By Scott Walls

In the past week alone, two readers have asked about UNSPSC codes (universal product coding scheme) and Don Sweeney, Partner at Emerging Solutions, forwarded a related question he noticed via a Yahoo Group seeking assistance re UNSPSC codes as PeopleSoft categories. For these reasons and because UNSPSC codes offer amazing value, I thought it would be helpful to write a quick BLOG about UNSPSC codes, their government equivalent NIGP codes, and three examples of how these codes can be very useful to today’s best in class procuring organization. For more information, please email me directly at scottwalls@srm-plus.com.

UNSPSC & NIGP Codes

Definitions via Wikipedia:

UNSPSC – the acronym for the United Nations Standard Products and Services Code. UNSPSC is a coding system for the classification of both products and services for use throughout the global marketplace. It is managed by the GS1 US, which is responsible for overseeing code change requests, revising the codes by interfacing with industry projects, issuing regularly scheduled updates to the code, communicating with members, as well as managing special projects and initiatives as determined both by the UNDP and by member requests.

NIGP – The NIGP Commodity/Services Code is an acronym for the National Institute of Governmental Purchasings Commodity Services Code. The NIGP Code is a coding taxonomy used primarily to classify products and services procured by state and local governments.

While I have known about UNSPSC codes for much longer, their adoption has picked up dramatically over the past 5 years. I am seeing NIGP more and more now that the predominant amount of work being sold is in the United States government arena. From a 10,000 foot level, I attribute the rise in popularity of these universal coding mechanisms to the need to identify common items and their attributes among buyers, suppliers, and third-parties. For more on buyer, supplier, third-party connections, see Supply Integration Solutions.

3 Major Advantages Offered by UNSPSC/NIGP Codes

Because all serious marketplaces and suppliers provide this information for free and it is relatively accurate, here are a few great ways to take advantage of your procurement partner’s efforts. The following three sections provide a high level overview of the advantages offered by universal coding schemes such as UNSPSC and NIGP:

Assign set downstream defaults with little to no effort. When using an external organizational marketplace (SaaS marketplaces, AKA content management, are a best of breed must for every company) these values come back automatically assigned and all setup/maintenance is performed by the marketplace/supplier. All marketplace items are assigned a UNSPSC code. The SRM application uses those codes to set its downstream defaults. Here are a few valuable examples

Use universal codes to set the asset profile – determine depreciable life, capitalization, and more

Use universal codes to set the asset tracking information – require receiver to tag and note ID in SRM app

Use universal codes to set a default GL account – requester gets the correct GL account without any accounting knowledge

Use universal codes to set the NIGP Code (Periscope and others translate UNSPSC to NIGP codes)

Real-time acquisition (requests/purchases) reporting with little to no effort. Again, when using an external organizational marketplace, the purchasing/reporting categories (in PeopleSoft these are called categories and required on ALL requisitions) within the SRM application can be setup to mirror the UNSPSC/NIGP codes. Using the SRM application to set the category, or a portion of it, to the SRM category allows for an easy, free classification for all acquisitions.

Identify items for special routing automatically. Items requiring imaging, special workflow, safety concerns, etc can be identified at request, purchase, receipt, etc. via their UNSPSC/NIGP code.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that UNSPSC has some complications; which version suppliers use, keeping current, cross referencing. However, the benefits almost always outweigh the related costs.

At any given moment in time, there are a number of individuals who are searching the internet in hop

At any given moment in time, there are a number of individuals who are searching the internet in hopes of finding a legitimate money making opportunity. Many of those individuals are at-home parents, others are retired, and some just want to find a better opportunity. If you are interested in making money, in a relatively easy way, you are advised to further examine private label resell rights. It may very well be the opportunity that you have been searching for.

Private label resell rights are typically offered by the product’s creator. Although these individuals may have the time and the knowledge needed to create new products, most do not have the time or the knowledge to sell those products. Instead of selling their own products, many rely on others to do the selling for them. When you obtain the resell rights to a private label product, you are buying the rights to resell that product. These products most commonly include software programs and e-books, but they are not limited to just those products. After the transaction has taken place, you will then be responsible for selling the product. In fact, you will make money from each sale that you successfully process.

If obtaining the private label resell rights to a particular product sounds like an amazing business opportunity, you may be right. However, with all other business opportunities, it is important to remember one thing; not all opportunities work for everyone. This means that although someone you know may be able to turn a profit buying the resell rights to an e-book or a software program, you may not necessarily be able to. Before investing in a private label product, not matter what that product is, you are encouraged to familiarize yourself with the advantages and disadvantages of private label resell rights. This step is important to determining whether or not this business opportunity can help you make money online.

The biggest advantage to private label resell rights is that you get to make money selling a product that you didn’t even create. In some cases, you are even allowed, and maybe even required, to alter the work, but then you can claim it as your own. This means that overnight you literally could become a freelance writer or a software developer.

Another advantage to private label resell rights it the flexibility you will have. Each time you sell the product, which you have acquired the resell rights you, you will make money. The amount of money you make will all depend on how many hours you work. These hours could be as much or as little as you want. In fact, many private label resell buyers are able to make money selling their products with only working a few hours a week.

While there are advantages to obtaining the resell rights to a private label product, there are disadvantages as well. To make money, you must able to find a product that will sell. Unfortunately, too many resell right buyers do not research a product before buying it. Those individuals usually end up losing money because they purchased a product that was poor in quality or one that couldn’t sell. Of course, this disadvantage doesn’t have to be one. You can learn some great tips on how to find and resell products at www.plrtips.com where you can download a 2 hour free audio course on the subject. All you need to do is research each product before agreeing to purchase it. This research should enable to make money, not lose it.

The above mentioned advantages and disadvantage, to buying private label resell rights, are just a few of the many. Despite the fact that there are additional advantages and disadvantages, most people find that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages; thus, making this a profitable business venture.

Dubai Air Show 2009, the 11th and largest in the biennial series with 890 exhibitors from 47 countri

Dubai Air Show 2009, the 11th and largest in the biennial series with 890 exhibitors from 47 countries as well as 130 aircrafts on static display, concluded yesterday with an onsite order book of over $US13 Billion. Not bad for a recession, but significantly less than in 2007. It remains nonetheless a very important event for the industry, and as such draws a lot of attention from all corners of the world. Many get a chance to experience the show in person, but more follow the developments online. Here is my review of this year’s coverage on the web.

AEROSPACE & DEFENSE MEDIA

Although the show was well covered by worldwide mainstream media, the top three aerospace and defense magazines dedicated significant resources to the event. Aviation International News, Aviation Week and Flight Global each created a landing page dedicated to the show on their websites. Flight Global reprising and expanding on its great coverage at Paris (see “Paris Air Show Online Coverage”), provided a much more esthetically pleasing experience than the other two organizations.

However, many will argue that it is the content that is important. But judging strictly by the numbers, Flight Global also comes out ahead in this area.

Although overall less online content was generated than at Paris, some of my favorites were there. Flight Global’s daily video wrap-up by Mary Kirby (@RunwayGirl) and Jon Ostrower (@FlightBlogger) is always excellent, although they quit a day early to my great surprise and disappointment. Flight Global also brought out a full WYSIWYG version of their daily publication, catching up to Aviation Week which has had theirs at both shows. AIN did not provide theirs.

I feel that AIN was the least “Online” friendly of the three. Aviation Week did not seem to improve from Paris. In fact, I feel they went backwards, as they had only 1 video and a much disorganized Twitter presence (see below). Also, they decided to place a full screen Airbus A380 advertising as an entry page for most of the show coverage which was extremely annoying.

All in all, it was clear that Flight Global came to the show with a well conceived online coverage plan. Their online editor, Michael Targett, confirmed that they put a significant amount of work into their strategy. The web traffic numbers should show that it served them well.

I think Flight Global has set the bar for the other media organizations and the race is now on for Singapore just a few months away. For that show, I would like to see the news segregated in “channels” (e.g. BizAv, Defense, Space, and Commercial) and more online interaction with the trade visitors and exhibitors before and during the show. Singapore Air Show should also have very good cell phone data coverage, so smart phone applications might make their appearance. By the way, Flight Global has already released a primitive iPhone app.

TWITTER STREAM

After Paris, AUSA and NBAA, Dubai was the fourth major A&D show where Twitter was used. The organizers, Aviation Week and Flight Global all agreed on a (short) hashtag for the show (#DXB09) back in late October. From November 10th to the 19th, it was used in over 1100 posts by more than 180 unique contributors. It is half the contributions from Paris and five times less than at AUSA. However, I suspect this has to do with the availability of cell phone data coverage more than any other factor.

Looking at the top 10 contributors during the show, @RunwayGirl and @FlightBlogger, both from Flight Global, dominated the stream with 112 and 73 posts respectively. Flight Global accounted for 4 of the top 10 contributors.

The other twitter accounts belong to a variety of users, all very passionate about Aerospace: @Tangosix is a Serbian aviation journalist; @DefenseAviation links to an impressive blog managed by a student from the Mangalore University in India; @InflightCuisine reports on behalf of an online community of over 600 in-flight catering professionals; while @obsalah is the Head of Quality Assurance and Safety for the local company Al Jaber Aviation and has almost 1900 followers. In fact, the top 10 contributors count a total following of over 11,000 accounts. This audience does not include the numerous other people simply following the shows’ #DXB09 stream.

Aviation Week seemed disorganized in their use of Twitter. @AviationWeek and @AvWeekMorris posted very little, but most importantly, they did not use the event hashtag thus missing the majority of the audience. As always, but again from thousands of miles away, @AvWeekBenet carried the torch for the organization by providing a steady stream of updates finishing 15th in the contributor ranks. She also posted on her personal account (@BenetWilson) and was assisted by @ThingsWithWings who posted about various elements of Aviation Week’s Dubai coverage including links to Mike Vines’ great photos. @AvWeekJobs re-tweeted two of these photo links continuing to post “ThingsNotAboutJobs” on this account (Am I the only one that is bothered by this?). As an organization, Aviation Week produced 25 online stories, 29 blog posts and 4 days’ worth of editorial content for the show daily news. Yet, they only posted (collectively) 57 updates on Twitter. What is wrong with this picture?

Another disappointment was the organizers (@DubaiAirShow) participating only timidly before and during the show. They managed 6 tweets in 4 days; two of them re-posts from other contributors. I think they could have done better (see below).

The rest of the industry was equally shy. Honeywell (@HON_Carrie and @HON_KC) contributed the most (25 posts), while @Fly_cessna and @PrattAndWhitney basically checked in. @Airbus, @BoeingAirplanes, @NorthropGrumman, @BAESystems, @ThalesGroup and @RaytheonCompany were noticeably absent from the show stream.

Except for Flight Global, I think the concept of Twitter as a sort of “headline news ticker” that draws people’s attention to the rest of the content provided in blogs and websites seems to still be lost on most A&D companies.

THE ORGANIZERS

F&E Aerospace continues to do a remarkable job with the physical logistics of putting such an enormous event together. The event’s website contained a wealth of information for Exhibitors, Journalists, and Visitors. They did make an attempt at social media by adding a Twitter account, a LinkedIn group and a social media “Share” button, but these felt like afterthoughts with not much strategy around them. During the show, the website was updated with the official press releases and a few photos. I think a great opportunity was missed.

DubaiAirShow.aero should have been the absolute hub for all online activity before, during and after the show. The organizers are in the unique position to “mash up” content from all the media and the exhibitors in one place. They can share the excitement in the run-up to the event and provide its heartbeat during. Here are three ideas (Are you listening Farnborough?):

Stream information, pictures and video live from the show. Post time-lapse pictures of the exhibit hall construction. Provide live webcam of the press conferences. Update the number of visitors and the onsite order book as streaming data feeds on the home page. Show live video of the flight demos. Make the site fun and addictive so online visitors use it as their central hub well before the event and for its duration. I guarantee it will make more people want to attend next time.

Collect and publish each exhibitor’s website, twitter, and RSS information. Use this information to provide a centralized but segmented news feed (e.g. Corporate, Defense, etc…) directly on the website. Provide a twitter window for the #DXB09 feed.

Create interactive features before and during the show: voting on the flight and static displays by visitors; “must visit” exhibitor lists ranked by journalists; interactive forums about the local hotels and restaurants.

In a global economy, events such as the Dubai Air Show truly have a worldwide appeal. “Attending” the show online will never replace being there in person. However, better online coverage will expand the reach of the organizers and exhibitors, augment the business buzz, and definitely create the desire to be there in person next time. Next up is Singapore, then Farnborough. Let’s see if they learn from Paris and Dubai.

Apparently the best new idea at TechCrunch50 this year was a new way of finding Bob the Builder. The elevator pitch for the revolutionary and ultimately prize-winning RedBeacon web site went something like this.

“Simply type whatever service you’re looking for (be it plumber, gardener, or hair stylist), and the site will present a list of recommended service providers in your area.”

I know what you’re thinking: “Hang on isn’t this the Yellow Pages?” and, “Aren’t online directories a dime a dozen?” and also, “Hasn’t Google rendered business directories obsolete?” … “So what am I missing? Why all the excitement?”

The key word of course was referral. But let’s put those thoughts aside and rethink the opportunity. Let’s take a look at what the Yellow Pages could have become if the Strategic Planners of 1995 had been tasked with the BIG Problem of owning the future of business referrals.

Step one was easy. All they had to do was put the Yellow Pages directory database online and they achieved that.

Step two should have been to offer every listing in directory a Free “Yellow Pages” web page (e.g. Homestead). That would have allowed the customers to create their own web presence. This would have kept their customer’s close and added value to the relationship. A new revenue stream could have been created by offering customers the option to purchase an expansion package. Thereby extending their Yellow Pages branded web page into a tailored business web site . They should have also provided each business listing with an @yellowpages email address (e.g GMail or Hotmail). All this would have driven more business to their customers and added extra value to the Yellow Pages brand. Now, they could have done this in 1995, but let’s say this should have happened by no later than 2002. (By then the writing was well and truly on the wall for the online directories).

Step 3 should have been to offer the email and personal web page to everyone listed in the White Pages. Again they could have done this in 1995 and it should have been in place by 2002.

Step 4 should have been to allow business owners to enhance those DIY web sites with front office and back office eCommerce modules. They should also have provided traffic analytics. Plus online credit card and bill payment services. Again these could have been offered on a pay per plugin. This strategy could have been in place in 1998 and should have been in place no later than 2005.

Step 5 should have been to introduce some type of referral, review or recommendation system into the network. Again this strategy could have been in place in 1998 and should have been in place no later than 2005.

Step 6 should have been to expand the platform to include mobile phones messaging and browsing as part of the service. Again this could have been implemented as early as 1995 but let’s say it should have been in place no later than 2005.

What the Yellow Pages could have been today

Today, if they had done all this they would be profiting from an aggregated B2B and B2C transactions network. A “Walled Garden” that would allow them to not only charge for advertising in the directory but also collect fees for any transactions conducted across the directory network.

Buying and Insuring a new car using the new Yellow Pages would be as easy as this...

6 Degrees of Separation, and about 15 years, between being a Market Leader in Printed Directories to being the owner of a very profitable ”Whole of Market” eBusiness Transaction Hub.

Quite simple really. So why didn’t they do this? Good question.

I guess 20th Century Industrial Age strategic thinking and planning techniques just don’t cut it in a MobCon world… Certainly if you are just thinking about building a better search engine or online directory you are thinking about building a more intelligent node. What the Yellow Pages should have been thinking about was building a more intelligent business referral network. After all the network is the database? Right?

Could they still do this today? Of course they could. It would be relatively inexpensive to cobble together and integrate all the bits and pieces. After all, most of the eCommerce and web 2.0 technology required is probably at the “end of life cycle” stage.

The big plus factor of course is the Yellow Pages brand. There is still a lot of Brand Equity here than can be used as leverage with the SMEs and “Joe Public“.

The biggest barrier of course is simply the fact most of the potential customers already have a web site, an email address and an eCommerce solution. So they wouldn’t be able to charge businesses to join the network and they’d probably have to give away all the eCommerce plug-ins away for free as a hook.

They’d be building a B2B Facebook and hoping the Yellow Pages brand is a big enough magnet to draw a crowd.

Perhaps they could charge clients for branding their Yellow Pages web sites but the reality is the offering would look and feel “late to market”. More of a ME2 than an innovative “new to the market” offering. More a case of what should have been rather than a case of what could be.

So I guess they’ll just have to keep those printing presses rolling for a few more years and hope those strategic thinkers and planners can come up with some new and innovative ideas that will provide the Yellow Pages with a “Green” future.

After all, who knows what wonders the mobile web may bring.

Google has announced a tie up with Twitter and we will now be able to see Twitter updates in Google search results. This shows the potential of Twitter and how highly it is valued.

I strongly believe that Twitter is the next big thing. At present, It is not prevalently used in places such as India but I see this changing in the near future.

I see businesses using Twitter more and more. The amount of real time data that Twitter brings in is amazing. One of the areas I see businesses adopting Twitter is in customer service. The potential for this is huge and will be interesting to watch how companies innovate around this. e.g., Best Buy, a consumer electronics retailer, is using Twelpforce for customer service and company promotions.

When you work for yourself in a home-based business, one of the most challenging aspects of running

When you work for yourself in a home-based business, one of the most challenging aspects of running that business is managing your time. If it were only the concerns of managing the time that goes into running the business that needed to be taken into consideration, then that would be challenging but not impossible. When you start to throw into the minute the fact that, since you work from home, there are a lot of pressures and responsibilities related to being at home that also need to be factored into your time management skills, it becomes quite a bit more complicated.

One way to make a clean separation between working from home and simply being at home is to have a dedicated workspace and to make sure that your family, or roommates, or whoever it is you share your home living space with recognizers that that workspace is for running your business, and not for just hanging out as if you were at home doing recreational activities.

Of course, it can become difficult to constantly be turning down invitations from your family or housemates to watch television, play games, or do other home type activities. This is why it’s also important to scheduling the recreational time each day so there’s actually a part of your business schedule.

People who run home-based businesses absolutely run the risk of working all the time, of having zero separation between work and home, because there is no physical separation between the spaces. The temptation becomes to work from the time you get out of bed until the time you lay back down into bed at night. This is an important thing to try to avoid, you don’t want to fall into this trap.

You’ve heard the phrase, all work and no play makes so and so a dull girl or boy. Well, when you’re running a home-based business, it can make you more than dull. It can actually make you stressed out, and then burned out.

The best way to avoid this is to have a dedicated workspace and only spend the preplanned amount of dedicated hours and it. After that, enjoy your home in the way that it is mainly and foremost intended to be used, as the home.

Melanie Young is an author that happily works from home. She loves the freedom that making her own schedule and not having a boss provides! She especially loves the financial freedom that comes from working at home. Do you want to find out how you can do the same thing?

As childcare becomes difficult to afford, there are many parents who are making the decision to stay

As childcare becomes difficult to afford, there are many parents who are making the decision to stay at home with their children. In most cases, it is the mother that chooses to be the fulltime parent. If this situation sounds alto familiar, you may be experiencing a problem that many others also are. That problem is limited income. Unfortunately, it is difficult for many families to adjust to having only one income, especially when both parents were working. Instead of relying on only one income, you are encouraged to search for easy ways to make money.

When searching for easy ways to make money, there are a number of things that you have to be on the lookout for. There are a large number of internet scams. These scams often entice you to pay money to learn the secrets of making money. These offers are not business opportunities, instead most are scams. If you are interested in participating in a real business opportunity, you are urged to examine private label resell rights, especially those for e-books. You may very well find that this is the opportunity that you were looking for.

In the United States and all around the world, there are a number of individuals who have a knack for writing. Many of these individuals become professional freelance writers. Professional freelance writers create content and then try and sell it to prospective clients. However, many writers have a talent for writing, but not all have a talent for marketing. In fact, many freelance writers end up creating content, such as e-books, and then keeping them because they couldn’t find a buyer. This not only wastes their time, but it also causes them to lose money. This is where you could come in.

To prevent themselves from losing money, many freelance writers are making the decision to offer their e-books available for sale. This sale is not a traditional sale. Instead, they are selling the resell rights. This means that they are looking for someone to sell their e-book for them. In addition to selling their own creation, there are many freelance writers that will allow you to claim rights to their e-books. In a way, that means that you will be listed as the author. However, to do this, you may need to make a few changes. These changes will be stipulated by the writer, but most only require the changing of a few sentences.

If you are able to obtain the resell rights to a quality e-book, especially one that is on an in-demand topic, you may be able to make a fairly large amount of money. Each time you successful sell the e-book, you be able to pocket the money yourself. The cost of obtaining e-book resell rights will vary. Many professional freelance writers have their own ways for determining how much their resell rights will cost. Despite the varied costs, you may find that the resell rights pay for themselves. The more e-books you are able to sell, the more money you will make.

The amount of time and effort you put into selling the e-book, which you acquired the resell rights to, will vary. That is what is nice about this type of business opportunity. You could work as little or as much as you would like. You do not have to have a set schedule. As a stay at home mom, you may find this to be an amazing opportunity. Most of the other business opportunities available require long hours and loads of work. By purchasing private label resell rights to an e-book, you will be able to work when you want and where you want. This will not only allow you to control how much money you will make, but also how much time you are able to spend with your children.

As previously mentioned, you can make money by selling the e-book, which you required the rights to, anyway that you want. Many stay at home moms have found success by creating their own websites, by advertising in online classifieds, by partnering with an existing website, or by placing their e-books for sale on online auction websites. Whether you choose one of these methods or all of them, you should be able to make a decent, full or part-time income. You can easily achieve this just by purchasing the private label resell rights to an interesting and well written e-book.

The Australian banking sector was one of those quiet achievers who leveraged the first wave of the M

The Australian banking sector was one of those quiet achievers who leveraged the first wave of the MobCon to not only reduce its costs of doing business but also enter into profitable new markets.

The growth in online banking is an illustration of just how successful Australia’s banks have been in migrating their customers out of the bank branches and into becoming self-servers who, through the purchase of the their computer and monthly ISP fees, are willing to fund a significant part of the ongoing costs of doing business with the banks.

Growth in online banking

Some banks have been more successful than others. The Commonwealth Bank (CBA) has not only succeeded in leveraging the MobCon technologies to enter and dominate new markets.

Today the CBA is the market leading online stock broker in Australia. Delivering an additional 3% to the group’s overall profitability.

It has also succeeded in reducing it costs of doing business. The CBA has utilised the first wave of the MobCon to improve their overall productivity to the point where these efforts now deliver around 10% of the group’s overall profitability.

Breakdown of CBA Profits for 2008

What this means is the overall profitability of the CBA today is as much a tribute to these productivity gains as it is to the new business generated today by the AuD$8 Billion merger with Colonial First State back in 2000.

These results confirm the general eBusiness theory that it is easier, and more profitable, to leverage the internet to reduce costs than it is to chase new opportunities.

As you can see from the chart below the Commonwealth Bank (CBA) is one of the many Australian corporations to have indirectly profited from Telstra’s AuD$15 Billion investment in the MobCon over the past decade.

Commonwealth Bank vs Telstra share performance since 1998

The question is will it be as easy for the banks to profit from Telstra’s investment going forward?

In the first wave of the MobCon it was relatively easy for the Banks to reduce their costs of doing business while simultaneously increasing their fees. Essentially they had little to no competition in the credit and settlements markets.

Today things are different. As we shall see as I expand on this theme during the rest of the week ahead, new technologies and players are emerging that could revolutionise the banking industry. Indeed there are some who are already suggesting that the emergence of the smart phone payment systems could render the global banking systems as we know them today obsolete.

The first wave of the MobCon for Australian Banks was just about doing more with less. The next wave may be more of a battle for relevance and survival in a hyper-connected world.

What are the chances in 15 years time that newspapers will be a distant memory and we will be talking about “the impending death of banking“?

After all, if you no longer use cash, cheques or credit cards and you just use your mobile phone to buy everything. Do you really need a bank charging you monthly fees to manage the digital money residing on your mobile phone account?

Certainly if you are a shareholder in Telstra today you would be thinking a healthy slice of Australia’s retail credit market would do wonders for the embattled Telco’s share price.

ARPU Mobile Phones vs Credit Cards

When you are toiling away at home as a self-employed entrepreneur you need to keep in mind what you are trying to achieve – that is to make a living and to do it from the comfort of your own home. While data entry work can keep the wolf from the door, you need to be sure that you have chosen the right job that is actually paying you what you are worth.

Getting paid what you are worth may take a while, so at the very least you need to have a realistic budget and start out at the minimum amount that you need to earn per day – minimum because you may need to work up a reputation, you may need to find your niche; per day because if you have in mind that you must earn $3,000 per month you’ll be stressing for the whole month – day one earn $100 “OMG I’ll never make it”. $3,000 per month is equivalent to $100 per day, but as your own boss now do you really want to work every single day – give yourself a 5 day working week – so that’s $150.00 per day. If you estimate that you need to earn $150 per day, then after earning $100 you can say “Well I did okay, tomorrow I’ll try to push it up a bit”.

If you find a fairly regular source of work which isn’t really paying enough you’ll have to make a decision

- do you continue doing it hoping that you can work hard enough to bring your earnings up or that they will realize your potential and increase your pay rate

- or do you continue doing it to keep a trickle of money coming in while you find something better.

I would favor the latter as no matter how much money you have in reserve you don’t want to use it all up and have to return to working for an employer. Eventually you will find the right project (we don’t call them jobs anymore because you are self-employed) to enable you to earn the money you need.

But that’s not the end of it…..

Once you are earning your target of say $100 – remember that was just your minimum. Don’t be tempted to limit yourself by saying “well I earned $97 today I can finish”. If your minimum was $100 per day but your must earn was $200 per day (which will give you a bit of extra cash and allow you to have a life) keep pushing your limits and before you know it you’ll be on top of the world knowing that you can make your living from home. From there the sky is the limit – if you can make $200 a day how will you feel on that day that you make $300 a day! And then…

And then…

Before seeing how big businesses can help you, I’d just like you to ponder the following quest

Before seeing how big businesses can help you, I’d just like you to ponder the following questions for a minute.

When you’re at the grocer’s do you sometimes ask yourself if the apples are really fresh, or have they been in transit for weeks? What about the milk in your local supermarket? Did it come from the cow yesterday, or three weeks ago? And talking about cows, is that meat at the butcher’s as fresh as they say?

You’ll never know, unless you do a bit of research. Well, OK, a lot of research!

Now, how do you go about your research? Click on Google? Write letters to the marketing company?

You’ll probably have to wait for an answer longer than it takes the food to get to your table!

You see, the nearest the average person can get to the truth on these subjects is about as close as the articles you read in the newspapers…and they’re always about 24 hours old at best.

So if you cannot easily get to the truth about these everyday things, what chance does the average man or woman have of finding out the truth about adverts on the internet? Most of the time you just have to take a chance.

Only the other week I purchased a genuine looking program from a publisher who seems to have many different products on the go. A website that I was promised would be up and running within 72 hours did not materialize after 7 days and the promised bonus payment has not been seen three weeks later. I was not surprised, therefore when the, “No questions asked, instant refund”, was not forthcoming when I asked for it either!

But, perhaps I’m being too hasty and need to have a little more patience. I hope so.

Fortunately, the majority of offers online are genuine enough in the sense that you usually get the information that you have paid for. What is more problematic, of course, is the usefulness of the information you receive. Was it really what you thought it was going to be? Yes, it does what it said it would, but often it’s not what you actually had hoped for. D’you know what I mean?

I know you shouldn’t expect something for nothing and you’d be rather naive to expect to get £1,000s for doing very little. (Not like some politicians I could mention! But that’s another story.) But surely you should be able to expect that, with the information provided and a fair bit of work from yourself, some sort of return should be forthcoming quite soon after you start.

Even if it’s only the fact that you can see that you’ve had visitors and some people have expressed a genuine interest in your business. Much better, of course, if you make a sale!

So how can you help yourself when choosing a program to investigate? Fortunately there are people on the internet who scan different programs, interview both customers and retailers and do surveys to pick the good from the bad. It makes sense, therefore, to take advantage of these experts in the field. It is their job, after all, to find the programs worth investing in for large corporations. You’d be surprised how many, so called, well established companies invest in new businesses that they believe will give them a good return.

Think about it for a minute. If a large company can invest in about 100 small businesses that they have investigated carefully, then they are likely to boost their annual income by about 30% or so. Not much you might think. And 30% of say £300 is not much, just £90 profit.

But we are talking about BIG companies here. With a turnover of around £30billion. Now we’re talking about £9,000,000 profit. Not to be sneezed at!

Why not use some of the information that the large companies have found and build up your own lucrative business?

The salary of a regular employee today cannot suffice the everyday needs of a family and so many are

The salary of a regular employee today cannot suffice the everyday needs of a family and so many are forced to shift career, migrate to other countries, or assume a second job. Many people today are into work at home jobs because it has become one of the best alternatives there is to earn cash and more extra. Data entry as the most popular work at home job is also the most sought after venture today. In fact more than 27,000 people are doing this and are very much satisfied with how much they are getting.

Data entry is a convenient job because there is no more need to pack up things and go to work every day. There is also no need to worry about transportation and meal expenses. This is a job that can be done in the comfort of your home. It is in reality not a job but a business because you do not work for an employer for you do not have a boss; you are actually your own boss. However, it is now considered a job. One more thing, it is very different from an offline job as it has no fixed salary. The salary in this opportunity is dependent to the amount of work put in. The work itself entails simple filling of online forms on behalf of companies. When a product advertised sells through the forms you get to receive your payment.

To get started in this business is easy; one should only look for a legitimate program to join. A program is a site that provides information about the business. It also gives strategies and exclusive tips to its members. Above all, it links its member to outsourcing companies. But of course, before joining one should have a brief background about the job. The job itself entails typing of information to online forms on behalf of companies (usually advertising companies). The income here depends on the number of completed forms. It is actually simpler than you think because the information entered in the forms only consists of a three line statement.

How to generate more income in this business?

In this kind of business, $200 to $500 dollars or more a day is feasible. But I must say that it is not realistic for beginners to expect such amount for they are barely starting. They first need to learn the ropes before expecting high salary. Another, you have to always remember that in this industry the more you work the more income you will get. One technique to earn more in this job is to join a program because that will definitely guide you through and will aide you to reach your goals. As mentioned, it is the first thing you have to do, to find a legitimate program because it provides online training which is ideal to those new in the business. It is that easy to generate a large amount of money in this type of industry.

When you want to make extra money from home, it has to be profitable and at the same time cost effective. Most people rush in to starting a home based business without fully understanding what they are getting into. They lose money on the way simply because of not having the necessary knowledge.

It took me a long time to get started because there was nobody to show me how it’s done. You need a simple step by step guide to show you the ropes. Such mistakes are made when one is desperate and need the money now. Well, you have to put in some effort first to really see tangible results. This is why most people fail. Any business requires work. There’s nothing like easy money.

By taking the necessary steps like reducing start up costs can help you in having a profitable business. Make sure that your costs are as low as possible.

How do you make sure that you make extra money from home but the cheapest and profitable way?

•Put in some effort yourself instead of hiring somebody. I know that you use money to make money but what if you don’t have a lot of money to spare and you want to at least make something extra? Are you going to wait until you have all the resources you need? No. You can start now with the little you have and build your way up. So, work some extra hours more. This is what I did when I just started which by the way took me along time to build my business because I wasted so much time trying to learn everything and never made the decision to start.

•Look for one idea. Work on it until it works. If it doesn’t, go to the next one. Don’t dwell on one idea for too long. This is so much destruction where you don’t focus on one thing and keeps on trying anything and everything.

•Be optimistic about what you’re yet to venture into. Without this, your energy will go down and remember you need it to grow your business. I want to repeat one important point here. Don’t leave things in the middle. Try it until it works if not move on.

I want you to check this business idea that has made millions of people money and you can also make extra money from your home easily.

With the advent of Web 2.0 tools making a website is easy. These tools are simple and intuitive. Anyone can use them. There is no reason for technical barriers to keep you from being successful online. But there is a big difference in creating a website and…

Making a website that works.

Most work from home websites fail to draw and convert traffic. Without traffic your business is dead.

If you want to know how to build a website for personal reasons… and you don’t care about traffic to your site… then Web 2.0 tools make it easy. Find a company that does free website hosting and put up a pretty site.

But if you are making a website for business you will need to shift your thinking.

How to Make a Website That Will Fail

What? Why would anyone want to make a website that fails? They wouldn’t. But most home based business websites do just that.

The main problem is a failure to understand why people use the internet.

A previous coworker of mine used to call me – often – and ask my advice on buying a replicated site and selling someone else’s products. He thought that putting up a site… any site… could make him rich. It is sort of the “If you make it they will come” way of thinking.

Fortunately he did not waste his money.

Replicated sites are your worse possible option for too many reasons to recount here. But most custom sites suffer from some of the same problems as replicated sites.

They follow a truncated methodology something like this:

Find a product or service you want to sell.

Create an attractive website – or pay someone else to do it – to sell this product or service.

Put a shopping cart or some other payment process on the website.

The website sits alone in the dark and dies from lack of traffic

Sound familiar?

The first three steps in this process are important. The fourth step just happens.

As essential as the first three steps are they are a recipe for failure if they stand by themselves. They do little to bring and convert traffic. There are several other essential steps that take into account the reasons we all use the internet.

Without these additional steps your website stands little chance of success.

Even if you are willing to pay for traffic, few people will actually buy.

But by carefully including these other essential pieces of the puzzle, you greatly increase your chances of making a website that will draw free traffic. And it will also convert more of this traffic into paying customers.

You do have to have a good product. And you do need a website. And you do need some way for your customers to pay for your product. But these steps mean nothing without a proper foundation. Your product is not your starting point. You need to revamp your way of thinking if you want to build a website that works.

Start by…

Identifying a Niche and Build a Website from That Niche

If you are trying to sell to the whole world you will most likely sell to no one. It is impossible to target everyone. The most profitable online businesses focus on a relatively small niche of prospects who might be intensely interested in their product.

This is common sense.

No one wastes their time trying to sell hunting gear to animal rights activists. That is obvious. Nor should you try to sell your products to someone who is not already interested in solutions that your product addresses.

The first group would be hostile. The second group would be oblivious.

So you need to identify a niche. Marketers call this marketing in the long tail. It basically means identifying a niche (or sub-niche) wherein you can become a recognized expert. You would be the go-to person for many who share interests related to that niche.

So where do you find this niche? Preferably from within you.

Everyone has certain interests that other people share. Identify a specific area of interest that others share and you have the beginnings of your niche. Don’t pick something too large like “Sports”. You also don’t want to select something too tightly defined like the mating rituals of some insect nobody ever heard of

Identify a niche that you love… that thousands (not necessarily millions) of other people love and become the online expert in that niche. If you can find something about which you have a passion you are at a great advantage. Your work will come much more easily.

You will have more fun.

It is from this niche that your website will be born. Not from your product… but from your tightly defined niche.

Become the niche-master who provides rich online content for those who share your passion. Be the expert they look to for answers.

Start here and your website will not die a lonely death. It will draw hungry prospects who are eager to hear what you have to say.

Competition is generally considered to be good for the consumer forcing companies to come up with ever better products and holding down, or in some cases driving down, prices. However, if you are in the process of starting your own business competition may well be the last thing you need, especially if you have very little start-up capital.

One way to avoid the problem of competition is to simply carve out your own niche which, with a little bit of thought and some time and effort, is not as difficult as most people think. There are essentially two ways in which you can carve out your own niche.

The first is to offer a product or service which is unique. For example, back in 1975 a man named Gary Dahl came up with what many people thought was a ridiculous idea until they saw just how successful it turned out to be and just how much money he made. Gary Dahl came up with the idea of the ‘Pet Rock’ which was nothing more than a perfectly ordinary stone which was put into a box with a set of instructions (The Pet Rock Training Manual) and sold for $3.95. Not surprisingly his idea was so ‘way out’ that it attracted a lot of media attention, including television attention, which resulted in sales of more than one million Pet Rocks before people came to their senses.

Now this is perhaps a somewhat unusual example of the concept but remember that people buy what they want and not what they need. So, if you can come up with something that meets the desires of a particular market (such as a pet which doesn’t have to be fed or walked and which doesn’t make a mess in the house) then you could make a small fortune even if your product has a relatively short life span following the trend of the moment.

The second is to fill a gap in the market. It might seem surprising but there are many gaps in the market which companies for one reason or another simply have not yet got around to filling. If you do your homework and really get to know your way around a particular market you will soon start to spot the gaps.

Also, do not be afraid to think outside the box and here the Internet provides some excellent examples. Many people use the Internet to learn a skill and for years many people made a fortune providing ‘how to’ information in downloadable e-book format. As the Internet has improved from its early days so people have adapted their products, adding an audio version of their e-book at a higher price for example. Today people are making a fortune by taking those original e-book courses, updating them and now turning them into online video courses at a premium price. The product itself is not new but marketers are spotting gaps in the market and providing old information in a form which consumers prefer today.

Most home-based business owners are quite rightly in love with the products or services they are selling and their business was born out of their own skills an talent and from a passion they have for their particular product area. Unfortunately, all too frequently businesses run into trouble because the customers do not share the owner’s love for the product and, in some cases, they don’t even like the product.

In simple terms too many business owners base their products and services on what they like, rather than on what their potential customers are prepared to pay for. So, before staring any new business venture it is important that you do your homework.

Start by deciding just what market you are going to target. Are you, for example, going to aim your product or service at young married couples, parents of preschool children, elderly women or retired couples living in Florida? You may of course decide to target more than one market if this is appropriate but will still need to view each as a separate market which, in essence, will be a different arm of your business.

Once you have chosen a market you will then need to do your research and find out just what people in this market want. Whatever your product or service you are wasting your time if you simply try to push it on people whether they want it or not. However, if you find out exactly what your target audience is looking for and then adapt your product or service to meet your potential customers’ needs you could well have them beating a path to your door.

Having, discovered what people want, sit down and adapt your product or service to meet their needs and, in doing so, look carefully at the competition. Your product will either need to offer something that your customers cannot get from your competitors or beat your competition in areas such as quality, ease of use, portability and price.

With your product ready to go you then need to test the market because, no matter how careful you are, it is not always easy to get things right first time. Launch you product in a limited fashion and survey your customers to get as much feedback as possible. Based on this feedback you can then further refine your product and test again, repeating this process until you find that you are providing exactly what your customers want.

It is extremely important to work in a business which you not only enjoy but have at least some degree of passion for. However, if it equally important to work in a business which provides just the product or service that your customers want.

There are many different reasons for starting your own home-based business but when you look careful

There are many different reasons for starting your own home-based business but when you look carefully at the long list of reasons you find that they all fall into one of 4 broad categories.

1. Assets. Anyone starting their own business will possess a variety of different assets which they can bring to their new venture. For example, you may have experience of working in a particular field or have acquired a large circle of friends or business contacts over the years.

Basing a new business on one or more of your assets is by far and a way the most popular reason for starting any home-based business and applies in the case of about half of all new business ventures. However, basing a business on your assets is also the reason why so many new businesses do not do very well and often fail within a matter of weeks or months. The problem is that, while assets can be extremely helpful in getting you up and running, they rarely fire your imagination or spark your emotions, both of which are necessary to make any new business venture succeed.

2. Talent. Most of us have some sort of talent or skill at which we excel and if you can tap into this skill and create a business around it then not only will you find that people are willing to pay you to share your talent with them but you will have great fun doing so. About one in six businesses these days are founded on the basis of talent and and this can be a very rewarding route to follow, both financially and emotionally.

3. Passion. About a quarter of all new start-ups are based upon passion and such businesses are also generally successful in both financial and emotional terms. As long as you are passionate about a particular subject then you will not find it difficult to put in whatever work is necessary to get your business up and running and will not be put off by any obstacles which you might encounter along the way.

4. Mission. Although this is the least popular reason for starting a home-based business, a business which is started because you are ‘on a mission’ will often lead to considerable satisfaction from making a difference to the lives of people or to the world around you. In many cases a mission-based business can also bring financial reward along with it but often the personal rewards will outweigh and be far more important to you if you are starting a business on this basis.

So, what is the best way to decide upon a route to follow?

Without any doubt, if you have a particular skill or talent and are passionate about something then this should be your first port of call. If you can build a business around something in which you have a skill and are passionate about then you will find that your task will be both enjoyable and, more often than not, financially rewarding.
