This past Wednesday on what was the fifteenth anniversary of Tupac’s death I was treated to a wonder

This past Wednesday on what was the fifteenth anniversary of Tupac’s death I was treated to a wonderful theatrical production that chronicled his life.

The Tragedy of Tupac starring Damian Bailey and Stephanie LaCapra did not disappoint and was a huge success on its opening night selling out both showings. This 80 minute production captivated its audience from the opening monologue. It made the audience laugh and cry. This was in large part due to Bailey allowing the spirit of the late rapper/actor use him as a medium. It was as if Tupac had come back to life.

Fine performances by both Bailey and LaCapra were bolstered by a great supporting cast which included Channing Jackson (Farrakhan/William), Z. Joseph Guice (Manager/Prosecuting Attorney), Nowani Rattray (Shorty) and Dan Burkarth (Senator/Judge/Jeweler). Many of these actors performed very well in multiple roles which got my attention and my respect. It was evident that the hard work that was put in the rehearsals (see Behind The Scenes: The Tragedy of Tupac) paid off.

In a previous article I had mentioned that the goal of the production team behind this play is to bring it to Broadway. Although this goal was not met immediately the play will get a second run on November 2nd and 3rd for four shows again at the Triad Theater on West 72nd Street off of Amsterdam Avenue (just around the corner from Gray’s Papaya).

My advice to those who love small theater productions, fans of the late Tupac Shakur, and even those who have never seen a play is to go see this production. It is a must see and you’ll be doing a great thing by supporting independent theater in New York City. So if you have the time and the $25.00 available make plans to see The Tragedy of Tupac.
