Dear Friends,

Greetings from Silicon Valley and hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving holiday and indulged in good shopping, if nothing else for the sake of the US economy and some new jobs!

Eclipse Plug-in From Kovair:
On the Kovair front, a few interesting things are worthy of note in this blog posting. We mentioned in one of our earlier posts about the completion of our Eclipse Plug-in for the Kovair Omnibus that will allow all Java developers using the Eclipse IDE environment to get connected with many other aspects of the ALM such as Requirements Management, Test Management and Release Management through the Kovair Platform without leaving their preferred IDE environment. We have just completed a White Paper on this topic that will be added to our website in the next 2-3 days. Please visit www.kovair.com and download this paper from the Collateral section of the website. We think this is a very positive development for all Java developers to connect to the rest of the Application Lifecycle entities and objects and collaborate with various other people working on the same project! A large IT Services Company is implementing this capability as I write this.

Visual Studio Team System – VSTS
Our next step is to offer the same type of capability for the .Net developers with an integration of Kovair Global Lifecycle Management with the Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) which is in progress as I write this and should be completed over the next four weeks.

Kovair ITSM Goes Live:
Another positive note for Kovair is that one of our IT Services Management customers went live with the Kovair ITSM solution last week. Some of the major differentiators in our implementation for this customer are listed in the following paragraphs.

Service Plans and Contracts – Kovair ITSM Solution provides facility to define Service Plans for Billing and SLA purpose. It also provides facility to customize service plans on a customer-to-customer basis. This is important because for a preferred customer contract you may like to give them a better value proposition. It also provides facility for a customer to choose different service plans for different applications for which they wish to avail the services such as ERP versus CRM

Process Automation and Integrating the complete Ticket Resolution Lifecycle – Complete Ticket Resolution Lifecycles are maintained in a single repository. Based on the business rules, the system automatically escalates Tickets and creates Problems/Change records, which are processed as per defined process-workflow. With this automatic traceability relationship is established between Tickets → Problems, Ticket → Changes and Problem → Changes. So from the Ticket, one can monitor the status of the entire Ticket Resolution including Changes.

Customizing Solution exactly as per Customer Scenario – Kovair Customer has over the years developed best practices for managing services of their customers. They monitor the process-workflow at automated task level. At task level they are monitoring activities being performed by the users. This is done in order to ensure that SLA’s are adhered to for all tickets. Like this there were many complex business requirements which were implemented in Kovair ITSM Solution which helped them use the tools exactly as per their normal requirement and they didn’t have to modify any of their processes according to the tool!

With these updates, let me close this blog. We are hoping to communicate to you at least one more time before the year is over! In case I fail to do so, Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Bipin Shah

Eclilpse is one of the most popular IDE for JAVA based development projects. As we know every techno

Eclilpse is one of the most popular IDE for JAVA based development projects. As we know every technologies and tools comes with its own learning curve. Althaugh eclilpse is very easy to use but still lot of the developers are not using it at its fullest capacity.

Here in this post I will show some very useful Eclipse shortcuts which will be useful for you in your day to day development.

Get rid of manual Import statements : Organize Imports ( Ctrl+Shift+O)
After you write a line of your code you may need to Impot classed used in your code.Otherwise eclipse will show errors as you can see in this image. Organize Import will import classes if found from class path of your project.

Quickly Go to File : Open Resource ( Ctrl+Shift+R)
Project we have several packages, in order to go to the particular file developer need to traverse to file through packages/folders in Navigator /Package view. For example I am looking for BaseModelImpl.java file instead of going through all packages/folders
Do : Open Resource ( Ctrl + Shift + R ) and type BaseImpl it will show all files starts with BaseImpl you can select the file you need and press OK to open. It supports RegEx so you can type like Ba*Im*.java also to filter your search. It can locate any file in your project not limited to .java files.

Quickly locate JAR which contains ‘the class’ : Open Type ( Ctrl+Shift+T)
Several times I need to know which particular JAR contains the class I am interested in. For Example I have couple of projects in workspace and I copy paste few lines from other project. Its giving errors as Eclipse not able to resolve classes. As its working in other projects, I need to know which JAR file this class contains and I need to copy that jar file to my project and/or set in classpath.

Jump to Last Edit Location : (Ctrl+Q)
Working with multiple source files is reality of development . When you are working with multiple source files and need to know in which file you made last changes you can easily Jump to last Edit Location using ( Ctrl+ Q).

Locate where this method is reffered in projects : (Ctrl+Shift+G) (Quick Search)
In order to know where this particular method/variable is reffered not only in this project but other projects of workspace also. Select method in Editor and do Ctrl+Shift+G. In search view Eclipse will search its references in all projects in current workspace.

I’m a newbie in Java so it does when working on this Java IDE (what a bunch of features?! dizzy, la!). Well, when I’m working on Eclipse I’d like to use some shortcuts as I feel a little bit lazy to lift my hand off the keyboard. Here are some eclipse shortcuts that I use recently:

Ctrl + Q to go back to the latest editing area.

Ctrl + O to display the full outline of the class. Press it twice? it will display full package information.

Ctrl + T to display the superclass structure.

Ctrl + E to jump over the opened script editors.

Ctrl + F6 to jump over the opened script editors, but we must hold the Ctrl button.

Ctrl + . to go to the next error location. Then Ctrl + , to go to the previous error.

Ctrl + 1 to display any suggested solutions by eclipse. I use the previous shortcuts along with this one.

Alt + Shift + S +R to generate the setter and getter method.

Ctrl + / to comment a line of code.

Ctrl + Shift + R to open any file in the package browser. Remember, any file!

Ctrl + Shift + T to open any file and any type of class included in JDK. Similar with the previous shortcut.

Ctrl + Shift + G well, just use this shortcut to view the full list of available shortcut in our eclipse IDE^^.

Circa 1995, i was fiddling with Linux and tried to install it on a PC. It was very difficult to install and configure. ( Of course then I was not a hardcore computer programmer, I had just begun my computer career, though i had been somewhat familiar with BASIC programming since my B.Tech. days)

Fastforward, to 2008. A quick search on http://sourceforge.net, a online community of several open source projects returns several thousand projects. There are projects, in every area, from OS’s to CRM and ERP solutions , storage solutions, even cloud computing solutions. While the large majority do not work properly or have bugs, several projects work great.

The most famous Open source of all is the Linux OS, and then there is mySQL, Eclipse IDE, Compiere for ERP, GnuCash for finance, Sun Star Office, FireFox browser etc. The list is endless, what is remarkable is that the quality has been gradually getting better and the feature set richer.

FireFox Browser , when I experimented in 2003, had several bugs, would not play Flash properly, but today, it is as good as IE or even better in some aspects. And Open source will surely change the landscape of the software industry to come. For one, it is making the software product development companies more competitive. No one wants to buy a product, when an equivalent open source version is equally good or even worse. This is keeping the software product companies on their toes.

Open source movement would not have been possible without the internet, one can say Open Source movement is a baby of the internet. Internet has been a truly disruptive technology, Open source movement is just in the long list of paradigm shifts that it has been responsible for . Some of the others areas that have truly changed are outsourcing, e- commerce, banking, supply chain management, travel etc.

I see the list of Open Source applications growing steadily and I predict a day where most of the commonly used applications, will be Open Source. What this means to the software companies like Microsoft is anybodys guess.

I predict, in the immediate and long term , commonly used software applications like Office Suite, Databases, Browsers, and even ERP/CRM systems will become commoditized.

Customisation, project Work, integration of different software systems etc. by their very nature will continue to be revenue models,.

In the mean time, Open source application watching has become one of my favortie pastimes!

.project
Datei in einem Texteditor zu öffnen.

Fügt man nun zwischen
<natures></natures>
die Java Nature
<nature>org.eclipse.jdt.core.javanature</nature>
, erkennt Eclipse beim Öffnen eines Projekts das Projekt nun korrekt als Java Projekt.

Viel Spaß!
