Due to popular demand, this Friday I’ve devoted The Fashion Office Recommends to what’s affectionately known as ‘Cheese’.  There’s some aromatic choices…

As much as i may have no shame where it comes to music, this challenge was particularly difficult.  After battling with Carly Simon’s, You’re So Vain (too cool), i toyed with Madonna and I’m going Bananas or Hanky Panky (close call) but eventually settled for East 17’s House Of Love.   Neither may be the most pungent nor embarrassing tracks, but it’s a fairly impressive compromise.  Whilst finding the video, Sartoriology was kind enough to send the video to another E17 track – It’s Alright.  It’d be a true shame not to share with you Brian Harvey’s trés fashionable hat and the boy’s exceptional choreography in action.

Soldiersailor: East 17 - House of Love

As skin cells fade from fluorescent to mild tan and gallons of mud are soaked away from tents, tipis and T-shirts, the grim reality of Glastonbury disintegrating away into the Somerset hills for another three hundred and sixty days becomes harrowingly apparent. The world of Worthy Farm was rocked by the devastating news of the demise of the King of Pop, the first major musical loss perhaps of this Millennium and bar the odd sour jab (largely spurted from the overtly foul mouth of the John Peel Tent’s druid compère), a sombre note resounds within Glastonbury’s walls. R.I.P. Michael Jackson.

Despite destructive downpours, storms sounding as if the sky was cracking/ God was chomping through a fair amount of Kit Kats (depending on your religious standing) and the fickle clay ground underfoot, this year’s festival went off without a hitch. Despite the Stone Circle not being half as ancient as it may appear, Wednesday night sees traditions upheld as a bleary-eyed bunch scale the hills, alighting lanterns and necking the finer concoctions of juice cartons hijacked by spirits before warm cider takes the reigns. And so with Glastonbury inaugurated, let the festivities begin…

Thursday was this year officially incorporated into the musical end of the weird and wonderfully skewed spectrum that Eavis has refracted through tie-die beards over the past few decades, as Maxïmo Park’s afternoon slot on the Queen’s Head stage draws a monstrous rabble. Their brand of lightweight intellectual indie is anthemic enough but maybe the recently reformed East 17 would have been a more bountiful kick-off. As spirits are gradually raised throughout the evening, so too is the eccentricity of those guitar-slingers signed away to prolong their hedonism for the sake of an extra show or two; Golden Silvers’ spangling funk-pop sees them sparkle more effervescently than ever, Kap Bambino kick and scream their way through a categorically cacophonous ramshackle show and Metronomy’s synced saxophonic blasts run rejoicing into the night with spanked bass lines. The dominoes are up and they’re condemned to fall.

I say that miss, but I haven’t seen it properly yet.  I’m on a train to York and the connection is so bad I can’t watch video and I’ve only seen it on an animating gif which one of our Banterpitters very kindly fashioned late last night.  As for why I didn’t see it live on ITV4 last night…I forgot it was on, and besides, the missus was really getting into the Eurovision semi-final.

If you don’t know to what I’m referring, our very own Tim Lovejoy got the chance to play in front of thousands at Anfield last night for the Hillsborough Memorial match, together with Liverpool legends and showbiz pals.  And from the looks of things, he had an inch perfect pass delivered to him, in front of goal, in front of the Kop, from about 7 yards out, with the keeper out of it.  It didn’t go in.  Enough said, although that’s not how the Banterpitters see it!  I’m certainly not going to comment further, this is an objective summary of what went on, as I would have hit the corner flag.

Tim did have the good grace to film himself in front of some very happy Anfield stewards after the match which you can see on today’s videoblog:

These are trying times for pop. The years of plenty, when any bundle of kids with slick haircuts and an even slicker PR campaign could ransack the top ten, are over. Even Girls Aloud, the standard bearers for superior pop music, can’t buy a number one for love nor money these days. Likewise, the McFly farewell tour and greatest hits package can’t be far off.

In such a climate, it’s perhaps puzzling that the likes of East 17, Five and Take That are re-entering the market, joining All Saints in the second chance saloon. Then again, maybe not: perhaps it’s a tacit admission that pop’s finest days lie in the past. But whether they’re in it for the nostalgia or the new kitchen, it’s All Saints who could most persuasively claim to have unfinished business to see to. On a four-woman mission to conquer the world when they appeared in 1997, they imploded after just two albums in a torrent of dysfunction and disinterest, leaving in their wake at least three classic singles and a sea of bewildered teenagers in combats.

From the first two tracks, single ‘Rock Steady’ and the ridiculously good ‘Chick Fit’, it’s clear Studio 1 is no valedictory stroll down Memory Lane. Musically, it’s shrewd, inquisitive and commendably now, taking in polished R‘n’B, dreamy ambience and even dipping its toes into the muddy waters of dancehall. Not everything works – Natalie Appleton’s ‘Flashback’ is the most compelling argument yet that backing singers should be seen and not heard – but when it all comes together, as on the glorious ‘Headlock’, it’s proof that some bands really do deserve a second chance.

They don’t write them like this anymore, half power ballad, half raved up anthem;). In the words of Alan Partridge;).

i don’t usualy get into the celeb reality shows, partly as i don’t usually know who the ‘celebs’ are. the last celeb bb scraped the barrel but ended up the most controversial yet.

i kind of hope standby contestant tony mortimer gets a go.

not sure she needed to do this, she just needs to do more work with people like groove armada. or get all the sugababes back together as a fivesome.  it’s also a bit of a risk, can see her being at the very least on the fringes of any controversy.

he’s 48! who knew. far less annoying than i remember on ‘the word’. not that he ever came remotely near honk voiced, self-deluded oxygen thief dani behr. her comeback has been thankfully squashed. did she forget how much everyone hates her?

is so far following samuel l jackson’s tried and tested ‘i heart the uk’ route. worst behaviour so far has been to fart in bed. is a serial reality show contestant and also has recently hosted an online cooking show, the fabulously titled ‘cookin’ with coolio’.

fresh from her divorce from andy scott-lee. since the split she’s been linked to matt di angelo, ziggy lichman and liam mcgough from 2007 bb. who i’m sure aren’t rubbing their hands together at the thought of revealing all to a few quality publications whilst she’s in the house. silly girl.

has released 11 albums. of which i have heard precisely none. i wonder what it was about jermaine’s experience two years ago, exactly, that made her want to participate??

Stuart Semple has curated a group show aptly named MASH UPS that opened on Tuesday night with The Subliminal Girls playing indie rock and wine flowing in the Kowalsky Gallery, the DACS gallery space in Farringdon.

Showcasing young artists with a similar message of late-noughties anxiety towards mass culture, using a mish-mash of different media, their art ties in nicely with Stuart Semple’s neon pop-art revival paintings. Two of which are exhibited here.

The new artistic generation of today like all mid-twenty-odds are the generation teetering on the edge of the new ‘communications world’. As Semple explains, “this generation is unique as it’s the last generation that will remember before the home computer, mobile phone, music video, mass marketing and instant archive that is the internet.”

Casting a nostalgic eye on a simpler time, when lime green cycling shorts were all the rage, Nicky Carvell uses life-size cutout images of East 17 boy band supreme as the focus of her work. Poor Brian who’s tragically humorous act of running over himself by his own Merc is immortalized in her work Peace from the East (Brian ran himself over).
Here, posing with hand on goatee, with his oversized baseball hat Brian is laid flat on the floor half covered by a large asymmetrical shape distinguished as the car by a Mercedes sign.

Heartthrob Tony is the subject of another work, where he can only be described as having been disemboweled – that is if multi-coloured tubes descending from his mouth are his internal organs. Nice. Who knows maybe this is what his insides really look like?
Smash hits would probably have something to say about this if it was still going.

Elsewhere there are the spaced out digital videos from Adham Faramawy, the industrial collages of Piers Secunda and the ‘post’ pop art paintings of Nathan James. All have used neon colour, which is a noticeable trend for artists right now, especially used in paintings. It is as if neon paint had just been discovered, like when day-glow fabric was invented – suddenly everyone wants to use it. Certainly this must have a connection to the nu-rave fashion trend, although it is just about coming to an end (well certainly if you live in Shoreditch it must be) it is alive and well in contemporary art. And as a 80s’/early90s revival, nu-rave brings us nicely back to what this exhibition is all about.

Secunda’s work uses only molded household and floor paint. Here the chunky pieces, bright pink, green and blue, are hung up on what look like coat hooks. Suggesting the absence of a core substance – the bits of paint being the veneer to something no longer present, his work suggests loss, but also a release from the normal restraints of painting. Interestingly Racheal Whitread has some of his work in her collection and you see a connection between their thought processes.

Nathan James’s paintings have the graphic design details in some areas like Fiona Rae’s recent stunning work, with stylized portraits of pouting women (perhaps Koons?) and Lichtenstein-esc cartoon letters running in the foreground. Very now.

A group show which sings to today’s generation of retro loving cyber hippies.

Sunt momente in care in aduc aminte de lucrurile frumoase din copilarie, iar astazi m-am gandit un pic mai mult la ce ma facea fericit atunci, cand fotbalul la Tanti Coana era in planurile zilei, si aruncatul dupa nuci la fel:P.De fiecare data cand imi aduc aminte de acele lucruri, mi le aduc aminte pe ritm de EAST 17.Nu stiu cat multi au auzit de aceasta trupa destul de veche, insa cu siguranta cei ce au auzit de ea au ramas placut impresionati.Cu toate ca la varsta aceea, adica pe la 6-7 ani, nu intelegeam prea multe, dar ma simteam atat de bine de fiecare data cand ii ascultam.Cu melodii precum “it’s all right”, “deep”, “do u still”, “Someone to love” etc, cu o voce ca a lui Brian, sau o minte ca a lui Tony, caraghiosi in felul lor de inceput, insa foarte seriosi in melodii si mesaje, EAST 17 erau cea mai ascultata trupa a momentului.Si acum dupa  ani buni de la despartirea lor de fiecare data cand ii ascult, reusesc a ma face sa ma simt foarte bine si relaxat, sa uit de probleme:d.Recomand oricarui amator de muzica a anilor ‘90 aceasta trupa, promit ca nu va dezamagi.EAST 17!!!

Ser du bakerst i høyre hjørnet der? Han karatefyren? Det der, det er en av de store drømmeprinsene fra 90tallet. Gary Barlows råere motsats. Som den talentfulle delen av East 17, rappet, sang, og danset Tony Mortimer seg inn i allskens ungpikehjerter. East 17 var større enn Take That, believe it or not. Tony Mortimer var hun moren din syns var en kjekk ung mann helt til TOPP-reportasjene hvor Brian Harvey (han breiale forrerst) stod fram som en real drugfiend. Makan.. Uansett, Tony forlot East 17, han hadde drukket nok gratis, og trengte en hvit måned eller to. Brian (som tross alt bare de teite jentene var forelska i), rasket med seg danserne og mekka E17 – r’n'b band, nå liksom. Det gikk jo som det måtte gå, rett i dass. Og Brians forsøk på å lefle med 2step og uk garage gikk vel heller ikke så bra. Han bor visst i huset til mormoren sin nå.

Imens slappet Tony av. Han kom seg gjennom spiseforstyrrelser og diverse mentale problemer, koste seg med familien, la på seg litt, og fikk sunne interesser av typen kjede-epost og reality-TV. På 90tallet uttalte han til diverse teenblader at han ikke likte TV eller film, ei heller politikk og å kjøre fort. Så sånn strengt tatt høres han jo ut som en relativt trøtt type. Han har dame, to unger og trolig et hvitt stakittgjerde. Og han lager musikk. Vil du høre?

Men dette var jo relativt kjedelig, ikkesant? East 17 som sådan er mye mer interessant, selv nå som 3/4 av dem er fattiglus med sterke dopabstinenser fra 90tallet.

I consider myself pretty anti-boyband, but I’ve been listening to the mid 90s British boy East 17 since a friend sent me some links…. apparently boybands were more acceptable in England…. so that makes it ok.
