Q&A: early toilet training

Emily writes:

“I’m pregnant with my first child, and have been reading a bit about the early toilet training/diaperless baby movement. It’s hard to get a read on it because people either think it’s crazy or genius. I don’t think that early toilet training warps a child psychologically, and I think the environmental arguments for it are compelling. Also, I’d rather start early than be frantically trying to toilet train the two months before preschool, like my niece. But I do wonder if it’s doable, or more work than it’s worth. What do you and your readers think? I’d be particularly interested in those who tried it and gave up, or those who combined it with daycare.”

I think when you call it “early toilet training” people do think it’s nuts, because “training” implies control, and babies just can’t control when they poop or pee.

But when you think of it as “elimination communication” or early toilet learning, it makes a ton more sense, because babies can absolutely communicate.

In both directions. If you think about it in terms of the way babies get themselves fed, the process starts to become even more clear: A baby gives little signals–smacking the lips, rooting, eventually escalating to fussing, then crying–to indicate hunger. The adult responds with food, so the next time the baby uses those same signals, and the adult responds and it starts a beautiful cycle that goes on happily until the next thing you know the kid’s saying, “Mo-om, do we have any juice boxes?”

But you can also change the course of that communication to make things more clear if you’d like. From the time my second baby was a few hours old, every time I fed him I’d say “nurse” very clearly just as I put him on. After about 5-6 days, when he’d fuss to eat I’d say “nurse” and he knew I understood and was coming and he’d calm down for the few seconds it took. Some people introduce a hand sign for food when their babies are a few months old, and it has the same effect, and then the child can use the sign to ask for food long before they can use words.

(GREEK NEWS AGENDA) Greece has failed to take the necessary measures to cut its fiscal deficit, according to the directions offered last spring by the EU Council, the European Commission (EC) announced on Wednesday, before recommending that the country be placed under excessive deficit procedure of Article 104(8) of the Treaty of Maastricht.

Responding to this, Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou said that the government is determined to restore the credibility of its macro-economic statistics and reduce its large fiscal deficit.In its autumn forecasts, released last week, the EC sees Greece’s budget deficit remaining above 12% of GDP through 2011 – at 12.2% in 2010 and 12.8% in 2011. “We do not share the EC’s projections that see the deficit over 12% in the coming years. This projection was made without taking into account the change in policy,” said Papaconstantinou, who believes he can lower the budget deficit to below 10% next year. “We are changing policy and this will be reflected in the next budgets,” he said.

The European Parliament and Council have reached a compromise on its Telecoms Reform Package. The package will entitle users in all 27 EU states to be put through a “fair and impartial procedure” before being disconnected from the internet. Some members of the European Parliament felt nobody should lose their connection until after they had been prosecuted in a court for illegally downloading content. So far it is less than clear exactly what will constitute a “fair and impartial” procedure. The European Parliament wanted the issue on the agenda as a result of new legislation in France. French people caught downloading illegal content up to three times will be disconnected from the Web.

Shouldn’t it be a basic right to have access to the internet! Like having a phoneline or the use of snailmail or travelling to stay in touch and meet people. The music and movie industry should be moving in the 21st century too instead of crying about their own f@!ck ups!

There’s no explicit statement in the Article 82 of the EC Treaty ruling out what Intel has done, at least what its competitor AMD has alleged it, in offering conditional rebates to computer retailers. Industrial Organization theory would lead a student to conclude that such conditional rebates would result in foreclosure of the competitor with the smaller assured base.

The contracts offered are such that, say, if Dell wishes to have 10 units of chips and AMD, due to its capacity constraints, can only supply 2 units of $1 each, and Intel can supply the remaining demanded quantity for the same price. The conditional rebates in question set by the tech-giant necessitated for Intel supplying the whole quantity demanded at a lower price, say, 10 for $.80 each.

One defence that has been used by Intel is that these rebates are not force-fed to their retailers, that the retailers are free to be under the contract or not. AMD’s capacity constraint does not help in this matter, leaving profit-maximizing retailers with the necessity of compliance to Intel’s mandates by taking the contract.

Which leaves to the billion-euro question – must Intel necessarily charge as such that makes partial subscription to AMD services impractical in comparison to not taking their products at all?

And a question to the EC – if the nature of these rebates, and the basic premise of the antitrust policies, is to rule out competition such that a more powerful giant would monopolize and terrorize consumer welfare, why is AMD still alive if the documents in question occured years ago? In fact AMD has recently acquired ATI, a graphics card maker, and have been penetrating netbook market that was previously dominated by Intel. Its market shares are rising and in the whole the industry price is falling, and the effect of conditional rebates did not seem to be the same as what the textbooks have predicted anti-competitive measures such as rebates would have.

The EC has fined Intel for a billion euro, which is less than the fine of what is usually charged on violators of antitrust policy, 10% of revenue, and an Intel appeal is ongoing. Perhaps a better punishment would arise and also better stipulations on what big companies can and cannot do.

Ken Silva, creator of Apprising Ministries (ministry formed in response to the Great Emergence, which he believes to be unChristian), needs to receive some lovin’ from those of us he deems to be heretics. I think Jonathan Brink said it well in his recent post “We Love You Ken Silva”. This does not come naturally for me, as I am usually one who will supply a quick-witted response who challenges me, but I believe Christians are to known by our love – our love for God, and our love for others. I have never been challenged by Ken directly, and for that matter, the only thing he ever said directly to me was gentle and kind. So I feel particularly inclined to show this love to Ken. I have to admit, though, that he has frustrated me with his ministry and comments on his website, and slander of my friends. Actually, anything I read by him other than his one gracious comment on my humble blog, greatly angers me and hurts me and looks very unlovely and …. But what will I do with that?

I remember the day I met Doug Pagitt and Tony Jones. I had been listening to the critics of EC and was becoming convinced that it was really scary. But I knew I had to find out for myself. I “met” Tony by going to his blog and asking him very directly about the rumors I found most disturbing. I was glad to find out that much of what was being said was taken out of context and was, in fact, not true. I was shocked, in fact, to later discover that the most heinous rumors about him were created by chopping up bits and pieces of his book, The Sacred Way, and putting them together to make it sound like he worships small statues he keeps in his pocket. Anyway, the day I actually met Doug and Tony, in person, is a day I will never forget for many reasons. But I have heard Doug’s exhortation to me echo in my soul many, many times over since: When they slander and lie and hurt us we must respond not in kind, but in love. He didn’t use those words, his were way better, almost poetic. And as deep cries out to deep, I could feel the Holy Spirit in this gentle giant as he looked into my eyes and encouraged me to forge ahead in my pursuit of Jesus, showing compassion and mercy to those who would seek to hurt me. I am hearing that message again through Jonathan, and it is so difficult, yet so touching, for me to hear it that I am posting here all about it!

Here’s where I struggle though: I live with this fear that if I do not correct others when they slander someone then bad things will happen. For instance, when I found out that the idol-worshiping rumor was not true about Tony, I launched into this campaign among my friends to show them the truth about him, but they wouldn’t listen to me because I had already declared myself a friend to him. So I panicked, thinking that more and more people would buy into the lie, and then this movement of God might not reach people who are so desperate for change in their lives. I kinda got hell-bent for a while (very punny, huh?) trying to convince my friends that EC was really a move of God. The harder I tried to show them what I had found the faster they ran in the other direction. They had been told that they might be deceived by Satan like I had been so they closed their ears to me and treated me as though I had joined a cult. Thankfully, I have settled into the realization that they won’t be shown, and our conversations no longer steer in that direction. I say thankfully only because of the destructive nature of quarrels, but on the inside it still irks me that I was not a reliable source to them.

Which brings me back to people like Ken Silva, who make it their life’s work, it seems, to bring other people’s ministries down. I want to fight, to respond in kind, to scream and shout if I have to, to make them stop hurting people and telling lies about people I care very much about. I want to make them unite and move forward in God’s redemptive plan for this world and its people, rather than continue to bring division and discord. That is what I want to do. But I feel like Jesus is ever-pressing me to trust in him to do his will, and to be a participant in it whatever the cost. I feel like he is telling me not to fear, reminding me that I am not responsible for the saving of the world – but rather an active member of a body of believers who are at work in this world bringing his grace, mercy, peace and love to the lives of others. And how am I to bring his love to the lives of others? By insisting that I am right? Or by turning the other cheek and walking red-faced through this world; humbly serving others and loving them as myself?

It’s 24 now, but I am still having smt to tell ya ’bout 20/10

You sure know what that day is, don’t you? You received presents, flowers, and above all, love from your beloved ones. Vietnamese women’s day has long been a chance for guys to show their caring to their lovers, and therefore, I would be a little boredness for those who are still alone. I would have had that chance and you wouldn’t have been that boring. You know what, I was upset about that.

Back a few days to the school festival, FTU’s day. I was pretty busy then, so were you. You were someone like cheerleader for the club in which I got to know you, and you were also one of the candidates for female arms wrestling. It sounded kind of funny. And it really was. My class was about to host a Beauty contest for classmates and we were required to tape smt about our 12 candidates. Ironically, some of them confirmed with me about taping of FTU day, on which I just wanted to be free to come to enjoy the festival, and in some meanings, with you. I knew I could never totally enjoy such a day with you like I used to have, but at least I can be with you, chatting and encouraging you taking part in games, buying you some foods and drinks and taking you home at night. I borrowed a camcoder with the hope of filming you the whole day and then I would make smt special for you this christmas and New Year. That didn’t happened, though.

I filmed my friends, but I was interferred by noises coming out from the other side of the building. I knew you were there, taking pictures of friends and cheering them. I tried to come out and filmed you. Of course, nobody knew, including you. I filmed you most of the time I could get away from my friends, but I missed the moment you became the champion of female arm wrestling. That was regretful, you should know that. In the end, you saw me and you came to me and informed me. I showed you a face of no suprise caused I knew that from the very beginning, I knew you were strong and the most important thing is, I always had my eyes on you.

A few days later, the ABC training of EC. Fortunately, my ACCA class was delayed, so I came to see EC’s new bees that day. I looked around to find you, and of course you were there, LOL. Red and thin sweater, brown shorts with leggings, silky and black hair, you had my compliment, even though I didn’t say it out loud. Your smile was big and you were happy and so excited. You are now a club manager and responsible for guiding new ones. You did a great job. New bees loved you, and they will still love you in their coming days. I could be sure about that. I love you even more. ^^ :”> Accidentally, I had my borrowing camconder with me, so I filmed the whole afternoon. Well in fact, I filmed you the most. You would never know that for sure. And it was so lucky for me that I could take you home and had a little talk with you along streets. I didn’t tell you my wish, my desire about you, I just made sure that I got everything you said.

2 days later, the 20/10.

I had 2 sleepless nights, rendering films and scripting plans with my friends. Exhausted. I couldn’t, well, even buy you a gift. I have no excuse about that, but I was sad cause I didn’t do that. You received presents and you said to a friend ” that was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen…” I was really jealous. I know him. I was mad cause it wasn’t me. However, I was happy that you received more than 1 sms that day, just like your wish when I sms you.
