Lilly was always a good eater, weaning was a pleasure. She’d try anything, and liked most things. The only thing she didn’t like was jars – which was fine by me because I loved cooking and pureeing and freezing and defrosting healthy meals from her, mostly made from my weaning bible – Annabel Karmel’s Complete Baby and Toddler Meal Planner. I loved it because I’d usually get an appreciative “Mmmmmmmmmmmm…. Mmmmmmmmmmm” as she ate.

Now she’s 21 months and lately she has become slightly more fussy – she turns her nose up at things more often – sometimes she eats half of a meal quite happily saying “yum yum” and “’licious!” then suddenly changes her mind and says “Don’t like it!”.

She’s also refusing to feed herself. “Mummy do it! Daddy do it”! I think it’s just an attention thing really.

But we both found it really funny yesterday, when she was tucking in to some tagliatelle with steak and mushroom for dinner. She went to great lengths to extract the little bits of chopped parsley and held them up disapprovingly.

“Little grass! Little grass!” she said.

Another entry diary of my conflicted eating. I did it again. I initially had plans to buy some cucumbers and young coconuts to eat/drink for lunch. Off I was on the way to the grocer from yoga and father called insisting me to go home first so the driver can take my two dogs to the salon. Lunch plan changed, that’s ok.. Or not. I started with half a mango, then it tasted good dipped in the guacamole I made yesterday. Finished the guacamole. I took out my cashew garlic gravy and pine ricotta cheese just to test if the mango would go just as well with them. Gravy was alright, not so much the ricotta. Had a few more mango+garlic gravy bites. Closed the lids and put them aside. I want something sweeter now. Pomelo! On the way to the fridge, my eye caught sight of the prawn crackers. UGH. Fine. Ate one. Two. Three. Enough. Ooh, what is that, almond crackers. I’ll have some of that too. Oh, what’s that tupperware of biscuits next to it? I opened the lid, smelled it. Coconut. Nice. Ate one. Back to the Pomelo. Ate the pomelo. I then eyed the housemaid who was cutting up papaya for my little brother. I started salivating over the papaya. So I took the remaining half of the quite-big papaya. Cut a slice widthway. Ate it. Want more. Another slice. And then another. I looked at the remaining end of the papaya. Ah, what the heck. I might as well finish it. I scooped out the meat clean off the papaya bowl. I stared at the damage while pressing one hand on my firm, filled up stomach. Realizing what I’d just done, again. I unbuttoned my denim shorts so my belly can have some space.

I may be raw, but I’m still a battling overeater.

As recent posts may have indicated, I am in the mood for poetry. And today, having run across a most beautiful piece by one of my favorite poets, I felt obliged to share it here.

Vultures

Like large dark
lazy
butterflies they sweep over
the glades looking
for death,
to eat it,
to make it vanish,
to make of it the miracle:
resurrection. No one
knows how many
they are who daily

Dying is, in most cases, a rather unpleasant thing. People hate to say goodbye, and knowing that you will not see your loved ones until they depart to the Elysian Fields themselves is anything but comforting. Death equals the ultimate departure, and most of us don’t like that idea.

Characters in role-playing games die too, but even though they’re purely fictional personalities, players will grow attached to them and hate to see them go. Situations like that are even crueler when the physical end of the character was caused by some trivial reason, like a really bad roll. Legend speaks of groups who broke up because of a terrible lame death!

To not let this happen to your group, there are two major things you can do: have clear “table guidelines” considering character death and utilize the rule system in order to prevent unnecessary deaths.

House rules about character death are an essential part of the plan to minimize permanent removal of a character. At my table, there is one thing that will NEVER lead to a character having to make the ultimate sacrifice: plain bad luck. No matter how messed-up a player’s rolls during the session are, this will NEVER lead to permanent death of his character. Mind you, it WILL lead to a very beaten-up, crying and in some games even deranged character…but he’s still alive! On the other hand, stupid deeds of the character, and by that extend of the player, are punished all that harder. I don’t mind killing off a character when I warned his player a dozen times that it might be a bad idea to rush into a ravenous horde of barbaric Orcs on his own.

Another legal reason for a character’s death is when his player wants it to happen. Up until now, this happened a single time in my games, namely in my earlier referenced Exalted chronicle. The character returned later as an undead antagonist who had some internal issues when being sent out to kill the player characters. This was all worked out in co-operation with said player, and the whole group enjoyed it. So don’t be scared to finish off a character when your players ask you to!

From a rules-wise perspective, many games provide mechanics to prevent death. Way back in the days, it was far too easy to die in a simple encounter against some dire rats. Today, mechanics like saving throws, immunities or karma-like points grant player characters a longer life span. Two quite contemporary games have a very creative take on how to deal with the Grim Reaper.

First of all, the Fourth Edition of Dungeons & Dragons gives characters in the higher echelons of the level cap certain “oh snap!” powers. Most Epic Destinies have a “Once a day, when you day…” feature, and give the character in question some way to return to life, in one form or the other. This can easily be adapted to other games where it would be fitting if player characters could arcane or divine ways to make the best out of dying.

The second title worth mentioning is Geist: the Sin-Eaters. As player characters in this game cheated death already once by striking a deal with a powerful ghost-spirit-hybrid, it doesn’t seem weird when seeing that they can cheat again, and again, and again. Should the Geist decide that the player character is still worth his time, he can bring him back to life once more, with some drawbacks. One of them is that the Geist still has to keep some balance, and instead of your character someone else has to die. Well, it’s not an easy life when you know that you are responsible for the death of the mother of four babies, right?

To sum it up, reducing the amount of TPKs or similar situations at your table is partially fluff, and partially crunch. Make sure your players are aware what will invite the Grim Reaper to your gaming table, and what will keep him away. Also, don’t be a jackass when you don’t have to. But, I guess, that is a quite general advice for your whole life…

Connichi 2009, Kassel. Wie jedes Jahr ein buntes Spektakel. Viele Cosplayer aus aller Welt kamen hier her.

Man sah viele Leute, die sich aufwendig kostümierten. Viele Cosplayer aus vielen verschiedenen Serien, wie: InuYasha, Soul Eater, Naruto, Mario Bros. und viele mehr! Es war eine wahre Augenweide. Auch ich habe dies’ Jahr gecosplayt.

Es wurde auch viele Workshops angeboten, u.A. ein Fan-Dub-Workshop von und mit Crash-Dub-Studio.

Auf jeden Fall werde ich mir wieder Ende Januar 2010 die Karte für die Connichi 2010 im September ‘10 vorbestellen! Ich freu mich schon drauf. Und wenn ich einen von euch treffen würde, noch mehr.

Party at SD26

SD26 is a brand-spanking new boite on Madison Square Park, and last night they (along with Eater) hosted a kickoff party for the New York City Food and Wine Festival. The space is pretty luxurious, most notably this amazing crystal curtain designed by the same group who did the crystal curtain at last year’s Oscars. It was a family affair of sorts, as Tony May, the owner, flew in a gaggle of awesome chefs from Italy (the Michelin-star types) to cook. Each chef contributed a special dish, like a creamy risotto with balsamico or a super fresh tuna tartare. In true Italian party style, everyone ended up in the (huge and gorgeous) kitchen, eating family style and telling stories. It was the perfect commencement to the annual food festival.

Me and my pet ghost

Finally I got my hands on a copy of Geist: the Sin-Eaters, and I have to say I am more than surprised by the awesome atmosphere of the game. Now, at first the idea of playing someone who returned from the brink of death by bargaining with an undead spirit didn’t speak to me. But as I read through the book, all the pieces came together and formed a most beautiful, yet morbid image in my head.

What enchanted me the most was the whole system behind sanctifying Krewes. To me, it feels like the Paradigms from the old Mage: the Ascension, mixed with a bit of Pack Totems from both Werewolf games. Also, Geist delivers an awesome description of the Underworld, one of the parallel dimensions that was short on accurate information. The upcoming Book of the Dead is all about that, so if you just want input about the Great Below, but don’t intend to play a Sin-Eater, you might want to wait for that product.

All in all, I can’t wait to run a game of Geist. Maybe I should start out with the introductory story? We’ll see. Of course, I’ll keep you up-to-date on Exceptional Success!

HAWKS NEST – OCEAN BEACH

Today’s photo was taken at Hawks Nest, the neighbouring town to Tea Gardens (where I currently live). I went down to the beach and decided to take a few shots of the coastal scenery close to where I live.

As can be seen, the weather was fantastic and the surf pretty small. The scenery however, was still pretty special I think. The water here is of great quality – crystal clear. Not a bad beach.

Necessary for a healthy EaterBeing a healthy eater, you are also educated and intelligent, which is a healthy diet. His food is not intelligent to know or to calculate grams of fat, or is it for studying labels and counting calories. Eating healthy is a balanced and moderate eating, healthy meals, consisting of at least three times a day. Healthy eaters eat different kinds of food, not limited to a specific type of food or food group. Eating healthy requires quite a bit ‘margin of maneuver. You can eat too much or too little, consume foods that are sometimes more or less nutritious. You should always fuel your body and your brain regularly with enough force with food, both your mind and body, and attentive. A healthy eater is a good problem solver. Healthy eaters have learned to care for themselves and make a meal with the decisions and wise discernment. Always greeted know what they eat, and know the effect they have on their body. If someone is not able to take control of their eating, but they are also likely to spiral out of control with other aspects of life. You might end up too much, talk too much, and going to bed later and later. We must always remember that restricting food in any way, always a bad thing. Eating healthy is a way of life, something you can do to improve your body and your lifestyle. If you have over your life better thought out, a healthy diet is just the beginning. Make life easier for you than around you and your family. Change EatAs As you may know, not fueling with the right nutrients can also affect your body and your overall fitness benefits door. Although a healthy diet is important, there are myths that affect performance if you listen to them. Here are some myth busters on healthy eating. 1. Working on an empty stomach. If you’re trying to hear a rumble in the stomach, rolling, tell you something. Without listening, are forcing the body to function without fuel. Before you exercise or not to eat any physical activity, always eat a small snack like an apple. 2. Relying on energy bars and drinks. Even if they are all ok once in a while, does not guarantee them, the antioxidant is necessary to prevent cancer. Fruits and vegetables are the best thing to do, because they are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and liquids are loaded. 3. Skipping breakfast. Skipping breakfast is never a good idea, as breakfast starts the day. The body needs fuel as soon as possible, and without it, you’ll be hungry all day. 4. Diets low in carbohydrates. Your body needs carbohydrates for your muscles and storing energy. 5. Eat what you want. A healthy diet and exercise does not give you an All Access Pass on what you want to eat. Everyone needs the same nutrients whether or not to exercise, and fruits and vegetables. 6. CaloriesAlthough thinning is not enough calories, you do not lose too quickly is never safe. What you should do is aim for 1 or 2 pounds per week. Always make sure that you are getting enough calories so that the body functions well. If you start to lose weight, eat too fast, eat a little ‘more. 7. Skip soda and alcohol. Water, milk and juice is the best drink for active people. You should drink often, and do not require the thirst that an indicator. Over time you will be thirsty, your body is already running a bit ‘too low. Change how you eat is always a big step towards healthy eating and affects how your body requires. The more you eat healthy, the better you feel. No matter how old you are, a healthy diet is something that we should try. If you give him a chance, you’ll see in no time at all, because it can change your life – for the better.
