There is no shortage of options for skiers and riders who want to slide to music. (See headphone-equipped helmets, in-ear choices from Skull Candy, and DJ-style headphones from WESC, Technics and Sony.) Another one? How about a beanie with headphones by Aerial 7.

The company’s Sound Disk Beanie was released last month. At $59.99, the hat offers a mid-range option compared to similar products from Burton, Bonfire, The North Face and Volcom.

Aerial 7 Sound Disk Beanie The Disk Beanie has a hand-knit look and is stylish on the slopes. For audio, the headphones are sewn into the beanie but can be moved around. This is good when you want to fine-tune placement. But I found it to be a bit maddening to get the speakers in place at other times because the ear phones are between the hat itself and the liner. Since they’re connected, sometimes they go just where you want them. Other times they don’t and hence the frustration. Ideally they would be sewn into mini pockets, so they were always in correct, general vicinity and the placement would still be fine-tunable.

Once you have the small speakers situated, sound quality is good. The beanie “merges fashion and function with industry-leading acoustics,” claims the company. In my test so far, I have found this to be a mostly true remark.

Beyond music, the hat has a microphone and iPhone and Blackberry compatibility. It performed flawlessly with my Blackberry Curve. Talking on the phone, the sound was great on my end and folks on the other side said the same.

I’ve tried a few different in-ear devices for my cell phone, with varying results. The Aerial 7 Beanie worked as good as anything I’ve used — and the beanie fits my style better than an earpiece.

Today I saved a life.

It’s really a great feeling though I don’t think she’s aware of what happened.

I’m not a doctor, or a fireman, or someone who saves lives often which is really what makes it special, but I’m pretty sure she and no-one around saw what happened (except for the fireman who I’m sure is thankful).

In today’s world it looks like we all care too much for ourselves and pay no attention to what surrounds us.

I was walking listening to music from my iPhone and getting ready to cross a street when I heard a fire truck coming. I obviously stopped to see what was happening and if it was coming my way when I saw it was turning and coming towards my crossing. Suddenly, a beautiful blond girl, who was also listening to music but most likely at a much much higher volume, started crossing the street. As she was about to walk in front of the huge and fast-moving truck (making noise like crazy and full of flashy colored lights) I gently grabbed her by her shoulder. She stopped and gave me a weird look, something in between scared and mad, with a hint of “do that one more time and I’ll punch you!”. I looked at her, apologized, pointed at the truck, looked back at her, smiled and crossed the street.

We saw each other by coincidence a little later but neither of us said anything. God she was pretty!

It’s really a great feeling…

Today, was just a little bit too funny. I don’t mind funny, but funny when it starts to hurt your sides because you laugh and haven’t prepared your body yet. I haven’t done that in a while, when it actually HURTS to laugh. Even if it was immature things, they were still so funny.

I managed to complete the entire of my website unit in one day today. Talk about working hard? It’s the most work I have done in class since the beggning of term in September. Turns out, Trevor didn’t put the link up to upload the work. I needn’t have worked so hard. I’m kinda glad I did though, one less thing to worry about.

I got some new EARphones today. Exspect ones, with polished metal ends. I did a reccy of HMV, took note of all the ones they sold and then paid a visit to the Apple store to check the reviews. Turns out, these are better than the Skull Candy ones I was originally going to go for. They re very comfy and sound quite good. The wind is getting on my nerves with my Bose headphones. I can hear it whistling by and its pissing me off. Also, the really common fault with every earphones is that the 3.5mm jack connection, the wire next to it is coming loose. I have to be careful now. Balls

I was thinking last night (when I should have been sleeping) that I might not be able to afford to go to University in London. I can’t get a job whilst in London, because that means I have to stay there through the summer holidays, when I had every intention to return home for them. Therefore, I couldnt keep a job for more than the 8 months Univeristy runs for. Therefore, I wont be able to live on loans alone. Therefore, I might have to stay at home. I didn’t consider this earlier. Damn London for being so expensive. And damn me for the majority of my applications being in London! I should have done 2/3 instead of 3/2.

I’m looking forward to work tomorrow. Yipee. Although, I’m not entirely sure what to wear. It was really cold last time. :/

Im also SICK of seeing Rihanna in the news! AGAIN! Arghh! Shes annoying

Twenty years ago, headphones were shrinking, but they were still “headphones,” speakers designed to

Twenty years ago, headphones were shrinking, but they were still “headphones,” speakers designed to hang outside of your ears, suspended by a headband. Over the last five years, iPod users have fueled the popularity of “earphones” – headband-less headphones with smaller speakers, like the ones that come with every iPod – and a sub-category of “canalphones,” which fit partially inside your ear canals.

Today, earphones are a big and important business: Bose this week held a press conference just to apologize for problems with its first “in-ear headphones,” while companies such as Sennheiser and Shure have been rolling out not just individual new models, but rather entire earphone lineups all at once, to cater to increasing demand. Prices and features now vary tremendously. Apple sells earphones only for $50 or less, and some vendors focus exclusively on $50 to $100 offerings, while others now sell premium designs ranging from $150 to $900 in price. The wide variety of sounds, shapes, colors and prices has proved increasingly confusing for consumers – and tough to follow from month to month.

iLounge’s editors have been keeping up with all of these developments, testing tons of new earphones, and publishing our per-earphone findings in reviews. What’s been missing until now is our big picture perspective – a comprehensive look at the different options out there, designed to help you make the best possible choices for your budget and needs. To remedy that, we’re excited to welcome you to our brand-new Complete Guide to Earphones. This Part 1 is designed to acquaint you with all of your options; Part discusses the basics of earphone selection, Part helps you focus on factors that will match your personal needs, Part contains iLounge editors’ picks, and Part provides a summary with printable cheat sheets if you don’t want to read all the details.

Why Do Earphones Matter?

As long-term iPod users, our editors agree: there’s no accessory as important to your on-the-go iPod experience as a good pair of earphones. Just like the speakers that sit on your desktop, bookshelf, nightstand or floor, the tiny speakers in earphones can seriously muffle, distort, or otherwise change the way your music sounds. Despite Apple’s best efforts, its free iPod pack-ins can’t help but prevent you from hearing songs at peak quality – the iPod is capable of sounding so much better. Replacing your earphones with upgraded alternatives is the easiest way to transform your iPod from “good” to “amazing” in a matter of minutes.

Unfortunately, it’s easy to fall into certain traps when buying replacement earphones: instead of buying one great pair of $100 earphones, you might spend $20-$30 four or five times on cheap replacements that fall apart and never sound as good. And finding earphones that fit both your ears and your listening preferences – say, “balanced sound” or “a lot of bass” – isn’t necessarily easy. It’s critical to pair the right-sounding earphones with your ears, or else you won’t be happy with the results.

The Big Picture: Eleven Types of Earphones

There are at least eleven different styles of earphones currently in the marketplace, a daunting number for those who want to make a quick, smart purchasing decision. Thanks to the pictures and details below, however, it’s actually easy to compare all of the different options; understanding their features and differences is an important first step in making the right purchase for your needs.

Clip-On Earphones: Perhaps our least favorite earphone design is the “clip-on,” shown above. Most commonly sold for $50 or less, clip-on earphones hang relatively large, fabric-padded speakers from the tops of your ears, using plastic pipes and pressure to keep the music as close as possible to your ear canals. Like full-cup earphones, the large-sized speakers used in clip-ons have the potential advantage of delivering outer ear-filling, more believable audio to your ears, but their tendency to leak sound to neighboring listeners and frequently low-quality parts mean that they rarely reach this potential. They also tend to be uncomfortably heavy compared to earbuds, and audio professionals have noted that they’re more dangerous for your ears, as you need to turn up your iPod’s volume louder to hear them. Otherwise, they provide almost no isolation against outside noise. Users who hate smaller earphones may want to consider these anyway.

Standard Earbuds: Often shaped like upside-down musical notes, standard earbuds are the evolution of Sony’s now-classic foldable Walkman headphones – tiny plastic “buds” that are shaped to stay put inside the very edges of your ear canals, using smaller speakers than the clip-ons, and no headband or other reinforcement to keep them in your ears. Due to their size and lack of reinforcement, they can be uncomfortable for long-term listening, and can fall out if tugged; some companies sell separate cord managers (a fine option) or retractable cables (typically bad) to make this less likely. Standard earbuds tend to be lighter weight than Clip-Ons, and suffer from less sound leakage, so your neighbors will hear less of what you’re listening to. They are rarely sold for more than $50, but companies occasionally sell pairs for as much as $100.

Canalphones: The most recent and increasingly popular form of earphone is the “in-canal earphone” or “canalphone,” which is differentiated from standard earbuds by the even smaller size of its speaker and its use of soft, user-replaceable eartips that fit inside your ear canals. Almost always shipped with “fit kits,” canalphones generally rely on silicone rubber or foam tips to create a seal with your ear canal, blocking out external sounds and keeping the canalphones snugly in your ears. Used with the correct tips, canalphones will experience virtually no sound leakage, and can be heard at lower volume levels that are safer for extended listening. They vary in weight and cord design from model to model, but are often lighter than standard earbuds, and almost always lighter than clip-ons. Prices range dramatically, but most are sold at or below the $50 range; we’ve listed more expensive options in separate categories.

Over-the-Ear Earphones: Whether they’re based on earbuds or canalphones, these “over-the-ear” earphones use molded plastic, rubber, or metal mounting pieces to suspend miniature speakers in or immediately outside your ear canals. Sennheiser’s green, silver, and gray OMX70 Sport is intended for use in sports, using its moldings to keep earbuds on your ears during physical activities; Sony’s MDR-EX81 has a canalphone-sized speaker housing with a rubber ear mount for similar purposes. These designs almost invariably sell for $50 or less, and suffer from similar problems as standard earbuds and canalphones, augmented by their tendency to pull the speakers at least slightly away from an optimal position inside your ears.

Lanyard Earphones: Sold in versions for the iPod nano, original iPod shuffle, and generics for any device that can physically support them, lanyard earphones can include earbuds or canalphones for your ears, and are distinguished by their inclusion of a neck strap. The strap is generally made from fabric and intended to hold your iPod at chest level for easy navigation while you’re walking around. They sell for as little as $20, but Apple routinely charges $40-50 for its official versions.

Convertible Earphones: Convertible earphones are just beginning to appear in stores around the world. In one package, you get a pair of earphones – earbuds or canalphones – that can be worn alone, or reinforced by attachments included in the package. The reinforcing pieces wrap around your ears, head, or neck, providing support against cable tugging or exercise-related jostling. JBL’s Reference 220s are shown above, but their attachments aren’t that great; substantial further development is needed before this category has a chance of taking off. Prices are in the sub-$100 range.

Semi-Canalphones: Companies – particularly large ones – have been experimenting for several years with earphones that aren’t quite canalphones or earbuds, but instead sit somewhere in-between. Shown above, Sony’s metal MDR-EX90 design has an earbud-sized body with a canalphone-sized silicone tip at the end, while Bose’s much-maligned TriPort IE has an earbud-sized body with a big silicone tip. The intent of these designs is to offer superior audio quality than lower-priced canalphones, without using the expensive miniaturized drivers found in premium canalphones.

These hybrid offerings frequently result in polarized user experiences, with some absolutely hating their added size, and some liking it. They range in price up to $100.

Premium Canalphones: Designed mostly to appeal to users looking for far better than average sound quality, premium canalphones now frequently step up in looks, too. Unlike standard canalphones, which consist of one low-end speaker driver per ear, premium canalphones use higher-quality drivers – sometimes one, two, or three per ear.

They tend to rely on certain acoustic design principles, such as measured distances between their drivers and your ears, to improve sound quality, often resulting in longer bodies than standard canalphones, and the addition of multiple drivers generally makes them thicker, as well. In recent months, companies such as v-moda, Shure, and Ultimate Ears have been working to glamorize their most expensive offerings with true metal or metallic-painted casings, adding fashion to what used to be somewhat geeky high-end earpieces. Premium canalphones generally sell for between $100 and $500.

Custom-fit Canalphones: A special subset of premium canalphones are custom-fit designs, a category dominated by Ultimate Ears. As in the clear-bodied UE-10 Pro above, custom-fit earphones take audio drivers that could otherwise go into more compact, universal shells, and instead place them in plastic bodies that have been molded to the shapes of your ears.

Wireless Earphones: As with the convertible earphones above, wireless earphones are still in a state of testing and refinement. Now ranging from clip-ons to earbuds and semi-canalphones in design, wireless earphones are distinguished from wireless headphones in that they lack headbands, but they’re not truly “wireless” in that they’re always connected to one another with one wire. That aside, you can walk 10-30 feet away from your iPod and still hear its music, a benefit over wired headsets. Because they require at least a wireless audio receiving chip and a battery, they are currently larger, heavier, and more expensive than their wired equivalents, selling for between $100 and $300 with iPod transmitting hardware, yet not delivering sound as impressive as cheaper wired versions.

Waterproof Earphones: Brand new to the earphone market, waterproof earphones are an alternative to the waterproof headphones that came before. The only true earbuds we’ve received for waterproof testing are the ones shown above from FireFox Technologies; they’re canalphones with silicone tips and optional convertible ear mounts if you want to use them. H2O Audio’s earlier Waterproof Headphones sell for the same $40 asking price, and use both a neckband and large rubber tips to stay in place with your ears.

So the majority of girls aren’t whizzes when it comes to technology. If you are, all the power to ya

So the majority of girls aren’t whizzes when it comes to technology. If you are, all the power to ya.

Can you fix my iPod?

But no matter if we are clueless (“which end of the charger goes into the wall?”) or tech savvy, we all have one thing in common: we’re girls. And with that comes the need to accessorize, decorate and carry around gadgets that match our outfits.

So instead of running around campus with boring gray accessories, why not add some excitement to the tech side of your life with cute, girly gadgets? Hey, it might even help you down the road. When your computer crashes, the fact that it’s pink may just stop you from throwing it out the window. And if it doesn’t, well at least you’ll have a cute padded case to cushion the fall.

Flash Drive:

I can barely remember a pen when I roll out of bed in the morning, let alone the flash drive that has my essay saved on it. Now there’s no need to place Post-its everywhere I may happen to look (my shower caddy, my makeup bag, you get the deal), because you can’t miss this sparkling bracelet hanging in your jewelry box. Add flair to an outfit and bring your documents with you wherever you may go? Done and done.

Keyboard:

Okay perhaps it’s a little gaudy, but in the privacy of your dorm room, why can’t you indulge your inner girly girl? Staring at a word document for 6 hours will have you passed out on top of your keyboard, squares imprinted on your cheek, drooling onto the space bar. It’s just messy. A flashy keyboard will put a little excitement back into your homework (Okay, excitement may be a bit much, but the light from your lamp bouncing off the rhinestones will at least keep your eyes open) so you can get ‘er done.

Mouse:

After awhile the touch-pad on my MacBook really starts to bother me. You bump it, it clicks off the page. You have to hold down control to right click. You have to use two hands to do anything because you’re too challenged to maneuver this thing with just one. It’s annoying. And don’t even get me started on the little ball. How does anyone ever use that!? I’ve had enough and I’m ready for a real mouse. But, I don’t want just any mouse to plug in, I want a cute one. That sparkles. Yeah, it’s pricey, but it’s also the coolest thing to happen to my computer since, well, I got my computer.

Laptop Sleeves:

Lugging your laptop around campus sucks, but it sucks less if you do it in style. These sleeves are super cute, come in a variety of colors and are padded to protect your laptop from damage. (“Dad, I don’t know why it won’t turn on! It’s not like I accidentally drop-kicked it down the stairs or anything…”)

iPhone and Blackberry cases:

Pretty much everyone has a Blackberry or iPhone these days, and I refuse to be one of the automatons with my handheld glued to my hip. But I’m also not willing to give up BBM, so I’m going to make mine prettier so it stands out from the rest. Good plan, right? These cases are so adorable your phone will be more like an accessory than the addiction it currently is.

Earphones:

How freakin’ cute are these? I’ll take any opportunity I can to spruce up an outfit, and these headphones are like adorable earring! Plus I’m hoping the opportunity to sport these on an elliptical will get my ass off the couch. (Especially when my mom starts sending her fall treats my way.)

I’m a huge fan of Halloween. Not because I’m a fan of trick or treating or because I’m into anything spooky (I’m the biggest coward ever!), but because I’m a huge fan of dressing up. This year I took it too seriously and did not one, not two, but four costumes. I’m especially a fan of making my own costumes. It’s, like one of my professors said, a chance to be an Art Director and show your creativity.

American Apparel knows this, and is using people’s need to show their creativity as a way to promote their brand and the versatility of their clothes. In their yearly Costume Contest, customers upload their homemade costumes to show off and be scored. The prize is just a a$100 gift certificate, but there’s already 1,163 submissions for this past Halloween.

I’m not going to re-post any of these, but I’ve decided to show my favorite homemade costume made by one of my good friends.

Bang & Olufsen. A Danish company founded in 1925 who produce extremely high quality and beautifully designed electronic goods such as sound systems, televisions and telephones. They have always been at the front of the line, or very near the front, when it came to sound quality and the general experience of using their products.

Up until very recently, my only experiences of their products was either ogling them through the window of the B&O shop in Perth, or at the home of a family friend who had one of their television. They certainly could capture the imagination of the user whether or not they have used one of their products before. About 3 or 4 weeks ago, I decided to purchase my first Bang & Olufsen product. Something which I had been wanting for a long time, and something which I knew would be £90 well spent. A pair of A8 earphones.

When they arrived, there was the usual sense of excitement you get when unboxing or unpacking something for the first time. The anticipation, the tension, the unrivalled sense of proud ownership. Holding the earphones in my hands, you could tell alot of time had been spent on materials, and build. Absolutely brilliant. The moving mechanisms on them are extremely smooth too. The pneumatic type arm which extends the height of the earphone is like cutting butter with a blow torch, effortless. The same goes for rotating the earpiece and the top ear support component.

Alot of time was clearly spent making these earphones stand out. They are not the same as all the other earphones which are pretty much one size fits all and don’t, these ones really do fit all thanks to the huge range of movement in them.

Overall, I am pleased to say that they are one of the best purchases I have ever made, and they have been very well used over the past few weeks already. Here’s hoping that they last a very long time too, and may this be the first of many B&O products to come into my possession.

I went to Target today. I bought a neoprene laptop sleeve, microfiber cloths, bulbs for my lava lamp, a candle, earphones, and some canned air. Mind you, I did not buy it myself, I had an “adult” purchase it for legal reasons. Come on, I’m in college, they gave me a student loan, and I still can’t do anything, buy anything, or speak out of turn. (The out of turn thing was an exaggeration.)

Cool stuff, eh? Shut up. It’s my bloody money.

I filled up a balloon with air soft bbs and made a hackysack . . . or an INSTRUMENT OF PAIN upon unsuspecting victims. Great fun.

It’s time for more homework coding Java programs. Wheeee…

More than once I’ve whined about headphones that have cables entering both sides. On their own

More than once I’ve whined about headphones that have cables entering both sides. On their own, there’s always a piece of wire brushing against face, blowing in the breeze. In conjunction with LED glasses, they’re a cable tangle waiting to happen. Have you noticed how hard it is to remember to always take glasses and headphones off in the reverse order to how they were put on, to avoid looping the glasses through the phones?

While in-ear phones aren’t quite as problematic, because they don’t form a loop, I still find the wires annoying, and easily caught and pulled on when moving arms.

A simple solution, which I’ve noticed more and more of the iPod generation adopting, is to put the phones on from the back, so that the Y in the cable sits at the back of the neck. It’s surprising how many ways this simple innovation improves the headphone/glasses experience!

Cheers,
Craig

So it has been months. I have moved into my first apartment, midterms are killing me slowly and I have too much on my plate.

I saw Michael Jackson’s This Is It. It was amazing to see him at 50 putting in serious work. Unfortunately his labor could never come into complete fruition. He makes me want orange skinny jeans and glittery jackets.

I need a new pair of headphones. My jailbroken iPod Touch is amazing and I cannot listen privately. So on to my search for the perfect pair.

November is National Novel Writing Month – NaNoWriMo for short. What is it exactly? No sleep, a goal and a lot of coffee. 50,000 words need to be logged in 3o days, starting Nov. 1st. I hope to average 2,000 a day if not more. I have a rough outline: character details and most of the plot but balancing school with my personal endeavors will be difficult.

Also, I have purchased an independent publishing package from Lulu for my children’s book. I still need time to prep the pictures before posting for print and setting up a small scale publicity campaign – website, hooking up with school and libraries, etc.

Football – If you don’t already know, I am an American football nut now. Rugby is still better but it’s not here so I must make do. I am a huge Southern team supporter even though I’m out in California. I love the Atlanta Falcons – Matt Ryan and Tony Gonzalez (smart pick from the Kansas City Chiefs) <3 I love the Saints whom are doing terrific right now. I am anti-Cowboys after Romo slammed Atlanta last weekend. I like the SD Chargers, Steelers, Patriots, Eagles(yes I know, I volunteer for pitbulls and M.V.’s on this team), Giants and Titans. In Baseball the Phillies killed the Yankees but I missed the game. All that matters is Angel baseball anyway :p Ooo and basketball season is starting back up. In basketball I only like 2 teams – The Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls. I hope the Lakers defend the championship.

Until next time!

2 woofers, 2 midranges, and 2 tweeters. What more is there to say about the 6-driver JH Audio’s JH 13 Pro earphones? Oh wait, they’re set to be worth about $1100. The bass quality is considered to be “highly addictive,” with “resolution of fine detail” to back up its value rate. Hmmm, $1100 you say?

The Bang & Olufsen earphones are marked by their ability to create incredible sound, form the perfect fit for any ear, and their unique aesthetic design. The hard rubber curve that wraps around the flexes up and down to guarantee a secure fit while the sound piece can go 360 degree to find the perfect angle. Additionally, where the anodized aluminum meets to make a right angle, there’s an extension that can lengthen the height of the earpiece, allowing it to be extended up or down. Most earphones use in-ear designs to try to capture all the sound but the three levels of adjustment on the B&O earpiece allows the speaker to rest gently on the ear while achieving less sound loss (and reducing noise pollution). By resting on the ear, the earphones are so comfortable that it’s easy to forget you have them on. I bought these a few weeks ago and they cease to be amazing. On top of the quality of sound, Bang & Olufsen stands by the quality of the product by giving a three year warranty with purchase. Given the tendency of earphones to break, their real price is lower than the $160 sticker listed at their eStore.
