Gen : Tina. Oh, yes she is/was a giver.

As far as album covers go, Leona Lewis’ “Echo” is definitely a very simple and very clean cover. There is nothing “holy shit!” about it, but at the same time, there’s a bit of a striking-ness to it.

It’s really nice to see an album cover that doesn’t totally fail on the text. I have had my fair share of covers with text that I couldn’t read AT ALL, which I find very stupid. I know the pictures important, but it’d be nice to know what the title of the darn thing is here. The one thing that bothers me though is that I wish the title “Echo” was below her name. That might just be me being really anal though.

One of the things that fascinates me most about Leona is how she is such a chameleon. I’m not sure if it’s just not me, but she is always sporting a dramatically different look. I kinda have a hard time figuring if that actually is her. And yes, that chameleon comment applies here too. I had to double check on her other pictures to make sure this actually was her.

And Damn, she is quite a beautiful woman in this picture. Nothing says “beautiful” like a very bare bones shot like this one. I’m surprised to find how gorgeous she is with her hair all wet and pulled back. We really get to see her features. Yes, I know theres makeup involved, but still. I just can’t over those beautiful lips!

However, the one thing I really do not like about this album cover is what she’s doing with her face. She’s doing a “Jennifer” face. If you remember Jennifer, she was the only Asian contestant in cycle 13 of ANTM, and she had a habit of constantly keeping her mouth open.

Yes, the fact that Leonas mouth is opening is bothering me. However, I’m happy to say that it doesn’t make her look “whory” like how Jennifer was in her Goddess Photoshoot. I think it’s the eyes that makes the open mouth look awkward.

The mouth by itself is fine. However, when you take a look at her eyes, it makes her look very dazed and confused. I do not like how it looks like she’s looking in a different direction. It really would have been nice if she looked more directly at the camera. If that did happen, I think she would have really nailed this shot.

The tree in my backyard sheds more than a St. Bernard in July. Leaves are everywhere and there

The tree in my backyard sheds more than a St. Bernard in July. Leaves are everywhere and there’s’ no end in sight. To remedy this problem, I ventured to the nearest Home Depot and bought an Echo blower/vac to use the leaves as mulch around my recently re-landscaped yard. It worked pretty well. For 3 hours.

Then it broke. It started to smell like it was catching fire, which is certainly not something you want to have happen while dealing with gas-powered yard equipment. And, the pull cord no longer pulled. It was done.

Mugshot #1 of the perp.

There are very few things that annoy me more than when you invest money into technology that promises to part the seas and change your life, only to have it not part the seas and drown you in a tidal wave of frustration. Had I really known how to fix it, I would have, but that’s not the point. The point is, technology is supposed to make life easier, less complicated, and to aid us in tasks we already do. Not make life more difficult, take up more time, and add frustration.

For some of my student’s in class, this is exactly what I am giving them. Not intentionally of course, but that’s what they feel, and that’s their reality. How then, can this be combated?

Mugshot #2 of the perp.

Well, a lot of it has to do with education. If, for example, I knew how to fix the leaf blower/vac, I could have fixed it myself had the problem recurred in the future. Or, knowing that it’s a piece of junk, I could take it back to the Depot of Homes, get a refund, and swear off Echo purchases again (something I would never do because I love the weed-wacker I have). Since I wasn’t (and still am not) educated enough to understand how to disassemble a motor like that, I can’t fix the problem myself, but that doesn’t mean I need to give up and allow the leaves to win now do I? Even if the gadget doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do, the experience is something I can learn from.

At school, students (and the occasional parent) may have the tendency to shut down when they don’t understand how to use something we’re doing in class. The latest instance of this I experienced was a paper I had my students type using Google Docs. For some, it was a real challenge to create an account, type the paragraph, and learn how to share and edit their paper with myself and their peer editing partner. Some students wanted to just use Microsoft Word, while others were so exasperated they just wanted to write the whole thing by hand. The time before that, students needed to make a map using Google Maps. Embedding and highlighting the routes explorers took to North America was a significant challenge to some students.

In both situations, it does no good to abandon the project altogether and write the paper or do the maps the old traditional way. They already know how to do that. What they need is to learn new processes that make it easier to learn, share, and collaborate. Sometimes, this works exactly the way it’s supposed to, and others, well….sometimes you have to return a blower/vac to Home Depot and try again. If you give up, you don’t learn anything new. If you don’t learn anything new, you’re raking leaves in two feet of snow.

This weekend the Backyard Bang went off in downtown Denver at the Art Institute. Milling through the crowd during the morning set up, some of the first people to be found were local Echo fans that had come out to enjoy a day of shred and to support the Echo Team. High fives were distracted hellos as everyone’s attention was on the 3 stories of scaffolding in the middle of the intersection. With so many familiar faces showing up early on, the day was shaping out to be a promising one.

Collin Backowski and the Echo-mobiles

Tucked between tall city buildings in the shadow of the capital building, the setup took shape with 3 options; a down flat down rail, a gap to down box and a rolling down box complete with hubba options. After a warm up session of testing out features and figuring out tricks the competitors were unleashed in 3 different heats. Echo Team riders Collin Backowski, Andrew Burns, Seth Hill, Nick Brewer and Marc Moline got after it early with Seth, Nick and Marc all making the finals.

Watching Set Up

In the Finals there was no holding back as bruised and bloodied competitors threw down banger after banger and kept going back for more. In the end however, only one person walked away with the $2000, Six Eight Six team rider Forrest Bailey. With so many familiar faces and a great showing from the Echo Team, the Backyard Bang was an amazing event. Thanks to everyone who came out to show their support and thanks to the Team for throwing down.

Be sure to catch footage of the Echo Team at the Backyard Bang in the first installment of Echo TV Season 3 coming Monday November 30th.

The Damhsa Festival 2009 was widely advertised on the Echo, Southern Star, C103FM, Carrigdhoun, Cork Independent, Douglas Post.

Posters and flyers were distributed and erected strategically around Cork City and County. The poster brought people to the concert in Carrigaline and one member of the audience was so moved by the performances that he had his Corportate Affairs personel send a circular to all 1,500 staff members of the City hall to remind them of the opportunity to see the concert the following Saturday.

Damhsa Fest ’09 was picked up by RTE and TG4 on Friday 24th, 2009 on which they reported from Kinsale.

Many people including one family from Co. Laois on holidays in Blarney, found the festival on the internet and came to Carrigaline to see and participate the show in the car park.

Others came from various outdoor concerts to the City hall to see the full extravaganza.

A group from Finland had made contact with Damhsa about being invited to the 2009 festival after all the groups had been selected. These 8 dancers brought their parents with them to Ireland to see the festival anyway. They travelled as a group of 16 people and stayed for several days during the festival. An opportunity to perform did come about at the Owenabue Valley “Irish Night” held in the Flying Enterprise Complex on the Thursday night of the festival. As a result of the advertising they were able to plan their holiday around the festival.

Failte Ireland offered us their main window to display and advertise our festival. It was well received and certally located and attracted many queries and resulted in an increase in attendances. Failte Ireland were thrilled with the window and have requested that we repeat a display for Damhsa Fest ‘10.

What happened Leona Lewis?

Mr Simon Cowell gave the go ahead on this right? On the billboard posters there’s a little Syco logo at the bottom.

Leona is a good looking girl but I’m not quite sure if sleeking her hair and throwing her head back sexes it up at all. To be honest, I think it makes her uncomfortable looking.

Maybe the record company are trying to break well into the US R’n'B market but I so think that one of the things that set Leona apart, image wise, was her curly, slighty blondish hair, setting her apart from her ‘paint by numbers counterparts.

Silencieusement.

Leona Lewis’ new song “Happy” is everywhere but watching the music video really made me fall in love. Director Jake Nava’s (Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”, Shakira’s “She Wolf”) Brazilian? themed love story is simply beautiful. Leona looks stunning and her acting is subtle and believable and her male lead is delicioso. A testament to the power of the right song paired with the right visual.

My sister Echo has been playing music for most of her life. She’s part of a growing arts scen

My sister Echo has been playing music for most of her life. She’s part of a growing arts scene in Riverview, one that is beginning to thrive despite the Alto threat. So popular are the performances they put on at the makeshift arts centre that the mob have been powerless to stop them. The artists from the artists’ colony have helped provide drapes, costumes, posters and make-up for the concerts the local musicians put on. It has kept some of them out of the Altos’ firing line: they are simply too popular with the people. The Altos know there is increasing unrest about their activities and were they to cause enough unrest, it’s possible people could overthrow their regime.

Echo always loved our grandad’s stories about music and arts in the before times. He talked about things called theatre and films, where people would tell stories and they’d act and move and dress up, and people would pay to watch and be entertained… it sounds rather fantastical, but Echo loved it. She and some of her friends have dreams of creating their own shows one day, and Echo has started composing the music already.

They are planning a small show to open in a few months. I couldn’t be prouder of my big sister, yet also sad – it is time for her to move on and spend time with others who share her dream.

Seeing Echo achieve her heart’s desire has enabled me to make some big decisions. I love Eugene, and I asked him to marry me. I was thrilled when he accepted. We had a long, frank discussion about my aunt Gloria and Eugene and I came to an agreement about what we would ask her to do.

Eugene also decided to leave the police force. Echo has inspired him, too. He has always dreamed of playing music and the arts centre are starting to employ a small number of musicians. My sister recommended him and so he’s started working there. He is so excited by the possibilities it opens up to him.

I am so fortunate to have someone to share my life with; to share this responsibility with. Sometimes I wonder if running this household and carrying on the good work my grandfather began is too big a task for me. I want so much to honour him and my mother, to honour all those who have gone before us, but I have never known if I was up to it. Now I know that I will be OK – I have a partner by my side who I trust completely, and who trusts my judgement. He has given me the confidence in myself to make decisions about our future.

Eugene is also a great cook, which comes as a relief. Dad used to do all the cooking and since he died, we have been existing on burnt hot dogs much of the time – Eugene makes them just right every time. I miss dad so much, but Eugene cooks hot dogs almost as well as he did, and tasting them helps me remember him, and smile.

I had a long talk to Gloria when I discovered she was thieving. She and I both want the same thing: to see the reign of the Alto mob come to an end, but I can’t condone her actions. As a police officer, it would compromise me too much. However, I can’t throw her out whilst Hirogen is so young. It would be unfair to expect Gloria and Davros to start afresh when my cousin is still so young and vulnerable. We decided she would stay here until Hirogen was a little older, and she wouldn’t talk about her activities with the rest of the family. I can’t pretend I am happy to have a thief under my roof, and I know if work found out about it, it could cost me my job – and could possibly cost my sister Ezri hers, too. I just hope Gloria is careful.

I have been concerned about my little brother Gaius for a while, but it is so hard to talk to him. He keeps shutting down and becomng surly if I ask him anything about his activities. This can’t go on – this is my home and he needs to treat it, to treat this family, with respect.

Yet mum dotes on him. He is her youngest, her baby. She is so proud of the rest of us, and I know that if she was to discover Gaius was keeping secrets, potentially dangerous secrets, she would be heartbroken.

Whilst there is trouble here, there is also great celebration. Ezri is working undercover and enjoying it a great deal. I feel nervous every time I know she is on an assignment. With her skin tone she stands out, only a small percentage of the population here have the same affliction, and the Altos have spies everywhere. Like our aunt Cas, though, she seems to live a charmed life; dodging danger when others in the same position have encountered assault, beatings or worse.

Since Echo and her friends began performing at the arts centre, a real mood has shifted here in Riverview. People are making things for each other, indulging creativity in ways we hadn’t known before, or hadn’t dared try. Several of Echo’s friends make an income from making clothing – this is a new indulgence; we have always had to make do with hand-me-downs from the survivors; but they have found ways to convert old fabrics into something new and beautiful. There are even a few people who cut and style hair. Apparently one of the survivors was something called a ‘hairdresser’ in the before time and had shared the skill with her descendants, and now people are feeling braver, the skill is spreading.

Another thing that has changed is that people want to celebrate more. One of Cas’s friends has taken up baking cakes and the Altos have given up trying to monitor people’s gatherings at home, so we decided to hold our very first party to celebrate Hirogen’s birthday.

We invited the whole family, and it was so wonderful to have everyone together. Mum seemed so overwhelmed that we were all here and were all safe.

I looked at them all and realised how fortunate I am to have been brought up in this family. So many families here have been torn apart by sickness, by fire, by people being beaten by the Altos, or by people joining the Alto mob. There is a lot here that could damage a person’s soul, could render them hard or damaged for life. I know my own father was scarred deeply by the things he went through here, and there are people hurt far worse than he was. My family are strong people, good people and we have stayed united. That’s so rare in this town, and I hold it so dearly.

Hirogen decided that what she wanted for her birthday was a haircut and some new clothes, so we asked some favours of the people in town who could help…

She was so pleased with her new look: she is such a beautiful girl. Davros and Gloria both had tears in their eyes when they saw their little girl all grown up and becoming so confident in herself.

There is also another cause for celebration. Eugene and I are expecting our first child.

The first person we told was Echo. I wanted her to be able to celebrate with us as we have been celebrating with her. My sister has brought so much life and joy to Riverview – I am confident that the things she and her friends have done for this place will change it for ever.

Shadows of a Future Unknown

The new moon hidden in Scorpio’s sky,
starlight clears a path before it’s obscured.
She is lost within shadows, cast aside;
a darkness now surrounds that memory.

She wanders, listening to the sounds as
sense and fantasy battle within her.
Is there one path right for her – or for him?
Do they cross anywhere but in the past?

Soft declarations echo in her dreams,
she recalls her heart’s plea… never too late…
and wonders when she stopped believing it.
Each step forward a painful reminder,
a wound she thought healed, being reopened.
With the future unknown, she keeps breathing.

Happy week before Thanksgiving! As always, I go through a period of not buying any new music for a while, then splurge all at once. My last post was about the great debut from Them Crooked Vultures, which I would probably give 3.5 out of 5 stars to, at least according to the Tfronky Rating System. While at ZIA Records off the I17 Freeway and Thunderbird on Wednesday I found some used stuff I wanted, including the new Flaming Lips disc Embryonic, and found the latest Echo and the Bunnymen disc The Fountain new.

Flaming Lips – Embryonic – 1 star
It pains me to write that, because I really do like this band. The Soft Bulletin was incredible, and Do You Realize is one of my all-time favorite tracks. I will have that song played at my funeral. But Embryonic is 18 songs of pure noise that if I did drugs at all still would not improve the quality of listening to this album. I may play frisbee with this.

Echo and the Bunnymen – The Fountain – 3 stars
A wonderful, plesant surprise. Echo is my all-time favorite band, and this album may keep them there for a while. I have been really disappointed in this band since 3/4 of the original line-up reunited in 1997. The four albums they have released since then have been, in my opinion, sub-par at best. Well, The Fountain may not be Ocean Rain or Porcupine, but I think it is the band’s best work since 1987’s self-titled fifth album, the last with the original line-up.

The Fountain is actually an album that sounds very similar to Echo and the Bunnymen, particularly to the lead track from that album The Game. Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant are the surviving original members, and although Ian’s voice sounds a bit strained today and Will’s guitar work is not what is was during the band’s prime, the ten songs on this disc are welcome additions to the Bunnymen’s catalog. The Fountain is simply classic, mid-tempo Britpop, done Bunnymen style with plenty of Ian’s witty lyrics and Will’s guitar hooks.

Needless to say I am excited, it is great to hear the Echo I fell in love with over twenty years ago. I have not seen them since 1988, here is to that changing in 2010!

Cheers!
Frank

5/5

Having firmly routed a UK flag pole in the charts of almost every major country around the world with her record breaking single Bleeding Love, Leona Lewis finally embarks on the voyage which will almost certainly set the tone for the rest of her career. Fluke successes come and go and small discoveries are often soon forgotten. This chart conqueror, though, seems determined to make more of a lasting claim on the continents she won over two years ago with her debut album Spirit. New release Echo sees the continuation of a number of working collaborations with some welcome additions and a definite growth and maturity in musical sound.

The sought after Ryan Tedder is back to provide two album highlights; both lead single Happy and the OneRepublic duet Lost Then Found. Both tracks demonstrate a depth of emotion that was perhaps a little lacking in Lewis’ debut and although the pop sparkle of Bleeding Love is traded for a more gritty, philosophical tone, the transaction is a fruitful one. Max Martin, the father of modern pop music, also returns with Outta My Head which could well just blow a few minds. Although Lewis has dabbled with a little bit of pop before, the phrase up-beat has been a bit of a no go zone. Well no longer! Outta My Head sees Lewis easily competing with the ‘GaGa-Bootylicious’ of today and must surely be a future single. Though Ne-Yo’s presence is sorely diminished, Justin Timberlake more than fills the gap with Don’t Let Me Down, focussing on a more authentically urban sound.

Leona Lewis cynics, who continuously criticise her preference for ballads, will be blasted out of the water by Broken and My Hands. These two songs mark, perhaps, only the second time that Lewis’ extraordinary vocal abilities have been matched by an equally incredible lyrical content. The voice soars, the lyrics dig deep and the production values draw the two extremities together beautifully. Whilst some will continue to call her dull and predictable, those who really listen will hear an artistry that is genuinely unmatched by any other female singer in the genre right now.

Do we really want Leona Lewis to start singing club friendly tracks when it is the ballads that set her apart from everyone else? Isn’t that the reason that we voted for Alexandra Burke last year?

By Dian Alyan

My visit to Bangladesh this past April was a life changing experience. I went with a desire to see how life really is for some of the neediest people in the world. When I first arrived in Dhaka, I felt as if I were part of the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.” Fortunately, I had a dear Bangladeshi friend, whose family welcomed me in their home in Ghulsan, a posh neighborhood where I stayed during my five day visit. However, not too far from that neighborhood, I was assaulted by endless signs of extreme poverty: women and children in torn clothes sleeping on the sidewalks, beggars at every street light, and cardboard boxes turned into temporary shelters.

During my stay, I visited a slum close to Dhaka, where there were at least 50 families in line waiting to see me. I was scared, uncomfortable, and not sure if I should proceed, but was reassured by my friends who arranged the visit that it was safe. As I started distributing donation money, given by many of my generous friends, I wondered what would happen to these people the next day. I was amazed that they managed to smile, despite the fact that their entire livelihood relied on the kindness of random strangers.

I also had the opportunity to visit the Darus Sunat orphanage in Khaligong where 300 boys were only able to eat 2 meals a day and had to share 3 bathrooms. GiveLight, my non-profit humanitarian organization based in Sunnyvale, California, is now sponsoring the 3rd meal of the day and building 10 bathrooms for these orphan boys. I also was able to visit an orphanage in Myemensingh, run by a generous ophthalmologist, Dr. Saleh. On the way to his orphanage, he took me to his Eye Clinic that he opened to serve the needy for free. There, I met 10 blind girls who lived in a little house behind the clinic. They sang songs for me in English and Bengali, and I was unable to stop the tears from streaming down my eyes as I realized how little I valued my eyesight.

When we finally arrived at his orphanage, about 4 hours later, I was thoroughly exhausted. The scorching heat and humidity made me keep saying, “khoub gorom,” which means “really hot” in Bengali. However, I felt refreshed after meeting the boys and girls who lived at the orphanage. I gave them some advice and was so thankful I was able to spend such a beautiful afternoon there with them! Toward the end of my visit, we enjoyed lunch and jilebis together-koub mauja! (“Koub mauja” means “very tasty” in Bengali.)

Soon after, I met with some of the ECHO project managers, and we decided to become partners in an effort to build an orphanage for 50 girls. I was shocked when an extremely generous family in Dhaka, Bangladesh offered to donate half an acre of land in Savar for this cause. Our work will begin very soon, with our goal to have the groundbreaking ceremony in the spring of 2010.

Although I only stayed in Bangladesh for 5 days, I had seen enough human suffering to compel me to start doing work there. I am committed to making this project a success. From my experience of building an orphanage in Aceh, Indonesia, I’ve learned that we only need 3 ingredients for success: 1) sincerity of intention, 2) willingness to work hard, and 3) reliance on a higher power. I trust that the funds will come and that you will all join me, as we strive to preserve the honorable and important duty of caring for orphans.

When you have the best and fastest selling debut album, the most difficult thing would probably have be replicating that success with the sophomore album. Leona Lewis’ second album does not disappoint in that her music and song choice seems to be much better. Although it largely contains the big (and slow) ballads that we want to hear from her, she also includes some interesting choices, which really adds to the diversity of the album, and showcases the versatility (sort of) of her voice.

The opening track is the first single off “Echo”, “Happy”, which can be quite inspirational if you listen past the gloomy music that supports the lyrics. It seems to have that message that encourages one to do whatever that makes them happy, and not be pulled back or stopped by others, and not really like what was depicted in the music video (watch it below). Seems like a message for her Asian fans… Anyway, I think this song is really nice, although it sounds rather familiar with the Ryan Tedder treatment I guess.

Other notable tracks on the first few listens would include “I Got You”, the electro number “Outta My Head”, “Love Letter”, the “duet” with One Republic “Lost Then Found”, and the Oasis cover “Stop Crying Your Heart Out”. It seems like Leona’s really good at doing covers (e.g. her take on Snow Patrol’s “Run” was simply amazing; so was Avril Lavigne’s “I Will Be”), after all, she started out doing covers on The X Factor. I think the mark of a great singer is probably also to take someone’s song and make it your own.

On the whole, “Echo” is definitely a great pop album overall, one that is more polished. She could have taken more risks, but i think for the moment the track selection is fine, and her brilliant vocals just shine through each track. What’s more, she looks amazing on the album cover, a very top model picture. I think that she sounds better on the more up-tempo tracks on this album, or it could be just me. Also, do listen out for the hidden track “Stone Hearts and Hand Grenades”. I hope she tours Asia soon!
