It’s harder than you might think to find organic and all natural mascara.  There’s plenty of options for other kinds of makeup, but apparently it’s a little harder to come up with a good formulation for mascara - that is until Physicians Formula created their Organic Wear Mascara.

First of all, it’s easy to buy.  I found mine at Target and paid around $10.00 for a tube.  Not a bad price for organic makeup and I could pick it up with the other errands that I had to do.

You can find Physicians Formula Organic Wear makeup at places you’ll be shopping anyway, like CVS, Walgreens and Ulta, and when there’s a sale on Physicians Formula products, you can score organic makeup for even less. 

And this stuff works!!

I bought a tube of Ultra Black Organics.  As soon as you put it on, you can instantly see a dramatic difference in the color and thickness of your lashes.  The packaging says it boosts lashes 5X by lengthening, volumizing and defining.  The package isn’t lying.  This mascara gives me thicker, darker lashes than many of the other conventional brands out there made with a slew of toxic chemicals.  Pretty impressive.

Now, on to the organic side of things.  Here’s what you won’t find in Physicians Formula Organic Wear Mascara -

• Synthetic preservatives
• Parabens

That’s a lot of accolades for a mascara that’s easy to find and easier on you and the environment.

I just have two complaints about the mascara.  First, it smudges easily and I don’t like that.  I’ve been super vigilent about not rubbing my eyes or doing anything to make the mascara migrate south onto my skin, and yet it does.  I’m not sure what’s going on with that.  Perhaps if the formulation was changed just a little to have less oils and waxes in the mascara it wouldn’t migrate as easily.  Who knows. 

Second, the actual tube of mascara has a silly looking neon green metallic cap that makes me think of Tinkerbell’s fairy wand at Disney.  I don’t need to feel like a little girl playing dress up when I use mascara.  A simple, grown up tube would be fine with me.

Two ‘eco’ topics a day! That wasn’t premeditated. Let’s say we support everything that contributes to our environment but still gives a hint of stylishness to our daily life, and that happens to be fashion and beauty.

I am quite excited about this new brand: UNE by Bourjois. Especially their philosophy and image around the product, like ‘The beauty of tommorow’ is:

The packaging is really clean and sober, and designed to minimise the impact on the environment. The products are free of GMO’s, paraben, artificial fragrance or colourings. And 13 of the 16 featured products carry the Ecocert label.

Evidently, I wouldn’t write a positive review about a product if I wasn’t positive about it. So I’ve tried a few of the UNE products: the Sheer Lips Gloss, the Sheer Lips Balm, Breezy Cheeks Blush, Nude Eyes Eyeshadow, the Sfumato Eyes Pencil and the Eye Brow Accent Pencil.

I really like the texture of the gloss; not to sticky! The lip balm gives you hydrated lips in a natural lip colour. The blush is not powder but of a compact, creamy texture to apply with your fingers for a ‘healthy glow’. The eyeshadow in nude color enlightens the eyes without giving an effect of wearing eyeshadow, which works great for me. Interesting is the Sfumato Eyes Pencil, I would definitely recommend this one if you want to make smokey eyes. I just have one small critic: I miss the brush at the end of the Eye Brow Pencil.

Conclusion: A very good, easy to use, and not the least, Eco friendly make-up label. Very suitable for women who want to use make-up that feels like your not wearing any but still make you look beautiful (like me)!

Die seit über 1000 Jahren nach traditionellem Rezept und in herkömmlicher Weise hergestellte Aleppo-Seife besteht aus Olivenöl (Olea europaea) und Lorbeerbeerenöl (Laurus Nobilis), das aus den beerenartigen Früchten des Lorbeerbaumes gewonnen wird und einen charakteristischen, frischen Duft aufweist. Das Olivenöl reinigt und nährt die Haut zugleich. Seine ungesättigten Fettsäuren stärken ihre natürliche Schutzschicht. Daher fühlt sich die Haut auch bei häufiger Anwendung der Seife stets glatt und geschmeidig an. Je höher der Anteil des Lorbeerbeerenöls (Najel vertreibt Aleppo-Seife mit 12%, 24%, 34% und 45% Lorbeerbeerenöl), desto teurer ist die Seife in der Herstellung und desto zarter ist sie zur Haut, so dass sie gerade auch bei trockener, empfindlicher und gereizter Haut zu empfehlen ist. 

Aleppo-Seife eignet sich zum täglichen Händewaschen und zur Reinigung des ganzen Körpers, natürlich auch unter der Dusche. Man kann sie ebenfalls zum Waschen der Haare und als Rasierschaum verwenden. Die reine Olivenöl-Seife ist daneben auch zum Wäschewaschen und insbesondere zur Behandlung hartnäckiger Flecken geeignet. 

Das traditionelle Herstellungsverfahren der Aleppo-Seife

Frühe Seidensiedereien sind für das 7./8. Jahrhundert bezeugt. Damit ist die Aleppo-Seife die Vorfahrin der Savon de Marseille (Marseiller Seife) und eine der ältesten Seifen, die es gibt.

Die Seifenproduktion der Firma Najel geht inzwischen in die 16. Generation und nach wie vor wird dabei an traditioneller Handarbeit festgehalten: Zunächst werden Olivenöl, Soda und Wasser in großen Kesseln erhitzt und vermengt. Kurz vor Vollendung des Verseifungsprozesses wird Lorbeerbeerenöl hinzugegeben und die beiden Öle verwandeln sich in Sodium olivate und Sodium laurate. Nachdem die Sodalösung vollständig abgelassen wurde, wird die noch warme Seifenpaste in flachen Wannen gleichmäßig verteilt, wo sie abkühlt und erhärtet. Nach einigen Stunden erfolgt der Zuschnitt in quaderförmige Seifenstücke, die einzeln gestempelt werden. Danach werden die Seifen in kühlen Gewölbekellern auf Lücke gestapelt, wo sie mehrere Monate lagern.

Am Ende des Trocknungsprozesses sind die ursprünglich grünen Seifen an der Oberfläche ockerfarben, während sich im Inneren ihr frisches Grün erhält. Es ist umso intensiver, je höher der Lorbeerbeerenöl-Anteil der Seifen ist.

Aleppo-Seife von Najel

Die Aleppo-Seifen von Najel enthalten – entsprechend ihrer traditionellen Rezeptur – weder tierische Inhaltsstoffe, noch Farbstoffe, künstliche Duftstoffe oder Konservierungsstoffe. Sie sind dermatologisch getestet, selbstverständlich tierversuchsfrei.

Neben den traditionellen, quaderförmigen 200g-Seifen – die reine Olivenöl-Seife oder Aleppo-Seifen mit 12%, 24%, 34% und 45% Lorbeerbeerenöl -, die alle ECOCERT zertifiziert sind, vertreibt Najel auch 100g-Seifen, kleine Gästeseifen sowie Aleppo-Flüssigseife. Daneben umfasst das Sortiment eine Reihe von Duftseifen: Aleppo-Seife mit Schwarzkümmelöl, Jasminöl oder Rosenöl aus Damaskus sowie Weihrauchseife in verschiedenen Formen (Blätter, Rauten, Kreise, Herzen) mit orientalischen Mustern.

Besonders sanft ist unsere Honig-Seife, während die Aleppo-Seife mit Lavaerde und Arganöl die Haut porentief reinigt und zugleich mit Feuchtigkeit versorgt.  Wer eine Peeling-Seife sucht, der hat die Wahl zwischen der Schwarzen Seife, die auf der Basis von Olivenpaste hergestellt wird und besonders im Hammam, dem orientalischen Dampfbad, beliebt ist, sowie der  Aleppo-Seife mit roter Tonerde und jener mit dem Schlamm des Toten Meeres.

Zum Wäschewaschen können Sie das Aleppo-Seifengranulat (für die Handwäsche) oder das Aleppo-Seifenwaschpulver (für die Maschinenwäsche) benutzen; beides ist ideal für die Feinwäsche, insbesondere bei empfindlicher Haut und für Baby-Kleidung, und zudem 100% ökologisch abbaubar.

Dr Selvam Daniel, Managing Director, ECOCERT India, which is an affiliate of a French global certification company of the same name, recently said that, Indian textile companies would corner a sizeable share in the global organic textile industry with India emerging as the top organic cotton-producing country.

In 2007-08, global organic cotton production increased by 152 per cent to 145,872 metric tons or 668,581 bales and the area under cotton cultivation increased to 161,000 hectares in top organic cotton-producing countries like Syria, India, Turkey and China.

Fibre2fashion spoke exclusively to Mr Daniel and asked him about the reasons for India emerging as the top organic cotton-producing and exporting country, to which he said, “The Indian natural textile fibre industry has a great potential to cater to the organic consumer demand worldwide because of the following intrinsic factors-

1) A substantial production base: India produces 600,000 bales of cotton and has a latent production capacity for organic jute. This places India in a very strong position to supply processed organic cotton products to the global markets.

2) Good technical infrastructure: The Indian natural textile fibre industry has the latest technical infrastructure to produce high quality garments at a reasonable cost, hence helping India achieve a competitive advantage over other countries in supplying high quality and wide range of organic textile products to the consuming markets.

La maison écologique

Pour bien comprendre les conséquences de chacun de nos gestes quotidiens, rien de tel qu’une visite dans cette maison.

Tous les points sont abordés : chauffage, éclairage, gestion de l’eau, des déchets… tout y est ! Des bornes interactives sont placées ça et là pour tester nos connaissances par thématique. Je m’en sors bien sur  les quizz “déchets”, mais saviez-vous que les verres de table ne doivent pas être mis dans la poubelle des verres ?

 Comment bien choisir son isolation ?

Impossible de discuter avec un professionnel sur ce stand. Seul pour répondre aux nombreuses questions des visiteurs du salon, c’était un peu léger.

Notez, je suis locataire, donc peu concernée par le sujet, n’empêche !

Comment se vêtir responsable ?

La fibre de bambou est une fibre naturelle, de plus en plus utilisée pour confectionner les vêtements.

Ambassadrice de la marque de maquillage naturel Couleur Caramel, je porte une tenue en fibres de bambou lors des soirées « Women Only ». Le bambou est une fibre confortable, qui froisse peu.

L’offre est cependant trop anecdotique et pose plusieurs problèmes : coût élevé de ces vêtements, et trop peu de choix dans les coupes et les couleurs des vêtements.

 Manger bio

Les produits proposés sont ceux que l’on peut trouver dans un magasin bio lambda, la pédagogie en prime !

Le plus pour les visiteurs, les nombreuses dégustations (il y avait de nombreuses classes d’écoles et de collèges ce jour-là… j’ai dû renoncer à approcher les stands gourmands)

Les entreprises qui s’engagent

Comme EDF (photo ci-dessus) de nombreuses entreprises ont choisi d’exposer sur le Salon Planète Mode d’Emploi 2009. A nouveau, on se demande si cela relève du coup médiatique (j’ai croisé de nombreux journalistes dans les allées) ou si leur démarche est sincère et active ?

Sur ce stand, on vous photographie, on imprime votre trombine, que vous dédicacez : une phrase sur un engagement durable, une citation éthique ou autre, vous choisissez !

Ok, l’idée est sympa mais :
-          combien consomme la grosse machine à imprimer les photos ? (encre & papier)
-          avec quoi sont collées les photos sur le mur ? (j’ai demandé, et c’est avec une colle en spray, rien de plus polluant pour l’air alentour !)
-          que vont-ils en faire ? Réponse = les inclure sur le site « fondation EDF » avec Alain Bernard en home page… donc en numérique ! Impression pour le plaisir !

Que recouvre la mention “agriculture biologique”?

C’est l’ensemble des productions agricoles qui répondent à un cahier des charges. Les produits frais biologiques sont cultivés sans pesticides ni engrais chimique. Mais est-ce à dire qu’ils sont exempts de traitements? Et bien non, ces derniers doivent être traités avec des engrais naturels d’origine animale, végétale ou minérale.

Pour obtenir le label AB (Agriculture Biologique), tous les produits frais ou transformés biologiques doivent systématiquement être contrôlés par des organismes indépendants:

Qualité France

Ces cultures, qui n’ont jamais “goûter” aux engrais puissants ou connu les serres chauffées, poussent plus lentement mais ils ont une qualité gustative et se conservent bien mieux.

Attention

Tous les labels ne sont pas biologiques. Les imitations sont nombreuses: “production fermière”, “non traitée”, “agriculture raisonnée”…

If you’ve stepped into (or simply inhaled as you passed) a Sabon NYC store (unfortunately a NY/NJ/Chicago/Boston-only experience in the USA), you know how beckoning and utterly mesmerising the scent of their soaps can be. I’ll admit that I’ve been drawn inside on more than one occasion. Each Sabon soap bar is nothing short of a work of art, always richly scented of herbs or flowers. As if I needed any other reason to love Sabon, they’ve recently joined the ranks of companies producing organic product lines. Yes, there is now Sabon Organic! My intro to the Ecocert-approved line was their sea salt and olive oil Organic Body Scrub, which just turns skin into silk. It’s exactly the thing to use before a special night out- when you want your skin to look and feel amazing. I also liked the richness of their organic hand and foot creams, no doubt a result of a blend of shea butter with olive, macadamia nut and jojoba oils.  One thing to note: while none of the Sabon Organic products are 100% organic (the scrub I tried was 20.5% organic and 100% natural and the hand and foot creams are 84% and 83% organic, respectively), the exact percentages, as well as ingredients, are clearly labeled on all packaging (even my mini samples!). Hvis du skal til Paris i sommer, bør du ta turen innom mote designeren Anne Fontaine sin dagspa. Hun er mest kjent for å lage fantastiske bluser, men tro meg hun kan virkelig kunsten å lage spa! I am very interested in using simple, clean and non-toxic skin care products. I am getting very close to cooking up my own. Using Environmental Working Group’s safecosmetics.com I have found that many of my favored organic companies aren’t as squeaky clean as I require. Check out your brands, and if they don’t feature yours you can just enter in the ingredients and see the ratings for each one on a scale of 1-8, 8 being hazardous to our health.

Here is an example of Hauschka’s Hand Cream (I loved that hand cream, especially the little samples, so easy to travel with…)

Okay, so what to do. There are other brands to choose from. What I am using now is Nikken’s True Elements. It is largely organic, certified by Ecocert. Ecocert is an independent organization that conducts inspections and certifications to insure organic integrity. They are a European company accredited by many groups including USDA for NOP Certification.

All True Elements products are made from the flowers, vines and herbs that grow in the Valaisan Mountains of the Swiss Alps. Subjected to extremes of temperature and humidity over the course of centuries, these rare plant strains have developed an unusual resistance to the effects of environmental stress. Sounds good to me. Using Safecosmetics site we found most of the ingredients to score 0 which is the best! and there were a few 1’s and 2’s mostly ingredients at the end of the list- which means there isn’t much o it in there!
