Hace algunos post atrás, ya os hablaba de lo maravillado que me había quedado con mi descubrimiento de los llamados “e·book”. Bien, esta vez vuelvo con alguna novedad ya que, dado mi interés por el tema, en estos días no he podido evitar chafardear por la red (YouTube y derivados)  sobre estos magníficos aparatos.

Aquí os adjunto un vídeo, a mi parecer bastante interesante, del nuevo e·book de Plastic Logic que se presentó durante la séptima edición de la conferencia D: All Things Digital (es una conferencia que organiza el Wall Street Journal, desde 2003).

Básicamente me llama la atención porque, después de conocer un poco más lo que es el Kindle (ver post ”El chico que soñaba con un gadget y un libro digital“), estoy seguro de que ha nacido un nuevo competidor, tanto para éste como para el Sony eBook Reader. Así, parece que poco a poco hay cada vez más competidores en un “nuevo mercado” que apenas era pensable hace dos años atrás.

De todas formas, creo que tanto Apple como Amazon cuentan con una gran ventaja que no tienen el resto de “jugadores”: una legión de fans muriendo por comprar todos y cada uno de los productos que lleven una manzanita xerografiada, ama y señora de las tiendas de aplicaciones móviles (por poner Apple como ejemplo). 

De todas formas, me gustaría señalar algunas de las características principales que más me han llamado la atención. Si alguien quiere más información, todo está en esta página de  D7: Demo. Así, en resumen:

El aparatito tiene una pantalla táctil (touchscreen) que no tiene teclado. Se puede cambiar de página con movimientos táctiles (algo a lo que cada vez se recurre más y que en un gadget de estas características obviamente no podía faltar! – aunque realmente me recuerda muchísimo a los típicos movimientos de nuestro maravilloso iPhone (¡sí, de la manzanita!).

Por otro lado, se pueden leer archivos .pdf’s, .doc (Word) y .ppt (Power Point).

Y finalmente, se podrán comprar libros (hablo en futuro porque no saldrá a la venta hasta el próximo año) mediante conectividad 3G y Wi·Fi – y este sí que es un punto a favor para Plastic Logic frente a Amazon con su Kindle.

En resumen, habrá que esperar a ver cómo se desarrolla este nuevo mercado del libro digital. Me encanta.

Ci sono segnali rilevanti che fanno pensare ad una rivoluzione dietro l’angolo in campo culturale. E’ quella degli ebook readers,che stanno per invadere letteralmente il mercato dei libri. E’ tutto pronto e il boom è imminente. Molto probabilmente succederà ciò che è accaduto con i telefoni cellulari,ma questa volta in campo strettamente culturale. Al di là dei luoghi comuni,ormai figli del passato,quella degli ebook readers sarà una faccenda del tutto positiva. Innanzitutto,viene eliminata,grazie alla tecnologia e-ink,quella pecca che riteneva gli ebook non buoni per la lettura e che faceva giustamente preferire,a priori,la tradizionale lettura dei libri,per così dire,”in carne ed ossa”. Ma per agevolare le esigenze del lettore,i nuovi ebook sono stati perfezionati,con tanto di copertina e custodia in pelle da sembrare dei veri e propri libri. Ma non è solo di ciò che si deve parlare. La rivoluzione ebookiana porta con sè tante speranze,in primis quella che si potrebbe definire come una sorta di liberalizzazione della cultura. Eh gia! Perchè gli ebook readers portano con sè quella potenzialità che forse era permessa solo a pochi, in quanto la comodità intesa come  maggiore accessibilità sia economica che numerica,faciliterebbe un’allargamento dell’orizzonte culturale,quello derivante dalla lettura. Ma tutto questo non sarebbe potuto accadere senza la quantità immensa di libri(soprattutto di pubblico dominio) della libreria di google,dai più antichi a quelli un pò meno antichi scaricabili anche in formato PDF Una operazione,al di là delle critiche,davvero utile. Infatti,così facendo,la rivoluzione degli ebook readers, si potrebbe davvero paragonare alla grandiosa utilità del cosiddetto “open source” in campo informatico. Ma qui non si parla di accessibilità alle tecnologie informatiche,ma acessibilità ai mezzi di cultura,quali sono appunto i libri. Ma non è finita qui;l’abbattimento dei costi infatti aiuterebbe,tra le altre cose,e non di minore importanza, a ridurre  il costo dei libri scolastici che gravano ogni anno sempre di più,e senza rilevanti interventi istituzionali volti a contrastarli. Ma per quest’altro ulteriore passaggio occorre maggiore tempo,anche perchè senza un adeguata sincronia itituzionale il progetto prettamente “scolastico” non  potrebbe certamente partire,ed anzi,sarebbe forse un pò dannoso. Insomma,per la scuola forse è ancora troppo presto!

Per quanto riguarda il resto invece,l’arrivo della tecnologia e-ink (sembra infatti di stare proprio davanti ad un foglio di carta) è una vera e propria benedizione. A tutto questo bisogna aggiungere la leggerezza dell’applicazione,la possibilità di sottolineare,in alcuni modelli,con un pennino e di annotare. Inoltre, un singolo lettore elettronico potrebbe contenere migliaia di libri,una vera e propria biblioteca sempre a portata di mano. Inoltre,alcuni di questi libri,quelli non coperti dal copyright,e cioè di pubblico dominio(e che alla fine sono sempre i più importanti), possono essere scaricati dai siti appositi  gratuitamente!  L’unica cosa un pò negativa è ancora il prezzo dei lettori. Quello più economico finora si attesta ai 189$.

Tutto è pronto e ormai,secondo indiscrezioni che si basano su progetti di quasi tutte le case elettroniche,la rivoluzione sta per cominciare.

DIE Entdeckung für mich war (dank Facebook-Wiki in Folge der Einführung des neuen Facebook-Share-Buttons) die Anleitung, wie man das Teilen der Inhalte der eigenen Website für Facebook noch effektiver machen kann.

Da Facebook derzeit noch einige Änderungen in Arbeit hat, wird spätestens Anfang 2010 eine aktualisierte Fassung meines eBooks erscheinen. Inzwischen folgen hier im Blog natürlich weitere Artikel über aktuelle Veränderungen.

Torniamo a parlare di ebook reader dal momento che il mercato si sta piano piano scaldando: continuano ad uscire nuovi modelli e ogni tanto compaiono futuristici prototipi in giro per la Rete.

E’ di questi giorni la notizia che il modello di casa Barnes&Noble, il  nook, è andato sold out e bisognerà attendere il prossimo anno.

Ecco come, con ogni probabilità, evolverà la situazione:

Barnes & Noble says customers ordering a Nook will receive their devices the week of Jan. 4. So that stockings are not left completely empty, the bookseller will furnish buyers with a special holiday certificate — presumably with real ink on actual paper. (Bits)

Alhamdulillah, sekarang aku bisa bikin blog baru lagi. Kali ini tentang hal penting yang belum mendapat banyak perhatian, yaitu keberadaan buku-buku online.

Saat ini, majalah online sudah ada banyak. Begitu pula koran online. Tapi bagaimana dengan buku online? Tampaknya masih kurang mendapat perhatian.

Padahal, buku itu tak kalah pentingnya daripada majalah atau pun koran. Bahkan, mungkin buku itu lebih penting daripada media massa lainnya. Sebab, melalui buku, kita dapat menyerap ilmu secara relatif utuh, tidak sepotong-sepotong.

Apalagi kalau buku-buku online itu berkualitas tinggi dan sekaligus gratis, seperti pinjam buku di perpustakaan. Asyik, ‘kan? Nah, itulah antara lain yang mendorong diriku membangun blog baru bernama Buku-buku Islami Online: buku2islami.wordpress.com

Selama ini, kita sudah mengenal buku digital yang seringkali disebut sebagai eBook yang berformat file (berukuran besar) dan perlu di-download. Bagaimanapun, eBook dalam format seperti itu ada banyak manfaatnya. Namun kini, keberadaan buku online yang langsung online (disamping bisa di-download pula) tentunya akan lebih memenuhi kebutuhan kita untuk membaca buku-buku yang berkualitas.

Bagaimana menurut sampeyan?

Tenho visto muitas matérias sobre o Kindle, com opiniões sobre o aparelho e o futuro do livro, em especial sobre o futuro do negócio livro. Eu acredito que muita gente ainda não entendeu, ou não quer entender. Por outro lado, já tem gente se adaptando, se preparando para o futuro.

Um breve background sobre mim, que pode te ajudar a entender meu ponto de vista:

• sou aficionado por livros, em especial de negócios
• eu adoro ler, estudar, aprender – temas de meu interesse
• gosto muito de tecnologia, em especial de gadgets, como iPhone, laptop, máquina fotográfica digital, e claro, Kindle
• trabalho com informação (no agronegócio), usando internet
• acredito muito no potencial da internet, de levar informação ultra segmentada de forma instântanea

O que gosto no Kindle (e de outros leitores de ebooks):

• tem muitas das vantagens de um livro: fácil de carregar, leitura confortável para os olhos, confortável para ler na cama, no sofá
• tem muitas das vantagens da internet: acesso imediato a informação, sem custo de frete, sem risco do produto esgotar
• está tornando muito mais fácil, rápido e barato editar um livro
• está tornando mais fácil para novos autores difundir seu trabalho (e até ganhar dinheiro com isso)

O que ele pode mudar no negócio livro

• a agregação de valor das editoras vai mudar, pois toda a logística de impressão e distribuição deixa de existir
• a barreira de entrada para novas editoras diminui muito
• a possibilidade de autores editarem seus livros independentemente, sem uma editora
• maior facilidade para editoras ultra segmentadas surgirem (e darem certo)

O que se pode esperar de mudanças no Kindle (e outros leitores de ebook):

• a concorrência vai aumentar, com novos modelos, com novidades, com preços mais baixos
• hoje o Kindle é muito “travado”, com DRM nos livros, isso deve mudar rapidamente
• a possibilidade de se emprestar um livro eletrônico, como já acontece com o Nook, da Barnes&Noble, vai se tornar mais comum
• editoras vão lançar seus livros em vários formatos, como a O’Reilly Media já faz (na minha opinião a editora que melhor entendeu esse fenômeno), para Kindle, iPhone, PC e outros
• os livros vão baixar de preço, inclusive com versões gratuitas (por tempo limitado, em versões limitadas, etc) como o Chris Anderson fez com seu livro Free, com sucesso
• a rentabilidade das editoras tende a ser mais apertada, em especial das que se negarem a enxergar a situação atual
• lançar o ebook antes pode ser uma estratégia de muito sucesso, mais rápido e barato, dependendo do sucesso, se imprime com uma tiragem maior ou menor

Sobre pirataria, me lembro de uma frase do Tim O’Reilly que disse algo do gênero: há uma coisa pior que pirataria, é o desconhecimento. Ele defende que os autores e editores (ele é provavelmente o editor mais famoso de livros de tecnologia nos EUA) entendam a pirataria como uma taxa/imposto progressiva. Você vai ter pirataria proporcional ao seu sucesso. Em outros casos, a pirataria pode até ajudar a divulgar seu produto. Ele é o editor que abraçou a ideia do livro como produto digital, por exemplo, lançou a cerca de 10 anos um serviço de assinatura mensal que te dá acesso a todos os livros da editora dele. Se chama Safari books.

Concorrentes:

• Outras livrarias vão lançar, como a Barnes&Noble, com seu Nook
• Empresas de eletrônicos vão lançar, como a Sony que já tem o seu, sem grande sucesso
• Empresas de mídia vão lançar, nos EUA o Murdoch já falou sobre isso. Quem será o primeiro no Brasil?
• A Apple pode (deve) lançar um tablet, computador de colo, algo como um iPhone do tamanho de um laptop, que é previsto como um grande concorrente do Kindle
• Outras empresas, como o Techcrunh, um blog muito famoso que cobre startups nos EUA, que tem até um protótipo há meses, o Crunchpad.

Duas empresas brasileiras que estão lançando livros no formato eletrônico (Kindle inclusive):

• Loja Singular e Singular Digital (pelo que entendi, uma empresa do Grupo Ediouro)
• Bookess (uma startup, que promete)

Recently I’ve had requests for “my first book,” which most everyone thinks is a book of poems and short stories, titled “Break The Cycle – Volume I” that is due out in April 2010. What few people know is that my first book was actually an ebook that I wrote a few years ago while I was participating in Mitch Meyerson’s and Michael Port’s online publishing class, The Product Factory. The title of the book was “Success: Take One – How To Achieve Your Dreams Without Going Broke!” It had eight chapters:

I never promoted the book because I thought it was incomplete. How could I write a book about success if I wasn’t a multi-millionaire or living the life of my dreams? So, I printed it out and put it in the back of the Bible my grandmother passed on to me. I forgot all about it until today.  It’s amazing what a few years of focused personal development can do for you. I now realize that just because I’m not rich (yet) or because I may not be what some would consider “successful” doesn’t mean that I don’t have anything of value to offer. After a few years of soul searching, I realize that if even one person can benefit from a path I have traveled or an experience I have learned from, I owe it to my existence and humanity to share it.
