EA Sports this was the first true hockey game and a definite cult classic.  This game even makes appearances as an easter-egg in future releases to remind us of a better time.

After establishing themselves in the virtual rinks, EA combined both NHL and NHLPA licenses in NHL ‘94, allowing them to feature all 26 real teams (including both expansion teams) and players of the new NHL season for the first time in the series. Aside from the licenses, the gameplay for this edition sees for the first time the inclusion of the devastating one-timer shot, but to keep forwards (literally) in check, defenders also feature harder body checks, with new animations.

2. Pong

The classic game was released in 1972 by Atari and featured two paddles that would hit a ball back and forth across the screen.  This prehistoric tennis game was not only among the first sport video games to be released, but helped to launch the entire video gaming industry with is popularity in the arcades and later in the home.

The best sport game ever created. Released in 2009 by EA Sports, the players can now move in 360 degrees as opposed to the (very frustrating) 8 directions available in previous versions. A plethora of special moves at your finger tips, intelligent passing logic, almost every team and stadium under the sun, stunning graphics and animations, new player collisions and great online play make this the game to which we compare all others.

Now available for the Xbox 360® video game system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Fight Night Round 4 is the latest entry in the critically acclaimed boxing series from Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS).

According to the simulation, Cotto’s defensive prowess and methodical approach to attacking Pacquiao’s body kept the opening rounds extremely close. As the fight approached the middle rounds, Manny countered Cotto’s strategy with his blinding speed, keeping out of range and forcing Cotto to keep moving forward.

Forced out of his defensive strategy Cotto leaves himself open and Manny takes advantage by raining down quick combos while maintaining his range. The combos begin to take their toll on Cotto as the fight approaches Round 8, as he is bleeding and visibly slowing down. Cotto continues to attempt to pressure the body, but the damage he has taken throughout the fight slows him down so much that he can’t get close to Pacquiao. Manny, who seems as fresh as when he started the fight, sends Cotto to the mat with a weaving left hook at the end of the 10th. Despite beating the count, Cotto is never able to recover and loses the bout by unanimous decision.

I walked into my mate’s lounge the other day to see a football match on the television. Bizarrely it featured England playing an autumn friendly against the Young Boys of Bern. It took me a little while to realise that Andy Gray kept repeating himself at the worst possible moments and that either the match clock was telling me that time had sped up, or I was somehow slowing down while reality zoomed by at its usual pace and that I’d sealed myself in some fourth dimensional traffic jam. Looking closer I realised that whilst the players on the screen did in fact look remarkably life-like, Wayne Rooney did kinda appear slightly more beaten-with-the-ugly-stick than usual, and that what I was actually witnessing was a game of FIFA 10 in progress. Six hours, and numerous Live Lounge matches later, I had run into town to buy my own copy.

FIFA 09 undoubtedly showed off exactly what a sports title representing the beautiful game should be all about: fluidity, great visuals, the enthusiasm of the crowd and the realism of the sport.

A year later we now have the latest iteration in the franchise, FIFA 10, and just when you think it can’t be done it’s improved in almost all areas from its predecessor and is an even more realistic representation of football.

Featuring full 360 control over the ball, improved dribbling, improved ball physics and much more realistic character models these are just some of the 50+ improvements that EA have made in FIFA 10 to ensure that it reins as the premier sports title in 2010.

It’s action packed with a ton of game modes sure to satisfy any football fanatic and will always keep you coming back for more. Manager Mode, Be A Pro, Lounge Mode, Online Leagues etc… You name it FIFA 10 has it.

Manager Mode is back and slightly improved over 09’s Manager Mode. As always you can choose any team of your liking from Chelsea or Manchester Utd in the English Premier League or Real Madrid, Barcelona from the La Lige or choose Sydney FC or QLD Roar from the Australian A-league.

It’s up to you as Manager, to take your team to the top of the league rankings and ultimately win the title at the end. Thus enabling you to buy new players as you progress, building your board’s confidence in you, as well as purchasing new players from other teams once the transfer market opens up.

So . . . what’s new then?

It’s the same old tried and proved formula that worked before…with some nice new additions.

What isn’t the same old formula though is FIFA 10’s online component. Classic Ranked match has had a visual overhaul now making it even easier for you to search and find a match over Xbox live.

Latency bars are now featured in the lobby when choosing a team so you know whether or not the game will run smooth or extremely badly, the amount of total players online playing the game and even searching for a match is now conveyed.

So you have more flexibility on who you wish to play in an online match, which is great, and the networking code is back and better than ever so as long as your internet connection is good playing opponents from say England, America, France and so forth won’t be as frustrating as 09.

It’s the little things that count

Yep, it’s the little features in FIFA 10 make it stand out above the rest.

Most noticeable is whilst in any match over the course of playing FIFA 10 is how the players now react in the match.

Players will now jump in front of strikers taking shots to block any chance they may take and in the last dire seconds of the match if they miss a perfect opportunity to equalize and miss, they will fall to the ground and start praying.

Many small fouls don’t require a full set up of a free kick just to pass the ball as quick free kicks have been introduced. Where any tiny foul is committed the free kick taker will run up to the ball and pass it trying to catch the opposing team on the counter.

It’s these new noticeable features that improve the quality and experience so much more than what was experienced with FIFA 09.

Oh dear, the niggles . . .

Unfortunately though, some niggly little things are still apparent in FIFA 10.

From time to time players will confuse themselves on the field and run into each other, passes will sometimes go to another player that was not the intended target, the keeper will sometimes come a bit out of his position and get caught off guard.

These aren’t major and don’t ruin the game at all but you do run into these problems from time to time and when you  need that winning goal they do make the game frustrating when nothing is working for you.

It’s graphically the same game with improved character models and some nice snow weather effects, an improved gaming experience with 50+ improvements to refine gameplay and features more games modes than you can name.

Live Season 2.0 is better than 09’s Live Season where everything from Injuries, Yellow/Red Cards, fouls- you name it- is updated for the league you have chosen to download it for. You have the option to turn these off so that when you go online your opponent if they have it will not be able to have their team updated.

You can buy Live Season 2.0 from the brand new FIFA Store which features content from Be A Pro booster packs, commentary in Spanish, French etc, as well as LS2.0 for almost every league in the game.

However, overall…

The package overall is superb and if you are looking for THE sports title of 2009 to tide you over till next year’s plethora of sport games FIFA10 is the choice of game here.

It’s an ever growing franchise that has only been improving with each new year and soon enough I have no clue if there will ever be anything to improve on.

If you haven’t played any of the FIFA titles beforehand then FIFA 10 is the best entry in the franchise to get started with.  Still, with Pro Evolution 2009 finally, after 3 years, stepping up to the game to try and be the best you will know that FIFA 2011 will be even better to continue its reign at the top of the league standings of this never ending derby, but for now…The World Game is FIFA 10.

I just purchased FIFA 10 for the PS3, and I would highly recommend it.  The graphics are incredible and the game play is more realistic than it was in 09.  Baseball and soccer are my 2 favorite sports, and I was also impressed with MLB 09 The Show when it came out.  However, I had much more connection problems with the online play on the The Show than I have with FIFA, and playing online is where I get the most enjoyment, although building a dynasty can be fun too.

Anyways, I’ve had my PS3 for about 3 years now so I thought I’d give my 2 cents on it.  There is nothing negative to say about it.  I think it’s an excellent system for the following reasons:

• Reliability–I’ve put a crap load of game play hours into my PS3, and never had any problems with the way it runs.  A few freezes here and there, but very few and very far between.
• Design — Sony did good.  Wireless internet, Blu-Ray, can play PS2 games, things are presented in a simple and attractive way.
• Value–Yeah, I bought mine for $500, now they’re going for $300.  Totally worth it though for the product and how much time I’ve spent entertained by it.

However, I have found that it’s easy for me to lose myself in it.  It’s much easier for me to control how much I play if I buy sports games rather than role playing games.  I guess I’m just trying to say “know your limits”.
