Twilight. In my attempt to avoid literature altogether for the last few years I had bypassed the Twi

Twilight.

In my attempt to avoid literature altogether for the last few years I had bypassed the Twilight Saga’s inception and success altogether. As with some of my most loved books, I heard about Twilight first due to the movie adaptation which hit theaters last year. However, my path to discovery in this instance came about somewhat backwards.

A few weeks ago a co-worker whose music tastes interweave with my own mentioned I should listen to a song she was in love with from the Twilight soundtrack, “Eyes on Fire” by Blue Foundation. I had been in want of something aside from my humdrum iPod rotation for a while, but hadn’t gotten around to searching for new music as of late, and the radio seemed to be stuck in the same vicious cycle as always. My response to this song surprised even me. I listened to it on repeat for the next two hours, then sought out other songs from the soundtrack to get a feel for how the movie would potentially play out and quite a few of the songs greatly suited my liking.

Mind you at this juncture I hadn’t seen the movie, didn’t know the plot or genre other than “vampire teen drama”, and definitely hadn’t happened upon the book. Did I mention I lead a typically reclusive life? The soundtrack sparked a dormant interest in me and I purchased the special edition of the movie on the way home on a whim. I waited for the three glorified bachelors I live with to leave the house so I could watch my movie in peace, knowing I would catch all kinds of slack from them for my choice of entertainment.

The movie was low budget, with a few really cheesy effects (yay sparkles!), and the lead actress is prone to overacting at times. All that aside, I fell in love with the movie instantaneously! Newcomer Robert Pattinson portrays one of the truest to “life” vampires I’ve seen on the silver screen, at least according to my vision of how a vampire should be. The film was well-cast all around, the soundtrack flowed fantastically into the story, and I proceeded to watch it two more times over the course of the weekend to gain further understanding of the characters and catch things I may have missed on first view.

Now, before continuing I must backtrack further to explain how I came to the next logical step.

In 1994 Interview with the Vampire hit the theaters and my developing love of vampires and historical films seemed to come to a head with this picture. I wasn’t allowed to see it in theaters due to the graphic nature of some scenes, but I was able to convince my parents to let me see it when it came out on video the following summer. The same latching response occurred, and I proceeded to watch Interview pretty much every day for the following year. I had it memorized by the first week, and would systematically fall asleep during the voyage to the Old World by the 6 month mark. I asked for the box set of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles (Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, Queen of the Damned, Tale of the Body Thief) for my following birthday and devoured those books, rereading The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the Damned in particular numerous times. Over the next few years one by one I purchased and absorbed every book Anne Rice has written under that pseudonym and a few under different names. My favorite book to this day is Cry to Heaven. Furthering my involvement in her life and literature was the fact that the majority of her plots centered around New Orleans, a place near and dear to me geographically as well as emotionally. I heart Anne Rice.

Now, back to present. Twilight. I listened to the soundtrack, I watched the movie, the next logical step was to read the books. Despite my long-standing subconscious aversion to delving into a good novel since high school, the void in my current life was crying out to be filled with something familiar and comforting. Delving into a good story, reading into the wee hours until I was too tired to see straight, even the crisp turn of the page and the smell of fresh ink. I missed this. I needed this. The following week I purchased Twilight and for a brief moment I felt complete again. The first page released that hunger for knowledge and adventure immediately. I moved on to New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn. Each bringing me closer to that elation I had known in my youth, and the disappointment when I had completed the last book and would have to seek entertainment elsewhere. After reading each installment I paused to watch Twilight the movie again to refresh my memory on the beginnings of the story. I’ve listened to almost nothing but the soundtrack for the movie at work and on my commute for a month now. Even though I’m done with the initial reading of the books, I can’t seem to bring myself to move on to another author or book just yet.

Perhaps it’s the obsessive-compulsive side of me causing this stagnation as I’ve experienced it in the past. I’ve often wondered how I get to a point like this, where nothing else seems to satisfy my unknown cravings. My short lived involvement with Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga feels like a burgeoning relationship cut short by some unforeseen circumstance. Just when things were getting good it abruptly ends, and I’m left with a wanting for more, with no tangible conclusion. At least with Anne Rice, much of her catalog was readily available when I picked up Interview with the Vampire. I had years of reading and rereading ahead of me, a seemingly endless supply of lives to discover. Basically, I need more before I can move on… perhaps when New Moon comes out this weekend it’ll satisfy my curiosity for the time being and I can focus on something else.

These are some notes on using Java 1.6 on Mac OS X with Eclipse. Mac OS X lagged behind for some tim

These are some notes on using Java 1.6 on Mac OS X with Eclipse.

Mac OS X lagged behind for some time on adopting Java 1.6, but it was finally released as Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1. Unfortunately, this release has some limitations: it only runs in 64-bit mode and only on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). This meant no Java 1.6 support on Mac OS X 10.4, no support for PowerPC systems, and no support on the early 32-bit Intel Macs released in 2006.

To make Java 1.6 the default Java execution environment, run the Java Preferences application (found in the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder). There you can drag the Java versions into any order you wish for both applications and applets. So to default to using Java 1.6 for everything, you can just drag Java SE 6 to the top of both the application and applet lists. The Java Preferences application will change around symlinks to correspond to your new choices. Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) appears to include only Java SE 6, but includes both 32 and 64-bit versions, so it should allow Java 1.6 to be run on the oldest Intel Macs (no PPC because Snow Leopard does not support PPC).

Some command line scripts expect the JAVA_HOME environment variable to be set to the directory that contains the Java distribution being used. Also, some scripts might require different versions of Java. To support this, Apple introduced a new utility called /usr/libexec/java_home. By default, java_home just returns the home value appropriate based on the selection in the Java Preferences utility, but command line arguments can request different versions (see the manual page linked earlier). The output of java_home is intended to be assigned to the JAVA_HOME environment variable in a shell initialization script (like .profile or .cshrc).

This brings us to Eclipse, the Java development environment. Eclipse can be used to develop for multiple Java versions. When creating a Java project, Eclipse prompts for the desired JRE version in the new project dialog box. To ensure that Eclipse tracks the language differences between versions, also select the desired version in Preferences->Java->Compiler->Compiler compliance level to match your project.

However, despite these changes, Eclipse itself does not necessarily run using the Java version being used for the project being developed. Initially, the latest version of Eclipse (3.5) was released only in 32-bit mode for both Carbon (an older and deprecated Mac OS API) and Cocoa (the modern Mac OS API). Since Leopard only supported Java 1.6 in 64-bit mode, this meant that Eclipse was always running under Java 1.5. With the release of Eclipse 3.5.1, there are now 64-bit Cocoa downloads available, and these will run under Java 1.6. For some users, this may not be important, but for those doing Eclipse tool development (such as the Hackystat Eclipse sensor) it is very helpful. I use JAXB in some of my Ant build scripts, and JAXB is built into Java 1.6 but not Java 1.5. When running Eclipse in Java 1.5, many of my Ant scripts report spurious errors about being unable to locate JAXBException, but these all vanish when running Eclipse under Java 1.6. I should note that at least some people disagree with this advice, and suggest using the 32-bit Cocoa version on Leopard instead of the 64-bit version. Everyone apparently agrees that on Snow Leopard you want the 64-bit Cocoa version of Eclipse (unless you are on a 32-bit Intel Mac).

So if you want to use Java 1.6 for your application and run Eclipse under Java 1.6 there are two options:

Use Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard (with all software updates) on a Core 2 Duo Intel Mac, with Java Preferences set to use Java SE 6 as the default Java version, and use the 64-bit Cocoa version of Eclipse 3.5.1.

Use Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on an Intel Mac, and use the 64-bit Cocoa version of Eclipse 3.5.1 [note, I have not specifically tested this configuration, but it should work]

In primul rand, cateva pozici noi noute!

Apoi cateva noutati despre actori.

I got really tired of seeing my maven target directory and .svn directory entries show up in the ctr

I got really tired of seeing my maven target directory and .svn directory entries show up in the ctrl+shift+R (open resource) dialog in Eclipse. Here’s what I did to remove them.

For .svn directories, I simply shared the project through subversive. I suspect doing the same with subclipse will work. Once eclipse knows that it is in version control, it removes the .svn directories from the Open Resource dialog.

For the maven target directory, I marked the directory as Derived. To do this, simply open the properties for the directory by pressing alt+enter or right clicking and selecting properties. Then, select the “Derived” property.

Derived Setting

Finally, you can remove the target directory from your Package Explorer using filtering. Simply select the little down arrow menu in the package explorer, then “filters”, and in the Name filter patterns, type “target”. Note that this will remove target from the Package Explorer, so if you want to mark it as Derived, you will need to do so before removing it from the Package Explorer.

Jacobot a szerintem nagyoon helyes Taylor Lautner játssza, akit a Cápasrác és lávalányból ismerhettek.

A filmben ő kivételesen nagyobb szerepet játszik, mind Edward, hiszen ő elhúz.

most pedig jöjjön néhány pletyka, infó a színészekről:

Mivel Robert Pattinson és Kristen Stewart a filmben szerelmesek, máris azt kell gondolni, hogy a külvilágban is azok? talán igen, talán nem. egyikük sem nyilatkozik róla, tehát vagy tényleg nincsen semmi köztük, vagy csak szégyellik egymást…

!!!!

Tudom hogy ez most nem ide jönne, de ezzel nem bírok várni: íme az Újhold zenéje, Meet Me On The Equinox a Death cab for cutie-tól.

1.„Színészi eszközöm 75 százalékban a hajról szól a filmben”-mondta XY02.

Siga as instruções seguintes e reinicie o eclipse. Pronto!

Vampires used to be foul, undead monsters who slept in coffins and had nothing on their minds but dr

Vampires used to be foul, undead monsters who slept in coffins and had nothing on their minds but draining the blood from the living. They were scary. They were vicious. They were BAD. Now they are romantic leads. Everyone is in love with them. They twinkle.
Well, I have some questions for fans of the new type of vampire. Starting with this: Do vampires take showers?
Sleeping in coffins, crypts, and shallow graves would lead to some grooming problems, I would think. When the sun goes down and the vampires wake up, they no longer have any time to seek the blood of the innocent. They have to find a bathroom where they can shower, use hair gel, and brush their teeth. Crest doesn’t make fangpaste, the modern vampire has to find some other way to make sure his fangs are gleaming white. No self-respecting victim/unrequited lover is going to let yellowed fangs near her jugular vein.
The fans of the “Twilight” series don’t seem to have really thought this vampire love thing through. A vampire is a terrible date. His idea of a romantic evening is probably taking you to Lover’s Point, then leaving you alone while he kills all the other couples there. If a vampire asks you out for a bite, he isn’t talking about a burger and fries.
Once the relationship goes past the first few dates, it’s time to get serious. I won’t even mention marriage, that’s not going to happen. Death has done you apart before you even met him. I’m talking the physical stuff. First off, the hug. He wraps you in his manly vampiric arms. Very romantic. What do his armpits smell like? They haven’t seen any deodorant since the middle ages.
Then you get down to it. Do you really want to have full body contact with someone who is room temperature? I suppose it depends on the room. It might be all right on a warm summer evening. But if you are with him for any length of time, you will want to snuggle under the blankets on chill winter nights too. Have you ever been unable to sleep because your partner has cold feet? A vampire lover has cold EVERYTHING.
I can’t finish this without mentioning the heart of the issue. Even if it takes four books of being apart before you can consummate your relationship, you do want to consummate it eventually, right? Well, you can’t. Vampires are the world champions of erectile dysfunction. To be crude, they can’t get it up. Why? An erection is caused by increased blood circulation to the area.
Vampires don’t have any blood circulation. None. Nada. Zip. No amount of Viagra is going to help, either. The drug can’t create more of what isn’t there to start with.
I would stay away from vampires as lovers all together. Now, werewolves I can see. They are warm, furry, and eager to please. They will sit, stay, and roll over. If you can keep them from peeing in the house and chewing on your slippers, you have a faithful companion for life. As long as you have a headache and sleep in another room three nights a month, you won’t wake up as scattered, gnawed bones.
So fans of “Twilight,” “New Moon,” “Eclipse,” and “Breaking Dawn,” if I have tricked you into reading my blog by putting these titles into my keywords, maybe I have given something to think about. Stay away from vampires, and look for real, human men. They may be emotionally cold and unable to love, but they won’t put you on a slab in the morgue. All right, some of them will, but serial killers are the topic of another column entirely.

After creating a new project, the Next button was not working if i was clicking on it, but navigating to it from the keyboard and then pressing space seemed to be the solution.
Example:

#!/bin/sh

#!/bin/sh

export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1

/RUTA_DONDE_TIENES_ECLIPSE/eclipse

If you have even the most fleeting acquaintance with a prepubescent girl, the chances are you’

If you have even the most fleeting acquaintance with a prepubescent girl, the chances are you’ve gathered that the film of New Moon, the second in Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling quartet of vampire novels, is released on Friday.

At a “stars meet the fans” event in London’s Battersea Park last week, the hysteria that has greeted each publication day quickened into a bacchanalian frenzy. It came complete with nubile tweens with “Bite me” scrawled across their foreheads, thanks largely to the pallid charms of Robert Pattinson, the young British actor who graduated from a bit part in a Harry Potter film to playing the glitteringly beautiful 107-year-old vampire Edward Cullen.

Edward Cullen, for those who haven’t been exposed to a hot blast of tween fervour, is not your average bloodsucker. For a start, he’s renounced the part about suckling virgins’ necks. Instead, he’s part of a posse of “vegetarian” vampires who have foresworn the hard stuff – your actual humans – in favour of hunting game in the woods.

Second, he’s attending high school (vampires don’t age and Edward is stuck forever in the simulacrum of a devastatingly attractive 17-year-old boy) in Forks, a small town in Washington State, where he’s unwillingly fallen in love with Bella Swan, Meyer’s human heroine.

This thrusts him into the quandary that drives the entire series, namely that if he goes beyond first base with Bella he will end up destroying her with his unleashed vampiric lust. Bella’s best friend, incidentally, happens to be a werewolf, and for much of the quartet she’s caught in a big old supernatural tug of love between the two.

As the shrieking fans suggest, Stephenie Meyer is big business these days, heir apparent to JK Rowling’s crown. Though her novels throb with all the emotion and eroticism that the vampire genre demands, penetration – of either sort – is endlessly delayed, making them ideal for an audience who have outgrown the charms of the bespectacled wizard without necessarily having reached the age of consent.

Since the publication of her first novel, Twilight, in 2004, Meyer has sold more than 70 million books and is credited with singlehandedly shoring up young-adult publishing, plugging the gap in bookshops after sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows began to die down.

Her last book, Breaking Dawn, sold a breathtaking 1.3 million copies in 24 hours. To put this into perspective, Dan Brown only managed to shift a million copies of The Lost Symbol on the day of publication. This year, Meyer was ranked by Forbes as the 26th most powerful celebrity in the world, not bad for a woman who once claimed that when her eldest son was born: “I just wanted to be his mom.”

The origin story of Twilight is almost as fantastic as its contents. Stephenie Meyer is famously a Mormon, living in Arizona with her husband, Christian, known as Pancho, a former accountant who is now a full-time father to their three sons.

Though she majored in English literature at the Mormon Brigham Young University in Utah (where she was apparently much sought after by “the Y-chromosomes, if you know what I mean”), becoming a novelist was not something she consciously intended, and the only job she had previously held was as a receptionist. The story, which in its repetitions has gained the patina of myth without losing its gawky confessional quality, also possesses a supernatural element.

As Meyer explains: “I never planned to write a book. I wasn’t planning on a career in writing, I wasn’t thinking about stories I wanted to write down. But I had a dream.” Literature inspired by dreams is not uncommon, particularly among horror writers. Mary Shelley first encountered Frankenstein and his terrible creation in a waking nightmare; Robert Louis Stevenson dreamt two scenes of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde; and Coleridge composed “Kubla Khan” in an opium-induced reverie, though much of it was dislodged from his mind by the person from Porlock, who interrupted him before he’d had a chance to jot it down.

In this, if nothing else, Meyer trumps Coleridge. On 2 June 2003 (“I know when I started writing because I had it marked on my calendar. That was the day I started my summer diet…”), she had a dream about a girl and a sparkling young vampire who were talking in a meadow.

In between changing nappies and providing breakfasts for three children under five, she managed to sketch out a plot in her head and over the next few months typed Twilight one-handed with her baby on her lap. After her sister suggested publication, she researched agents on the internet, received a stack of rejection letters and was eventually accepted by an intern who’d dug her manuscript out of the slush pile. Within a matter of months, she’d signed a three-book deal with Little, Brown for $750,000, quickly followed by film rights.

The fairy-tale quality of Meyer’s ascent inevitably recalls JK Rowling, who conjured up her boy wizard from a cafe in Edinburgh while struggling with single parenthood and depression. Both Meyer and Rowling have created worlds so thoroughly imagined, so intricately assembled and lovingly decorated, that a reader can simply set up house within them; both, in consequence, inspire idolatry from their fans.

Forget queuing outside bookshops wearing a pointy hat: Meyer’s fans like attending stadium events known as Twilight proms, where they can dress up as Bella, swig blood-coloured punch and scream until their ears bleed.

Not all their attention is positive. After the publication of Breaking Dawn, a group of former fans started a campaign on Amazon called “Don’t Burn it, Return it”, in the hope that Meyer would pick up on their dismay and change the ending.

Cannily, or perhaps gamely, Meyer has put a good deal of effort into engaging with these impassioned readers. Until recently, she went on endless, gruelling book tours and her official website links to hundreds of fansites with names such as Glittery Boyfriend and Bloody Craving. Many are filled with obsessive stories based on the Twilight characters, something she has mixed feelings about: “I don’t like them wasting their time on something they can never claim as their own.”

This concern for her readers’ morals is a recurrent preoccupation. When, in 2008, a partial draft of her unfinished new novel, Midnight Sun, was leaked online, her response was to abandon the book and put the draft – “messy and flawed and full of mistakes” – up on her own website, so that her fans “don’t have to feel they have to make a sacrifice to stay honest”.

You wouldn’t catch Bram Stoker fretting over his readers like that. But then Meyer is not your typical queen of the night. She hates horror, is a teetotaller, has never seen an R-rated film and confesses to not even having read Dracula (one imagines the sexy, savage True Blood is also out).

While Anne Rice, the bestselling author of Interview With the Vampire, once staged her own funeral in New Orleans and liked to arrive at readings carried in a coffin, the closest Meyer comes to gothic is a faintly barbaric necklace and a temporary black rinse.

It is this desire to keep things pretty that makes Meyer so palatable to her readers (and perhaps explains why her first novel for adults, The Host, a blended sci-fi romance, did not match Twilight’s sales). She’s drained the blood from the vampire genre and replaced it with sugared water; it’s no wonder teenage girls flock around her like hummingbirds.

Critics, on the other hand, are inclined to accuse her of peddling an agenda of abstinence by dressing it up as a more romantic choice than sex, while her celebration of female passivity has incensed feminists, who see the vulnerable and hapless Bella as a dangerous role model for an impressionable audience.

As is the case with Rowling, the quality of her prose has also been attacked. Certainly no one would describe her as a stylist. Her novels are melting marshmallows; to say they are poorly written is to miss the addictively febrile sweetness on which they run.

“Delicious,” Oprah Winfrey proclaimed lip-smackingly in an interview on Friday, before congratulating Meyer for having “ignited a love of reading for children and adults alike” and introducing her to a school where there was a waiting list of 1,000 for the library copy of New Moon.

Oprah was Meyer’s only interview this year and there are signs she’s withdrawing from the circus she’s created. She’s called a halt to the book tours and returned home to her marble desk and her kids, claiming: “I’m a little burned out on vampires now. I need to clean my palate.”

A film of The Host is in production, and she’s begun work on a new fantasy series, set in a realm that she has already intricately mapped out. Her publishers must be rubbing their hands in glee. Her books might be escapist, but Stephenie Meyer has the knack of building worlds in which everyone wants to hide.

The Meyer lowdown

Born: Stephenie Morgan, 24 December 1973, in Hartford, Connecticut, to Stephen and Candy. Educated at Chaparral high school, Arizona, and Brigham Young University, Utah, where she read English. She now lives in Arizona and is married to Christian Meyer. They have three sons.

Best of times: In 2008, Meyer was the biggest-selling author of the year and her first novel, Twilight, was also the biggest-selling book. Her annual earnings exceeded $50m, propelling her on to the Forbes list of the most powerful celebrities, while the film of Twilight grossed $35.7m on its first day.

Worst of times: Meyer admits her teenage years weren’t happy. Growing up in Arizona, she was intensely pale and needed to have therapy after other kids bullied her by calling her “ghost”.

She says: “What I like about science fiction is the same thing I like about Shakespeare. You take people, put them in a situation that can’t possibly happen, and they act the way you would act. It’s about being human.”

They say: “Meyer’s [writing] seethes with the archetypal tumult of star-crossed passions, in which the supernatural element serves as heady spice. The audience falls under the spell of a love that is not only undying, but undead.” Liesl Schillinger, the New York Times
