As well as the Hendo’s prints mentioned above, there are plenty of other local-themed illustrations available. Obviously Pete McKee is one of the most well known (don’t forget his Children’s hospital 2009 Christmas card) and Jim Connolly’s Sheffield superheros screen prints are also popular. The treasured Rare & racy shop on Devonshire street has various other prints, including Jonathan Wilkinson’s excellent We live here series of defining but less-celebrated Sheffield landmarks including the wedding cake, Park hill, the Roxy and the egg box.

• Charity voucher book

I’ve already written a post about this charity voucher book, but the premise is simple: spend £50 on a book of local vouchers that includes £1,000-worth of savings. And £15 from every one sold goes to charity. You won’t get round to using them all but after using three within the first month I had made my money back and of course have got a whole load more bargains to look forward to. Be quick though, as most of the vouchers expire in August 2010 so the longer you leave it the harder it will be to cram them in.

The Cooling towers shop may have been and gone but the Tinsley towers still hold a dear place in the heart for many people and befittingly there are still plenty of souvenirs available by which to remember them. • Pop books and shop books

There are a couple of Sheffield-related books with a nostalgic tinge that have been published in time for Christmas. Neil Anderson’s Take it to the Limit explores the late 70s and early 80s music scene through the eyes of the Limit nightclub, or Sheffield’s Hacienda as it was know by some. More pop music nostalgia can be found in artist Martin Bedford’s Up against the wall, a book collecting together some of his famous Leadmill posters that he produced to promote visiting bands in the 1980s and 1990s. And starkly contrasting with the city centre that we know today, the Shopaholics guide to 1970s Sheffield looks back to a time when town was the major shopping destination of the north.

• I love Sheffield eco bag

Julia Gash bought this local variation of the I love New York design to Sheffield a couple of years ago. She was previously involved with the (now closed) Gash shop on Devonshire street but has since set up a business selling eco bags and the I love Sheffield one has been a huge hit, as you can guess from the frequency that you see them around town. They continue to be particularly popular with students and it looks like some variations on the original design are now available, too.

The crucible is due to reopen imminently and the theatre’s new carpet is apparently inspired by the distinctive 1970s design of the original. The theatre has been selling off pieces of the old carpet to raise money and at the last count a few of them were still available.

The city may still be up-and-coming in the culinary stakes but progress is slowly being made and there are now some good places to eat out. Chef Richard Smith is the man behind many of the area’s more impressive restaurants and his relax, eat and drink privilage card could be just the gift for a foodie friend or loved one. You get £50-worth of restaurant vouchers, a £25 bottle of champagne, a free meal on your birthday, money off every other meal, free tea and coffees and more. The size is 31cm×35cm with gusset width 12cm (seems smaller than the bag sold on the web shop) – it is too small for our usual grocery shop (we buy tons of foods, mostly consumed by M), but perfect for a small shopping or little chores.

The exhibition corner outside called ‘Tank’ displayed the one of the London’s iconic uniform, the State Dress of the Tower of London’s Yeoman Warders, or ‘Beefeaters’ (as you see on the label of Beefeater Gin, a sponsor of the exhibition), re-interpreted by three fashion students, as a part of current exhibition “Super Contemporary“. The exhibition matched with the lit-up Tower Bridge on the back and really atmospheric.

I was wandering around Elizabeth Street today and stumbled upon Ananas [248 Elizabeth Street] and fell instantly in love with the beautifully designed handmade bags. 

Designer Jennifer Baum Lagdameo studied film in Japan and lived in the Philippines where she was inspired by the local techniques of both countries that lead to her becoming a handbag designer. Many of the bags are made with natural fibers, making them eco-chic. And to add to the chic factor, Lagdameo plants 10 trees in the Philippines for every eco-bag she sells! I loved the rich leathers of the bags paired with hand-carved wooden pieces. My favorite bag was the Nealy with a metallic gold “crackle” finish and wood zipper pulls [Nealy bag, pictured in blue].  There was another great bag with a faux sting-ray finish in black and white accompanied by a beautifully carved wood piece. I loved the “synthetic”-natural pairing in this bag and in all the bags (and belts!) in the collection. One last favorite is the Loulou bag made with Italian lambskin. It is a perfect carry-all size with simple details.

La moda de la conciencia medioambiental se está instalando en nuestro país, y vino para quedarse. Como muchas otras, esta tendencia llegó algo retrasada a estos confines del mundo. En otros países, como Japón, Suecia, Finlandia o Estados Unidos, el tema ya lleva años en la agenda de gobiernos y privados, generando industrias millonarias a su alrededor.

Hace algunas semanas hemos sido testigos de cómo los grandes del retail están intentando adoptar – con hechos y no palabras como rezaba algún slogan político- un elemento de esta tendencia: las bolsas “reutilizables”. Se trata de bolsas de género o nylon resistente, que se compran una vez y luego se pueden reutilizar cada vez que la persona hace sus compras. Falabella y Jumbo han sido los primeros en desarrollar el proyecto.

Esta iniciativa, una mínima expresión en el fomento de una “cultura sustentable”, sin duda representa un desafío, ya que el éxito de su implementación dependerá de la capacidad que tengan las marcas para cambiar hábitos muy arraigados en la mente de los chilenos.

¿Será posible hacerlo?

Sinceramente, creo que no. Si bien existe un segmento no menor de personas que sí está dispuesta a llevar su propia bolsa al supermercado, pienso que las propuestas de Jumbo y Falabella son muy tímidas y responden más a una moda que a un verdadero compromiso medioambiental y por ende, a un intento de “cambio de hábito”. Las bolsas pueden ser bonitas, o prácticas, pero eso no es suficiente.

Qué pasaría si simplemente no entregaran más bolsas de nylon? O si para poder embolsar las compras fuera obligatorio comprarlas?

Investigando para validar esta postura, me encontré con este ejemplo. Housing Works, una empresa norteamericana que pone este mensaje en su entrada: no entregarán bolsas ni boletas a sus clientes, como una manera de ahorrar y contribuir a generar una conciencia medioambiental.

Otro ejemplo es IKEA, donde para llevarse las compras en una bolsa, se debe pagar alrededor de 1 dólar por cada una. Si no quiere pagar? Bueno, usted se las arregla.

En el mundo, ejemplos como estos abundan y los resultados no han afectado la imagen de las marcas, por el contrario, han tenido una aceptación excelente por parte de sus usuarios, quienes luego de adaptarse al cambio, valoran la medida.
