by Maggie Walters || AHL On The Beat Archive

When Kevin Lalande found out he had been traded from the Calgary Flames organization to the Columbus Blue Jackets, it was just a few minutes before the NHL trade deadline for the 2008-09 season.

The call came so late in the day that Lalande began to believe he wasn’t going to be traded, despite the personal inkling that he was on the move due to Calgary’s organizational depth at the goaltending position. When the call finally did come, one of the first people he shared the news with was his good friend, Crunch goaltender Dan LaCosta.

LaCosta, who met and befriended Lalande three years ago, had been talking to Lalande just a few minutes before he received the news. Although it looked as though he would not be traded, LaCosta remembers telling Lalande to remain optimistic, since he was hoping for a better opportunity to prove himself with a different team.

“You never know what might happen,” said LaCosta. “The deadline hasn’t passed yet.”

Just 15 minutes later Lalande not only learned that he had been traded, but that he was now a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets organization and more specifically after being assigned by the big club, part of the Crunch roster, where he would join his comrade in the nets for Syracuse. He quickly called LaCosta back and told him what had transpired, but LaCosta didn’t take the news quite like Lalande expected he would.

“He thought I was playing a joke on him,” said Lalande. “He made a few phone calls and didn’t believe me until he saw it on the internet.”

When Lalande officially joined the Crunch, it was the second time he and LaCosta donned the pads for the same team. Although they had played against each other frequently in the Ontario Hockey League, they met for the first time when they were both selected to play for the Eastern Conference squad at the 2006 OHL All-Star Classic. After rooming together at the All-Star game, the two continued to keep in touch.

“We found out that we both spent our summers in Ottawa,” said LaCosta. “We started getting together over the off-season and eventually became pretty good friends.”

Despite playing on different teams, the two continued to keep in touch through the season. Both LaCosta and Lalande are familiar with the ups and downs associated with the rigors of being a goaltender. Their careers have taken a very similar path, leaving them with much in common.

LaCosta had been playing in the OHL when he was selected by Columbus in the third round, 93rd overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. After being drafted, he played out the rest of his junior career with the Barrie Colts, turning in a solid final junior campaign in 2005-06, where was among the OHL league leaders in wins (36 – 2nd), goals-against average (2.55 – 2nd), save percentage (.915 – T-4th), and shutouts (6 – 2nd).

LaCosta joined the professional ranks in 2006-07, splitting time between the ECHL’s Dayton Bombers and the Crunch. Since then, the native of Labrador City, N.L., has been a constant presence between the pipes for Syracuse at the War Memorial, compiling a cumulative 36-33-7 record with a 2.89 GAA and .909 save percentage in 90 career games.

 • Hennessy’s time has come

 • Sharks sink teeth into community programs

 • Winning still top priority for Mink

 • AHL ON THE BEAT ARCHIVE

Just like LaCosta, Lalande was also playing in the OHL when he was selected by Calgary in the fifth round, 128th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. While his buddy LaCosta was getting his feet wet in his first professional season in 2006-07, Lalande put together a fine final junior year of his own with the Belleville Bulls, going 27-17-3 with a 3.01 GAA and .919 save percentage, the third-best save percentage in the league that season.

The Kingston, Ont., native made his professional debut in 2007-08, splitting time between Quad City and Calgary’s ECHL affiliate, the Las Vegas Wranglers. The 2008-09 season was a breakthrough campaign for Lalande, as he went a combined 13-5-1 with a 2.17 GAA and .928 save percentage in 21 combined AHL games with the Crunch and Quad City.

“We went through a lot of the same things, I was just a year behind,” said Lalande. “It’s never easy your first year as a pro, there’s a learning phase and Dan really helped me get through it. He had been through what I was going through, he was a big help.”

LaCosta continued to be a big help to Lalande even after his arrival in Syracuse, when he challenged LaCosta’s spot as the club’s starting goaltender. Lalande played 15 games down the stretch for the Crunch last season, going 9-5-1 with a 2.26 GAA and .927 save percentage.

Despite the competition between the two netminders, they did not let it affect their friendship.

“He was a great support when I came at the end of the year,” said Lalande. “It just shows the kind of character he has; he always shows support for his teammates.”

LaCosta calls Lalande a positional or percentage goalie, who reads the game really well.

“He always seems to be in the right position,” said LaCosta. “He makes it look easy most of the time. I’m bigger and maybe a little quicker, that’s how I make up for his positioning being better than mine.”

Regardless of the style of whomever is in net, both goalies have come into the 2009-10 season with the same goals: improving as individuals and to give the team a chance to win every night. They are both also committed to keeping their friendship intact despite going head to head to earn the Crunch’s number one goaltending slot.

“We discussed after I got traded that competition for time wouldn’t affect our friendship,” said Lalande, “we’ll push each other to be better but the competition will stay at the rink.”

It’s clear that regardless of who starts in between the pipes for the Crunch this season, these two friends will have each other’s support no matter what.

Singular words and phrases No, I don’t mean remarkable or extraordinary words. I mean words and phr

Singular words and phrases

No, I don’t mean remarkable or extraordinary words. I mean words and phrases that are singular. In other words, should we say: ‘Either the pot or the kettle is black’ or ‘Either the pot or the kettle are black?’

I’m talking about words like:

Either

Neither

None

Or

Each

And the phrases:

One or more

The number of

A number of

One of the

Three fifths, two thirds etc

Either

Either is singular which means it is correct to write:

Either the pot or the kettle is black.

Neither

Neither is singular which means it is correct to write:

Neither the pot nor the kettle is black.

Either and neither – a slight complication

Look at this sentence:

Neither the doctors nor the nurses were prepared to go on strike.

Because ‘doctors’ is plural and ‘nurses’ is plural this sentence is correct – you wouldn’t write:

Neither the doctors nor the nurses was prepared to go on strike.×

Similarly:

Either the doctors or the nurses were there throughout the day.

You wouldn’t write:

Either the doctors or the nurses was there throughout the day.×

This slight complication is not too daunting, as you can easily ‘hear’ what’s right and what’s wrong.

None

None is (usually) singular – after all, it is a shortened form of ‘not one’. For example:

There are several doctors on duty, but none is available at present.

Oh yes, that ‘usually’. Some authorities say it is acceptable to make ‘none’ plural if it sounds really wrong or pretentious when made singular. But I think it’s safest to keep it singular. Just read ‘not one’ for ‘none’ when checking your writing, and you’ll get it right. After all, you wouldn’t write:

There are several doctors on duty, but not one are available at present.×

Or

Or is singular. Look at the following incorrect sentences:

Beef or pork are fine for the main course. ×

I have told the interior designer that linen or cotton are acceptable. ×

These should be:

Beef or pork is fine for the main course.

I have told the interior designer that linen or cotton is acceptable.

Each

Each is singular. For example:

Each of the patients was seen separately.

Not ‘were seen separately’

Each of the reports was read in turn.

Not ‘were read in turn’

One or more

One or more is singular. Read this sentence from a medical website:

In addition, 53 per cent of men and women in the United States report that one or more of their close relatives have a drinking problem.

That sentence should end:

…has a drinking problem.

The number of

‘The number of’ is singular. For example:

The number of schools with good results has dropped.

The number of adults who cannot read is gradually falling.

A number of

A number of is always plural, for example:

A number of schools have made improvements this year.

A number of adults have decided to learn to read.

One of the…

This phrase often causes confusion. For example, look at this incorrect sentence:

Mr Smith is one of the committee members who agrees with the proposals.×

This should be:

Mr Smith is one of the committee members who agree with the proposals.

You can check this by taking out the first part of the sentence:

…the committee members who agree with the proposals.

You would not write:

…the committee members who agrees with the proposals.

Fractions

Look at these two correct sentences:

Three-fifths of the people are happy to take part in the survey.

Three-fifths of the work is already done.

The first is correct because ‘people’ is plural.

The second is correct because ‘work’ is singular.

You can usually trust your ears to tell you if the sentence is correct. For example, the following just sounds horrible:

Three-fifths of the people is happy to take part in the survey.

Bom dia ae!

var i = 0;
$(“#container-slider”).find(“.parte-slider”).each(function(){
i=++;
});

$(xml).find(”noticia”).each(function(){
var titulo = $(this).find(”titulo”).text();
var texto = $(this).find(”texto”).text();
noticia += titulo+” “+texto;
});

I am not a singer, but my sister happened to visit my house today, and she is. No instruments and you can kind of tell it was made by amateurs, but it’s good if I do say so myself. Slightly different lyrics from the original.

Obama Hates Me, a SCAAC original parody: Written by Guffy Conservative with Contributions from SisterO. Sung by SisterO (download):

I was reading a post from fxxxmylife.com, where a guy found out that his brother was adopted. When the guy found out he said that he’s always wanted to have sex with his brother (who I’m assuming is straight, hence the FML). That got me thinking about if I had a gay brother, would I want to do him.

Siblings have a love for each that usually is not sexual. Like I’ve said in a previous blog, gay men can get sex almost literally on tap, and not usually have any emotion with that, it’s just simply for pleasure. But people are normally more comfortable with family, quicker than a stranger. Gay brothers who do each other must be really emotionally close with each other, and love each other in a brotherly way.

I personally think that men in general have a higher sex drive than women (Maybe women can control it better). Why bother going out cruising for sex, when your gay brother is in the other room?

If I had a brother, and he asked me for sex… would I object? What, in your opinion, is the right thing to do? Would you have sex to give in to both of your sexual desires, or would you feel that you respect your brother way too much to actually do it?

Okay so I have a best friend that invited me for Halloween to her house( in south of Calgary and I live in north).I asked my dad, he said no. I said why? He said because they’re too far away and because their family’s messed up! I am mad at him for saying because her dad’s been nicer to me than mine has. By messed up he meant that because they (her and her siblings) don’t have a mom, their messed up.. their mom and dad are separated but her dad manages EVERYTHING really well. And I’m only going to her house for like 5 min and the we’re leaving for trick or treating. I told him that, he won’t listen. It’s been 4 months since we’ve seen each other and she’s my best friend… and her dad even agreed to pick me up. I told him that too, he still said no. My dad trusts this other girl called dipal more than me. So he said if dipal’s coming, then you can go and her dad hates me, in every possible way. And he doesn’t listen to you if you’re younger than him. So she can’t ask him either. Please tell me what to do. Halloween is 4 days away. My last Halloween and my last last Halloween sucked. I kow this one wont if I go with my best friend but my dad wont let me. Should I go by myself without telling them…? or should I let this Halloween go to waste too? Please tell me what to do because I tried everything I can for them to say yes. But nothing worked. PLEASE HELP!!

A little details, my bf and I made a bet this week about the ALCS game and I won. For halloween I want to dress my bf up as a girl, we are both in college and going to a freinds house for a party that night. I was wondering how far I should take the bet into making him into a girl. I was thinking of trying to make him look as a passable college girl for halloween. I have a couple costumes that he should fit into since he is a cc runner and is 5′10” 150 lbs. Like I said, I have a couple costumes or could have him wear a dress. Heels? Make-up? Thanks <3

I have a slim body type to most people and some say I look like Vanessa Hudgens, lol! So thats what I look like and I was hoping to get an idea please? Thanks!

0Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is the 1989 sequel to the popular horror film, Halloween. It was directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard and starred Donald Pleasence, who again portrayed Dr. Sam Loomis and Danielle Harris, who returned to play Jamie Lloyd. The film takes place exactly one year after the events depicted in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. The Shape has returned to the sleepy town of Haddonfield, Illinois to murder his niece, Jamie, who is now mute. Dr. Loomis tries to save the day with the help of Sheriff Meeker.
1This is the least successful Halloween film in the franchise. The film was rushed into production, without even a final draft of the script. The tagline for the film was “Michael Lives. And This Time, They’re Ready!”
2The film begins with a recap of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, in which Michael Myers is shown being shot at and falling into a mine shaft. Michael, however, finds a way out and stumbles into a nearby river. He makes his way into a small shack by the river owned by a local hermit (Harper Roisman). Once there, Michael collapses and remains in a comatose state for a full year. On October 30, 1989, Michael awakens, kills the hermit, and returns to terrorize Haddonfield, where his young niece, Jamie Lloyd (played by Danielle Harris) continues to live after nearly being killed by Michael the year before.
3Jamie has been mute since attacking her foster mother at the end of film 4, but exhibits signs of a telepathic link with her evil uncle, after touching Michael’s hand at the end of the 4th film. Dr. Sam Loomis realizes that this link exists, and plans to use it to put an end to Michael’s reign of terror. Michael begins stalking Rachel (played by Ellie Cornell), Jamie’s foster sister and her friend Tina (played by Wendy Kaplan). After both are killed Jamie agrees to put herself in danger to help Loomis stop Michael for good. With Jamie’s help, Loomis lures Michael back to the old Myers house.
4Michael makes many attempts at killing Jamie, finally getting the chance to in the attic. In a desperate move, Jamie tries appealing to Michael’s humanity by calling him “Uncle”. Myers pauses, prompting Jamie to ask to see his face. He takes off his mask, and a lone tear runs down his face. Jamie reaches up to wipe it away, and Michael is thrown into a rage. The killer pursues Jamie, who runs into Loomis. The doctor seems to turn on the girl as he shouts for Michael to come and take her. It turns out that he has used the girl as bait, thus leading Michael to walk beneath a heavy chain net. Once the net falls, Dr. Loomis fires two ineffectual shots from a tranquilizer gun, causing him to violently beat Michael with a wooden plank. They take Michael to the local sheriff’s station, while it is explained because Michael is too violent and insane, the sheriff’s department contacted the US National Guard to escort Michael to a maximum-security military prison. However, a mysterious stranger dressed in all black, has come to Haddonfield, and while Jamie sits in a patrol car outside, the stranger causes an explosion. Jamie walks through the station finding the bodies of the eight machine gunned officers. She goes over to Michael’s holding cell to discover that it’s empty, with the bars bent open. As Jamie sobs realizing Myers is once again able to get her, she moans in despair “no…No!”
5The success of Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers had jump-started Michael Myers’ fame as the ’80s slasher movie craze had began to sub-side. Film franchises like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street were coming to the end of their winning streak. As the previous film was still in theatres, Moustapha Akkad had already laid out plans for Halloween 5. The producers wanted to screen the film in October 1989, just one year after the previous sequel.
6The first draft of the script was written by Shem Bitterman. Bitterman’s idea was that Jamie Lloyd would become evil after stabbing her step-mother to death while The Shape was after her. This idea was rejected by the studio and Akkad, who brought in Michael Jacobs to write the script. After reviewing the script, director Dominique Othenin-Girard had edited the script and created new scenes for more violence.
7Veteran actor Donald Pleasence had disagreements with Akkad and Othenin-Girard, citing that Jamie should have been portrayed as “all-evil” after stabbing her step-mother. Akkad disagreed, thinking that fans wanted to see more of The Shape. In an interview, Danielle Harris explained what she thought of the idea. Harris said,
8The way Halloween 4 ended, I thought I was going to be the killer. I thought it would have been fun to come back as the killer, or Michael’s sidekick. Scary, but fun.
9Halloween 5 had been rushed into production on May 1st, 1989 before there was a solid script. The script was filmed without perfections and many suspenseful scenes, such as Tina and Samantha doing cart-wheels near The Shape, was cut to less suspenseful scenes.
10Originally, Rachel’s death was supposed to be by having scissors shoved down her throat. Ellie Cornell, who played Rachel, didn’t like the idea and requested it be changed to being stabbed with the scissors.
11The Hermit, who was shown in the beginning of the film as living in a quiet shack outside of the river with his parrot, was originally supposed to be a young man, named ‘Dr. Death’ in the script, who tried to bring The Shape back to life after finding him. His shack was supposed to filled with ancient runes, tablets, and other items for resurrection. This scene was filmed, but was re-shot to an old man, instead of a younger man. The scythe that was supposed to kill Samantha was originally going to go through her fore-head.
12The scene where Michael Myers drives a car while wearing a different kind of mask was initially scripted to have him wear a Ronald Reagan mask. However, the idea of a Reagan mask was soon rejected in order to keep the film devoid of any political subtexts.
13The script added two “bumbling” cops, Deputies Nick and Tom, with their own “clown theme” in the background to homage a scene in Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left.
14Returning from Halloween 4 were veteran actors Donald Pleasence, Danielle Harris, Ellie Cornell, and Beau Starr as Dr. Sam Loomis, Jamie Lloyd, Rachel Carruthers, and Sheriff Ben Meeker. Starr would later appear in an un-aired Halloween 5 television spot.
15Karen Alston, who portrayed Darlene Carruthers in the previous film, reprised her role in the beginning of the film showing the anonymous person in the mask stabbing her as she falls into the bathtub of water. Her voice-over was recorded by Wendy Kaplan. Kaplan won the role of Tina Williams, the loud and “willy” friend of Rachel’s. After Rachel’s demise, Tina becomes the role of Jamie’s protector.
16George P. Wilbur, who had portrayed The Shape in the previous film, didn’t express interest in returning to play the role. Don Shanks was cast to play the speech-less, white-masked, murderer. Shanks had already played a similar character in the first two Silent Night, Deadly Night films. Shanks also played the Man in Black. Wilbur, who had to wear hockey pads to appear to have a bigger build, would later portray the Shape in the next installment, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers. Shanks did not have to wear the hockey pads because he was already built big.
17Max Robinson would play Maxwell Hart, the doctor who assists Jamie when she is having one of her nightmares in the beginning of the film. Betty Carvalho appears as his assistant, Nurse Patsey, who has a “motherly” feel to Jamie. Jeffrey Landman portrayed Billy Hill, Jamie’s best friend, who has a stuttering problem. Landman worked with a coach who taught him about stuttering to help him prepare for the role.
18Newcomers such as Tamara Glynn, Matthew Walker, and Jonathan Chapin appear as Samantha Thomas, Spitz, and Mike, who are friends of Tina and Rachel.
19Debra Hill, who had wrote and produced the first two films, had sold her and John Carpenter’s rights to the series before Halloween 4. She had met director Dominique Othenin-Girard at The Sundance Film Festival and liked his style.
20She arranged a meeting with Othenin-Girard and Moustapha Akkad. Akkad liked Othenin-Girard and he became the director. This was Debra Hill’s last involvement in the series. Othenin-Girard wanted to bring the series closer to the original, but wanted more blood in the film. The original uncut version of the film featured more explicit gore and violence. Akkad did not like this decision, as it was this that made the original and Halloween 4 so popular.
21After filming for two weeks, Donald Pleasence had given his much bigger trailer to Danielle Harris once he left set. Harris’s mother had been complaining about the small size of her daughter’s trailer and Pleasence decided that she should have his.
22The film began production on May 1st, 1989 and was being filmed in and around Salt Lake City, Utah, just like its preceder. The bus that the Man in Black gets off of stops outside the exact same store where Jamie and Rachel went to get a Halloween costume in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers.
23Unable to find a small, victorian house like the Myers House in Halloween, the filmakers chose a bigger, more mansion-ish house because they needed a house that could provide wide rooms, hallways, an attic, a basement, and a laundry chute. Donald Pleasence accidentally broke Don Shanks’s nose on the set when they were filming the scene where Dr. Loomis beats The Shape with a 2×4 block of wood.
24Don Shanks was also injured when he was filming the scene where The Shape crashes Mike’s camaro into the tree. Dominique Othenin-Girard had forgot to yell “Cut!” and fire was beginning to emerge from the car. Finally, stunt coordinator Don Hunt told Othenin-Girard to finally yell cut. Wendy Kaplan was also injured in this scene. The car almost ran overtop of her. She was un-injured as seen in Halloween: 25 Years of Terror.
25Gregory Nicotero and Wendy Kaplan were seeing each other during filming. According to Danielle Harris, Tamara Glynn was drunk during the filming of her death scene.
26The film had been fighting an X rating with the violence, blood, and gore. Some scenes were trimmed down to keep it Rated R, including a shot of Mike quivering on the ground after Michael stabs him in the head with a hammer claw, a shot of glass embedded in Officer Eddy’s face after Michael bashes his hand into the windshield, and Billy’s leg being hit by the camaro.
27The scene in which Jamie is in the laundry shute, she was originally supposed to be stabbed in the leg, sending a splash of blood into the camera. The aftermath can be seen when Jamie gets out of the shute, a dark line of blood is flowing on her leg. Danielle Harris wore a prosthetic leg for the filming. She still owns this leg.
28An alternate opening was filmed with the Hermit replaced by a younger, hippier, man named ‘Dr. Death’ with all kinds of ritualistic items in his cabin. This scene can be seen on Inside ‘Halloween 5′.
29More scenes with the character of Billy were filmed, but were cut. The scenes include Billy meeting Rachel and Tina for the first time on his bicycle with Max the dog, Jamie telling Billy to follow Tina to the Tower Farm, and a scene showing Billy being rushed into the children’s clinic, while the police find the body of Dr. Hart.
30KNB Effects had designed grotesque facial makeup for Michael Myers’ unmasking towards the end of the film. The producers told them to do so as an option, either showing Michael’s badly scarred face or keep it in the dark. They went for the latter.
31Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers opened on October 13th, 1989 at #2 and earned $5,093,428 to 1,495 theatres. It quickly fell from the box office with a mere $11,642,254 – the least successful Halloween film to date. The film went straight to video outside of North America.
32Most reviews to Halloween 5 are negative to mixed. Many believe the rushed script, and irritating characters (such as Tina Williams) are the reason for this. Many also believe the competition between Halloween 5 and Halloween 4, as it was being released to video at the same time of this film’s release. Many also feel that the character of Rachel had died too quickly into the film, being a favorable character.
33The film has been made into VHS and DVD format. It has been released, with Halloween 4, on Divimax edition and with the original Halloween in 2008 for the Halloween: 30 Years of Terror box-set.

The word ‘ruach’ is the Hebrew word for the Holy Spirit. It is also the same word for breath. What we all need to live. In the beginning of the Hebrew Scriptures, there is this creation story metaphor about how God created man and He breathed life into Adam (which is Hebrew for man, but is pluralized — so it would be rendered as ‘men’). God breathed life into mankind. But, not just life/breath through the nostrils. But He breathed the Holy Spirit throughout all of mankind. Sometimes there is language that seems to suppose that some have the Holy Spirit, and some don’t. And those who say a prayer and are saved, somehow have the breath of God even more than those who haven’t said this mysterious prayer (no one that meets Jesus says a prayer, they just follow Him) and are valued less. This should not be so. To God all people have equal value. And this realization tells us that we don’t have to ‘earn’ the Holy Spirit or favor. Cause when God saw that it was ‘good’…it was all of mankind not just the ones who follow, but all of mankind. So, how does this change the way we see each other?

THE CANADIAN PRESS

PHOENIX — A faceoff is looming between the two primary figures in the Phoenix Coyotes bankruptcy case.

Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman are both expected to take the stand in court this week, according to an agenda filed in U.S. Bankruptcy court Wednesday.

The two men are each scheduled to appear for 40 minutes of questioning on Friday — the second of two days Judge Redfield T. Baum has set aside this week to oversee an auction for the team.

Offers from Balsillie and the NHL are the only two expected to be considered by the court.

Balsillie’s company PSE enters with the highest bid, as much as US$242.5 million, contingent on being able to move the Coyotes to Hamilton. He upped his offer over the weekend by extending the city of Glendale the opportunity to take $50 million in exchange for a release from the team’s 30-year lease at Jobing.com Arena.

The NHL has offered $140 million and intends to keep the Coyotes in the desert for now.

Ice Edge Holdings, comprised of a group of Canadian and American businessmen, confirmed Wednesday that it would not take part in this week’s auction, hinting that it may try to buy the team at a later date. It had put together a bid for $150 million.

The agenda outlines two full days of activity before the court.

On Thursday, the judge will confirm the details of both the Balsillie and NHL bids and determine whether there are any other offers to be considered. Most of the remaining time has been put aside to discuss the issues surrounding relocation — with a heavy focus on what sort of fee the league could be entitled.

There’s already a rift on that front. Studies done for the NHL have put a proposed relocation fee between $101 million and $195 million, while a study for Balsillie by economics professor Andrew Zimbalist pegged the amount at $11.2 million to $12.9 million.

Balsillie’s lawyers have put forth a motion to exclude the reports from the NHL’s experts — a suggestion the league took issue with in a court filing late Wednesday.

“The NHL’s position has been (and remains) that it is premature to consider relocation issues, including a potential relocation fee,” it said. “In any event, PSE offers no legitimate basis to exclude the NHL’s expert reports.”

Former CFL commissioner Tom Wright will also be present for up to 40 minutes of questioning on Thursday. He prepared Balsillie’s application to relocate the team to Hamilton and has submitted expert testimony in support of the move.

The real intrigue should come Friday, when Balsillie and Bettman each take a turn on the stand. The agenda says each man will spend 30 minutes being cross-examined on “good faith purchaser issues” before being allotted 10 minutes for redirect questioning.

The two most notable players in this case have rarely been present for court proceedings since former Coyotes majority owner Jerry Moyes placed the team in Chapter 11 bankruptcy four months ago — although Balsillie and Bettman both attended a hearing last week, apparently shaking hands during a chance meeting in a washroom.

Even though the case is moving closer to an auction, Baum has yet to rule on some of the most important issues.

At the top of that list is whether the judge should overrule the 26-0 vote by the NHL’s board of governors rejecting Balsillie as an owner. The judge also hasn’t said if the team can be moved as part of the sale — a ruling that could be precedent-setting in professional sports.

Baum will award the team to either the NHL or Balsillie sometime after completing this week’s auction.

Whatever he decides, it almost certainly won’t be the end of the matter. The NHL has promised to appeal and seek a stay if the judge rules for Balsillie. Balsillie, meanwhile, said in a declaration filed Tuesday that he would appeal any adverse ruling.

.Meantime, the Ice Edge partnership says it decided to withdraw its bid because after being unable to reach a new lease agreement with Glendale — the same reason given by a group headed by Chicago sports mogul Jerry Reinsdorf when it pulled out last week.

The Ice Edge group, whose supporters included Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky, wanted to play five games in Saskatoon.

“We continue to strongly believe in the potential of the Phoenix Coyotes for the long term in Glendale,” Ice Edge said, “and therefore we will be examining our options after the conclusion of the bankruptcy auction process.”

The NHL says that, if it wins the bid, it plans to resell the team outside of the bankruptcy process, with the first preference to find a buyer to keep the franchise in Arizona. If that isn’t possible, the league says it will look to relocate the franchise.
